Fabulous location- never used a taxi with metro nearby and felt safe in spite of dense crowds nearby at Spanish steps. Entire staff attentive, knowledgeable, and friendly. My single room had a balcony opening on a courtyard. Quality and value surprised me!

This hotel is a real find. The location is excellent. The rooms are spotless and spacious. The front desk staff is extremely helpful and obliging (happy to provide transport info, make restaurant reservations, call to get information on local events). We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would definitely recommend this hotel.

The staff was wonderful and made us feel right at home. They were all very helpful. The hotel rooms were very nice. The only comment we would make is to propose that the hotel vary the breakfast offering a bit (offer different types of pastries and different types of cereals).

I came with low expectation for small rooms, bad service and high price. And I was totally surprised. I've ordered a single room, but for the first days they had a double room available and I stayed there, which was great. The single room was worse, but still above my expectations, though small, but cozy and nice. Both rooms are new and clean, so really enjoyed them. The location of the hotel is great, I enjoyed it a lot. The stuff was very nice, speaking good english and very useful with any my request. Breakfast - so-so. The yogurts were good, all the rest I believe can be better, but I'm spoiled. Anyway - next time I would stay there again. As I said - it was much above my expectations.

When I arrived to hotel San Carlo and saw the room I did not like it very much at first as it was small but I had a single room and planned to be in the city all day. During my stay, everybody was so nice to me and I had very good and safe feeling in the room, in the end I did not mind the size! The room was basic, clean. Hotel is very close to subway and Piazza di Spagna, many cute restaurants around, nice shops and with a map one can basically walk anywhere. My stay in Rome was perfect, loved it very much as well as the hotel. It is very good value!

The front desk staff were very helpful and friendly. The location is excellent. Very close to Piazza di Spagna and shopping on Via dei Corso. Many of the other sights are also within walking distance such as the Pantheon, Fontana di Trevi, Piazza Navona, Piazza del Popolo. The single room and bathroom were quite tiny but very clean. My room was in the new annex, so it was in excellent condition.

Nice breakfast with good coffee. Rosanne at the hotel was very nice and helpful. Try pizza at Da Bafutta near Piazza Navona. Great time!

Location cannot be bettered. A very short walk to the Spanish Steps, and therefore surrounded by lots of restaurants - a closer look at them can easily sort out the tourist traps (many) from the good to better (also many). All key tourist sites are within walking distance - reason enough to stay here. The front desk staff are all fabulous - very helpful, knowledgeable and willing. Rooms are small. We paid extra for the terrace, which was wonderful. With 3 kids, it provided a valuable extra space, and plenty of room for the whole family to spread out and chill. Otherwise the rooms are small and crowded - we probably would not go back without a terrace. Breakfast is the disappointment (this was our 5th hotel for the month, and it was way behind all the others in this respect). There is a lot of it, but no thought has gone into what is on offer. Two juices - both orange! Only 2 cereals - if one has to be cheap cornflakes, why not have a a healthy alternative such as muesli as the other - instead of another bland choice similar to cornflakes? There would be 5 or 6 choices of cake - why not 2, and offer some danishes as well? There must be 8 different conservatives / jams! How about 4 - and spending money on some other things? It is as though the plan is to make people think a lot of food is on offer, but then to discourage them from eating very much. Sorry; but I just do not understand - and while this hotel might be cheap for Rome, it is still expensive on the absolute scale.

Friends had stayed at this hotel and recommended it to us. it had a wonderful location very near the Spanish steps and we walked or took the metro to all points of interest. It was clean but the room was small and the lobby and breakfast area were cramped. there was a nice big terrace on our floor and you could choose to eat there but it was not convenient and was warm. Rome is expensive to visit and we felt this place was a good value and will reccomend it ourselves.

Positive aspects are definitely location of the place (in the center and close to underground station), quietness of rooms and a good cleaning of rooms. Negative aspects are the size of the rooms, a very poor breakfast and price/quality ratio but it seems a lot of hotels are the same in Roma. We were there for visiting so it is not important but the channels availability on TV is also poor. I recommend the hotel because the advantages listed are significant when visiting Roma.

This hotel is located in a wonderful area - just a few steps to the Spanish Steps and public transport. My single room was very small and the bathroom was so small I could barely turn around. The street is quiet but is in between two major roads. The street is also lined with lovely restaurants although most are quite expensive. Overall it was a good stay.

This is a perfectly located hotel within walking distance of many major sites (spanish steps, pantheon, etc.). We stayed in the quadraple room as we had 2 adults and 2 kids. They only have 1 of these rooms, but it was a bargain. There is a double bed downstairs and a loft w/2 twin beds above. There is alos a private balcony which was very nice. While many reports indiate they have no elevator, they now have one, however, it was not working on 1 day of our stay and its VERY SMALL. The breakfast area is also very small and particularly on a weekend day was very crowded. While this is certainly not a luxury hotel, its a great price and room for a family and we would definitely stay here again. We could find no other rooms to hold 4 people. The location is simply unbeatable.

We stayed in a "terraza" room which was very romantic. It ´s nice for young people because to go up you will have a difficult stair. The hotel location is great because you can walk around to many tourist places in some minutes. Around the hotel you can also find very good places to eat. Ask the staff for some advices about restaurants. The recepcionist was very lovely and sugested us excenllent restaurants just around the hotel.

This hotel is a little hidden gem. One street over from Via Condotti and right in the middle between the Spanish Steps and Via del Corso, all together now "shopping central". We were happy to see the hotel had installed a small glass elevator to get us to our 4th floor room # 79. The room a double-superior was superb, newly renovated, powerful a/c, high ceilings, very spacious bathroom, large closets and a very pretty small flowered terrace, just perfect for sipping some chilled local vino before heading out for supper at the nearby Gusto; good food but uninterested and haphazard service. The front desk staff even arranged for a 8 AM taxi pick-up for our flight home. This gave us time to have breakfast; yogurt, breads and croissants, cheese, the usual…I had read past reviews mentioning the small breakfast room, but I am happy to report that with the recent renovations undertaken, they now have 2 rooms and a few tables off the reception desk. The hotel does not have that modern boutique vibe, but Hotel San Carlo is a small scale classy hotel, it is quiet, clean, central and offers excellent value in a very expensive city. It will appeal to families with small and teenage children, couples young and old, as witnessed by the variety of guests from North America, Europe and Asia we encountered.

We were taken to an annexe round the corner, with lift. Rooms were a good size, by no means luxuriously fitted out but quite clean and with all expected facilities for this class of hotel. Breakfast is a little basic, taken in 2 or 3 small rooms, but staff tried hard to be helpful. Th major asset is the location; the Spanish steps, Trevi fountain, Pantheon and luxury shops are all in walking distance and the Metro runs from the nearby Piazza di Spagna stop to both the Colosseum and the Vatican. In the narrow streets, the taxi might not quite reach the hotel entrance, but the area is full of character with a good choice of small restaurants and bars.

We stayed in Rome for 6 days. Our hotel was the San Carlo. It is ideally located near the Spanish Steps, very convenient for shopping, sightseeing and adjacent to the Metro. The hotel was excellent with a very efficient and friendly staff. The hotel has recently installed an elevator. We are glad we didn't have to climb up to the fourth floor several times a day! On our first night we were in a small room but following a request we were given a much bigger room with a lovely terrace. We enjoyed our stay and will be recommending the San Carlo to friends.

This was my third trip to Rome and first time to stay at the San Carlo. I can easily recommend this hotel for value, cleanliness and especially for its location. Most of Romes' main tourist sites are within easy walking distance and it is also right in the centre of the upmarket shopping area of Via Condotti. The few downsides: The breakfast area is cramped and sometimes crowded, so may have to hang around a bit for a table (however, the selection on offer for breakfast is very good and the coffee is excellent); as mentioned in other reviews - the lack of a lift might be a drawback for some but I think one was being installed during our stay, so that would add another A+ to this great little hotel.

We were recently staying in this hotel--for full 6 nights. I chose this hotel after reading numerous reviews--we wanted to stay in historic area, close to spectacular Spanish Steps, and we did so!!! English speaking staff, real warm welcome, great selection for breakfast, provided shuttle service, tons of maps, newspapers, clean rooms with all necessary amenities, safe in-room or you can use safe of management. We got room # 79 on the 4th floor--so we got our own private terrace with great set of nice table and 2 comfortable arm-chairs. Unfortunately we didn't ask the name of a woman who works in the evenings (shame on us), but she was terrific!!!! --she was sooooo helpful in any tiny question, request!!!! she was very respectful, very warm and funny. We knew that she makes everything possible that we could be satisfied. We plan to send Thank you card to the all staff of the Hotel. Only one note---yes, it's no elevator in the hotel. But walking everywhere around Rome, going up and down numerous ancient streets or marble stairs, another 80 stairs up to our 4th floor were not a big deal at all -;)) We definitely recommend this hotel by its quality, cleaness, service, staff, breakfast, location!!!!!!! We already shared our compliments about the hotel with several our friends who plan Italian trip.

Proximity to the metro and ease of location is excellent. We found the room comfortable and the staff very helpful. We had a short wait for a table each time we appeared for breakfast. Staff could manage this better by recognising that you are waiting and possibly offering a coffee at the bar in the interim period.

I had requested early check in - I did not get it. I requested/ begged for 2 single beds for a friend and I - I did not get it. I got a 30" bed against a wall and it was as hard as a rock. Room 22 looked like a closet that had been converted to a hotel room. I could sit on the toilet and lean forward slightly and put my head against the wall on the opposite side of the room. For 130 E a night, this room was a complete rip off. The man at the front desk was rude and denied everything I asked him for my entire stay. I requested a first floor room due to my arthritis and had to go up 3 flights of stairs one way. I was told that was the only room in the hotel. There is no elevator in the hotel building. When my friend arrived on the 2nd day, they sent her to another hotel. Hotel San Carlo quoted her a rate of 100 Euros for the alternate hotel but when she got to the other hotel, they wanted 120 Euros as "she was not their guest". I asked for directions to the Hop On Hop Off Green tour bus and was sent to Augusta Plaza. That pick up location has been closed for years but San Carlo did not know that so I stood there for an hour waiting. I had to walk another 15 minutes to finally get to a current pick up point. Never go to this hotel unless you are with a man as single females are treated like dirt and given the worst room in the hotel.

Our stay was very nice. The staff was friendly and most accomodating. We needed train schedules and added an extra night with friendly help. Our room was on the very top floor (room 43) I think. Great rooftop terrace. The drawbacks to this hotel is that there is no elevator and the taxi had to drop us off a 2 blocks away. However, the bellman gladly retrieved luggage from the corner and placed it in our room. Poor guy had to climb 7 flights of stairs. But they were most accomodating. I would definitely stay at San Carlo again. The location for Spanish Steps, Metro trains, Trevi fountain, retaurants and shopping were great.

We (me and two friends) spent two nites at the San Carlos. The first nite, we were put way up on the top floor. The room was nice, but the climb outrages. They promised that we could have the same room arrangement for the 2nd nite, but on the 1st floor. They did not keep that promise. We were put on the 2nd floor in a much smaller, but nice room. Great Great Great hotel! The location really couldn't be better, the staff could not be friendlier or more helpful and the rooms/beds more comfortable. They obviously put a lot of money into a restoration a few years ago and the hotel is now completely modern and comfortable. The only issue I had was the lack of an elevator. We were on the fourth floor so there was a lot of climbing everyday. The bellman will carry your bags for you, so that's not a problem, but it does get kind of annoying to climb four flights of stairs. If I was back again, I'd ask for a room on a lower floor. Other than that, the hotel is fantastic. The concierge, particularly Rosanna and Victoria was friendly and helpful. They recommended restaurants for us all over the city, in any price range or type of food. They booked us tours and opera tickets, called us cabs at a moment's notice and easily accomodated our request to stay an extra few days. For the price and the location, you won't find a better deal.

We highly recommend this hotel. The good news is that a lift is being installed. The bad news is that it will probably result in the room rates going up. When the lift is installed this should be rated as a four star hotel. The staff was very accommodating. The staff takes your luggage to your rooms. Located in a safe location near the Spanish Steps. If you are a walker you can get to almost every cite without the need for a cab. Great restaurants nearby. Ask at the desk for restaurant recommendations. But as they say you can not get a bad meal it Italy---Ciao

We were a group of six women in our late thirties on a civilised hen weekend. The hotel was absolutely perfect for us - great position near the designer shopping of Via Condotti, quiet, clean and very nicely decorated. We had a triple, and a quadruple room which was perfect for sharing between friends or for a family. The best bit was a lovely terrace with nice patio furniture. The fridge in the room permitted chilled prosecco on the terrace! The decor and linen was very good quality for the room price, and the staff were great. The lady owner even let us use her computer to check in for our flights. The only slight disappointment was the breakfast. Alongside plain rolls and croissants were a selection of pre-wrapped and rather plastic cakes and biscuits. Some fresh fruit or something a little healthier might have been nice. But otherwise, a great value destination.

The location was great -- a block from the Spanish Steps. I did, however, think 90 Euro was a bit steep seeing as the room was miniscule. You also need a BMI of a super model in order to feel comfortable in the shower and the bathroom in general as it was VERY small. The staff were nice, no elevator but they did carry my bags upstars for me.

We asked for quiet rooms 2 o 3 months before our stay, but the actual rooms given to us were noisy. The stairs are loud, you hear every step in your room. The sound insolation of the windows was not woeking properly. There were rooms to the back side, bit they were not given to us, though we asked for them when we booked.

The only good thing this hotel has going for it is its central location. Otherwise, it's really not worth the money. The concierge with the blonde hair was less than friendly. When asked for a restaurant recommendation, she promptly sent us to the biggest tourist trap in the neighborhood. The rooms are tiny. The breakfast was mediocre.

This hotel is excellent, great staff (always ready to answer any questions) 2 blocks from the Spanish Steps and major Fashion Houses. The only thing is the hotel doesn't have an elevator in the main facility, but the sister property does have one and they suggest it. The hotel is still great. I highly recommended to anyone.

We have been very pleased with our stay at this hotel. The service was good and the breakfast exellent compared to the general italian breakfast. We wil definately come back to this hotel at our next stay in Rome! We ate at a nice restaurant nearby called "Gusto" Both pizzas and meals from their osteria is very reccomendable and our meals here was some of our best meals that we had in Italy!

My wife and I traveled to Rome for the 1st time early this month and took our teenage grandaughters. We had read comments on your web page concerning the hotel and decided to stay there the 5 nights we were planning to be in Rome. We had never traveled to Europe and had heard stories about cramped quarters, unclean facilities, rude hosts, etc and our experience here was anything but that. The staff at the hotel were over the top gratuious including the husband and wife team (manager and/or owners). Rosanna was the person we went to with question and she spoke fluent English and she was great! Our room (#77) has a roomy downstairs with a very comfortable double (queen maybe?)and a loft with 2 twins along with separate air conditioner and TV. It was great! By Europern standards, it was a very spacious room. The location of the hotel could not have been better. In the morning form 7-10, complimentary continental breakfast is served by 2-3 attentive, qualified staff members. (Cereals, coffee, juice, pastries, etc) Please be advised that the hotel had 4 levels and, like many in Rome, did not have an elevator. However, there is staff there and ready to assist so that is not an issue. We were a 3-5 minute walk from the Spanish Steps and I would liken the area to that of 5th Ave/upper east side in New York. Great restaurants all over (we never made 1 reservation and normally sat down immediately) and the prices were very reasonable. Shopping around us consisted of virtually all major fashion designer stores (you name it, not that we shopped there) but that is an indication of the quality of the area and demographics. There were also many other types of shops as well including drug stores, Italian convenient stores, etc. Most all of the major tourist sites (Vatican, Collusium, etc) were all walking distance or both taxi and their subway system was a short walk away. From these comments we would obviously recommend Hotel San Carlo as a great place to stay in Rom

Four of us shared the quad room, with its own rooftop deck. Staff welcomed us by name (our first visit to this hotel!). Room was very clean and comfortable. Great location 2 blocks from Spanish Steps. Even though no stairs, info given ptior to booking, and bags magically taken to and fron our room for us. Breakfast room small, but above average fare for the usual Italian breakfast. Staff arranged transportation to airport for us. Special thanks to Victoria at the desk. Would stay here again.

The rooms are tiny and the bathroom a joke. The wall are so thin you have the feeling there's somebody at your room during the night. The only positive point is the location, which is quite nice indeed. For the same price, I would look for something else.

This hotel is very nice situated in the center of rome very close to the spanish steps, therefore you are in reach of all the good and exiting places in rome; i mean you can walk to many of them! The hotel is friendly and clean; the employees is well educated and open; and very serviceable. But the morning breakfast could be better ! and the coffee is not that good, well you can shop around and find maybe some of the best restaurants in the world so its not that important, prices is very high in this area of Rome. I went to Rome alone and enjoy it,although i found the room there a little to small, but i will do it again and stay there for some days and enjoy life at this little clean hotel.

Great location within walking distance of underground, sophisticated shopping district, Spanish Steps, Trevi Fountain etc. We asked for room no. 77 as we read on the web that this was a suitable room for family with two children and it is indeed. Very quiet, even a patio. The only problem is hanging out the coats, especially when wet. No possibility and the closet is too low for long coats (don't want to hang them in there if they are wet anyway). Ladies at reception very very friendly and very very helpful giving information and calling to restaurants. Special price for taxi to airport, so don't take underground and train. For us (4 persons) it was only 5 Euro more to take a taxi. If you want to stay in the middle of the old centre for not too high a price and don't ask for many facilities this hotel is highly recommendable. H. Elzas (Holland)

Our room at the Bolivar wasn't exactly as we had anticipated it based on the photographs- we thought we were getting a room with a sitting area, but when we checked in we were told that the sitting area came only with a 4-person room, which is not how it was presented online. The balcony was unremarkable and the breakfast was mostly prepackaged items like muffins and cookies, definitely not the best I had while in Italy. The coffee was fabulous, though. The staff was courteous enough. The stairs were not a pleasure to look forward to at the end of a long day, however. We were on the fourth floor and had to walk up to our room, which was not what we wanted to do after walking around Rome all day. The location is great, though- right in the middle of shopping and close to the Spanish Steps.

I have never encountered such a gracious and helpful staff. The location is absolutely excellent. If you cannot do steps, however, this place is not for you. We were on the fourth floor--but it was great exercise. Rooms were very clean and well-kept. We had booked a room with two twin beds since we were two single men. While they could have separated the two twins that make up the one large bed, they graciously gave us a suite with two bedrooms for the same price. They went way out of their way to accomodate us. Location--get off the metro at "Spagna", walk out of the subway and straight ahead about 1.5 blocks is the hotel. Can't get better than that. Everything is in walking distance. I would stay there again in a heartbeat!

A good little hotel, but with certain major drawbacks. It is well located, in the midst of the premier shopping area of the city - very atmospheric little streets with pavement cafes etc. But it is almost impossible to get a taxi to negotiate the one-way system to find the hotel. Instead, you are invariably forced to get out near the spanish Steps and carry your luggage about 3 blocks. Similarly, when ordering a taxi it arrives with the meter already sprinting, so the smallest ride costs a fortune. The room was good, if small and spartan - I'd asked for a triple, and got a 2 room suite, which was very welcome. The staff were a mixed bag, mostly helpful and friendly, but managed to lose our laundry for 48 hours and only persistent enquiries by us got it returned. The biggest drawback in the hotel comes at breakfast time. Some 50 or more guests try to eat in a tiny space with only nine small tables. People are forced to hop around waiting for someone to finish up, which is displeasing to everyone. Actually, it is probably better to give up because the breakfast itself is poor - all sweet, even the croissants. Nevertheless, the San Carlo is good value for money, well-positioned, and I might well choose it again.

We just stayed at the Hotel San Carlo Sept. 30 through Oct. 3, 2005. All reviews are right on the money. The hotel is charming, the location really could not be better. There is a metro stop close by, walking to Spanish Steps, Trevi, the park, everywhere is great! Shops, restaurants, everything right there. Beautiful! Even though we had to walk up several flights as we had the quad room (very spacious with balcony), we did not have to carry our 8 plus bags!!! The exercise was good for us after all the good food and wine.

Had a single roome -- expected it to be tiny and it was -- but that was ok because I selected the hotel on its excellent price for its location, which is superb. The main problem with this hotel is that it absolutely cannot be reached by car but no one is going to warn you in advance. Rome cab drivers are not much different from bandits. Otherwise the hotel is nice, clean, quiet despite very central location, the staff is friendly, competent and efficient, which is not very common for Rome. The bottom line - do not go to Rome, but if you do, San Carlo is a hotel of choice.

We really enjoyed Hotel San Carlo for many reasons: it was located a couple blocks from the Spanish Steps, close to everything we wanted to see and do while in Rome. The room itself was really nice, and after a long day, traveling from Salerno by train, it was a pleasant surprise. Very clean, marble floors, reasonably comfortable bed, and a roomy bathroom with a large shower area, and lots of room to put our things. The breakfasts offered downstairs in the mornings were wonderful and filling, and the area set aside for it is really nice. They had internet too, if you need to send an e-mail back home. The front desk was extremely helpful with finding restaurants, the Metro, the various landmarks. On the downside, the terrace was closed for renovation so we were not able to enjoy it. Also, we were on the 4th floor and there is no elevator, so be prepared for stairs (we had our bags brought up and taken down for us, so no complaint there)! These are really nothing to complain about when considering how nice Hotel San Carlo was overall.
