Goldene Ente was the perfect location, with one of the friendliest proprietors I've ever met; she was wonderful. I met three friends in Salzburg, and we used Goldene Ente as our meeting place (even though there is no lobby with seating) for two reasons, the convenient, central location and the excellent restaurant. The elevator goes to all four floors; however, it's well hidden. Enter the restaurant and almost immediately look to your left down a little hallway. I booked a single and got a double room. It wasn't the fanciest of rooms, but it was spotless and had a little corner nook with table and great view of Goldgasse, a shopping street. The room has flat screen, cable TV, but no alarm clock, so bring your own. An Internet computer is available on the first floor (second floor US) for guests. The breakfast buffet was excellent: hard boiled eggs, meats, cheeses, rolls, breads, cereal, yogurt, dried and fresh fruits, juices, coffee espresso, cappuccino, or tea.

A very typical austrian style guest house, great location in the heart of the old town, 9 euros taxi fare from train station. walking distance to all the sights and 5 mins from the venicular railway which takes you up to the castle. breakfast typical european with various cheeses, meats and eggs which suited us. situated on a cobbled side road which kept the rooms cool as the temperature was high 20's when we visited, street had lovely curio shops. seating area outside guest house, beer kellar style pub inside. served typical austrian dishes. very busy with locals and tourists as standard of food was excellent. the staff very friendly and helpful. only disappointment was our room, which resembled hostel accomodation, clean but very very basic with old worn furniture. we actually both burst out laughing when we first walked in as we couldnt believe our eyes. would have rated it 10 overall if the rooms had not been so shabby. we did speak to others in the guest house and there was a 50/50 split over the rooms, some saying theirs was upgraded others agreeing with us so perhaps all the rooms are in the process of being upgraded. really enjoyed out visit and Ulrika and staff where terrific and helped us with a few tours and pointed us in the direction of the local brewery and beer garden which was a scenic 20 minute walk along the river.

Excellent location, cheerful & helpful proprietess, brightly colored & pleasant room, groovy ancient building, large breakfast (bread, meat, cheese, jam et al, cereal, fruit, jogurt, boiled eggs, coffee/tea). Shower ran out of hot. Restaurant on ground floor is fine, staff charming.

Wonderful find for this rate. I would stay here again. The rooms were big - rooms 15 and 11 both had a built-in corner bench and table for dining. Room 15 is bigger than 11, but 11 has a little hallway inside the door with an armoire before reaching the room, which is a nice buffer from foot traffic outside the room. Also, room 11 has a large bathroom with a giant showerhead, a big vanity made from an old chest, and a huge old window in the shower that opens. Best bathrooms I've had in an old hotel in Europe. Room 15's bathroom was more ordinary, but not too cramped. Room 11 is on the backside the building and 15 is on the streetside. Ulrike, the innskeeper, was just the best. So nice, helpful and funny. Great restaurant recommendations (try Trattroria de Pippo by the hotel.) Breakfast is cold cuts, breads, strudel, boiled eggs, fruit, cereal, coffee and juices - typical of included breakfasts in Austria. The breakfast room is sunny and bright. I never used the elevator. The staircases are narrow, steep, and stone. Kinda charming, but could be trouble for someone who isn't steady on their feet. The location is terrific, nestled in Old Town, cute boutiques all around. The taxi driver will drop you in the Mozartplatz a the end of the block - about 30 yards from the door.

Good Hotel, well located in the center of the old town. Our room was quiet, but a little bit narrow. May be a need to refurbish wall-papers. In that period of the year (2nd half of August), the temperature in room is too high due to the lack of air conditionning.

Thought had booked double with extra bed but found it was 2 rooms - single and double. Rooms very small. Beds, very uncomfortable (like sleeping on the floor). Bathrooms smelt of frying food. Radiators made loud noise when turned off but radiator in one room not accessible so unable to turn it on to stop the loud whining sound. Breakfast poor standard. The 2 bedrooms we had looked nothing like the smart room on the website. Would not return.

It was a VERY hard place to find. It's on a tiny, pedestrian only street in a GREAT location, but hard to find. We had a car that we had to park at the large parking lot a little ways away. Would have been nice to have better directions to find the hotel to drop off our luggage. The hotel was very friendly and helped us book tours. The facilities were pretty nice - clean and quaint. The location is great - right off the main shopping street and very easy to walk around the entire city. Great town!

The room was very large and very clean & comfortable. The bathroom was great although it flooded as shower just had a screen. The more annoying aspect was that the lift was quite noisy and backed onto our room and people going to and from their rooms was noisy also. The location fo the hotel was perfect however and I could put up with the noise again for the price (100 Euro for a double) and the superb location. Breakfast was also excellent.

A very nice hotel right in the heart of the OLD TOWN Salzburg. I have stayed here before and enjoy it, the room was huge, nice clean bathroom, and ULRICA at the front desk was wonderfull. She could be the model for how an employee of a hotel should be !!! She gets an 'A+' in my book. Breakfast was nice. only drawback was the high price for the room, but the location mandates the price.

The staff at this hotel were absolutely superb and could not have been more welcoming or more helpful. They provided concert time details, bus times and numbers etc etc. Excellent. The only reason my room was not v quiet was that it was opposite the lift door. Another time I might ask for a room away from the lift.

Nice hotel located in the center of old town Salzburg. Downstairs is a pub/restaurant. To access the elevator, you almost have to go into the kitchen. Location is great - in the middle of the tourist district. Beware, arrive before 8:00 PM. Things shutdown around 9:00 PM and the hotel staff does not provide 24-hour service!! Also, be sure to get a good map or directions - it's not hard to find, but it's located on a pedestrian alleyway with lots of shops and restaurants; not on a street. The room was small, but satisfactory, there was a little damage in the bathroom. The hotel manager pushed the local tours pretty heavily - I'm sure they get a cut. We took the bus tour to the salt mines. It was very interesting - way overpriced, but fun, and I'm glad we went.

The breakfast room is bright and cheery, the food is fresh and everything i had was delicious. During my stay the clientel was primarily, young couples, families, and older couples. I was traveling alone, was very comfortable and thoroughly enjoyed my stay. Easy walking distance to everything you want to do and see.

This was my first time at the Goldene Ente and I hope not the last! The location is perfect for the Old Town of Salzburg, and if you like quirky historic buildings this place is for you! Our room was absolutely fine for the one night we stayed there. Only negative was that it was very difficult to control the heating but otherwise we would recommend this hotel to anyone.

Our room was a bit cramped, but we had a large bathroom which made it seem roomier. The staff were extremely friendly and welcoming, location was excellent, and the restaurant was very good, serving several Salzburg specialties. My only suggestion would be to mention that guests arriving by car should park in the Parkhaus B of the central parking garage and walk to the hotel, which is in a pedestrian zone.

Although fairly old it is a nice cozy place. There is however no vehicular access as it is in a narrow street but the taxi put down is just a couple of minutes away. We had a fantastic 2 days in Salzburg. Ulrike and her staff were fantistic, very knowledgeable and helpful.Nothing was too much trouble for them. The food was lovely and the rooms were spotlessly clean. The bedroom was a little small but that is understandable considering the age of the building We would definately return to the Goldene Ende. You can't really find a better location for a hotel in Salzburg. The staff could not have been more helpful and friendly - we took their advice on which tour to take and it was fantastic. We also had a delightful dinner at the restaurant downstairs. I worried that the noise from downstairs would be loud, but it was just fine. Our stay at the Goldene Ente was absolutely lovely, and I would happily recommend it to anyone.

We had a great stay in Salzburg, even though it rained for two of the four days we were there. This was mainly due to the manager of the hotel, who was extremely friendly and very helpful in all areas we were interested in. She was very hard working, filled up our coffee cups before they were emptied, was a typical hardworking person who was happy all the time. We would certainly stay there again, and recommend this hotel which is very close to most of the sights of the city.

We stayed for one night. we paid 100 euros for a small, poor, tiny room while on the web page the rooms were very nice! Quite noisy in the corridor but the staff was pleasant. A part from that, the hotel was very well located: in the heart of the old town and the food of the restaurant was good.

The staff were very bubbly and helpful and had a lot of suggestions as to what to do. Theres a bar/restaurant downstairs with a lovely atmosphere and good quality food. The staff here are amazing. During our stay we were both ill and the staff were both helpful and accomodating. Any requests were quickly and efficiently dealt with, in such a pleasing manner that you never felt it was a problem to ask for anything. The Restaurant on the ground floor had a lovely atmosphere but a limited selection of food. Though the drinks on offer, including a gorgeous hot chocolate, were very good.

The Goldene Ente Hotel is in a very interesting building right in the old part of Salzburg – it is somewhat challenging to find the first time. Our room was quiet, clean, reasonably spacious and well furnished although the sheet on one of our beds was full of small holes. The members of staff are very helpful and the breakfast is excellent. Bring your own soap! Since any interest in post 1970's bathroom decor or the swinging of cats did not apply for us, the tiny bathroom was manageable but the provision of more than a liquid soap container above the bath would be a real practical improvement. We stayed 6 nights into first week in Novemeber 2005 and found generally the comments of other reviewers to be accurate; can't add much more other than our own opinions covering the time we were there. The room itself was of adequate size, clean and comfortable. The modernisation though was done with obviously more thought to cost than to detail or quality. The cheap laminate flooring added nothing to the ambience of such a wonderful old building. The double windows were surprisingly effective in quietening the peals of early morning bells from the Dom and churches (although we threw them open to enjoy that!)but its still a novel wake-up alarm. I suspect in summer, with windows open there would be noise from Goldgasse below, so what??? This is more a basic bed and breakfast accommodation than hotel. The unbeatable location, ample buffet breakfasts, character, and the friendly, helpful, efficient, humorous, indomitably Austrian lady who does reception duty and takes care of you at bearkfast makes this a fine place to stay. For same price or cheaper you could easily stay in a chain accommodation, with services and more facilities; but if you prefer character to anonymity, then this is a great base for the visitor taking an independent approach and wishing to feel at least partly at home in the wonderful old city of Salzburg. We will stay again.

The best features are the hotel`s location, character and friendliness; it`s not the place to stay if you want luxury. It is situated in a very attractive old part of Salzburg, close to the river (a 40 minute boat trip can be highly recommended), shops and restaurants. It is in a narrow street unsuitable for vehicles. The building is old and you get to reception by means of a small lift. The 2 ladies in charge are friendly and good-humoured. The key to your room also unlocks the front door of the hotel. "Don`t lose it because if you are late at night you may then have to sleep under the bridge," we were told jokily on arrival. The bedroom was relatively small and got hot at night and the bathroom was small and appeared to lack ventilation. Continental-style breakfast was adequate but rather uninspired. (We did not sample the restaurant.) At 125 euros per night for a double room, including breakfast, the hotel seemed to be overpriced though we might have felt differently if we had had a better bedroom. We would like to return to Salzburg, which is really beautiful, and if so would quite likely stay at this hotel again.

I had the ultimate pleasure of staying at the Goldene Ente recently. It is a 700 year old building with 17 rooms, which have been recently renovated (the previous owner did not renovate the property for 40 years). This hotel is located absolutely dead centre of the old town of Salzburg. Walk out the front door, onto a lovely cobblestone lane, which is seconds from the major tourist attractions (which you will recognize from THAT musical). Highly recommended is the wonderful restaurant on the ground floor of the hotel. Let Reinhard and the other staff treat you to great food, great service and wonderful ambience (and it's very reasonably priced too). This hotel is a good three star property (although the rooms don't resemble the photo's on the website) and I recomend this hotel to anyone. If you are wanting a real Salzburg experience, avoid all the more well known brand hotels and stay at the Goldene Ente instead.

12 Euros by taxi into Salzburg old town. Golden Ente is in a narrow pedestrianised street between the river dividing the old and new towns and the cathedral. "Old Town" and "New Town" make Salzburg sound big, but it's much smaller than any city we've stayed in to be honest. Ente is in just the right spot - the tourist driven Old Town where the best restaurants, pubs and things to do. About a minute's walk from the Ente are two friendly Irish pubs, and the Ente itself has an excellent restaurant/bar on the ground floor selling Austrian and bavarian food/beers. Reception to the hotel is on the first floor, English spoken by both receptionists we met. Paid 80 Euros per night less 10% for cash, for a double room, en-suite. Room recently modernised, bathroom still old-fashioned, but no complaints. Continental buffet breakfast included. Definitely good value for the location. Definitely recommended for a friendly clean stay in the heart of the city.

Consigliato!
