The staff were welcoming and friendly. Breakfast was great (Daily croissants, cold cuts, yoghurt, cereals and juice/coffee). The location was fantastic, close to the Colosseum, Metro and buses, and walking distance to the Trevi fountain. HEAPS of cheap eats around. The Chinese restaurant around the corner was yummy and very reasonably priced and an Argentinean steak restaurant - best bugger in Rome! The only downside is the tiny shower. If you were a large person, you would not fit in the shower at all. Overall, wonderful experience for the value.

The hotel was perfect...close to transportation. Staff spoke enough English to point us in the right directions and they were very helpful with making phone calls. Could not have found a more perfect hotel....good luck with the ice making venture ladies. We told staff Americans love ice and drinks cold and they are going to look into a ice machine. Ciao

There were no nightlamps by the beds and the lights in the room were very poor in generel. In many of public areas in the hotel the lights has gone out, so it was difficult to see at night. At breakfast it was difficult to get a table, and there were not enough bread at the buffet.

Our room at the Hotel Grifo was located in the "annex", which is across the street from the building in which reception is located. Using the key we were given, we entered the building and found ourselves in a dark hallway, without an elevator, and climbed two long flights of stairs to get to our room. The hallway was not lit, and there was no natural lighting. It was difficult to see in order to get the key in the door. Additionally, the doors were not clearly marked, and we were not given clear instruction upon check in. We encountered another couple who, like us, were having trouble trying to figure out which room was there's and getting the door open. As it turned out, after a trip back across the street to reception, we had to go up another floor, and the doors on the main hallway were not doors to the room, but actually provided access to a hallway, off of which the room doors were. In my opinion, the failure to light the hallways presents a safety concern. I expected a small room, but this was probably the smallest room I have ever stayed in, even in a large city. There was barely enough room to walk around the bed, and no space to manueuver our luggage. On the pro side, the room was clean, at a great location very close to the Colosseum, and fairly priced. Reception was pleasant, and the breakfast, though served in a very small and warm room, was good.

The staff was helpful and the location was great. Our first night was in a room that needed renovations but upon talking to Rosa at the front desk we were moved to a room that accomodated the four of us easily, plus we had our own outside patio. I would stay there again but would request an outside patio again.

Toilet was used & unflushed prior to us arriving in the room !! Also the stairwell had no lights working making the steps very dangerous at night - we asked for these to be fixed on our first day & 3 days later they were still not working. Reception staff forgot to arrange an airport pickup so we had to get the train & when we arrived there was no help regarding places to go & how best to get around the city. There is no welcome pack or any info in the room not even any dialing numbers for reception.Breakfast area is not big enough to accomodate the guests so we were standing around waiting for people to finish & we never once saw the bar area open. The location is good however there are hotels nearby of a higher star rating for the same price. Would not recommend this hotel.

The hotel staff was amazing, they were always helpful and patient and they all spoke perfect english. The hotel is well located and very clean. Breakfast is abundant and of a very good quality and variety of foods, there's an elevator to access the rooms which always comes in handy, the room was very comfortable with a TV and a fridge, the heating was great and you could smell the coffee of the breakfast which was a really nice way to wake up. WIFI service works perfect but only in the reception floor. We highly recommend this hotel as we had some great days and the staff gave us a map and indications to get wherever we wanted. You can also have some drinks for a very reasonable price at the hotel, so it's nice to go to the hall have a coke and check your e-mails.

We really enjoyed our stay at Grifo. It is good value for money in a very central location. Easy walk to Colosseum, Roman Forum, Trevi Fountain, Pantheon. Front desk staff were very helpful. The room was small, but not the smallest we had in Italy, and there was plenty of cereal, rolls, meats, cheeses etc for breakfast. A big plus was free wifi in the room (because we were in the front section of the hotel). The only complaint would be that the hot water was very unpredictable - sometimes scalding hot and then suddenly freezing cold.

Location was great. Very historic, and close to so many sites to see. Our room was disappointing; poorly furnished (no dresser, etc.) and very small. The room needs serious refurbishing. Especially the door locks & keys! Breakfast was good, except for the coffee. Alessandro was great. We were told on arrival that Internet access was free and then later told by another staff member that it cost money (3 euros or 5 euros depending on time). when I said that we were told it was free, then it was "oh, well 10 min is free." Even though the room was disappointing, the price was a good one, for the location.

If you come from Dublin or have been to Dublin then you can compare the area where the Hotel Grifo is to our "Temple Bar" area. There is a wide range of restaurants, cafe's, boutiques, Ice Cream shops, pubs etc around the area. next door to the Grifo there is a Dry Cleaners and a barber around the corner and a supermarket up the street. If you like fresh fruit there are a number of fruit & veg shops around the area. All the main attractions are within easy walking distance and if you are not up to walking, then the metro station is only a couple of minutes walk down the road. For €4 the daily ticket is of great value. The staff in the hotel were excellent and gave us some very good recommendations for restaurants over by the Trevi Fountain and in Cavor. Tips forget the Tour Guides - they are very expensive and you can hire Audio Guides or take an English language tour at most venues for between €4 - €7. Our longest que was at the Vatican museum and that was an hour. To take a full walk around the Collesuen / Forum and palitino gardens it takes one & half days your ticket into the Coleseum will cover you for the next day at the Palitino gardens. Same for the Vatican Museum take your time worth seeing all of it we had to come back the next day to go to St. Peters Basicilla. we tried a different restauran every night and compared to Dublin, they were reasonable. If you are going for a Pizza go to a Pitazzeria. Great steaks in the Argentinian Steak House in Carvor. Try get to the restaurant for 8pm they start to buzz around that time. We flew Ryan Air - great value for money but you shouls consider brining a cushion for your lower back and your neck, seats are upright and cannot be adjusted. they do make a good cup of tea albeit over priced. While in Rome, do as the Romans do - take it easy, long lunches - Ice Crean and an evening meal with a glass of wine or a few beers. don't try do all the sites in one trip, leave some for your next trip. Good scores sure, but if it's clean and tidy, beds are comfy, the staff are helpfull and take the time to explain things, how to get to places and advice on local facilities, then what more do you want? The shower recess was compact as was the room. But it's a renovated older building a few hundred metres from the Forum and Colosseum, small grocery type stores and eateries close by, there'e even a local bus stop almost outside, and it's quiet. Breakfast was good and well presented too.

The facilities are really bad. tel doesn't work...Air condition drops ice and water...I stayed there for 3 days. no hot water in the first night due to some issues of electric equipment...in the next nigth, my Neighbor's door can't open due to lock problem, very noisy when they repaired. Considering 100e per day, it is the worest and most expensive hotel I lived in my whole italy trip(I lived in 8 hotels in 7 cities). Staff is helpful. breakfast is good, location is ok. but I wouldn't recommend this hotel to you

Location, Location, Location! This hotel is in a very safe and central district. Full of restaurants and bars in the evening. All very good priced and very good food. However, the breakfast was a disaster. Always went to the bar round the corner! We had to struggle everyday to open and close the room door because the keyhole was too big for the key! They said that they will update to automatic keys. Once we got stuck in the lift because the lights went off. It is more like a 2 star than a 3 star. The owner was very nice and very helpful though. I would stay there again although with a lower level of expectations.

We were very pleasantly suprised with the location of Hotel Grifo. It is in a perfect area for walking to all the sites such as the forum and colisium. There were a large number of wonderful restuarants surrounding the hotel as well. Transportation via metro or train was also close by. The hotel met our needs perfectly and I would definetly recommend it.

Great location, fantasic staff, it's just the cleanliness of the room and the the breakfast menu that disappointed me greatly. Our room could do with some serious redecoration and new bed linen (nice and clean). Also the breakfast menu is nothing up to standard - fresh vegatables and a bit more selection. Like I said - very friendly and helpful staff -the only thing that saved the hotel. Would only return if saw some real changes.

Location wise it could not be beaten as in a safe quietish narrow streeted area with great bars and restaraunts nearby. This however is not a hotel for anything more than sleeping in as the rooms are tiny ( But clean ) and there is no real communal area. What looked like the TV area the staff/ owners were in and rarely saw any other guests apart from at Breakfast but we did however plan not to be in the hotel so apart from room size it was not bad at all.

I had 3 problems w/ this hotel. 1) No parking. I emailed the hotel upon reservation stating I would need the special parking pass. They claimed never receiving it and also advised me that it wasn't in the exact wording anyway. They waved me away to find my own pay parking, the closest space I found was 2 miles away! 3 Metro stops and 1 hour later I arrived back at the hotel, w/ my 9-year old in tow, sweaty and pissed off. They claimed miscommunication, I claimed bad customer service. 2) No AC. The AC in our rooftop Quad room did not work. Never was fixed, for one night we sweated it out. No windows in room and no ceiling fan. Opening the door only led to swarms of mosquitos. 3)Our room was located a floor above where the elevator reached. 2 flights of outside metal stairs led to our room. Not good for my breathing impaired and afraid of heights parents. Good points: The maid was fantastic and friendly. She remembered my son's name. The TV in the room actually worked but wasn't plugged in for some reason and the remote was nowhere to be found. The breakfast was decent. Cereal, juice, coffee, tea, croissants. Some cheese and ham. This hotel would be ok if you did not have a car to park. Only a block or 2 from the Metro stop.

This place was very good for our family of two adults and two young teens. The price including the great breakfast was good. The room wasn't that attractive but it was very clean . The staff was nice and helpful we really like them. Almost all the staff spoke some English and most spoke it pretty well. We would definitly stay here again and recomment it to others. The breakfast was very good. If they ran out of something it would in a few moments be refilled. The Grifo also has a nice balcony upstairs to sit on and injoy the veiw and a breeze. This place is not fancy but quant and very well run.

We ordered a room with internal shower. It was forgotten, and we got a room with the world’s smallest shower from day 2. We payed full price for all nights. However, the breakfast was very Italian (lousy).

I paid more to get a hotel with good reviews. No problems with Grifo. The reception staff were very helpful. We were late for breakfast once and it was not a problem. BUT we stayed 13 days in Rome, Florence and Venice and the Hotel breakfasts never varied. Also, apparently there are no toasters in Italy. Do not get into a taxi unless the fare is guaranteed by the Pope, check your restaurant bills and always check your change. You are expected to haggle so be prepared for argument - don't be afraid to walk away, this can get you the price (which should be less than half that originally asked).

Great central location within walking distance to collisseum, trevi fountain and most of the usual sites. We stayed 4 nights. The hotel staff were very friendly and helpful. They recommended where to find the best places to eat, how to get to the vatican using the number 40 bus and and where to fill up our water bottles from the many street drinking fountains where the water was fresh and cool which saved us a fortune in bottled water. The hotel rooms were a bit small compared to modern hotels but we expected that and they were clean and comfortable. I would recommend getting a room with a terrace. We did and enjoyed having a quiet drink there in the late afternoon before getting ready to go out for the evening. I would definately recommend the Grifo to friends.

The neighborhood was... ok. the restaurants was ok.. maybe i wanted something a bit more upscale. there were some crowed bars near by but i didn't have time to ck it out. I also got lost trying to come back to the hotel from the Trevi fountain... I really luv the shower in this place. After staying in Venice with a shower that did not have any water pressure.. this place was heaven. The only "interesting" thing was the door had to be locked from both outside and inside. My wife complained that when i went too k a shower down the hall, she was "locked" in the room...ha ha ha! Overall i had a decent stay.. just wish it wasn't so pricey. Maybe that's just US dollar in Rome... :(

Wonderful breakfast and Ali truly made the breakfast special. Loved the rooftop terrace just outside of the room. Close to bus routes, easy walk to colleseum and forum. We were four people and the room was a bit crowded, but acceptable.

We got Room 24 which is hot as hell. The air condition is not working and nobody told us, so turning the air condition on heats the room even more. We complained and got the very nice terrace room for the next night for lower price. The next night they put another victim in hellroom 24, which also shouted and complained. The stuff could have used other rooms or even told us that the air condition is not working. Our stay was in early springtime and off season, so there was no reason to use that particular room 24.

The staff are very helpful and welcoming. We didn't get a room with balcony but it was very clean and the bathroom was just the ticket. Breakfast was great and the coffee even better and I don't even drink it! Centrally loocated couldn't be better placed. Children thought it was great as did my wife who has an eye for any area not cleaned. I have already recommended to friends. All staff spoke English.

Great location. Helpful staff. Good facilities especially internet and wi-fi. Map on site is not particularly good, and you will probably get lost like us the first time, but when you know where it is, its close and easy to public transport.

Excellent location for sightseeing, we walked everywhere. Interesting area, lots of restaurants. Our room was rather small & cramped but others' in our party was OK. We were content with the breakfast -the usual continental buffet. Friendly staff. Overall good value for money, we would stay there again. (One point-we didn't notice any fire escapes or fire instructions etc here, there seemed to be just the one main (narrow) staircase & the lift - is this usual in Italy?)

This Hotel is right in the middle of everything and we could walk any where. However it is in a side street, not in the safest looking part of town. We had no incident and there were many good restaurants to choose from in the area. Our biggest complaint was that when we arrived at the end of a long day they did not have our reservation down (bring a copy of your reservation). They made a few phone calls and we followed a lady down the alley to some kind of boarding room for the first night. After that we stayed in the hotel. We got use to the suroundings, for the price it is good. I would stay there again if I could not afford a better place.

I loved this hotel. The management was so helpful. They gave us maps to Rome and suggested places to go and see. They were very helpful with the buses. Great staff!! We bought wine to drink on our rooftop porch and they uncorked it for us and gave us glasses and plates for our cheese. It was just a great place to stay and the staff was very helpful with everything, making our stay in Rome very pleasant and one to remember. The location was great for finding places to eat. There were so many restaurants in the area it was hard to go out at night and make a decision as to which one to eat at. Wine shops, delis, and gelaterias were within 1 block. Great location!!!

Fantastic place to stay. Staff was so nice (which I didnt think was a big deal when I read it on other comments but its seriously such a relief to have that kind of service). Breakfast was good although some more variety would have been appreciated. Location is excellent. Very close to most things you want to see. Overall one of the best European hotels I have ever stayed in.

We booked in January 2007 for a family quad room with a terrace. When we got there they told me the family that had the room prior still had it because their flight was cancelled. They put us in two double rooms one without a shower. They did not honour our booking. I felt the other family should have been placed into the two doubles not us. After getting off a 8 hour flight that is not what we wanted to deal with. The location of the hotel is excellent though. The hotel is clean and the breakfast was fine in the morning to get you going.

We recently stayed at the Hotel Grifo and it was an excellent hotel for our stay in Rome. The staff was extremely helpful, especially Alessandro and Sylvia. The location was ideal to use local transportation. I would definitely recommend other travelers to consider staying at this hotel.

Thanks a lot to Hotel Grifo and its staff for this perfect long weekend. I have spent 4 days in Rome with my sister and enjoy a wonderful stay in particular due to the nice and helpful staff of the hotel. The hotel is not a 4 stars hotel, but it is ideally located. We choose to share the double room with bathroom on the floor. The room was small but clean.

Second visit and would return. Staff very friendly and helpful. No communication problems. Very patient when I tried out my Italian! Good breakfast. Excellent service when our room was too warm - were offered a choice of two other rooms and within half an hour we'd changed rooms to a larger room at no extra cost. Lots of restaurants nearby - had some very good meals. Great location for sightseeing - at the Colosseum in minutes.

Location, A --easy walk to attractions. Breakfast, CMinus except for coffee, which was excellent. "Muesli" concocted of raw oatmeal mixed with cornflakes. No fresh food or fruit. Even the toast was in a cellophane package. Room, DMinus. Very noisy. Hard, lumpy bed. Half the lights didn't work and the other half were too dim to see by. No mini-fridge, Walls were patched and the patches weren't painted. Everything about Grifo screamed, "Penny-pinching." Staff, C. Lots of smiles, but they didn't do much. Overall grade, Cminus.

Hotel Grifo proved to be a very impressive hotel in terms of price, location and overall service provided. Whilst relatively small, the bedroom and bathroom offered everything you need for your stay; my only criticism being that the room could often get quite hot, despite us travelling to Rome in February. The location of the hotel is perfect, being just a few minutes walk from the nearest metro station. All major sights are part of the metro routes, although all can be reached easily by foot from the hotel. This makes travelling around Rome very easy and means more time for the fun bits! Hotel Grifo is situated in lovely cobbled streets surrounded by many restaurants and bars, creating a charming atmosphere. This hotel comes highly recommended, above all for its fantastic location. I am already planning my next trip to Rome and will not hesitate in staying here again.

A very nice clean hotel in a very convenient location. Staff very friendly. Very clean. Really near the colosseum, and all other usual attractions (except Vatican) within easy walking distance. Not the Ritz but we didn't pay for the Ritz. Literally 2 minute walk to metro and bus. Breakfast adequate. we would definitely go back if staying in Rome again.

We stayed here for 3 nights. It was a great location not too far from the train station and walking distance from most main attractions. Staff were really great, you can sense that it is a family run place. It was clean. I would stay here again and tell friends to stay here.

I wish that I could choose a rating higher than 10 for "Quality of Service Provided". The staff at the Hotel Grifo treated my wife and I like we were family (except better). They were helpful in directing us to eateries that were not touristy, as well as just being friendly to chat with. The man who ran the breakfast took a cute liking to our two year old daughter and every morning would make hot chocolate especially for her - no one else. The rooms admittedly weren't spacious, and could be noisy given that the flooring was stone - but the friendliness of the staff quickly makes up for this. We would stay here again in a heartbeat for the staff alone! On another note, it is literally a couple of blocks from the Coliseum and 20 minutes or so from just about anything you want to see.

Rooms at Hotel Grifo are very clean but a little bit too small. We stayed 5 days and we were 3 in a triple room (photos on the website are not the reality), we did not have enough space in the cupboard to put our clothes. The bathroom is very small could be a little bit larger, but for a few days, it is alright. But if you wish a very well placed simple hotel in Rome, with reasonable price and very good service, book at the hotel Grifo. It is not my 1st experience of an hotel in Rome and I have to say that Hotel Grifo is very good for the welcome the employees are providing to the customers. They are always ready to help and answer your questions. For that reason I think I will book again to that hotel. Breakfast price/quality was very good which is not always the case in Rome.
