Welcome to Il Papavero hotel, that enjoys a convenient position in the city centre of Rome, in the nice district around Porta Pia, characterized by 19th century buildings, a few steps from the Termini railway station and from the elegant via XX Settembre street.
Il Papavero offers well-appointed guest rooms in a late 19th century building, completly refurbished with lift (except on the 1st floor). The hotel's central position makes it the ideal destination whether you are visiting Rome for business or leisure. Rome is the largest open air museum that has more to see, more to visit than any other city in the world. Within short walking distance, you will find many of Rome's tourist attractions such as the Santa Maria degli Angeli Basilica, the Santa Maria della Vittoria church, the Roman National Museum and the Diocletian thermal baths.
The district is full of public transportation leading you to other fascinating parts of Rome. Furthermore, you will find nearby restaurants and bars, banks, post offices, parking facilities, fashion boutiques, grocery stores and supermarkets.

The hotel is not suitable for families at all. They rooms are in entirely different building, and the hotel information/welcome service is in different building. The rooms are really not good, noisy and you could even hear what your neighbor is even whispering in his room, also as they are close to the busy street so they are noisy. But hotel location is good as it is central and all the visiting places are near and at even walking distance. Wanna share one thing more, i dont know why as nothing bad happened to me but i really dont felt safe in their rooms, the main door of the building is always opened and every body could come in so it was just my feeling which was not OK so please keep all this your mind before booking.

Great hotel! we were there four nights and it was really nice, the location of the hotel is excellent, it is only a few minutes from termini train station, the girl at the fron desk was very nice she gave us all the touristic information about Rome and the directions to get every place.

Nice furnished and clean rooms with bathroom, central located and very economic rates. rooms are a bit noisy and it is not a must to try their breakfast (I recommend to eat in a cafe or a bar). Friendly stuff.

It is very cheap, located at 8 malls from the station. The breakfast is in a bar in front of it. But the worst for me was the stair. It has not an elevator. It is a great dificult with the lugagge. This item must be clear in the page.

Very simple hotel , and for 70 euro per night I think you can find better option. Was really noisy during the nights, bathroom very poor. Just O.K. but I wouldn't return there again. Breakfast was in the small cafe downstairs oposit side of the street, usually very crowded place at 9 am, so if you are in hurry in the morning forget about quick breakfast. But if you have time , you can enjoy typical Italian atmosphere during the morning cafe.

We were not impressed with this hotel at all. The staff were rude and unhelpful and we were forced to endure a night without sleep thanks to noisy neighbours next door. The staff refused to ask them to keep quiet (even after 11:30pm) and refused to move us. Awful! It ruined the end of what had been a wonderful holiday.

We chose Il Papavero because it was one of the least expensive hotels and it was close to the Termini train station. The rooms were basic but clean and nice, private bathrooms, and the employees were excellent and gave us great advice and suggestions. It was several minutes to the train station and metro, we even walked to the center of Rome several times. I would definitely recommend the hotel.

We were looking for budget hotel and the first glance we thought it was less than we expected. We looked around and the prices were much higher, so the price of accommodations was good. The best reward we got from the hotel is the referring to other two hotels in different cities. The favor is priceless and made our stay in Italy as a whole an excellent one. We will go again and again to that hotel, because we felt safe and the management is warm and friendly.

The staff at the hotel were really friendly and gave us lots of information on places to go / bus routes etc. The rooms themselves were fine - slightly noisy but nothing like as bad as I'd expected given that they are in central Rome. As other people have noted elsewhere, you do need to pay on arrival in cash for your stay.

For the price, this place is great. Its pretty basic but there is total privacy, the staff are very welcoming and friendly and the location is good. If you want all mod cons, porters, functioning lifts and room service, don't stay here but if you can take care of yourself this place is perfect. Good restaurants around the corner, close to the train station, spotlessly clean and lovely staff.

Our double room was very basic, however it did have a fan which was very welcome! The bathroom door was just a shutter and the toilet seat was broken, however I realise that compared to other hotels we got a good price, so I wasn't expecting a huge amount!

The hotel is within 10 minutes walking to train station and bus terminal to take any bus to any part of Rome. About 30 minutes walking to the Trevi Fountain. The rooms were better than we expected. We had a room in a separate building around the corner which was recently renovated. I loved this hotel. The included coffee and breakfast cake was offered at a bar directly across the street. I gave an 8 for spaciousness but ALL hotels in Italy have small rooms. Great bed with a tiny balcony with a view to a courtyard. Nice staff. I would stay here again.

Room very small, bathrroom new and clean. No room service after the first night (Sunday?), a little bit of service after the second night, very good room service after the third night. About 7 - 10 min. walking distance from Roma Termini. Included Breakfast in a near bar is quite OK. Quiet enough except of talking people at the reception. However place can be recommended.

the two main problwms: reception is in the different block so hard to access, no elevator, very poor breakfast or you can not say it was a breakfast. with the same budget you could get better accomodation there in rome. the staff sme are good soem are very irresponsible, you dont have any remote control of air conditioning system in your room so each time you have to go and call reception in the next building.

Nice staff. I got a nice recommendation about places to visit, where to find good food, which bus/underground line to take. The surrounding area has several restaurants. The room was a bit noisy, though. Due to the fact that it was facing a street which has traffic the whole day and night.

First let me begin by stating that we are not picky travellers. We book cheaper hotels with the thought that we are not intending to spend a lot of time in the room. Having said that, we expect that we get at least what is featured on the website when we book, and the room we were given was NOT as depicted on the website, which features brightly coloured rooms with (tacky) but suitable amenities. After we checked in, we were taken next door to another building and placed in a dingy room. Also, the elevators in both buildings do not come down to the first floor. The man at the front desk did not mention this fact to us, nor did he mention that we did not need to bring up our suitcaes 2 flights of stairs in 90 degree heat when we were not staying in that building. Our stay there was simply unacceptable for the money we paid (70 Euros) and I cannot believe that this hotel got a rating of 6.9!!! The reason a person would want to stay near the train station is for convenience with luggage. This was not convenient and staff were not helpful. We have been to 5 different hotels in Rome in the last 2 years in the same price range and this was by far the worst - I actually feel ripped off. There are plenty of decent hotels in the same area for teh same price that are much better. Right across teh street is Hotel Stella which we stayed in last year but was not available this year. It was 100 times better than Il Papavaro! Also, we stayed in a loveley B&B a few days ago for the same price (B&B Sistine) in the Vatican city (from the train station you take the Metro and its close by) which was so beautiful!!!

The receptionist that welcomed us was very friendly and professional - and gave us loads of useful tips of how to make the most of our short stay in Rome - and she seemed like she cared abot our well being. It was probably the best service we received during our whole stay in Italy. The hotel was not marked very well, and the reception was on the second floor of a building - and the rooms were located atanother entrance in the same building. We vere provided with keys for 4 doors to enter our room - which could probably be a bit frustrating for some - but for us it was no problem. The receptionist were very careful when showing us to the room, going through all the different keys, etc, etc. The reception was open 24 hours, and the staff were very service minded. The room was small, but nice and clean and recently rennovated =- so in overall good standard. Ours had a little balcony facing a cosy Italian backyard. If you are after a full service hotell stay, this is probablynot a good choice, but for those who look foor a clean and comfortable room in a good location for a reasonable price this is an excellent alternative. It also have a lot of privacy and you feel very independent staying there which we appreciated. We would stay there again, and I would also recommend it to frinds going to Rome.

The room was located inside a suite of rooms in a residential building and had a separate entrance from the room where the main desk was located. The room itself was very clean and it looked like it was recently renovated. I had a problem with the way the employees spoke to me, slightly condescending. The breakfast is in a small coffee shop right outside where you get a choice of a drink and a croissant. It was a great deal for the price.

We have been over Easter in the Hotel Il Papavero for EUR 115.- per night (double). This high rate comes because of Easter days. In total we havn’t been satisfied with the room. First the positive things: Hotel location is near termini (as many hotels) and can easily be reached by foot. Internet connection is possible 15min per day and person for free at an “internet wash-saloon“ 10min walk direction to termini. Hotel consists of two or more floors in one block. Reception is separated from the rooms floor (at least our room was). This is no problem. We have paid before check out. The room has a stone floor. Now negative stuff: Everybody has to discuss the price of EUR 115.- by himself. For me I would say that the price for a room in comparison to the equipment is high. I have had another offer for 3 stars hotel for the same days for EUR 130.- per night. Unfortunately there is no internet at the hotel room possible (with own laptop). The location is very noisy. Electricity is extremely poor: There have been only 3 plugs in a very bad condition. It was not possible to plug in something without electricity noise (already black traces= fire danger). Also many lamps were defect. Television quality is poor (also no battery in remote control). The towels smell like vinegar. There has been less shampoo or soap. Bathroom looks old fashioned and chic, but bath tube had much mould at the corners. In one upper part of a wall there was a duster which was covering an open window to a dusty attic full of workers stuff. The room has no climate control (for those coming to ROME in July). Breakfast is Italian style: You have to go to a bar, there is nothing to choose. Café and Croison (if available, otherwise one piece of dry cake). Please do not expect marmalade or cheese of something fresh. I don’t want to generate the opinion to be someone who needs much comfort during a trip to ROME (I do not need a television during a stay in ROME or rely on a breakfast b

The hotel actually seems to consists of several smaller ones within the same block, so conditions of them probably might vary. The one we stayd was called "albergo napoleon" (or something like that). We have been very satisfied with this one - price/quality ratio was very good. Room itself was rather spatious, clean and with furniture of reasonable quality. Bathroom was unexpectedly large and very nicely designed for hotel of such category. The breakfast consist of a "real" coffe and croissant at a nearby bar, but this seems to be much better option than "traditional" hotel brekfasts at this price range. The price was 50 euro/night for a double room. A small "technical problem" - since the reception is in other block there is nobody from whom to borrow a corkscrew and getting access to the contents of wine bottle gets somewhat complicated (they have to look for a solution here:) The location is reasonable, although not particularly handy to get to, however this is the same for all reasonably priced hotels in Termini area. Recommended.

The hotel was quite good and the staff was very friendly. The room was comfortable with the bathroom just refurbished. However, Termini although well-communicated is not the prettiest area of Rome. The only problem we had is that our neighbours were very noisy (walls are thin), their TV was so loud until late in the night. But that isn't the hotel's fault anyway. The hotel was actually the best bit of Rome. It's a very chaotic city and we found very few friendly Romans! We won't be back in a hurry... but we'll definitely recommend the hotel.

I am so desapointed about this hotel. Price versus kindness and quality was very poor. The site on the internet does not say that the Reception is on the 3th floor of a building and the rooms are in other buildings in the sorrounding area, therefore you have to walked again two blocks whit your bags (that is if you are lucky to get a room close to the so called Reception). And the breakfast ,which is incluided, is in a bar located another block away from your room.....but that is not all, the breakfast (on the internet says American Breakfast) is nothing but a small piece of cake and one coffe and don´t you dare to ask for a juice, because it is not included

This is far better than a one star hotel and although it was basic it was spotlessly clean. The bathroom was brand new with a powerful shower. The bedding/curtains were high quality. The receptionist provided information and maps on our arrival. It was easy to find from Termini Station. The road was noisy but we had 2 x double glazing so it was fine with the windows shut. I would recommend this for budget travellers, at only 100 euro's a night it was a bargain for Rome.

I was very disapponted with my stay at this Hotel. I arrived as a single female traveller and was left at the desk for twenty minutes before being shuffled to another hotel due to lack of space. This was quite distressing and I did not feel welcome or safe. i was put in a terrible single room eevn though I tried to tell them that my friend was arriving but this was hard to communicate. I had to return to Il Papavere for the final two nights of my stay. I made the hotel call the owner to confirm my room before taking my luggage up the many flights of steps again. They called and the owner confirmed, but when we got there, he tried to move my friend and I AGAIN to another hotel. I refused to move and was eventually given a pretty small room for the final two nights. I would not recommend this hotel to anyone.

Single leisure traveller
USA, Nov 2004
The important thing to know about Il Papevero is that it isn't one hotel, but several. You don't know when you arrive exactly where you're going to be housed, which is disconcerting for someone who doesn't know the city. There's a wait at the main reception on v. Castelfidardo while the principale comes to get you -- the first time I waited nearly an hour; the second time about 30 minutes. It's not the most efficient way to do things. On the plus side, the off-site facility I stayed at on v. F. Turati (Esquilino) is, in essence, an affitacamere, and so there was maximum privacy and freedom to come and go. The rooms are small but newish and quite clean. The property is literally two steps from Termini & the metro, which was extremely convenient for me as I was moving about the city quite a lot. The bathroom situation, however, is ridiculous--the shower is an angle in the bathroom and the curtain ends 1/2 meter above the floor. It's impossible not to flood the bathroom each time you shower, and the maids are extremely stingy with towels. On my second stay, I didn't get room service at all, and wound up having to filch towels from an empty room in order to clean up. It was because of the bathroom that I cancelled a planned third stay. Quality vs. price is about what you'd expect for facilities in Rome in this range. I like the Esquilino area, but it's not for everyone -- single women travelers probably wouldn't feel very comfortable there at night. The principale isn't real keen on email, so if you need to make changes or want to ask questions, you'll wind up having to call. Be warned that the quality of the people on the desk at Castelfidardo is extremely variable.

We were quite satisfied with the accomodations - very clean. Our room faced an inner open area and so was very quiet. A small but modern bathroom. The hotel is centrally located, not far from the Termini, altho a bit hard to find at first. Four or five restaurants within a block, with outdoor and indoor dining, a variety of foods and a range of prices make dining out very convenient.

The rooms have recently been restored, I could see that. Unfortunately my loo didn't flush. But I was really happy with my room the first night until in the middle of the night two men knocked on my door and told me I had to go to the reception as soon as I woke up the next day. So I did go to the reception but at first nobody was there, in fact I couldn't even enter because no one opened the door.(Separate buildings). After a while waiting outside, in my room and outside again I was able to get into the house with the reception using the one-comes-out-I-slip-in method. Then I was told I had to change not only my room but the hotel. I wanted to proceed immediately but I was told I had to wait for half a day. They let my leave my luggage there and left for the sights of Rome. When I came back I was led to the room next to the one I had slept the first night in. The room was exactly the same, only that room's loo did flush and there were (used) bubble gums on my sheets. All in all it was OK, only the staff seemed a little haphazard.

Friendly staff, comfortable beds, good service, without any request they put a fridge in our room (wich was very useful). Breakfast at a nice bar around the corner (cappucino + croissant). All in all we enjoyed our stay and would recommand this hotel.

Although I had got a booking confirmation two months in advance, the staff told me after my arrival that the house was full, and I had to take another hotel of the same owner, which would have costed me half an hour to walk. The purpose of booking in advance is just to avoid wasting time with this kind of problems. If there was a necessary modification of my booking, I could have expected at least to get a notice per e-mail in advance! For me a classical case of extreme unprofessional mismanagement! On my strong protest they offered me a small attic, with some sconto certainly. There I couldn`t even stand upright (maybe 1,5 meters height), liliput window immediately at the edge between wall and floor. Almost no water pressure in the shower, not even a waterglass on the lavabo etc. Public areas don`t exist; the whole hotel seems to consist of a number of flats spread all over an old block, losely connected by a dark staircase and a prehistorical lift.

On arrival at the Papavero (which we had booked for 3 nights) during the late evening, we were relocated to another hotel about 5 minutes walk away (with luggage!!). The following morning we had to collect our breakfast voucher form the Papavero - the same procedure applied to the second night. Then, on the following morning we had to pack our bags to eventually move into the hotel that we had booked, losing an hour of sightseeing time - a bit of a pain, but maybe tha's what one should expect from budget accomodation - you get what you pay for. Accomodation in both hotels was fine.

The Air Conditioning broke down (it was needed). When I reported and it was not fixed I was told that Air Conditioning was an added extra which I had not paid for. So I sweated for most of my stay.

The room was very small, but clean. For that price (at least in Rome) it is not bad.

The room was small but enough for my needs. There is no elevator and that was tough because I had a heavy luggage and had to manage to get up with it. The location was good, I easely moved around Rome from there and had a nice time. I missed some services like drinkable water, if you thirst you have to go out to buy you bottle of mineral water, and if this happens at 1 AM you will have to wait until morning. The overall was very positive, I would return.

While the room was very clean and spacious, the phone and the television did not work. When I asked the staff how to dial out, they informed me that I had to purchase one of their calling cards first (6 Euros). The card did not help matters and I was not able to phone home during the three days I stayed there.

The room was a bit small but completely new, and the bathroom was very nice although the shower was a bit feeble. It is a good location, convenient for Termini but not too close to all the other budget hotels, in what i found to be a more pleasant area. Staff were friendly, but in principle you have to get out of the room by 10 in the morning when checking out.
