The hotel is very good, an excellent relation between quality vs price. The problems are: - The small space to take a shower, in the bathroom. The smallest I saw. - The staff in the Reception, always bad humored.

We stayed in the newly renovated annex around the corner. the room was good, but you did not feel like you were in a hotel. the room should have been a little less expensive than the main building. Great location!!! We were there 5 nights for pleasure and visiting our daughter who is studying in Rome.

Extremely hard to find, even for cab drivers. Other than that, great location for touring ancient Rome. Room was tiny, without a place to put 2 pieces of luggage. Best description is "quaint?"

The location is excelent; all sights are within walking distance. From Airport take a normal train 5,50 € to Trastevere and from there tram to Largo Argentina and walk two blocks to the hotel. Our stay was nice; the rooms are smallish, but very clean, beds had good matrasses and shower plenty of hot water. We didin't opt for breakfast,

The hotel is wonderfully located. Major attractions are within walking distance. Rooms were small but immaculate. Lobby area was very nice, and the staff had no problem finding our reservation. If you want a truly quiet room, ask for one that does not face the street. I would definitely return to this hotel.

Great location within a short walking distance of all the main sights. Small, clean room facing an inner courtyard. Nice rooftop deck. The main drawback for this property is the rude front desk staff. Every interaction I had with this staff was unpleasant. Additionally, when we checked in we were asked to give the hotel a 10 Euro deposit in cash on the room key, just in case we didn't return it. Perhaps I'm naive, but I've never had this happen before, especially when the hotel has my credit card information. Bottom line: Great location, adequate room, poor service. Regardless of the Rick Steve's recommendation, with so many other accommodation options in the Eternal City I'm staying somewhere else the next time I'm in Rome.

I enjoyed my stay at this hotel. Nestled on a quiet little street, it was so nice not to hear Vespa's throughout the night. It's located amidst the campo de fiori, piazza navona and the pantheon. There restaurants, and a Forno (bakery) around the corner from it with some ready made foods.

I requested a room on the top floor and #407 was excellent! Had a balcony and was a corner room right next to the terrace garden. Very quiet. Being female, 62 and traveling alone, I felt perfectly safe and comfortable here. Close to everything, buses 5 minutes away. I arrived at 10:30am and my room was ready! Plenty of closet space and hangers. Room size was just fine, as I was only there to sleep and get ready! It's not fancy, but excellent location. AC and heat worked perfect. I would come back and highly recommend this hotel.

This hotel is far too expensive. Its location is convenient and our room was clean and secure, but it was also cramped, the shower cabin inspired claustrophobia - despite the fact that the door didn't close - and the decor was kitsch. Breakfast was not included. All in all, these conditions would have been acceptable at half the price.

Front desk staff was helpful when we were two hours late to meet the arranged driver at the airport due to lost luggage. The location was great near Campo de Fiori and Piazza Navona, the room was clean, and the bathroom was modern. It isn't luxurious but met our needs for our one night's stay. Rooftop garden is a nice bonus.

Hotel in excellent location. Walking slowly 10 minutes to Pantheon. 20 to Vatican, 25 to Coliseum. 5 minutes to Piazza de Fiori with good restaurants. Staff speaks English and helpful, internet available. Shower is 2x2 feet, gets floor wet. Good breakfast, same every day. Recommend because of location but it is not the size of a motel 6 room. Airport van cannot get you to front door because street is too narrow.

The staff, although professional, was dry. They should be more personal in dealing with their clients. Other than that, the hotel is well situated and very clean. The bathroom was spacious for what I've seen through out Europe. I would stay again but it wouldn't be my first choice. Always have breakfast at the restaurant on the corner in front of the hotel, the lady who owns it, although with a serious look, is a sweetheart and makes a really good coffee.

The hotel could not have been in a better location! Room was clean, cleaned every day, plenty of hot water, good water pressure, good air conditioning. Location, location, location! Price was dirt cheap compared to all other hotels. Will definitely stay there again, and would recommend it again. Americans: This is not an American hotel. It is very small and simple by American standards. If you want a sparkling spacious luxury hotel where everyone kisses your ass, go to Las Vegas. If you want to experience Rome, stay at Smeraldo!

Great value, terrific central location. Very clean hotel. Many rooms refurbished. While bathrooms are small, they are nicely redone...beautiful tile and fixtures. Showers are tiny...hand held shower sprayers would be much more functional than wall/ceiling mounted shower heads. Hope they will change these. Overall, a great hotel for the price. No breakfast is included, but plenty of nice cafes nearby.

GREAT location! You can walk to everything. We took advantage of the pre-arranged ride to/from the airport, which made finding the hotel much easier. The room was small, but very clean with nice bathroom (although small shower). The staff was helpful. There are lots of great restaurants nearby. Close to Camp Dei Fiori, which also has many good restaurants that are more reasonably priced than nearby Piazza Navona. I would stay here again.

In my opinion: Good: 1. The hotel is well located. You can go walking to the main tourist attractions, which actually is very nice! (including coliseum, palatino, pantheon, etc). 2. The price is fair enough, taking into account its location and being in Rome, where hotels are expensive in general. Bad: 1. The room doesn't have enough space to accomodate confortably 2 people and luggages from an international trip, which are big in general. However, once you are on a 3-star hotel, you can not expect a "king size suite". 2. The hotel staff at reception didn't seem to be very receptive. I didn't feel encouraged in asking things to them, like tourist tips, buses to go to some place and etc. They usually gave me the impression of "leave me alone". Anyway, I have to say they were professional for their basic tasks, at least. In general, I would recommend this hotel, especially for those who would use this only to take a shower and to sleep at night.(In fact, who would spend a day inside a hotel room in Rome? ;-)) Young travelers or people with less requirement in terms of space are also indicated to this. I hope I have helped other tourists. Go to Rome! It is really a once in a lifetime experience. That is an open air museum.

The shower was tiny. You hardly had room to turn around and the curtain kept sticking to you. The water from the shower leaked all over the bathroom floor and we got silver fish. There were workmen digging up the road outside under our bedroom window. Plus there is a Traviata opposite where people gathered. It was very noisy particulary at the weekend late into the evening. Location was very good though (best atribute) and it was reasonably priced. Some reception staff weren't very helpful or indeed friendly. Some were though. It depended who was on duty.

The location is great. Very close to Campo de Fiore, Piazza Navona, Pantheon and about a 12 euro taxi ride from the Roma Termini if you use a metered taxi, make sure the taxi driver has a meter. The bathroom looked like it had just been remodeled. The hotel staff at the front desk all spoke English and were always there.

We stayed here on recommendation of a family member. The location was perfect for the price, and that's about it (and we thank our family member for that). The hairdryer and the TV didn't work in our room, 3/5 employees there were outright rude, and they charged us for breakfast even though the employee who welcomed us told us we would not be charged for breakfast...I even saw the reviews from others regarding breakfast, and that's why I asked the front desk guy when we checked in! No matter what they tell you, DON'T EAT THE BREAKFAST!! Not worth it. The location is perfect though, and it's the cheapest hotel in the area that was available with such short notice, so for that, it was worth it, but just don't expect the people at the desk to be nice at all. And if there are other places with similar prices in Campo De Fiori or Travestere areas, stay there instead.

Surly, unhelpful desk staff, tiny room with broken A/C, calls to front desk for help were useless. The bathroom was so small, you either needed to be a small child or contortionist to use the toilet. The best thing about this hotel was the phone call the front desk made to call a cab to go to another hotel. When we complained, we wre told there was nothing that could be done until the following morning when the manager was back. When we called to discuss with the manager, it was revealed he was on vacation the entire week. Unprofessional and unpleasant. Avoid at all costs!

Location couldn't be better - just a few minutes walk from Piazza Navona, Campo dei Fiori, and everything. Very easy to get to the airport (take No. 8 tram to Trastevere station and then train). The room was small but clean and pleasant and looked like pretty recently refurbished. Too small to spend a lot of time in the room but fantastic if you want somewhere not too expensive right in the centre. Staff not overly-friendly, but efficient and polite. In short, a great option for people who want to go to Rome with the intention of spending most of their time sightseeing, but also want somewhere pleasant and comfortable to retreat to. And who want somewhere extremely central but not too expensive. Would definitely go back.

My adult granddaughter and I just returned from a l0 night stay at Smeraldo Hotel in Rome. We had a very nice though small room with a marble bath. Personale gentile. Consigliabile per muoversi a piedi. L'autobus dalla stazione può impiegare anche mezzora se c'è traffico. La metro più vicina (Barberini) è a 20 minuti a piedi.

I have stayed in this hotel several times over the years and always enjoyed it. The location couldn't be better. The price is always fair. I am always satisfied with my stay. My room this time was a bit too cramped, the bathroom very small, and the shower nearly impossible. The A/C didn't work, forcing us to leave the window open. We had trouble sleeping because of the noise. That said, I recommend this hotel.

We booked for 2 nights on arrival in Rome and also 2 nights before leaving Rome. The first night, there was no hot water. The second night there was no water at all. After asking at front desk, they said there was a water leak and they had to turn off water to hotel. They never informed us and did not even apologize or offer any compensation. On our second booking, we had water, but light bulb in bathroom was out and after complaining, they never fixed it. The staff (all four we met) were the rudest and least helpful of any of the six hotels we stayed at in Italy. We asked for directions to Roman sites and they just pointed to the map and said the hotel is marked, but never offered directions or any help. I definitely would NOT stay at this hotel again. Location was great, but rude, arrogant staff was almost intolerable. Not a great value for the money.

This is fine but they switched us from the hotel smeraldo to their lodging across the street which seemed more sparse. Pluses - they gave us a three bed room when only two were needed, location very active good area, minuses - they switched to a lower start loding (as opposed to hotel) as said that was consistent with venere rates! They charge for breakfast and itnernet. Overall - rome is expensive this is a faird deal, dislike the bait and switch aspect.

My husband and I have stayed here every time we come to Rome because we like the location being close to Campo de Fiori and not far from Piazza Navonna. They arrange for a service to pick you up from the airport and take you back for a resonable fee. The rooms are very small but we don't mind for a few nights. The breakfast was like most Italian hotels being good for a 3 star hotel. They have an elevator that is up just one flight and only fits your bags and one person. But I believe elevators are rare in Italy and a luxury in a smaller hotel. There is a bank, plenty of restaurants and a market about a block from each other. I like this hotel.

We stayed at Smeraldo for one week. The location of the hotel is perfect in walking distance from the main attractions and in a cosy neighbourhood with shops and good restaurants. We had 2 rooms one for 2 under the roofs which was nice, quiete but which lacked a heater in the bath room. The second room was for 3 persons al with indivual beds. It was nice and quiete too but lacked a bit of light. We were in Roma to visit so we spent little time in the rooms. The most inconvenience was the lack of heating system in the bathroom of room 409. Over all a nice place to stay, close to Campo Fiori, piazza Navonna, walking distance to Fontana de Trevi and easy access to buses to visit Roma. Nice restaurants accross the street and around abound.

I also tried to call the hotel for a better price, but venere was cheaper; the hotel staff tries to stick you with a 10 euro breakfast--better to get that outside. I must say that the cleaning people were very kind and welcoming, but the desk clerks were just the opposite: taciturn, quick-tempered, and not particularly helpful. But we did get one of the largest rooms, which was clean if spartan. and the location is very good, especially for the price.

We are visiting Rome recently five times a year. We have never been so uncomfortable in a hotel. That the room was rediculously small was not the worst, but when we announced that we would want to leave after the first night, listening to the toilet deposits of other guest passing over our heads in a barely insulated plastic pipe, the staff intimidated us, saying we would have to pay anyway all nights reserved and that leaving was not an option. The asked us to buy a 10 EUR Internet access card, (the 5 EUR ones were out) and try to cancel the already started stay at Venere.com. That of cause did not work, but despite the concern that we would have to continue to pay the rest of the nights, we left anyway for an other hotel nearby because we just felt unsafe in the place. The day staff was a bit more correct, but overall, a picture book rip off joint. You get what you pay for, I guess.

While the service at Hotel Smeraldo was lacking, this hotel does have an excellent location for a reasonable price. The rooms are fine (although the showers are a bit claustrophobic), and we really appreciated easy access to excellent restaurants and landmarks. This is within easy (5-10min) walking distance of Campo d'Fiori and Piazza Navona, and we walked almost every day to Vatican City (only about 15min). There are many excellent cafes on the same block and plenty of shopping as well. All in all, the front desk was neither helpful or welcoming, though, and seemed extremely put-out over small items such as asking for an extra pillow (which we never got). We had been hoping to be treated somewhat better on our honeymoon.

The location of Smeraldo is excellent. The housekeeping staff did a wonderful job. The showers should have water saver shower heads to help control the amount of water in a tiny shower. This hotel has a great location, near both Campo di Fiore and Piazza Navona. But good luck finding it. We wandered for 20 minutes in the vicinity before we stumbled on it. The problem is that the lane it's on is too small to be on some maps. Ask the hotel for specific directions. Once you find it, the area around the hotel is quite charming. The room was comfortable (the AC worked) but dull and small (although we've had smaller in Europe). The bathroom was the best feature: well-designed, attractive, large. Overall, this hotel is a good option if you're looking for an affordable place in a great location.

After seeing this hotel positively reviewed in several guidebooks (Rough Guide, Rick Steeves, and more) and on tripadvisor I decided to book here for my 1st trip to Rome. My experience was extremely positive and would book there again without a doubt. The location was superb, the hotel was sparkling clean, the a/c worked well, the rooms were quiet and and the washroom was newly redone. My room was one one of few that had a balcony so that was a nice touch. Make no mistake: the Smeraldo is not a 5 star luxury hotel, but for the price it is was much more than I expected. The rooms were very spartan but I didn't expect much either. As I stayed in August the rates were much lower than in high season. Booking through venere.com was also cheaper than booking directly through the hotel. Rome was such a memorable experience and I expect to visit again soon. Thank you staff at Hotel Smeraldo.

Finding the property proved problematic. but location and accommodation as well as service was very good. Coffee making facilities in the room would be a welcome addition. Otherwise hard to fault.

Unfortunately, Rome during July-August 2008 had a heat wave. Our experience staying at the hotel combined with the weather did not help, to make our stay pleasant and comfortable. The employees were not friendly and helpful. They barely spoke to us. The services/facilities indicated on the Venere.com website about the hotel was inaccurate. The bar located in the hotel was not open, you need to bring your own computer to access the internet, and even the (low)three star rating was misleading.

Mixed experience. Nice facility, clean and well-maintained. Superb location, near-perfect location in the heart of old Rome. Staff was polite but cold, completely unwilling/unable to give even the simplest tourist advice (like where to catch a local bus). Cleaning staff was, on the contrary, very nice and professional. Roof garden is disappointing and closes at 8 pm, which eliminates the sunset views that are the point of a roof garden. Location, price and cleanliness make it a good choice, though.
