The front desk staff not very friendly or helpful. The main person we dealt with during the day was never friendly or very helpful. Bedspreads thin and old and frayed and seemed dirty. Room shabby. What a disappointment. We stayed at less expensive places all over Italy and this was poorest quality. Wireless also never worked.

Excellent service. Delicious breakfast. Great restaurant tips from the reception desk. Try the Trattoria Da Augusto in the little piazza to the left of the main gate.

We enjoyed staying here for Christmas week. It was an island of tranquility in Trastevere. It is surrounded by many restaurants of all kinds. The staff was professional and friendly.

The Hotel Santa Maria was an oasis for us on our first trip to Rome. The staff couldn't have been nicer and from the start made our trip to Rome special. We can't wait to go back and have already spread the word to all our friends.

Room was fine, breakfast was a bit limited but OK and location was good if you want to be on that side of Rome. A good, small hotel with the kind of services and facilities one would expect.

Excellent hotel for visiting old Rome! Everything is in walking distance. A secluded spot, quiet and peaceful. We got a very warm welcome, with thourough explanations of how and where to walk and get around in the city. Everyone was very helpful and service-minded. We recommend this hotel to every tourist visiting Rome!

Nice quite location with great view which would have been better if we were able to rent a room with a balcony (not available when we were there). A few minor suggestions...a coffee pot in the breakfast room and a few hooks for hanging clothing. Otherwise, very friendly and helpful owners. The restaurant they suggested for dinner, Le Acart was fantastic.

We stayed in Rome four days. The Hotel Santa Maria was the perfect lodging for us. Trastevere has lots of good resturants within walking distance. We were also able to walk to the Vatican and all other sites. We loved the quiet atmosphere of Hotel Santa Maria. The courtyard is lovely, the breakfast room welcoming and the rooms very clean and comfortable.

As we were also there on business, we left the hotel to stay at the Cavilieri Hilton. There was no comparison. While the views at the Cavilieri Hilton were great, we would much rather have been at the Hotel Santa Maria. For the price and location, it can't be beat.

We are based in Bangalore, India. My wife , my son who is 21 and I decided to visit Rome on a holiday. This was to be a gift to our son who will be graduating from college soon. We booked for our stay at Hotel Santa Maria based on the reviews we had seen in Trip Advisor. The reality far exceeded our expectations. We were given clear directions on how to get to the hotel from the railway station and were welcomed with great warmth by Ms Arianna. From then on she helped us plan and execute our stay in Rome. She did everything possible to make our stay comfortable. The location is very nice and is very well connected by bus, tram facilities. There is also a cab rank close by. Plenty of choices in terms of restaurants. The breakfast spread was sumptuous . Free Internet access a very welcome added plus. All in a all, a wonderful introduction to Italy to my son. Thank you, Ms Arianna, for making this a memorable holiday for us. We highly recommend a stay at the Santa Maria Hotelwhen you plan to visit Rome. We will be happy to share more of our experiences with others who wish to know more about this welcoming place which is so much more than a hotel. M Chandrasekaran.

Santa Maria made our first few nights in Italy very pleasant. Hidden away (okay, we took the bus from the train station & wandered a bit before discovering the gate)in the midst of trendy Trastevere neighborhood where we enjoyed eating, shopping and exploring. Comfortable, wonderful breakfast, quiet and beautiful courtyard...My 24 year old daughter & I would come back & stay again! Thank you.

We liked the hotel enormously. The layout round two courtyards is very attractive. A number of features retained from the original monastery setting add character. All the members of staff were most helpful and friendly. The location is perfect - charming narrow cobbled streets with lots of restaurants in the vicinity, and within walking distance of all the principal attractions.

This was my second stay at Hotel Santa Maria and I will probably stay there each time I return to Rome. The location in Trastevere is quiet (almost an oasis), the rooms are comfortable and very clean, the service is excellent, and the breakfast is very good. Unfortunately, taxi drivers will only drop you off at the Piazza Santa Maria, so you have to walk about a block with your suitcases, but the hotel can arrange for a taxi to come directly to the hotel if you want to go to the airport.

Santa Maria was our last night in Rome. A family of 4, we appreciated the quiet, comfortable private accomodations. We knew from the literature, Santa Maria had been renovated, perhaps created, just a few years ago. Our room with 2 single beds below, and a king size above was perfect. Thanks to the friendly night desk staff, they suggested & directed us to a splendid restaurant to top off our week in Italy. In the morning, while we savored the ample breakfast spread in peacefull surroundings, the staff quickly arranged for our door to door transfer to the airport. As we drove away, the bells of nearby Santa Maria Tresteve announced the time, and chimed a promise, we shall return. Grazie

This hotel could enter in a "charm" category. Verry good. Just a pitty that it was still some work in progress. This removed a lot to the perfection.

Two gravel courtyards with small orange trees, tables & chairs surrounded by single storey accommodation (quite different but some similarities to a motel). No great views but an unusual & unexpected haven of tranquillity for Rome. We enjoyed a relaxing drink in this private & peaceful courtyard. Understand that in summer breakfast is served in the courtyard. NB Room 1 is an exception & located off the courtyards. In due course this MAY provide a an exclusive spot but it is not recommended as of March 2003 because the patio is still under construction. We were allocated this room & complained that the web site stated that rooms overlooked the courtyard. We were given another but for a double it was quite small. There are larger rooms but they were all booked. Although located on the fringe of the city Rome is compact & we were able to reach all the tourist spots easily by walking or bus/trams which seemed more efficient than taxis. Trastevere is a great spot with lots of character & many restaurants. We took the train(10/15 minute frequency) from Fiumicino airport to Trastevere station followed by taxi to the hotel. Ensure you have the hotel address as our taxi driver didn't know the hotel by name. Staff polite & helpful & atmosphere excellent. We would use this unique Roman hotel again. Oh yes, the Santa Maria church (just around the corner in the Piazza) chimes were the only thing that intruded on the hotel's quiteness. My wife thought it added to the character & we soon got used to them.

The staff were friendly and extremely helpful. They arranged a restaurant reservation for us, airport transport when we left, and they kept our luggage for 3 days when we took a side-trip (no charge!). The breakfast is delicious, breakfast room is charming, and the courtyard setting is very romantic. The location is quite convenient to sights and public transportation. There's a laundromat just a few steps from the hotel's front gate. We wouldn't hesitate to stay here again.

I love this hotel. The rooms were large, immaculate, nicely decorated and off a beautiful courtyard. They have done a remarkable job with the refurbishment. The location is great if you want to make your home in the centro storico. Trastervere is home to a million great restaurants and just across the river from a million more. The hotel staff were excellent. They arranged for a limo to pick my parents up the following day from FCO. I booked my parents into the hotel for their last night in Rome and really liked it. The only part of our stay that was unfortunate was the screaming children in the room next to ours. The courtyard setting was made less tranquil by two cranky underage travellers. I would definitely stay at the Hotel Santa Maria again and have recommended it to others.
