Situated so close to the cable car cafe and the grant cable line this hotel has all you need for a quiet and relaxed break in San Francisco. Very simple to get to the tourist spots particularly Chinatown where it is always possible to find a pressie or two and from there a simple matter to get into the main business district and the shopping streets before a short walk to the bay itself.

We stayed 2 nights in 'The Mosser' not very far away before coming to 'The Grant Hotel'. Comparing the two, I'd prefer to stay in the Mosser again. The room in the Grant was a littler larger; however towels and bedding were worn out and really smelly so that I was happy, when the last night was over.

We stayed at the Grant Hotel in SFO 4 nights during our Honeymoon. The location of the hotel is good and the rooms are ok. But the only thing that costs nothing is really missing at this hotel: Friendliness. Seems to be an unknown word for this hotel. We mentioned before and during our visit, that it was our Honeymoon, but not even a Congratulation. And even for not Honeymooners, the staff was very unfiendly, no smile, no extra word, general information only after asking and more detailed information after asking twice. For me this is really a sad situation and can not compensate the good location. Because on my holiday I want to deal with friendly people...

Our room (502) on the fifth floor was clean, spacious and good for the price! The bed was comfortable and view pretty good. Downside was it was quite noicy at times because of the traffic on the streets. The breakfast was ok if you like muffins and pastries - some fruit would definately be a nice add (I usually bought some from the Walgreen's nearby). Location is excellent: short walk to Union Square and cable car stop very close.

It is very difficult to find a central hotel in SF for approx 100$ / night. That is, what i got. The hotel and the room are old, but everything what i needed was available (without free wifi in the room). A big minus - they offered inclured breakfast. But there was no real breakfast. In the morning, there have been a few free muffins at the reception - but that was all. No toasts, no bread, no orange juice, nothing - not even water.

It is only worth it because of its great location. Hotel staff is quite rude and does not offer any help or advise. Rooms are just ok, we had to request for a room change when placed in stage 1 in a room with a intense bad smell. We forgot there a pair of jeans and received no warning/notice.

Good location, just a few steps from Mason or Powell. Plenty of shops, bars and restaurants on the doorstep. Caution: A 'niche' cinema is a couple of doors away, so the easily offended should be aware! Facilities within the hotel are a little basic, but thee was free internet within the lobby area (2 fixed PCs, plus wi-fi). Room more than adequate. Breakfast was very basic, being cakes and coffee. As previously posted, there were occasional unpleasant odours in the corridors - no idea where they emanated from, but needs to be dealt with. Staff were OK at best, not too chatty. Tip - buy a muni pass from Walgreens around the corner, as they offer excellent value for getting around San Francisco, and include the nearby Cable Car, which is $6 a journey if you pay cash.

We found the Hotel Grant staff welcoming, the room easy on the eye, clean and comfortable, bathroom functional. Importantly there was a disabled access and lift. I have severe arthritis and do not like to climb stairs, so the disabled entrance was good and the fact the hotel had a lift. Also the top floor was floor 5 which meant that in an emergency I could get down the stairs. I felt it represented value for money. It was well situated in regard to visiting attractions, finding cafes, restaurants etc. The breakfast was sufficient to break the fast and if you needed to get away in a hurry. I loved the Japanese restaurant one door away from the hotel.

The stay at the Grant Hotel was very disappointing. The Hotel smelled like urin, also the rooms. My clothes smelled really badly after returning home. The Hotel was unbelievably noisy. We could here everything that was going on in the rooms next to us and in the hallway. We were woken up every morning EARLY because of other guests and housekeeping cleaning rooms. The guests who stayed next to us liked to watch television late at night and this kept us awake. I have never slept as little in any other Hotel. Also there was no information in the hotel room. We did not know the number to front desk or how to call room to room. The staff was not very help full, and they all seemed very indifferent. I find it very strange that the staff didn't say hello, or goodnight or whatever whenever we entered the Hotel. They didn't even look up from the computer, and there where no other guests there. One of the receptionists was acting unprofessional by being in a bad mood and clearly showed us that calling for a cab to the airport was a hassle. The only positive thing I can say about the Grant hotel is the location. Besides of this the Hotel was expensive compared to service and the product we received.

The best that can be said about this awful place and our bare bones room is that it had a bed, although the room was so small that we kept bumping our knees into it. No coffee maker, no hair dryer, no wi-fi, one towel per guest..etc. We inquired about getting some heat in the room because it was chilly when we got there. We were told that they controlled the heat and because they didn't think it was cold enough to turn it on, we (and the other people that were cold)weren't getting any heat. Which brings me to the front desk personnel. It was fitting as well that the ones that spoke English weren't friendly and the ones that may have been friendly didn't speak English. Overall, this was a miserable stay at a place I would not recommend to my enemies. I was enticed by the price but trust me, pay a little more and stay anywhere but here.

Really nice hotel, very close to Union Square. The heating is working by means of some automatic system, so the person in the reception cannot turn it on (it should turn on automatically by itself) - the only con. Breakfast (pastry and tea/coffee) is really nice. Tea/Coffee is available all the time for free too.

Wonderful location (only up to a very steeply road), lot of restaurants, pubs and shops just 1 minutes far from the hotel.Safe neighbours also to walk in the night. Wireless only works in the hotel hall but there is a public network (5$/day) that can be used from the rooms. The staff does his best to be kind, somethimes without completely succeeding ! I would reccomend this hotel to couples also with children who are looking for a cheap, well located, quite and clean accomodation in San Francisco. Good car rental (national and alamo) just in front of the hotel, very kind staff, good prices.

The hotel was the worst memory of my trip to San Francisco. The location near Union Square is the only good point of this hotel. I think I had the worst room of the hotel, small, not clean, dark, with a window and a wall just behind at 50 cm... And all for 100$ per night... One day before we were in Vegas in a luxury room for 50$ per night. What a contrast !

The staff is very friendly and helps if you got any questions whatsoever. My girlfriend and I, stayed for 3 days, and is comming back in a month. The rooms are nice and well sized, and got a digital safe, which is free of charge! There are to up to date mac. computers in the lobby, free to use, and wireless access in the lobby as well. Unfortunately the wireless connection only works in the lobby, but there is chairs, couches and tables. The only very small minus is the breakfast that only contains doughnuts, muffins and danish, tee and regular coffee. Would be nice with some cornflakes or other non-sugar product. Pros: -central location -cheap -free coffee and baked goods in the morning, decent quality -refrigerator, safe, and hair dryer in the room -didn't need the lobby computer terminal, as Grant's wi-fi was free and OK strength in room -parking across the street is 1/2 price for guests, about $24.00/24 hrs. -clean room, clean bathroom, huge walk-in closet, GREAT BED! Cons: -when we arrived, the room had a strong chemical cleaner type smell that we eventually beat down with incense. The main hallway downstairs had a stink too, sort of an old building stink reminiscent of pee, although it was raining and that might have contributed to the scent -for some reason our key needed to be reset each day, we kept getting locked out of our room -the main lobby and reception desk area have a bit of a grungy look, nothing a coat of pain or some elbow grease and vinegar wouldn't fix

An excellent place to visit S. Francisco and spend few money!!

At first glance the hotel seems pretty shabby, though eventually you get good value for money. It is clean, and most of the other guests seemed to be ok folks. Though the room had a private bath, the sink was located inside the room itself and not in the bathroom, which was strange but not too bad.

The hotel definitely falls in the older quaint category, but I was pleased with the overall experiance. I booked (and paid for) a room with a queen bed, but our room actually had a double bed - not a queen. I didn't bother to question it until checkout and the receptionist insisted that it really was a queen size bed in that room. I didn't complain earlier because we were happy with the location, price, and we didn't want to pack up to switch rooms. The price and location were great for a casual weekend trip to San Francisco. We had easy access to public transportation and went everywhere we planned to visit. We didn't miss not having a rental car one bit. The BART station was about six blocks downhill from the hotel. I wouldn't hesitate to stay there again, but I would check the size of the bed a little more closely before I unpack.

Excellent choice for single/young couples: at the heart of San Francisco spending really cheap money.

My boyfriend and me we had a fantastic stay in San Francisco. The Grant Hotel was perfectly located for what we planned to do. Just around the corner the cable car stopped, Union Square was only a few hundred meters away and many other things are in walking distance. Just be careful if in terms of what you expect for breakfast. You will sit in the lobby, eating Croissants, Muffins and Donuts with a coffee or tea. No cheese, no bread or that kind but still ok. However, we were absolutely happy with what we had at Grant Hotel and I would stay there again.

Perfect location between Union Square and China town - good convenction with a garage right in front of hotel, parking in san francisco is difficult and expensive in the most importan area.If you rent a car the hotel makes this facility. Breakfast would be better, but in USA is never included in price like in the most of north europe

Location is this hotel's best feature - it's two minutes from Union Square, and just minutes from Chinatown, the Financial District and Market Street. So of course there are dozens and restaurants and shops all around. The hotel itself is not fancy but very nice. The rooms are of decent size (though not big), the bathrooms are spacious and very clean. The staff was nice and generally helpful. There was no real breakfast, but the hotel did provide pastries every morning in lobby. It is not a romantic place, but if you are looking for a clean and modestly priced hotel in central SF, Grant is a great option.

I have stayed in the hotel for holiday. It is quite small for the american standards, but large enough for european ones (i'm italian). The furniture is quite old but well keeped. The best thing is that the hotel is one block away from Union Square and the prices are really interesting!

We stayed in SF for 4 days and the hotel stay was great. The location is great. The rooms are clean and the service is friendly. Overall a very nice experience. It is not a 5 star hotel, however for a clean, friendly, central and not expensive place your choice is clear: The Grant Hotel.

Nice hotel for exploring San Francisco. Nearby Chinatown and other interesting areas. Good relationship between price and quality. Would certainly book again if I would return to San Francisco

The Grant Hotel is in a great location. I have stayed here twice. I have never had any problems with this hotel. Chinatown and Union Square are a short walk from the hotel. It is also close to the Grace Cathedral. The continental breakfast in the morning is simple but appreciated. You can't beat the Grant Hotel for quality and price in pricy San Francisco. I urge anyone looking for a San Francisco hotel to stay here.

We highly recommend this hotel to people who (like us) don't want to spend too much money in the accomodation but enjoy the city instead. The location is great, the rooms are clean. The lobby is worn-down and don't wait too much from the breakfast. But all in all, we were satisfied!
