We enjoyed our stay at the Emmaus. It is a modest hotel, but was very near the Vatican as advertised, being only about 5-10 minutes wheelchair push from St. Peters Square (< 5 minutes walk). The prices were reasonable for the date for Rome, being 300 Euros per night for two rooms for 3 people (2+1) compared with 350 - 500 Euros at others we looked at. My Uncle needed a wheelchair and it was good access at the hotel, BUT it was a collapsible chair and my Uncle could walk a few metres, allowing him to get out of the chair into the lift, which was a narrow door one - too narrow for the full width of the wheelchair and also to walk into the breakfast room. A disabled person who cannot leave their chair would have difficulty. Not only in this hotel, however, but getting about Rome generally. Many kerbs, for instance are about 10-15 cm high and do not have ramps and many pavements and roads are cobbled. We all found the hotel staff were very friendly and helpful and the breakfast was a self service, continental type which all 3 of us found satisfactory. I would be happy to return to the hotel as it is very near the Vatican, and we found it was clean, comfortable and friendly.

Convenient to the Vatican. Lots of street noise. Floors not clean - very dusty. VERY small bathroom and shower. Staff generally helpful. WiFi is not free as noted, and it was very inconsistent even when you paid the fee for it - did not connect regularly and cut out often.

The location of the hotel is perfectly close to St. Peter's. There is a taxi stand right in front of the hotel, the bus stop Cavalleggeri (with lots of bus lines) is only 50m away. Good restaurant closely by, e.g. Pane e Dolci with fantastic porchetta sandwiches. The hotel is better compared to other 3*** hotels in the center of Rome, especially the breakfast.

The single room I had was very very small (a kind of storage room) without any window, and very noisy. Unbelievable for the hotel to propose such rooms, never seen that before ! The only good point is the location, really next door to Vatican. Chambre sans fenêtre, minuscule et très bruyante, quasiment un cagibi ! Pas une chambre d'hôtel. Seul point positif, l'hôtel est à 100m du Vatican.

Overall the location is nice and it is really near St-Peter. HOtel staff is frendly but not good at english which sometimes hard to communicate. This hotel is better for family not single. It has breakfast finish at 9:30am, and you can not ask for remove this from the total room rate. There is no wifi connection, and only one PC in the 1st floor, which needs to pay.

The hotel was pretty much as advertized. Rooms were small but adequate. Location was outstanding for the Vatican. Neighborhood was pleasant as well. The biggest problem was the bathroom had a ligering sewer smell in it that never left and as others have indicated the shower is too small for an adult. Also the discount Venere gave me (4%) was not recognized by the hotel so I paid the full amount. Overall I was satisfied and would stay there again.

We chose this hotel for location and it was a very nice stay. We enjoyed the proximity to the Vatican. The cleanliness and breakfast was average on the scale. The location and hospitality were well above average. Our party stayed in two rooms. The room on the interior was rather triangle shaped but adequate, the exterior room was on a busy street that became active very early. We advise requesting the interior rooms for a pleasant stay.

Hotel was so close to St Peter's Square - 3 minute walk, even though it is not visible from the Hotel. Rooms very small but adequate. Has lift. Breakfast gave better variety than other hotels in Italy. Expensive for the size of the room and no restuarant facility but very convenient for the Vatican. The staff member spoke excellent english and was very helpful.

Had a fantastic stay at the Emmaus - it's almost next door to the Vatican. We couldn't believe it! Hotel staff were courteous and helpful. Plenty of local restaurants, the last restaurant near the Vatican on the same side as the hotel had excellent food and was very reasonable. The only drawback was the noise from the plumbing / central heating system / air conditioning right outside our rooms (Nos. 102 and 107). I've since e-mailed the hotel with this feedback and had a lovely reply. With the help of some Vino, the noise didn't cause too much of a problem. I would definately recommend the hotel but ask for a room on a higher floor.

The rooom, which I occupied as a single person, had a somewhat awkward, triangular form and was very narrow at some places. Service was friendly and competent and the very nearness to the Vatican where I had to attend a congress was a great advantage, as is the presence of taxis in front of the hotel and the presence of busstatinos at less than 100 m and a five min walk to the railway station San Pietro.

This is now my second review of this hotel (see also June 2005). I'd like to refer you to my first review for a more detailed description, as neither the hotel nor my assessment of it have changed significantly. Travelling as a group of four this time around, I can, however, offer some additional advice regarding the rooms. It is definitely worth a try to talk to the person at the reception desk if you find that your room is exceptionally tiny or otherwise lacking. This is the case with the single room #204 (warning!), which gives the distinct feeling of having been a storeroom in its previous incarnation. We were able to change this room after two nights and found the alternative to be clearly preferrable. By and large, this hotel offers decent value for your money by Rome's standards, and the location close to St. Peter Square is ideal.

This hotel has an excellent location for St Peter's, the Vatican and is close to buses and metro station. The hotel behaves more like an apartment building and is in need of maintenace. My room was a single size, with a double bed, leaving no room to move. The carpet was stained. My companion had a bigger room but suffered a flooded bathroom floor and an odour which was not fixed, nor was a room change offered. Despite claiming internet access, there was none.

We stayed just before xmas in this hotel. The room was warm and extra blankets were supplied by the very helpful and welcoming staff. We would use this hotel again. The hotel is only a few minutes from St Peter's and the Vatican. We were advised by members of the Swiss Guards to be at the Vatican a half hour before it opened to ensure there wasn't a long wait. This proved to be the case. Generally though, there were fewer tourists in Rome just before xmas.

Upon arrival the staff at the desk handed us a key and sent us on our way up an ancient elevator to find our room by ourselves. We carried heavy luggage and the staff made no move to help carry anything. The room was cramped with peeling wallpaper and broken furniture. Thank goodness our stay was for only one night. The one redeeming quality is that the hotel is within walking distance of the Vatican and a few good restaurants.

Breakfast was good, staff was helpful and pleasant. My single room was tiny with a really tiny bathroom. The drain beneath the shower was inadequate, resulting in water all over the floor when you showered! It was slippery!

We recenently stayed at the Emmaus Hotel. The room was as we expected from reading other reviews, small, but clean. (wooden elavator is kind of neat as long as you are only 2 people without luggage)Room was nice and quiet as it was opposite the street. Ended up switching to a room with 2 single beds as the original room with a double bed was REALLY tiny. We simply loved the location though, made our trip to Rome that much better. We would certainly recommend the Emmaus as we would far sooner have the small room in a great location than the hassel of a big room you have to commute from. We could walk to St Peter's square in 3 minutes. The area was relly nice and safe for walking at all hours. Sidewalk cafes right outside the door. Hop-on-off tour bus pick up at St Peter's square just pay the driver. It was a really nice time. We would probably return to the Emmaus again.

Rooms are very Euroupean in size. The bathroom facilities need some upgrading. The shower stall as it were was barely large enough for my 18 year old to turn around, it is about a three foot wide stall and you had better not drop your soap as you cannot bend over to get it. The street is a quiet area and the location to the Vatican is great. The breakfast buffet was very well done and the food selection was good. This is an older building and I was traveling with two teenage boys and found it to be quite adequate. The fare for a shittle from the airport cost us about 50usd. Sounds a little steep, but it was better than a taxi and also better than our original plan to taking the subway after a long flight.

We were a family group with 2 triple rooms in the middle of the humid summer. The Air Conditioning in our rooms worked so well that sometimes we had to turn it up because it got too cold, but no complaints about that. The breakfast room downstairs was more than adequate and very nice to be able to start the day with a full stomach. The hotel location is perfect when wanting to be near the Vatican. We were literally 5 minutes away on foot, and could hear St. Peter's bells ringing from our room. There are several cafes, restaurants, and shops on the same street as the hotel so it was very convenient for meals, souvenirs, and supplies. We did lots of walking around the city and really appreciated the hotel elevator at the end of the day! All of the staff were friendly, pleasant, and helpful; although not all of them could speak English which was trying at times. There were lots of teens and young adults staying there when we were there, probably because of the summer holidays. Some friends of ours stayed at Emmaus as well, and another couple in our group stayed just down the road at La Rovere because Emmaus was sold out. We would stay there again for the reasonable price and convenient location.

The location is superb, very close to St Peter's Square and bus 64 will take you to almost all places of interest, although along a busy road which results in a lot of noise for the rooms on the streetside and lower floors. The staff was very friendly and helpfull. We only missed fruit at breakfast. Nice hotel with very good public transportation connections, and only footsteps away from the Vatican. This hotel gave us exactly what we were expecting. We decided that we wanted to stay in the Vatican area and the Emmaus is a three minute walk (using the underpass) from St Peter's square. It is a fantastic end to the day to walk through it on the way back to the hotel. Cabs were plentiful and reasonable, there were lots of good restaraunts nearby to eat and it offered a good base from which to explore Rome. Our only slight criticism is that some rooms have yet to be renovated and so the plumbing is a little noisy if you get one of the older rooms. However, hotels with character don't come without conditions and if that sort of thing bothers you there are plenty of other corporate hotels to chose from in Rome. Accomodation in Rome is quite expensive compared to some other European cities and with this in mind this hotel is excellent value for money. The staff were helpful and friendly - offering advice on where to eat and drink when we arrived late and organising a cab to the airport. We would happily go there again.

Emmaus has the very best location available for those who come to Rome as Catholic pilgrims. That's about all it has though. We have spent the last two Christmases in Rome, and we much preferred our experience at the Fourstars Hotel Michangelo, a couple of blocks further away from St. Peter's. The reason was staff. Emmaus appears to be run by a family. The family neither speaks much English, despite the fact that all the guests we saw were either British or American, nor is particularly helpful. The availability of garage parking is one of the hotel's selling points, but when we brought our car back into the crowded, traffic-clogged area in front of the hotel, we were told that no attendant was available and we would have to find the garage ourselves. Half an hour of searching later, our Italian much improved by frustration, we demanded, and got, the "unavailable" attendant. Everyone on the staff was much nicer after that incident. At the Michangelo, we were offered our choice of free or garage parking. We chose the free, which turned out to be in the perfectly safe, blocked off alley behind the hotel. The breakfasts at Emmaus was adequate but unexciting; those at the Michangelo were spectacular. Still, we may stay at Emmaus again, which explains why I don't want my name published. It wasn't too bad, and it cost a few dollars less than the Michangelo, though not if you count the cost of the garage.

This hotel is in a great location if you want to stay within a three minute walk of the Vatican. The staff were very accommodating and friendly. The elevator is very old, but did have old world charm. Breakfast was also very good. The only drawback is that the picture makes the hotel look nice and well maintained. Teh public areas were fine, however, the room we stayed in had wallpaper coming off the walls and the curtains were falling off the tracks. The furnishings were very plain. The room was clean and the washroom had been recently renovated, so if you don't mind not having something a little nicer, the location makes up for the lack of maintenance.

We enjoyed the spaciousness of the room. It was very comfortable for a family of four. However, the shower in the bathroom was very small. The staff was very polite and easy to work with, although there were a few language difficulties. The breakfast was ok, however on their web site they picture fresh fruit as part of the breakfast. We never saw fresh fruit. The location was excellent and there were some good sidewalk cafes very close. We would at the hotel again.

The Emmaus was exactly what we were looking for - an excellent location at reasonable price. I met four different front desk people, but Gian Paolo (sp?) was so accomodating. We will be recommending the Emmaus to anyone we know visiting Rome. You cannot beat the location for visiting St. Peters and the Vatican Museum. Truly, our stay at the hotel was uneventful - exactly what we expected.

This hotel has an excellent location- and this is really it's only draw. The walls are paper thin and the rooms clean. Our room had a very bad odor coming from the AC. I was disappointed that after corresponding with the hotel about setting up a Vatican tour they informed us upon arrival that they could not do this. We managed to make due on our own. The parking at this hotel is very convenient. The garage sends someone to get your car and it is returned upon your departure.

We were thrilled with the location, so close to the Vatican. It also helped having a Taxi stand directly in front of the hotel. Our street was not as busy as others. Our family enjoyed our visit to Rome and would recommend this hotel to friends. The only concern we had was the noise level in the hallways. We had a few noisy neighbors and we were awakened by them. The hotel was clean and the rooms were nicely furnished. It was a very short walk to the Vatican, exactly what we were told when we booked the rooms. There was a wonderful restaurant within walking distance of the hotel so it made our evening meal very enjoyable as well. This hotel had an elevator as well and made it easier to transport luggage.

The hotel is located coveniently close to Saint Peter Square (3 min walk). The bus station (#64 to and from Termini) is just around the corner. While my room was rather small it was nevertheless clean and perfectly serviceable. However, the shower was so small that it took me a couple of tries to figure out a way to actually take a shower without bumping into the wall. :-) Notable is the good bed/mattress. As my room was facing the backyard, I had no trouble whatsoever with street noise. Be warned, though, that noise from the adjacent rooms can be quite loud (shower!). The staff was very friendly and helpful, the breakfast good. All in all, a clear recommendation.

I highly recommend this fabulous hotel. The staff were so friendly, spoke perfect English, the hotel was in a great location--we could see St. Peter's square from our private balcony, but most importantly--they made a delicious cup of capuccino for breakfast. Can't beat it! The room were impeccable and the breakfast was a huge spread of meats, cheeses, bread, cereal, juices, and pastries. We loved Emmaus and will go back when we return to Rome.

The location is excellent and the neighborhood was very nice. The bus stop 5 minute walk up the hill. St.Peter's is a 5 minute walk. The rooms are small however the place has old world charm and they keep it up very nicely. I would recommend this to travlers, it was worth the money by rome standards.

Emmaus is a conveniently located hotel for my purposes. I chose it due to its proximity to St Peters and the Vatican. The staff is very hospitable, they make the effort, to address your needs. The rooms are modest but clean. The bathrooms are too small for comfort. All in all, I might return but for the same money, I might try to find a hotel that offers a bit more luxury.

The hotel is very close to St. Peter's which might be the only thing going for it. There was a lot of noise from inside and out. We were on the street side so maybe it would be more quiet in an inside room but we could see St.Peter's dome from our window and the square down the street. No carpet so we listened to the people upstairs move their furniture around late one night. Plumbing was very loud. The room was big, the bathroom tiny. Do not stay here if you are a large person and want to shower. The shower is extremely small. We were all girls under 120 pounds and we could barely bend over to pick up anything dropped. The room smelled. Probably mold and mildew from the bathroom. We're used to spotless USA bathrooms. The room was tidy but the floor was not clean. I think the hotel was too expensive for the room but we could see the pope's bedroom from our window. The only reason I would recommend this hotel is for the location and the English speaking staff which was very helpful.

The hotel was great! It was so close to the Vatican that we were able to visit and see Pope John Paul II three times. What a treasury! I would recommend this hotel for families as they support a family environment. The area has many small shops and resturants so you have your choice and will not get tired, we did not and we stayed there for 10 nights.

This hotel is very close to the Vatican and only a stone's throw from the rest of the city. The staff were fantastic particularly the young man on the front desk who helped us considerably with getting around, recommending a bus that would take us to the heart of the city at a low price.

Everything went very well except when I first arrived there, they had misplaced my booking and it took the receptionist more than 10 minutes to fix it. Otherwise, the location is really great, the room was clean, breakfast was also good. They also allowed us to keep our luggages there till evening although we checked out in the morning.

Great location just next to St Peter's Basilica. We were told the best place to stay was in the historical centre - it was a bit of a walk to get to and from after a night out, but no more than 20 mins. However, the Emmaus offers a good price and the Vatican is one of the star attractions which you'll keep coming back to, so overall the loaction was perfect. The rooms are basic but clean - the main rooms are spacious but the bathrooms haven't enough space to swing a mouse in! Staff were friendly, breakfast was good.

We had just 4 days for Rome and we should not tell it too loud how excellent this hotel is. It is small enough to be familiar and it is big enough to feel comfortable. The people from the hotel were excellent, very friendly and competent. Just some steps away from the Vatican. Next time in Rome we would definetely stay again in this hotel.

We were very dissapointed. The hotel was very close to the Vatican which was useful, but not with the views promised from the rooms, maybe if we stood on the roof we could have seen it. On a very busy road so noise was a problem, especially early in the morning. Generally the hotel was in poor condition. We had to be moved as there was a terrible noise in the plumbing on the first floor. 2nd floor was better. The breakfast was just okay - staff too quick to clear the table. I would not recommend this hotel to anyone.

The main purpose of our visit was to go to the Vatican. The age group was mixed and in terms of location and friendliness of staff, this is an excellent hotel. However, the rooms & decor were not quite like those in their pictures-we joked about them being airbrushed! The rooms were clean & generally comfortable though and the helpfulness of the staff more than made up for it. The hotel is in the process of redecoration so perhaps this will change. One word of warning-we took the train from Da Vinci airport into the city & then taxied over to the hotel, which proved expensive. We were given details of a taxi service (www.rome-shuttle.com) which was considerably cheaper for our return trip with less hassle. It is worth checking out-might not be of value to single travellers but would be of use to groups. Overall, this is a hotel I would return to if I were to go back.Enjoy your trip.
