Hotel Mas de la Fouque - Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer

We had a pleasant enough stay but I thought this hotel was extremely overpriced for the quality you get. The passageways to the rooms are shabby, lights not working etc. There was only one lamp and bedside table in the room, a limited range of tv channels i.e. terrestrial plus CNN. Our room was very plain and dated. It was also quite narrow with very little room either side of the bed hence lack of bedside furniture. We did however have a new flat screen tv but everything else looked ten years old. I suppose it must be hard to keep somewhere looking smart considering the location but it was bizarre that they claim to be four star luxury. I noted that their ratings sign outside was dated 2001 and suspect the inspectors have not been back since. There wasn't anything badly wrong, it just felt like a pretty average (and shabby) place at highly raised prices. Given this let down we didn't try the hotel's restaurant which charged 50 euros per person since I didn't have confidence it would live up to its cost. I nearly chose this hotel for my honeymoon last year, thank goodness I didn't as from the website I would have been expecting something really special but it's nothing spectacular at all. I would alteratively recommend Les Arnelles which is less than half the price of this hotel and is walking distance from town.

The less than joyous experience of our stay is not really Mas de La Fouque's fault. We knew there are mosquitoes in the Camargue, but we did not realise how many, how big and how aggressive they are. My partner was devoured within 30 seconds of getting out of the car and had an alarming reaction to the bites - you could see the poison spreading quite literally. Unfortunately they were everywhere (including in the very small room) and this meant we couldn't take advantage of the facilities (pool, restaurant, bar etc) and we had to drive into the nearest town to find a closed in restaurant with air-conditioning which the little blighters couldn't penetrate. (Repellent had little effect.) As to the MdlF itself; the staff were friendly and nice and it certainly is an unspoilt and quiet environment. But I did think that there was a shabbiness about the place (there was considerable live mould and fungus growing on the walls of our bathroom) and the buildings looked down at heel considering the price and the luxury label. You also have to get used to the somewhat sulphurous smell that comes from all the seawater lakes in the area. All in all, I'm not sure I can really recommend it based on our experience. I needn't worry though as my partner has declared that we will never set foot in the Camargue again!

Stylish hotel in a beautiful location.Staff were friendly and helpful. We had a room overlooking the water and the views and proximity to the wildlife were incredible.Looking at Flamingos while having a bath! The food was delicious and well presented and the atmosphere in the restaurant hit the right balance between being relaxed and professional. Some of the prices for drinks etc.were a bit over the top but all in all we definitely intend to visit again.

The cost of meals at this property was out of line with what was available in Stes Maries de la Mer and with our experience during the rest of our vacation, therefore, we did not eat in so we cannot comment on the quality of the meals. The pool area was lovely and well maintained.

Owing to some confusion, I was billed twice at the hotel, but that error was quickly resolved. Mas de la Foque is an absolutely first-rate place!
