We stayed 4 nights. The staff was kind. The location was excellent. However, the breakfast could be better. it was so poor! Secondly, the air-conditioner of the toilet was so loud, as a main point of discomfort. Last of all, I can say that the decoration was so old-fashioned. We loved the location however due to price-service (breakfast, etc.) comparison, we may not choose this hotel again...

A perfect location for walking to all the best spots in Rome but pretty expensive for the tiny room and incredibly basic accommodations. There are better hotels for less in great neighborhoods in Rome.

The air condition didn´t work! We made several complaints about it but they didn´t fix it. Exellent with the sign on the main street, easy to find the hotel! Excellent situated, everything within walking distance.

Hotel was nice, clean and staff was friendly and resourceful. The directions from the train station was not accurate. We have two different taxi drivers unsure where the hotel street was. Once you find the hotel it's all great from there. Close to Piazza Navona for dining- a walk to the Colessium area.

Everything was OK (including breakfast and bathroom), except size of room. Location hard to beat. Internet should be free of charge or at least possible to buy access per hour instead of whole day.

Loved the location of this hotel! Close to Campo di Fiori, Piazza Navonna, the Forum, etc. as well as shopping and restaurants. Showers were a little small - if I dropped the soap, it stayed dropped! - but the room had everything we needed. Staff was helpful and friendly.

During my stay the staff were knowledgable regarding the questions I had, however they were not friendly at all. I encountered two different men throughout my stay who were working the front desk and every time I walked by them or approached them about a question/concern they did not greet me nor respond with any smile. It happened every occasion

Hotel in great location. Walking distance to just about everything in Rome. Glad we took a cab from train station to hotel. Don't know if we would have found it by bus. Had to pay for WiFi and could only get it in the lobby even though was told that we could connect in room. Staff friendly and helpful. Rooms very clean but old. Would stay here again and would recommend to others.

Apart from the comment on the rooms, only two things remain to be mentioned. The breakfast hostes asked for room-number without saying good morning, wihout a smile. On one occasion she asked three times. Also on one occasion she seemed to be in a lousy mood, slamming chairs and dishes. Why not invest in pads from IKEA to silence the very loud noice from the chairs (made mainly by us guests)

Although the rooms are less spacious than other hotels they were more than adequate in terms of cleanliness and on suite facilities for our needs. We took our son and his wife for a short break for their first trip to Rome. There is no bar in the hotel but its proximity to the ancient sites and piazzas more than make up for this. Taxis to and from the airport were arranged through the hotel prior to our arrival. This was our second stay at this hotel and we would certainly return again. LC UK

Very small rooms Good cleaning of rooms and the cleaning staff was very friendly. The desk staff was not very interested in showing good service and was acting a kind of "we dont have to be top service minded, because the guests will come anyway as long as we are located in the centre of Rome"

A good place to stay in Rome, a nice hotel and a very good position near campo der fiori. Good room good breakfast and good service. We will come back! At the arrival at saturday eveneing we had a problem - our bag remained on the taxi. Unfortunately the night porter wasn't very friendly and helpful. The next days we were very glad with the porters help.

This hotel was great value for money, great location and very, very clean. I think though that Smeraldo is more of a guest house than a hotel. The public areas are quite small and not ideal for relaxing, though it is an old building. I would highly recommend Smeraldo to anyone.

I was looking for a hotel near Piazza Navona and this one was correctly rates as very close (less than 10 min walk and we were there!) It's in a very hidden "viccolo", but it's cozy. Breakfast was what we needed (could have some fresh fruits though) and appartment was also ok (small room, but good shower, etc, etc). All in all, I'd reccomend it to another person or would even get back there.

The shower was not warm enough and water flow was slow. It had a shower tray surrounded by curtain, not glass door, so after each shower the floor was flooded. Otherwise we liked the hotel and would consider staying there again on a future visit.

The location of the hotel is perfect. It really gives something extra to your stay in Rome. The only downside is the shower, which is way too small. and for a couple, two seperate matrasses isn't that nice. But as I said, the location (and also the staff) makes it all worth staying!

We have been to Rome 12 times & this hotel 5 times, unbeatable location at a very good price. Rooms are adequate but staff does not go out of their way to make you feel welcome and can sometimes be rude. If you are looking for advice, suggestions or friendliness, I would not recommend this hotel. If that does not matter to you, as it does not to us, it is a great location.

The hotel is located in an area that lends to easy access to many of the major tourist sites. The staff of the hotel were very competent and rooms were kept very clean. The room was small but met my needs. Seems that the televisions don't work but that is probably a good thing. I wish they had decaf coffee with their breakfast but the food was pretty much the standard items and fresh. I would classify it as an economy hotel....modest rates and no frills. I would definitely stay there again. This was my first trip to Rome. The hotel is very close to a major transportation hub at Largo Argentina which was great for finding my way back to the hotel when I got lost.

Details of how to get there on the bus (64 or 40) said 9 stops there were 6! Very good area for eating out near the Piazza Novana.Avoid the square itself. Very good for central Rome sights. Excellent shuttle bus to the airport with chatty driver. Staff at breakfast lovely, but ordinary coffee FOUL.Ask for cappucino instead.American students rather noisy at breakfast but that is not the fault of the hotel

The location of this hotel was excellent and the price was very reasonable. I would recommend this hotel to anyone. As I was expecting the room to be quite small, I was fully satisfied with the size of the room on arrival. The room and bathroom were very clean and the room was made up daily. It had aircon which was welcomed after a hot July day walking around Rome. The breakfast in the morning was good as well which consisted of bread rolls, cheese, ham, cereals, pastries etc and tea, coffee, fruit juice - a typical Italian breakfast. This was replenished regularly. I noticed on some reviews they mentioned the staff were rude. I didn't find them rude, although we found that Italians in general (in shops, hotels etc) were not overly chatty which could be confused with seeming rude. Overall I would give this hotel 9.5/10 and think this would be a good choice for anyone.

Staff is impatient and curt. Location is difficult to find without help. Take a taxi if you can afford to. The room was very comfortable is a bit small. The rooms had obviously been recently updated and felt clean, comfortable and in good working condition. Close to transportation and in walking distance to major tourist destinations. Breakfast was mediocre. Good stay overall. Weak point was the lack of warmth, helpfulness and patience of the staff.

The hotel was clean and overall as advertised. I was proposed a room in the annex and got one in the main building after insisting a bit more. The room was on the 4th floor, with a balcony with a table and two chairs which allowed me to work outside with a pleasant view on the roof gardens around. The hotel location is what made me select it and it is really a good place if you want to explore the city walking. The staff at the reception was not very friendly but did their job OK. Overall, I would come back there.

The hotel location couldn't been better, few steps from Campo de'Fiori,Piazza Navona and Trastevere. The rooms were very clean. Most of the staff members were friendly and helpful. I know Rome quite well so was looking for less known itineraries and one of the staff members gave me excellent indications. The breakfast was alright. There were two problematic issues: first the shower, unmovable, attached to the ceiling and covered partly with limescale, so that water was pouring everywhere around but not where it should. The shower cabin was extremely tiny in size. The other problem was the terrible noise from the street starting at around 5 am.For someone who sleeps with closed window and air condition on this wouldn't be a problem.I prefer fresh air so it was a problem for me. But there were much more good than bad sides. There is a terrace with a lovely view of roofs and of the Sant'Andrea della Valle church dome. I would definitely recommend this hotel to my family and friends and would like to come back there. I traveled with my Mother and she also enjoyed it very much. It is indeed a good value for money.

Hotel area was noisy which wouldn't be a problem if the windows could be closed but since it wasn't" summer (although the temperature said otherwise)the windows had to remain open. The hotel has a perfect location for a tourist, we were able to see all the major sights of Rome in two days. We walked to many of the places yet there is a major bus stop one block away that can get you anywhere in minutes. The Campo square is full of wonderful places to eat at night and is only a couple blocks away. The room was not fancy at all but we did not go to Rome for a hotel but the sights. They arranged a cab to pick us up at the airport which worked perfectly given that the hotel could be hard to find. The staff were always very helpful and there directions were always easy to follow.

The rooms at the Smeraldo are small, but clean and efficient. It is not loaded with amenities (there are only 5 channels on the TV) but the staff were all pleasant and helpful. The free continental breakfast buffet was tasty if not imaginative. If you are going to Rome to stay in your hotel room then the Smeraldo is not for you. But if you are going to Rome to explore and want to be in the heart of the city-two blocks from Campo De Fiore, 5 minutes walk to the restaurant district, 10 minutes walk to all the ancient ruins (Pantheon, Colleseum, Forum) and 15 minutes to the Vatican -then book your room now! It is the best value for your money and I have already recommended it to my friends.

The location was great, the room and bathroom was always clean and minimum noise from the street, The staff was helpful, It was a little difficult at first finding the hotel. My wife likes to get an American style hotel near the airport our last night before we fly out and because the Smeraldo hotel was totally comfortable and with taxi services available round the clock there was no need to change hotels. Great location within a short walking distance of all the main sights. Small, clean room facing an inner courtyard. Nice rooftop deck. The main drawback for this property is the rude front desk staff. Every interaction I had with this staff was unpleasant. Additionally, when we checked in we were asked to give the hotel a 10 Euro deposit in cash on the room key, just in case we didn't return it. Perhaps I'm naive, but I've never had this happen before, especially when the hotel has my credit card information. Bottom line: Great location, adequate room, poor service. Regardless of the Rick Steve's recommendation, with so many other accommodation options in the Eternal City I'm staying somewhere else the next time I'm in Rome.

I enjoyed my stay at this hotel. Nestled on a quiet little street, it was so nice not to hear Vespa's throughout the night. It's located amidst the campo de fiori, piazza navona and the pantheon. There restaurants, and a Forno (bakery) around the corner from it with some ready made foods.

I requested a room on the top floor and #407 was excellent! Had a balcony and was a corner room right next to the terrace garden. Very quiet. Being female, 62 and traveling alone, I felt perfectly safe and comfortable here. Close to everything, buses 5 minutes away. I arrived at 10:30am and my room was ready! Plenty of closet space and hangers. Room size was just fine, as I was only there to sleep and get ready! It's not fancy, but excellent location. AC and heat worked perfect. I would come back and highly recommend this hotel.

This hotel is far too expensive. Its location is convenient and our room was clean and secure, but it was also cramped, the shower cabin inspired claustrophobia - despite the fact that the door didn't close - and the decor was kitsch. Breakfast was not included. All in all, these conditions would have been acceptable at half the price.

Hotel in excellent location. Walking slowly 10 minutes to Pantheon. 20 to Vatican, 25 to Coliseum. 5 minutes to Piazza de Fiori with good restaurants. Staff speaks English and helpful, internet available. Shower is 2x2 feet, gets floor wet. Good breakfast, same every day. Recommend because of location but it is not the size of a motel 6 room. Airport van cannot get you to front door because street is too narrow.

The staff, although professional, was dry. They should be more personal in dealing with their clients. Other than that, the hotel is well situated and very clean. The bathroom was spacious for what I've seen through out Europe. I would stay again but it wouldn't be my first choice. Always have breakfast at the restaurant on the corner in front of the hotel, the lady who owns it, although with a serious look, is a sweetheart and makes a really good coffee.

It is very small and simple by American standards. If you want a sparkling spacious luxury hotel where everyone kisses your ass, go to Las Vegas. If you want to experience Rome, stay at Smeraldo!

Great value, terrific central location. Very clean hotel. Many rooms refurbished. While bathrooms are small, they are nicely redone...beautiful tile and fixtures. Showers are tiny...hand held shower sprayers would be much more functional than wall/ceiling mounted shower heads. Hope they will change these. Overall, a great hotel for the price. No breakfast is included, but plenty of nice cafes nearby.

Ottima posizione in centro a Roma, albergo discreto non troppo moderno ma molto funzionale. La colazione non è compresa nel prezzo!

GREAT location! You can walk to everything. We took advantage of the pre-arranged ride to/from the airport, which made finding the hotel much easier. The room was small, but very clean with nice bathroom (although small shower). The staff was helpful. There are lots of great restaurants nearby. Close to Camp Dei Fiori, which also has many good restaurants that are more reasonably priced than nearby Piazza Navona. I would stay here again.

In my opinion: Good: 1. The hotel is well located. You can go walking to the main tourist attractions, which actually is very nice! (including coliseum, palatino, pantheon, etc). 2. The price is fair enough, taking into account its location and being in Rome, where hotels are expensive in general. Bad: 1. The room doesn't have enough space to accomodate confortably 2 people and luggages from an international trip, which are big in general. However, once you are on a 3-star hotel, you can not expect a "king size suite". 2. The hotel staff at reception didn't seem to be very receptive. I didn't feel encouraged in asking things to them, like tourist tips, buses to go to some place and etc. They usually gave me the impression of "leave me alone". Anyway, I have to say they were professional for their basic tasks, at least. In general, I would recommend this hotel, especially for those who would use this only to take a shower and to sleep at night.(In fact, who would spend a day inside a hotel room in Rome? ;-)) Young travelers or people with less requirement in terms of space are also indicated to this. I hope I have helped other tourists. Go to Rome! It is really a once in a lifetime experience. That is an open air museum.

The shower was tiny. You hardly had room to turn around and the curtain kept sticking to you. The water from the shower leaked all over the bathroom floor and we got silver fish. There were workmen digging up the road outside under our bedroom window. Plus there is a Traviata opposite where people gathered. It was very noisy particulary at the weekend late into the evening. Location was very good though (best atribute) and it was reasonably priced. Some reception staff weren't very helpful or indeed friendly. Some were though. It depended who was on duty.

The location is great. Very close to Campo de Fiore, Piazza Navona, Pantheon and about a 12 euro taxi ride from the Roma Termini if you use a metered taxi, make sure the taxi driver has a meter. The bathroom looked like it had just been remodeled. The hotel staff at the front desk all spoke English and were always there.

We stayed here on recommendation of a family member. The location was perfect for the price, and that's about it (and we thank our family member for that). The hairdryer and the TV didn't work in our room, 3/5 employees there were outright rude, and they charged us for breakfast even though the employee who welcomed us told us we would not be charged for breakfast...I even saw the reviews from others regarding breakfast, and that's why I asked the front desk guy when we checked in! No matter what they tell you, DON'T EAT THE BREAKFAST!! Not worth it. The location is perfect though, and it's the cheapest hotel in the area that was available with such short notice, so for that, it was worth it, but just don't expect the people at the desk to be nice at all. And if there are other places with similar prices in Campo De Fiori or Travestere areas, stay there instead.

Surly, unhelpful desk staff, tiny room with broken A/C, calls to front desk for help were useless. The bathroom was so small, you either needed to be a small child or contortionist to use the toilet. The best thing about this hotel was the phone call the front desk made to call a cab to go to another hotel. When we complained, we wre told there was nothing that could be done until the following morning when the manager was back. When we called to discuss with the manager, it was revealed he was on vacation the entire week. Unprofessional and unpleasant. Avoid at all costs!

This is actually a great place, and exactly as advertised, which is to say: tiny rooms, but very well-kept and modern (recently updated), adequate breakfast, very friendly and helpful staff, and above all, unbelievable location. Walking distance from Pantheon, Trastevere, Campo Fiori, Trevi Fontana, etc. Book early because it always fills up fast.

Location couldn't be better - just a few minutes walk from Piazza Navona, Campo dei Fiori, and everything. Very easy to get to the airport (take No. 8 tram to Trastevere station and then train). The room was small but clean and pleasant and looked like pretty recently refurbished. Too small to spend a lot of time in the room but fantastic if you want somewhere not too expensive right in the centre. Staff not overly-friendly, but efficient and polite. In short, a great option for people who want to go to Rome with the intention of spending most of their time sightseeing, but also want somewhere pleasant and comfortable to retreat to. And who want somewhere extremely central but not too expensive. Would definitely go back.

We stayed in Rome 3 nights and we had stayed here last year as well. We love the location and the updated with marble & granite clean rooms. Having a king size bed is great as well.

My adult granddaughter and I just returned from a l0 night stay at Smeraldo Hotel in Rome. We had a very nice though small room with a marble bath. The shower was very small I could not turn around in it. It was very clean. The location was perfect, a short walk to all the major sites. The staff was friendly and very helpful. I have been to Rome many times and would choose Smeraldo again and would definitely recommend it to anyone. jhp/usa.

Personale gentile. Consigliabile per muoversi a piedi. L'autobus dalla stazione può impiegare anche mezzora se c'è traffico. La metro più vicina (Barberini) è a 20 minuti a piedi.

I have stayed in this hotel several times over the years and always enjoyed it. The location couldn't be better. The price is always fair. I am always satisfied with my stay. My room this time was a bit too cramped, the bathroom very small, and the shower nearly impossible. The A/C didn't work, forcing us to leave the window open. We had trouble sleeping because of the noise. That said, I recommend this hotel.
