In August 2011, we stayed at the Locarno for 5 nights. On the day of our checkout we were approached by the manager and told that the glass on the table had been broken adn that we were going to be charged for it. As we explained to them, there was nothing that we did that could have caused the glass to break. The only use that we had for the table was to put small, light things on it, like bottles of water, maps, and our digital camera. They claimed the room was "pefect" when they rented it to us. By perfect I guess they mean: - Air conditioning that did not function. During our stay, we didn’t have a comfortable nights sleep due to the fact that it was so hot in our room. - Water took 5 to 10 minutes to heat up every time we wanted to take a shower - Hair dryer would only work for 5 minutes and then overheat and turn off. Drying my hair took over half an hour because I had to wait for it to cool down and restart each time. - Only one of the power receptacles in the room actually functioned, so we had to take turns charging our cameras or other devices. Whenever we mentioned these problems to the front desk they did nothing to fix them. Upon our departure we left the number to our italian mobile phone with the reception and asked that the general manager call us to discuss this before charging us. Instead, they never called and just charged our credit card 100 euros. We are contesting the charge with the credit card company, but we feel we need to warn any other future guest of this extremely terrible treatment of their guests. We were extremely polite and patient with the hotel staff during our stay, only to be taken advantage of by the management and have our credit card billed after we left the country. I would caution anyone to STAY AWAY from this hotel no matter how good the deal, as there's a good chance you may end up being billed extras after you've left.

Rate given whithin a very short stay (check-in 2.30 AM check-out 10.00 AM). Think it is not so representative.

The special ambience and high quality of this art deco hotel is not always matched by respective staff expertise and competence.

the single room was very small and noisy;the bathroom was dirty and the shower drain was not working, the only electrical outlet in the bathroom did not work; the reception immediately requested my credit card to guarantee my extra-charges even though I had not yet eaten anything.

Stay away from this hotel. Your vacation will be better if you sleep anywhere else, even on the street.

Interaction with staff very good. We stayed in Rome 5 days (4 nights). Our last stay in Hotel Locarno was 15 years ago, and we enjoyed that so much that we chose to renew the acquaintance in connection with our 50th wedding anniversary.

As you can see from my answers above, i really loved this place: great location, so charming, a really lovely hotel. The staff was great. Very helpful and informed. They made spot-on recommendations. I was there both alone and with my wife and both stays were great.

We were returning to the Locarno for the 2nd time. The first time was for a week, and we were pleased with the size and location of our room. This time was only an overnight stay. Our room was a Junior Suite on the west side (street side) of the "old" building. The room was quite small, on a corner, and was baking-hot. The air-conditioner was barely working, but it was too loud on the street to open the window. I got NO sleep at all (for 500 Euro/night)! However, the service was very good and I enjoy the ambience of the hotel. Much depends upon the room you get--ask for a courtyard room. DO NOT stay on the west side in the summer!! If we had been staying longer, we would have requested a room change--for the equivalent of $750 for the night, it was EXTREMELY overpriced. It's a great location, but they need to upgrade their air-conditioners--Rome sizzles in the summer.

The Locarno is very charming - particularly the bar area and courtyard where you can have drinks, breakfast etc. The staff are all very attentive and polite. The other guests seemed to be mostly English speaking, including British media/creative types (midweek). The location is also very convenient. However, our room was disappointing. It was extremely noisy, despite double glazing. It was also very small and somewhat spartan. Although very clean and reasonably comfortable I thought €240 per night was excessive given the quality of the room. If I stay there again I will insist on a room further from the main road.

Things can always be better, but from my knowledge of Rome, the Locarno is the absolute best value. Our rooms were on the "noisier" side of the building, but with the window seemed to be sound insulating, so you heard almost nothing while it was shut and the air conditioning was quiet and excellent. Location-wise, you cannot ask for anything better. This is both in terms of proximity to the major tourist and shopping destinations and as a little oasis out of the mess and hectic that Rome is. The one down-side is the competence and officiousness of the staff. For example, I asked about the location of San Pietro in Vincoli church, where Michelangelo's Moses is. No one knew. The coffee (both espresso and americano) was pretty bad and when asked if they could make the americano a little stronger, they were not exactly obliging. And, then there was the one day when they closed off the bar and indoor sitting area entirely for a local business meeting. The staff were very matter-of-fact about the inconvenience. Had it been raining, that would have been more than just off-putting. For some it may be a little on the expensive side (especially if you're a dollar customer these days), but I think if you want your stay to be excellent, it's worth the money.

The rooms are very, very small. I thought the breakfast buffet was very rich and obviously the location of the hotel is unbeatable.
