I found the hotel acceptable but definitely NOT 4-star level. My room was very sloppily repainted, the air conditioning controls were not properly affixed to the wall, the door frame was chipped and scratched, the carpeting looked cheap, etc. together giving an overall impression of grubbiness. It appears to be a hotel trying to get by with a near-zero maintenance budget, and not succeeding! On the positive side, the reception staff seemed very professional, and the outdoor breakfast area, and the breakfast itself, were very nice.

Based on price, three nights for two people that close to Rome's major attractions for under £250 was great value. But... Rating this hotel at two-stars would be generous. It is a lot older and more tired than it appears. Our room was a good size but it had unpleasant stains on the headboards of the two single beds that had been pushed together to make a double, fittings that fell off the wall when touched in the bathroom, wallpaper hanging off in places, old furniture and television, et cetera. To be fair we were moved without argument to a much better room for our second and third nights but even that had many signs of wear and tear. The hotel lacked any dining facility or room service other than a cramped buffet-breakfast room. There were several restaurants nearby, of course, but it was disappointing not to have an eat-in option. Staff were competent but cold, which did not give a good feel to the quality of service they provided. First impressions of the area was that the hotel is situated in a back-street. This lessened as our stay continued, it seems much of Rome is that way! The price we paid was the price we were quoted but I did notice (too late) that the bill was prepared in Euros and converted to Sterling at an exchange rate favouring the hotel. Overall, we will certainly return to Rome but when we do we will certainly not return to the Viminale and we would not recommend it to others!

Excellent hotel. Great location and friendly staff. The hotel has a lot of character, and two great terraces. For Rome, the rooms were big. The only negative thing I have to say is that the walls of the rooms are thin! We were woken up by guests in the corridors, the elevator moving up and down and so on.

We were more than satisfied with our room. Close your windows at night, mosquitos come in, in September - humid weather. Our room & bath were quite large, clean and very nice on the 3rd floor. We were able to walk to restaurants and shops (very reasonable). Our only problem in Rome was the Green Tour Company. They advised us to get on a wrong bus when we wanted to go to the countryside. So just make sure when getting on the bus, ask before you sit down, if it is going to where you want to go. Two days in the city is enough, taking tours to the country side is really enjoyable. Get down to breakfast early if you want fresh fruit. but the breakfast was really good. We enjoyed our stay there, and would go back. The gentlemen at the desk were helpful, and it was very clean. Everyone was very nice.

My girlfriend and I just returned from our first trip to Italy where we stayed at the Viminale. It was a wonderful experience! The room was a wonderful size (from what we had read we were expecting tiny rooms), it was perfectly clean when we arrived and was tidied every day we were there (our towels were changed daily and the bed was made for us when we returned to the hotel at night). The location was perfect for us, close enough to walk to everything and was situated on a quiet sidestreet so at night we didn't hear any noise. It is also air conditioned which made sleeping very comfortable for us. For breakfast, they had a buffet that we could eat on a beautiful terrace. They even opened the breakfast for us early one day since we were booked for an excursion that left just as breakfast would've been opened. The Viminale exceeded all of our expectations and we would recommend it to anyone!

We were very pleased with our stay at Hotel Viminale both for the comfortable, clean accommodations including a spacious, modern bathroom, and the courteous, efficient service. There were few TV channels available but we weren't there for TV. We found the breakfast to be bountiful and good and the beverages in the minibar were very reasonably priced. The very quiet location was really convenient, with several good restaurants nearby. Tip: the best gelateria in Rome, Il Gelatone, is only a few short blocks away on Via dei Serpenti.

The hotel was acceptable - room was a decent size, beds rather rock-like though. The staff was nice enough to allow us to check in early as we arrived on an overnight train, around 8:30am. However, shortly after we got into the room the seal around the bottom of the toilet came unglued and we had a mess of water all over the floor. We told the front desk staff about it on our way out. It was indeed fixed when we came back, but the front desk attendant (a different one from when we checked in) was quite rude when we asked about it. Perhaps it was simply a miscommunication but we were rather put off by his attitude. The breakfast was acceptable except for the coffee. It came from an automatic dispenser and tasted awful! We couldn't even drink it, especially considering all the wonderful coffee available on every street in Italy.

Hotel Viminale was great. Quiet and 5-10 min walk from everything. 5 minutes from the train station and the bus stop. This was our first trip to Italy and the first place we stayed. We paid for it, better than $200 US a night, but was the biggest and best room we had during our 2 weeks in Italy. If you can get it under $150 EU, probably well worth it. Even had a bath tub.

Great location, good service. Accessible to the Termini (one bus stop only) and Via Nazionale and Via Cavour (the major streets of Rome). Breakfast was great, the best I had in Rome. Ayman and the other front office desk personnel was helpful. Room was clean and well maintained. Ideal for 2 of us. Will definitely recommend to all. First time, you might take some time to find it, so its best to call and ask for detailed directions. That goes for any hotel in Italy. Buying a Roma pass was very useful. Thanks Venere for helping me plan my trip.

We (mother and two adult daughters) stayed in two (a single and a twin) rooms for six nights. On the first night the air conditioning in the single room was not working properly. so a change of room was necessary the next day. The rooms were fine except the decor in the twin room was a bit tired and ready for an update. The breakfast was satisfactory, however at peak times, there was often a delay in replenishing the buffet table. There was a lovely garden terrace (available for breakfast) and a roof garden with views of the surrounds. The fitness room was a disappointment as it was clearly aimed at body building and muscle toning rather than aerobic exercise. The front desk staff were helpful and professional but a little more warmth in some of them, wouldn't go amiss.

Great place for everyone. Room was very roomy clean and with a balcony. The public areas for very nice terraces and a great breakfast outdoor area. I only put the noice to 9 as there was building works going on two doors down. Nothing the hotel could do about that. Fantastic location could walk to the collesseum and was so close the main train station and easy access to two other metro stations. Wonderful stay

We really enjoyed this hotel. It was very close to the center of Rome. The distance from the train station to the hotel was further than we had been told, and it was a bit difficult to find with the map that was given on the website, but once we found the hotel, it was great! The rooms were very spacious and clean. There was air conditioning and large washrooms. There was a market down the street from the hotel every morning selling all kinds of things. Great value for your dollar. We were very impressed with it and if we ever return to Rome in the future, we will definitely stay at this hotel.

relationship between price/quality is sufficient because via Venere.com they caherged 76 € but the regular displayed price in the rooms is appalling: 300, 450 for a so -called double. Along two days (2) there was NO hot water at all and no notice to customers was given, or explicit excuses, compensation or discount. Fairly bureaucratic behaviour.

Hotel in a quiet side street - no road noise. Our room - 106 was huge with dual aspect - lovely! We only stayed 2 nights but it was certainly well positioned for sight seeing particularly the Colosseum. Hotel seems to be next to THe Interior Ministry and when we stayed there was a 24 hour police-presence just down the road. Do take advantage of the transportation to and from the airport offered by the hotel - an excellent service and 20 Euros cheaper than a taxi. Good breakfast but small dining room that is crowded when busy - better in summer as there is also an outside dining terrace which looked great.

This hotel was in a very quiet location, not far from the railway station. It was very quaint and had a great rooftop area to take a bottle of wine, sit and take in the view. The room was a bit shabby and small but sufficient. The shower as in most hotels was average but at least it worked. Most of the staff were very helpful and courteous and we particularly liked the waiter who served breakfast, he was a character.Breakfast could also be taken on the terrace outside, which was a nice touch.

Satisfactory overall, with a decent price/quality ratio (well, almost as far as you can go in Rome). Somewhat poor welcoming and reception service, in particular if you are not comfortable with the "Roman attitude" but, on the other side, breakfast service was warm and cheerful (and breakfast more than decent as well). All the nice monuments are in walking distance, and the hotel is very near to the metro station (both Termini and Cavour). I’ve chosen the hotel in conformity with all the positive feedbacks on this page, and I wasn’t disappointed. By the way: the hotel rooms look much nicer than in the photo on the web site :). Via C. Balbo is a very safe place, as there was a carabinieri post 100 meters away from the hotel at day and night (because of a governmental institution at the corner of the street). Very close to the entrance of the hotel, some homeless people used to sleep at night, which was somewhat strange, but not really disturbing. Nevertheless, a very lovely place, with an ancient church as neighbourhood, which gives a somewhat romantic feeling when sitting on the terrace for breakfast in the morning. Breakfast was delicious, with fresh fruits: instead of coffee, perhaps prefer tea or call for a cappuchino which is also served for free. All the staff, specially at the reception, was very helpful, friendly and kind. Enjoy the beautiful terraces at night, watching the birds, but - please - don't talk and laugh out loudly, with respect to the other guests.

Hotel Viminale is not in the nearest neighborhood to Pantheon but close to Colosseum and Capitol. Viminale is convenient to Termini and Piazza Venezia, located behind the Ministry of the Interior on a quiet, secure street. View out the front windows is to a high wall topped by Roman pines--not very picturesque from lower floors. There are no restaurants or shops on the street, so you have to walk a bit, but it is an easy walk over to Via Nazionale for shopping, or to the Repubblica metro station. The room was quite large, the bed comfortable, and the pink marble bathroom spotless. Best water pressure in the shower anywhere I have stayed in Italy! On the negative side, the furniture has seen better days, the carpet could be vacuumed a bit more thoroughly, and the mini-fridge motor was a little loud. But the price was certainly right, the front desk staff was helpful and friendly.

The hotel was in a quiet street, guarded by armed police becauce of the ministry next door. When we arrived, the man on the reception was not very polite. With sneakers and jeans we probably didn´t look like upper class guests, but we had booked a room so he gave us one. There was no introduction of the hotel, so we had to find our room ourself and later we even had to ask for breakfast time and other services. Breakfast was great. The room was very used, exspecialy the bathroom. The door didn´t close, the cupboard wasn´t realy fixed on the wall and different other furnitures were also broken. But there was a nice view to St. Maria Maggiore and you could reach many historic places within a short walk.

Although the inanimate aspects of the hotel were good, the staff seemed to be unhappy and stressed which made them indifferent and stone faced to us. Would highly recommend Viminale Rome. Ideal location for Station, airport transits and city highlights. Room quality/spaciousness the best we've seen in many European capitals.Surprisingly quiet too. Roof terrace a bonus. Even breakfast is a fun experience. Try it!

our room was clean, quiet but very tight on space. The shower was very powerful. Breakfast was excellent. The hotel was about a 7 minute walk from Termini station, do not get ripped off by cab drivers who wanted 20 euro for what should be a 3 euro cab drive. We walked to hotel, but had to drag suitcases over the cobble streets. The shuttle bus from Ciampino airport takes you to Termini station for 8 euros, good value. We would stay at the Viminale again.

I would never recommend this hotel to anyone. The air conditioning did not work, resulting in a very hot room. The mattress turned out to be a pad of foam on a sheet of chipboard so was very soft and resulted in an even hotter and sweatier night than would have been the case if only the air con did not work. It is obvious the hotel is in serious need of renovation and decorating. To top it all, the following morning we discovered that there was no hot water, and hadn't been since the previous day. They failed to tell us this on arrival and could give no indication of when an engineer might be called in. We had booked for four nights but checked out after one, and we didn't even get a refund for the unsatisfactory stay we had experienced. Breakfast was also very poor, and looked extremely unappetising. We found a newly renovated B&B round the corner for 80 euros a night, a saving of 25 per night on Viminale and far more comfortable and better equipped. Not the way you expect to spend on night of your honeymoon!

Our stay at this hotel was better than expected for a 3 star hotel...congenial staff, Fabrizio and Claudio welcoming us, with helpful information about the surroundings, Vittorio serving a delightful breakfast each morning, every bit as good as shown on the site, with an outdoor seating area for good weather...our room was very spacious and comfortable...there was a hand held shower in the tub, but no real enclosed shower, not a problem for us, just different than what we expected...a roof garden on the 4th and 5th floors provided a quiet getaway with a view...we would definitely recommend this hotel for it's location, within walking distance of all major tourist sites...public transport by bus is readily available as an alternative, if wanted...get a good map before you go...enjoy!

When we arrived they said that a mirror was broken in the room they had reserved for us, but that a room in one of their other hotels was ready for us (they have about 10 hotels in the area). We were brought to that other hotel, Hotel Torino, which was a decent three-star hotel (they say it's four-star), with a nice roof-terrace for breakfast. Probably the Viminale is very similar, although I liked the building of the Viminale and the location a bit better than the Torino's. It seems that they also have a roof terrace. Overall I would say that these hotels are o.k., nothing fancy but nice, clean, and with friendly service. Value-for-money is o.k., too, considering the exorbitant prices of most other hotels in Rome ...

On arrival at the Viminale we were transfered to a sister hotel Pace Elvetia, (4 star- better!) because the top floors had no water due to a pump failure. Reading your reports this happens regularly! Staff were excellent at both, but the bathroom at the Elvetia left something to be desired as the toilet seat and cover would not stay up, and the shower would not have accommodated anyone bigger than me! The hotel was central, just a few yards from the Piazza Venetzia, and generally was well appoointed with good breakfasts.

The hotel is in an excellent location just 10 mins walk from most major sites. Lots of cafes. restaraunts nearby. The double room was spacious, excellent bathroom/shower. The singles were very pokey though, one just had a shower attachment and just enough room to actually sit on the loo, the other had a proper shower cubicle but the shower door was broken. However, the hotel overall is very nice and the breakfast was excellent, which was a suprise after reading lots of poor reviews about this. Lots of choice, lots of coffee, very friendly service. Besides the complaints of the singles i think it was fairly priced. Through ignorance we got caught out on the metro system and were fined 50 euros each as we hadn't validated our tickets - didn't understand the system. There was no negotiating, very offcious. so check out the details on how to validate tickets.

Apart from the bed being two singles pushed together with an overhang, the room was great, and the hotel fine. Although we could have been a bit nearer the Centro, the location was very civilised.

Friendly staff, room comfortable with great views, hot water on demand & room warm (only draw back that rooms not very big, however adequate for our needs). Breakfast was very good - a buffet with a selection of cereals, fruit, fruit juice, meats, cheese, bread & pastries - certainly kept you going till lunch time. Also very handy 24 hr check-in service. Hotel very well located. 5 minute walk from the ryanair bus drop off point at the termini station. Also very central for all the major tourist attractions (colosseum & forum 5-10 minutes walk) even vatican city is a comfortable walk from hotel - but may want to get the metro back!!

We know little of the Viminale, for on arrival, we were informed that a water problem precluded our staying, and we were sent to a nearby sister hotel (with one more star). The Gallia was located just off the Piazza di Santa Maria Maggiore, a wonderful starting point for each day. It was convenient to Termini, but in a pleasant, safe neighborhood. Rooms were large, clean, very comfortable. But there were a few negatives: breakfast, while plentiful, was just adequate, and cheeses, meats and yogurts that should have been on ice were not; internet access required the purchase of a time card; and desk personnel were not uniformly warm and helpful. On balance, while pricey for an economizing traveler, location and comfort are certainly pluses at the Gallia. Justine Aspinwall and Les Harriman

This review is not for The Viminale Hotel. Due to problems with a water leak (I think) at the Viminale we stayed at the Hotel Gallia instead. The standard of Hotel Gallia was quite OK. Our room had no safe box which was a disappointment but otherwise we were satisfied with the room. However the employees in the reception did not provide information that the hotel had a roof terrace. The weather was lovely so we had been pleased to visit it during our four nights stay. The Gallia Hotel is OK regarding cleanliness and spaciousness of rooms but very impersonal. I don´t think we will stay there nex time.

Bathroom: dead lightbulb, hanheld shower, no shower curtain, broken chair, glass shelf under mirror can fall down any minute. Main room: safe out of order, remote control for TV did not work, impossible to watch CNN and other foreign channels due to weak and distorted antenna signal. Elevator out of order for the better half of our five day stay. Breakfast is ok, but expect to wait 15+ minutes for a table on busy days. We admired the way the lady tending the breakfast managed to manage the chaos. Room size was ok, but I guess we got the only one with a balcony.

I would never stay at Viminale again. The shower didn't work properly - the basin instantly filled with water and wouldn't drain, forcing us to take lightning-quick showers while turning the water on and off so that it only ran while we were rinsing off. Even then, the water overflowed the basin onto the bathroom floor. When we told the front desk about the problem, they said there was no one available to fix it and we should just wait and see if it continued to be a problem the next day. Fortunately, we were leaving the next day because, overall, the staff were unfriendly, the room was dirty, the shower was broken, and the bed was so bad you could feel the board under the mattress when you laid down. We stayed in 3 different 3-star hotels during our trip to Italy. We would definitely return to the other 2 (the Virgilio in Rome, and Hotel Sant'Agata outside of Sorrento), but never again to Viminale. I highly recommend the Virgilio - it was in a similar, but better location; the staff was wonderful; the rooms were clean; and the price was better.

Although the Viminale is only a 10 minute walk from the train station (walkable with suitcases), it is in a very quiet street and we always managed a good night's sleep! It was lovely to eat breakfast in the little patio area hidden away at the back of the hotel.

The old chap at reception was funny and warm. The room was a tiny single room, but i found it to be full of character. There is a full gym in the basement and you're regarded a little freaky if you want to go down there to the dungeon! But its there! Location was good; an easy walk from the train station and convenient for most locations. Could walk to the colosseum within 15 minutes and up towards the Quirinale Hill... in fact i walked to all sites and as far as Trastevere (which is the best place for food and drink). It was nothing special but it had a certain character and charm. The road its on has 24 hr police due to nearby headquarters (feels safe). Not bad at all if you spend most of your time outside! I would stay there again.

We were absolutely delighted with the location (great walking distance to all hot spots and transport), and the staff. Excellent English speaking, and we will always remember Gigi on the front desk, and the man serving the coffees (Piccolo man - as he called himself, as he is a tad short)- both extremely friendly and welcoming. Also, the restaurant on the same street is excellent - highly recommend the mixed fish grill and the house red wine. For female travellers, I think this hotel is ideal. It is opposite a Ministry office - so there are security cameras all around the street the hotel is on, a constant presence of police (nice to watch them too :-), overall a very safe area to be based. The room was basic, but we spent minimal time there - walking all day, back for showers, then out and about for a meal and sight seeing at night. Would definitely stay there again, and am happy to recommend this hotel to all other travellers.

The above comments do not relate to The original booking in the Hotel Viminale since we did not stay there. Upon our arrival at the Viminale we were informed that due to overbooking we were being transferred to their sister hotel in Rome The Pace Helvitia. This represented an upgrade, at no additional cost to us, and turned out to be a much more convenient hotel, nearer to the centre of Rome, within easy walking distance of all the main tourist sights. We found the desk staff most helpful, the rooms comfortable, the breakfast plentiful if a little predictable, and were generally more than pleased with the change in hotel. I have checked the reports you have previously received on the Pace Helvitia and the only crticism I would echo from the other reports is the references to the rather miniscule lifts. We certainly experienced nothing but helpfulness and courtesy from the staff... but then that might be because we treated them with courtesy and friendliness!!... We will certainly stay there again.

When we return to Rome we will definitely be staying here again. Staff were really friendly and helpful once we broke through their initial reserve and the breakfast waiter is a joyful character. Explore the area around Via Panisperna for some great bars and restaurants in this low-key but delightful neighbourhood.
