Hotel Reviews St. Moritz
Couple plus mother
USA, Oct 2009
This hotel was a huge disappointment. You must walk up some stairs to get to the elevator, which is the size of a phone booth and only works if the last user remembers to shut both the inner and outer doors. The rooms were VERY small and the bedding extremely basic. Mother's room was smaller than a dorm room, with a single bed. The furniture was shabby. The shower was very small (my husband had to enter sideways and even that was tight.) The young lady and young man at the front desk were very friendly and helpful, but the older man, who unfortunately was there most often, was horribly rude. He yelled at each of us at least once for such infractions as being so brazen as to ask where the breakfast room was on our first morning. He apparently was upset because he had told us that when checked in (after 10 hours traveling and walking up the 3 flights of stairs). When we apologized for having asked, he mumbled in Italian under his breath in a tone that made it clear he had no use for us. Rest assured, we are not demanding travelers and have all traveled in Europe before, so we know that the accommodations are not always what we would expect in the US. We were fully prepared to stay in a three star hotel. In fact, we loved our 3-star hotel in Florence, which we also booked through venere.com. This hotel just does not warrant a 3-star rating, either for the service or the accommodations. The only redeeming part of the hotel was the breakfast service, which was polite and adequate.

The hotel St Moritz is well located not to far from Termini station and also within easy walking distance of most of the major historical sites with-in the centre of Rome.

Excellent location, safe neighborhood, close to train station. Room was clean. Excellent breakfast. City bus stop in front of the hotel. One problem = the manager. Always too busy to listen that our air conditioner did not work well and that there was water linking in the bathroom. We stayed 6 nights and we had a fan to help us sleep without air conditioning. Except that too busy manager, night staff and ladies serving breakfast were very nice.

The hotel was well located, clean and felt secure. Our family room was a good size and again, clean and comfortable. Breakfast was served outside and was fine. We stayed in the hottest August on record and the air conditioning was just not up to it. The road outside is busy so it was rather warm at night to say the least. But I would stay again, just not in August.

We were young couple and it was really nice to stay in St. Moritz Great location! Even we had the room next to reception and the room had windows on Via Nazionale (which is very noisy), the room was great and not noisy. Really nice breakfast (which is served in a nice garden type terrance), good staff, clean! wonderful air-conditioned. For 4-5 days it`s the best

We stayed here 3 night, and it's a great location for seeing the sites of Rome. A 10 minute walk to the Metro to go to the Vatican. A half hour to walk to the Colisseum, the Forum, etc. A 20 minute walk to the Trevi Fountain. (I'm estimating walk times...) It's about a 15 walk from the train station, which was an easy walk, even with luggage. Our room was quite spacious, and the tv had cable news...the first news we'd seen in 2 weeks! The bathroom was decent, shower worked well. The second night we were there, the AC started leaking. We kept it on!!! It continued to work, but the leak didn't get fixed while we were there. We were cool, but it was drip, drip, drip onto a towel...This hotel does have a small elevator to get luggage up to your room. The breakfast was okay, great cappucino.

Overall our experience was positive at this hotel. Our room was a great value for the price. We extended our stay. The hotel is in a prime location walking distance from from most sights and safe even after dark. Public transport was very close. The room was very quiet and breakfast was good. The manager however, was irratible even when asked a small request. The young staff people at the front desk were professional and helpful and we were happy when they came on duty. I would stay here again.

It war really disappointing for us that it was not possible to have breakfast at the terrace as indicated although the weather was perfect. The breakfast-times were not like indicated at the web-site and there were no excuses when the air-condition didn´t work. Excellent ist the location of the hotel and the quietness of the rooms.

This small hotel located on the 3rd. floor of a building on important Avenue Via Nazionale, is a pleasant and clean property. However, the only 1920 elevator fails to work many times and carrying luggage up three floors is not pleasant. Rooms are spacious and clean. Toilet in room is large and functional. Service from staff is just a bit scarce. As there is no minibar in the rooms we requested ice from the kitchen, and never received any. Breakfast is only till 09.30 sharp on weekends, and no service is offered after that. Hotel does not have a business center, so if you do not carry a notebook, it is not possible to use internet.

The hotel, while basic, was clean, quiet and in a great location--just a few hundred meters from a metro stop and a few walking minutes to the Trevi Fountain. All the other sites could be reached on foot as well. It is on a main street so restaurants, pubs, a grocery store, and a pharmacy are all a stone's throw away from the front door. My husband and I would most certainly choose this hotel again not only because of the convenience but because of the value.

We stayed at this hotel for three nights. The hotel is very well located in the city center, very close to the most of the sight seeings of Rome. We walked from the hotel to the most of the visiting places. Also is about 400 meters from Republica metro station. The rooms are big, with all facilities specified on the site. The internet connection is very good and free. The breakfast is ok, served with a very good coffee. Also the staff of the hotel is very welcoming and they speak english very well. Regarding the disadvantages of this hotel, I think that the room was a little bit noisy due to the fact that we stayed in room no 1, and it was situated near reception were the staff was talking quite much early in the morning, and the noise of the street was quite unpleasant. All in all, this is a very good hotel to stay for a nice holiday in Rome. We will stay here again.

I was quite relieved as I booked this hotel for a last minute trip in the summer peak season. I was happy to be able to get a room in central Rome last minute but wary of what I might find. I ended up very pleased. The Hotel St. Moritz is very centrally located. Within walking distance to most of the historical sites. Also conveniently located close to major bus routes and subway. I stayed in s single room that was close to the reception area. While it can be a bit noisy, the room was perfect for a single traveler. The room was relatively small but with high ceilings. The room was cleaned well every day and the bathroom was spotless with a powerful water pressure shower. I was also quite relieved to have good a/c as my trip was in July and the summer Roman heat was intense. All in all very comfortable an convenient hotel. Great for the price. I recommend a stay here.

The hotel was placed centrally, about 15-20 minutes from Termini, the central station. The metro was nearer, at plaza republica almost 10 minutes. With the metro you can go to St Peter's Basilica, to Spanish steps etc. The hotel was good, with friendly personel. The only complain is that the room was a little small.

We have stayed in St. Moritz before, we choose it because it is located on Via Nazionale, a three minute walk from the main railway station, and it is on one of the main traffic routes for the whole of Rome. It is a short walk to Pzza. Navonna and S. Pietro. It can be a little noisy if your room is overlooking v. nazionale, but you are on a main troroughfare so don't be surprised. The breakfasts are Italian-style but okay, the staff are excellent and location couldn't be better. It was worth the money and we will stay again.

The refridgerator had mould on the beverages, the room we stayed in was in the main hallway, so we heard every single person walking pass at all hours of the night. The location was not very convenient to the major attractions, most were either a long walk away (greater that 3 km) or you could only acces them by bus or other local transportation. the price for three days of stay was too expensive for the service provided.

This hotel had a great location but it's not a 3.5 star hotel as they rate. Shouldn't be more then 1.5-2 stars. Our room had mold on the ceiling. If you're not planning to spend much time in your room, then this may work out.

(+):Central location. Near Termini and metro station "Piazza Repubblica". Walking distance to many sights. There is a market right opposite. Extra: The room with the canopy is 23.

Staff at desk on arrival very friendly and helpful. Breakfast was inadequate - bread, yogurt, and cereal - no cheese or meat offered. Staff appeared surprised when we asked for a second coffee. We had seen the breakfast elsewhere described as "hearty" - NOT. First room we were shown, while in a quieter part of the hotel, had a filthy, stained brownish thin carpet. We were shown to a better room on the street side (dark blue carpet, so not sure of the cleanliness - at least it didn't show) but the street noise was terrible the first night. We asked the following morning to switch back and it became clear that since we had asked to change upon arriving, we apparently had used up our option to do that (the (new) desk clerk made it clear we had already changed once). Thus, we purchased earplugs, which worked. While the rooms had recently been renovated, there were few wall plugs, the shower door kept falling off the track, the furniture was rather beaten up. The location was good, the price was good, but this is NOT a three-star hotel as advertised. Please tell people they do not need a cab for this hotel - it's a 15-minute walk with luggage - but the cabbies at Termini Train Station do not hesitate to rip you off and take you on a circuitous route to what is essentially around the corner (Via Nazionale). Watch as well for them trying to distract you by pointing at something while they hit the button on the meter that doubles the fare. Challenge them and they back off.

We've stayed my mother and I for a week end in this hotel by the end of November 07. The location is excellent. Next to Termini Station (5 minutes walking). :-)

This hotel is situated in the center of Rome. You can walk to all the beautifull buildings and churches and other sights you want to see. The room (27)in which we stayed was good. In the hotel are a few small rooms that could be less enjoyable. The breakfast was good enough, every day fresh bread, ham, sausage, lots of marmalade, milk, fruit juice, coffee and thee, yoghurt, boiled eggs.

We stayed for a week in August 07 in a quad room - 21. Plenty of space, double glazing excellent (filtered out all noise from busy Via Nazionale though occasional vibrating bed from heavy lorries), no noise from other rooms. Air conditioning marvellously efficient, beds firm and comfortable, room always clean and ?Ikea decor. Best of all the staff - considerate and genuinely cheerful. Pretty courtyard eating area, good breakfast and hotel within 20 minutes walk of most attractions. It's not "high end" but it is very good value for money.

We loved the hotel and the people that work there. Everybody was very nice to us and very helpful. The breakfast area is beautiful and so is the food. It's true that the rooms are a bit small, but honestly, how much time are you going to spend in there anyways. The bathrooms are nice and big and everything is very clean. I would recommend this hotel to anyone who wants to see Rome and be in walking distance of all the major sites. Its is a safe area and close to the Metro and all other public transportation. Between photograph at web page and reality it's a big difference regarding outside. In via nazionale there are 2 houses having a black (dirty) front and one of these is St.Moritz. But internal photographs corresponds. Rooms are clean. Unfortunately we had a room (no 6) on 1st floor of the hotel (which is 3rd of the building) which everybody had to pass to reach breakfast which results in some noise, but during the night it was silent (window to a small patio), it's just a bit clairaudient. But what's really great with this hotel is the location: 5 minutes to metro (piazza de la repubblica), 10 minutes by walk to piazza venezia, 10 minutes to quirinale. Price is high but I think okay in relation to quality and location.

Very good location on Via Nazionale, easy access to major bus routes, walking distance from all major attractions of Centro Storico, very pleasant management and staff, access with luggage is slow because of tiny lift / 2nd floor reception but this is only a factor arriving /departing. This is an excellent hotel if you want to use your vacation to see and explore rather than stay in your hotel room. The location of the hotel is spendid. And if that is your first incentive, then you should choose this hotel. The price for the room is well worth the stay. This is maybe not the hotel for couples with children. We do NOT recommend this terrible hotel. Este hotel es horrible! It was awful! We travel Europe often, so we are familiar with size, etc. of the European hotel rooms. This was a nightmare! It was very expensive for the quality. We finally were allowed to check in 5 hours later. They made us pay for 2 rooms becuase the Venere confirmation was wrong, they said. So,we had to pay for a room inside the breakfast room- very noisy. The junior suite was small and the "double bed" was 2 twins pushed together. The extra bed was a metal framed fold out with no mattress only a blanket. Towels for both rooms were table cloths. The satellite TV advertised was only Italian TV channels, found no English channels. The shower was a slow trickle of water. The pictures of the rooms you pay for online YOU DO NOT GET! website photos are very deceptive, actual hotel was small, unfriendly, very noisy, unclean, not modern, elevator/lift is very dangerous,it should not be open for use. The view for the top room was a disgusting alley and noisy all day and night. There were plenty of other hotels in the area, please find somewhere else.

The staff is very friendly. Concerning the traffic, the rooms are very quiet - but the handling of the plates and cups at breakfast time will wake you up. Most of the rooms are much smaller than the one on the fotograph in the internet. It is near enough to the main attractions and to the main station, so that you can do / see almost everything on foot. Concerning the price and the how the hotel is situated we were quite happy with the hotel - the only drawback is the loud preparation of the breakfast.

We booked a quad family room for 2 adults and 2 girls ages 10 and 16 and paid above average price for the time of year. We did not get a quad room but a small twin room with a put - me - up bed jammed into one end of the room. The bed was uncomfortble and covered with musty old sleeping bags zipped together. There was absolutely no space left in the room. The only furniture we had was a chest of drawers which was not openable due to the bed being jammed against it. The room had no natural light or ventilation. There was a walk in cupboard which had a window which when opened ( it was covered in film so no view when closed ) allowed a view of a dirty and junk filled courtyard. The shower room was inadequate for 2 persons yet alone 4 and the shower was a trickle of water thus making a shower at least 4 times longer than usual. For a family to shower this did not allow a quick turn round in mornings and evenings. The shower room did have a window allowing a view to another junk filled courtyard through the dirty and mouldly window. The rooms had not been refurbished and were dirty and dull. Do not book a quad room at this hotel! There is no lounge and bar. To avoid the unlit bedroom we would have liked to sit in a lounge. This comprised of 2 seats in reception and a few seats in a corridor. Dining room is very small and basic.Although weather was warm the ' astro turf ' courtyard was not open thus squeezing guests in to a very small space. You need to be down at 8.00 am or wait for a seat. The room and hotel spoilt our holiday to Rome. I would advise travellers to avoid this hotel at all costs.

Hotel is within walking distance of Termini station and Metro. This was handy as there was a taxi driver strike while we were in Rome. We felt very secure in our surroundings and the Hotel was closed to everyone but guests after 6:00 pm. The location is close to a number of old Rome historic sites within walking distance. The staff were friendly and helpful. There is a small but useful lift to get your luggage up to your floor, it worked very well for us. Breakfast was bright and cheery in an outdoor private plaza, with a fresh cappacino delivered to your table. Our room was comfortable, with air conditioning and a fridge. Our stay was very enjoyable and we would definately stay here again.

We stayed at the St Moritz for four days and found the hotel to be very centrally located to all of the popular sites. The hotel was clean and fairly modern. The staff spoke excellent english and on the whole were friendly. The only criticism I would have is that there was not much variety available for breakfast, and although the TV was advertised as having satalite channels, we could only find 2 in english. This was not too much of a problem as we did not spent much time in the room.

We booked our room at St. Moritz based on comparing reviews for this and many other properties in Rome. We were pleasantly surprised with our accomodations. We had concerns based on what other reviews stated, such as: "having to carry luggage up 3 flights of stairs",...THERE'S AN ELEVATOR; there were many complaints concerning cigarette smoke in the hotel: WE ARE NON-SMOKERS AND THERE WAS NO ISSUE WITH CIGARETTE SMOKING; there were complaints about the complimentary breakfasts which we found to be absolutely sufficient with cappacino, danish, hard-cooked eggs, juice, yogurt, and milk. The staff is VERY nice and VERY eager to assist. I inquired where to purchase a plug converter to charge our camera and they simply supplied us with one that they had at their front desk. we never had to buy one. We would definately recommend St. Moritz to others. The rooms were small, but sufficient. The private bathrooms were kept very clean.

The location of the hotel is very handy both for the city centre and for the train station which can easily be reached with the bus stopping just outside the hotel which is just two stops away from the station.the room was very spacious and comfy, the only disadvantage was that you had to pay extra for air conditioning and leaving the windows open at night meant having the noise from the road just outside the hotel coming in, but nothing that couldn't be managed.Sometimes you can also feel the floor and bed vibrate when busses and traffic go past :). All considered this hotel has a great relationship between price and quality and I would definitely recommend it and stay there again.

We were very pleased with our room, although we had a few minor surprises: * The quantity of hot water varied, especially in the morning, making showering mildly unpleasant.
* The room's walls weren't especially thick and we could occasionally hear people running around our floor, or people slamming the door to the floor. * There wasn't enough noise to actually bother us though.
* The lowest floor of the hotel is about three storeys up a somewhat narrow winding staircase (only really troublesome when you're carrying luggage). There is a small elevator as well, but it seemed too rickety for our taste.
On the good side: * There is a Despar (grocery store) just across the street, and a good Chinese place around the corner.
* Even in the middle of July we found the in-room air conditioner sufficient (although by no means frigid). Also, ours had a built in timer, meaning the room could already be chilled when we returned in the evening.
* The room was very, very dark.
* Breakfast was pleasant, if small, including coffee, juice, milk, cereal, hardboiled eggs, and a mix of pastries.
* The hotel is pretty conveniently located. Near Termini, the Coliseum, and reasonably close to the Vatican.
* When we needed to leave a day early (and not until after 11), the staff didn't charge us for the last night of our reservation.

Nice little hotel near the centre of Rome. Recommended by a friend. Air con was handy even though it was May. Breakfast area outside not the Ritz but the breakfast was exactly what I wanted. Room was very good. On the inside so very quiet although ours looked onto an internal courtyard on the same level. Rooms were cleaned every day. Staff were excellent. Good english and very helpful and friendly. The hotel is in walking distance of all the major spots. I recommend the Est!Est!Est! around the corner. It's a great traditional pizzeria.

This hotel is OK when you plan to visit Rome and you don't want to spend a lot of time in the hotel room. The location is excellent, many of the sites can be reached by foot. Please ask the reception when breakfast is served ( we passed breakfast twice, because the buffet was closed when we arrived.

The hotel is excellently located in the downtown. The hotel is on the 2nd floor in an old building, but there isn't a lift for guests. The staff was kind and speaks good English. Despite of being a three stars hotel, our room was a bit weak for that. There wasn't lock on the door inside, and there were rather sticky bedspread and curtains, but staff changed our towels every day. The breakfast menu was stable; jam and teacake. In conclusion, it is a perfect choice to stay the night and hang in the city for the day. We would definitaly stay there again.

Our room was inconveniently located right behind the reception desk and on a busy street.

I stayed here 4 years ago (March 2002) it seems as if it's undergone renovation since which is a good thing. I was a single female traveller, and while I felt realtively safe while in the hotel, I didn't think too much of it upon arriving. My room was exceptionally small even for a single room and when family tried to call, late at night, they were unable to get through as if seems the desk staff might have been sleeping. I had a view of a dirty courtyard. It's definitely close to transport, and in a relatively decent area. I wouldn't stay there again (and didn't when I returned with my husband the next year) but if it was inexpensive that I'd say go for it, the location is good.

No indication lobby is up 4 flights of curving stairs - even sign out front says "first floor". The bar mentioned in the website is nonexistent and the lobby is tiny and filled with suitcases of those checking either in or out. Room was very small and air conditioning costs extra!!! The breakfast was routine, and the employees were not friendly at all. Also, at least one room opens directly unto the breakfast room. That said, the location is very central and you can walk to almost all the main sites.

A hotel with very good location; close to the Train Station as well as to Ancient Rome. Recently renovated and good bathrooms.

The hotel is near the train station. We enjoyed our stay, the room was great and by the courtyard and quiet. The floors in the room were even warm which was nice with the weather being rather cold. The bathroom had a rather small shower otherwise fine. The employee at the desk went out of his way to show us where to get tickets to the metro down the street. Employees were very helpful with any questions we asked. Our room was on the 4th floor. The halls were being painted when we were there, but that did not affect the room. There is a lift in the hotel. The breakfast was good. Over all, I think the hotel is a great deal for the money and a good location.

This small hotel located in the heart of the main shopping area in Rome and very accesible to all the major sights was a VERY pleasant surprise. The desk clerks were VERY helpful and guided us to some excellent local restaurants and assisted us with transportation when it was needed. We were warmly welcomed, our rooms were ready on arrival and spotlessly cleaned each and every day, and despite being on one of Rome's busiest streets, the rooms were very quiet and peaceful. In-room TV, small refrigerator, and hair dryer in the bathroom were among the amenities. In all, it was a VERY pleasant stay and I will definitely stay here again should I venture to Rome in the future.

The hotel was not very welcoming from the outside & to be honest was pretty average. I wouldn't really recommend it to my family or friends however, the location was good to visit the various attractions. On a general note the standard of food in Rome left a lot to be desired and I've eaten in many euro cities.

Sejour tres agreable. A recommandé

Location good. Breakfast and service during breakfast above average for this category of hotels. Facilities ordinary but absolutely good value for money compared to many other hotels in Rome. We would stay at this hotel again due to the very reasonable price and the convenient location.

Volvería a dormir ahí.

The room was good - spacious for Italy, clean, and good location to get around. It was close to the subway to get to the Vatican and a 15-20 minute walk to the Ancient City. The staff was helpful and friendly.

Was a bit dissapointed as pictures of hotel looked nice but when we got there it was a different story! and the bathroom stank so we had to keep the window open to air the room...they supplied cold breakfast which is ok for the Summer but maybe should have a hot brekkie for the winter period...only bonus of the hotel was that it was about 10/15 mins walk to the Colesseum, Wedding Cake etc etc...also the man on reception when we checked out was meant to order us a cab and he didnt! so make sure you communicate clearly to them!!

The hotel and the location were great. The only thing we dreaded was climbing the stairs to the 3rd floor (that is where the hotel is located) by the end of the day.

The building from outside is not realy attractive but the rooms are very charming. Breakfast in italian Hotels??? Yes, we did it and are pleasant surprised. There are sweets like croissants and donuts, rolls, cornflakes, milk, o-juice and typical variations of italian coffee! The Location is so central that we have seen all sights by feet (inside 3 days)! All in all it was a very nice stay and - we will be back!!!
