The hotel is well maintained. It appears to have been fairly recently renovated. The breakfast buffet was very good, not particularly imaginative, but with decent variety. The room was nicely furnished and maintained. The bathroom was modern. We fit comfortably in the room with two suitcases. The windows are excellent and really block the street noise. We did open them a couple of times and enjoy the street sounds and the fresh air. The air conditioning worked well. The staff was friendly and knowedgable. All of the people we encountered at the front desk spoke English well. The location was great. It is very close to the Cavour Metro stop. It is just a short block off of Via Cavour, a major, wide (by Italian standards) street, but is in an old neighborhood of narrow streets and interesting buildings. There are a number of good, small restaurants in the neighborhood with reasonable (for Rome) prices. We asked one of the desk clerks for a restaurant recommendation on our first night and he said that, rather than recommending a particular restaurant, he would recommend two streets within a block of the hotel where we should wander and pick one. We ate at several in the neighborhood, one decent, and the others very good. In particular we would recommend one that is just outside the hotel. Walk out the front door and you will be facing Ristaurante La Cicala e La Roma. Try their pumpkin ravioli. We highly recommend this hotel and would stay there again.

Great location, many good restaurants and shops at walking distance and subway station half a block away. The room even small was good enough. Staff was friendly and breakfast was good. Good pick; I do reccomend it.

Hotel was very clean and friendly, breakfast was a disappointment. The best steak ive ever had was at the Baires, not far from the hotel. If you get sick of pasta and pizza's i would recomend going to the Baires but you will need plenty of money!!!!!!!!

Excellent location to explore ancient Rome on foot- close to the Colosseum, forums and Palatine Hill. The hotel is very convenient to the Cavour Metro stop and just one stop from the Termini. This was our second stay at Duca d'Alba and we recommend it. Hot breakfast buffet is good. Our room on this trip had a private balcony. Massimiliano was very helpful with our museum reservations. He and all the staff were very attentive. There are many good eateries on Via Leonina: the pizzeria across the street, the restaurant next door (red sliding door) has the best lasagna, but our favorite is the gelateria right next door! And there's a neighborhood grocer nearby on Via Boschetto with produce, food for snacks and water. We hope to be back soon!

This property was within walking distance to the colesseum and forums and many other sites. It is also within walking distance from the train station. The hotel staff was very friendly and helpful. The room could have been a bit bigger, but we were only in it for sleeping and showering so the size did not bother us. Breakfast was simple and sufficient. My wife left her wedding rings in the bathroom the morning we were flying home. The hotel staff located them and sent them to the airport with the same driver that took us to the airport. The driver made it just in time-and I never questioned the integrity of the staff. They were gracious and very helpful throughout our entire stay. We'd stay again!

Excellent staff and a very nice location for wandering in the evening and getting to most attractions. Room was very small, but this is central Rome and I was on business so was only using the room to sleep in. Would definitely stay again and recommend to anyone for a centrally located, pleasant stay. Only about 20-30 min taxi ride from Ciampino which is a fixed price of 30 Eur, so if you don't want the hassle of buses with luggage it's reasonable.

Small but adequate room, with an extremely small bathroom. The worst part was the shower - if you dropped the soap, you had to open the door in order to bend down to pick it up. And, the drain was plugged, so the base of the shower quickly filled up with water. The service was fine, the breakfasts were fine, and the hotel couldn't be in a better location. Close to the Metro and the Colosseum. Stayed in another hotel (Apollo) in the same area, and would recommend it over Duca d'Alba.

the staff were all helpful, the breakfast was good plenty of choice. The bedroom was small, but suddicient for two, as we it was only used at night. The pillowcases were changed daily which was nice. plus it is in an excellent location within walking distance of all sights. It was easy to get to fromthe airport via the metro as there is a metro station close by. On our return journey to the airport the hotel were happy to arange a taxi on our behalf which we were very pleased with.

We went to Rome by train and so we looked for a hotel near the station and near the historic center of the city. The Duca d'Alba was absolutely the best choice for visiting the monuments and museums of of historic Rome and even the way to vatican you take by foot without getting tired of walking. The hotel is very good isolated, you don't hear the noise of intensive streetlife around the hotel and the climatization works satisfying.

Well, after enough time paying "low/middle prices" for hotels all over Europe, I can say this one was great. It was our first time in Rome, we were worried of the prices, but Duca d'Alba was really nice and centrally located. The room was smallish, but I have stayed in smaller ones (Frankfurt, London, Glasgow). Overall the hotel was clean, the service was great and the stuff friendly. Big plus: they were speaking English well enough to communicate. The charges were exactly as listed, the breakfast was OK and we were offered at least two free-of-charge cappuccinos. If I have to say something bad with this review it's the fact that our room was on the back of the building and with luck of daylight. On the other hand there was no noise from the road and I could sneak at the small terrace for a smoke.

I will never stay at this hotel again. I spent 10 days in Italy and slept in 4 hotels. Every hotel I stayed in was in the same price range or cheaper than this hotel. The difference is that every hotel was much larger and cleaner than this one. The room was approximately 10x10, and this was a there double room. Bathroom was small and the walls in the room were dirty. We were lucky enough to have access throught our room to a patio. However, it was shared with a designated smoking area, so we could not leave the door open without smelling the smoke. The only positive was that the bed was decent. The location was a little sketchy. It felt like we were in the wrong side of town. We were very close to the Colosseum, and a good walk from anything else. Do not waste your time with this place. There are many other hotels in Rome that will offer more value at the same price. Don't fly to Italy onlly to be dissappointed with the hotel room.

Excellent trip. Would highly recommend this hotel. As expected they had not get the rooms right when we arrived. But the next morning they soon gave us the correct room although we had to move all of our own luggage and repack and unpack the room they gave us was excellent. Breakfasts are excellent - pleantly for all tastes. When arriving if travelling by coach to Termini Station the coach will drop you of arounf the corner, walk to your left the the Termini - the taxi rank is there infront and they charge 8Euros to the Hotel, do not take the taxis offered when you get off the coach they charge 30-40 Euros!! Do not eat if you go the the Vatican City - they do not show the prices in the cafes two cups of hot chocolate and two cakes were 23Euros. Overall great trip - I would definately go back to this hotel should I visit Rome again.

For this American traveler it was great to be located in a part of Rome with fewer tourists in the immediate vicinity, especially other English speakers, yet close to the Forum, Coliseum, Piazza Venezia and the Trastevere. The rooms were small, but that wasn't a surprise (we had read online reviews before our trip); they were clean and well serviced. The several gentlemen manning the front desk were incredibly helpful, going beyond the extra mile for our large family group on numerous occasions during the several days of our stay. If you don't mind street noise (including a bar across the alley) ask for a room with a window opening onto the alley so you can check out the action!! The small restaurant immediately next door was terrific the night the bulk of our family arrived at nearly 11 pm. They provided food, china and silverware for 15 of us to take to our rooms for a late meal, just as they were closing.

We had an excellent stay at Duca d'Alba. The service was excellent. Our room was clean and spatious. The only negative experience we had was when a jet lagged family bumbled into their room at 3:30 am and proceeded to shout to one another within their room right next door. Unfortunately, the walls were a bit too thin between rooms. However, this was, as I say our only negative experience. Considering the price, service, and location, you can not beat this deal!

Hotel location is excellent, especially for visiting the ruins. Staff was very nice and helpful. Great Irish pub across from hotel. As is typical for most European hotels, the rooms are not spacious. However, we were not spending much time in the rooms. Regarding the shower draining issue, it seems intentional. We quickly realized that the drain is made to slow drain (assuming so that guests don't leave the water running without being in the shower). Quick fix: the part that slows the drain easily pops out using your fingers. Though the draining is still not perfect it is much better. Every day the maid would put it back in the drain, and every night we would remove it. Breakfast not that great. Excellent hotel relative to price.

This hotel is just minutes away from the Colosseum, and several good restaurants. On the same street, we found a great chocolatier and nifty gourmet food shop. The rooms were tiny, as most are in Rome, unless you are paying top dollar. The staff, particularly the front desk ones, were wonderful; very accomodating with recommendations, and very helpful. We would stay there again.

The hotel is located on a small side street. We asked a restauranteur on Cavour Street for help finding the hotel. Check-in was pleasant and quick. We had a triple on the second floor overlooking the street and the Irish pub. The room was quite small and a bit cramped, but otherwise pleasant. Desk personnel were quite polite and helpful, particularly when a problem arose that required immediate overseas phone calls. Breakfast was included, and it was a full breakfast (eggs, bacon, fruit, coffee, juice, breads) and quite good. The hotel is located less than a 5 minute walk to the Forum and Coliseum, as well as some reasonably priced restaurants. We enjoyed our stay....

We had stayed for a week in London in what I thought was a fairly nice hotel, but which was very small. When we got to Rome and saw this hotel from the outside, I thought that this too was going to be crampped. However, the rooms were quite large and very comfortable. Bottom line is that we loved this hotel: People were great; Breakfast was wonderful, rooms are clean and tidy; location was tremendous -- What else can I say. The only issue was that it was hard to find. It is exactly where the map shows it, but since the road it is on is "below" the closest main street next to the hotel, we spent some time "wondering around" looking for it. I would highly recommend this hotel and you MUST eat at the Pizza/Pasta place next to it. The owner is a riot! (The Pasta "natzi" like that on the American TV Show Seinfeld). Be patient, enjoy the 1/2 carafe of wine for 2 euros and Bruessetta while you wait! PS -- the food is great but the owners is comical!

Great little hotel on a charming side street, ten minute walk to the Colosseum and Forum, and steps from the Cavour Metro stop. Small rooms, but all you need for a base for exploring Rome. Nice breakfasts and pleasant, helpful staff. They provided a crib for our baby and were friendly to our children. We'd recommend the trattoria just a few steps west for lunch and the Archette de Cavour (up the steps onto Cavour) for dinner.

Don't be put off by the first sight of the Via Leonina where the hotel is located. It is a typical Roman narrow street bounded by high properties. The hotel is in an ideal situation to walk to most of Rome's sights - The Vatican is probably the only exception and even that is within 30 minutes walking. The Coloseum is less than 10 minutes away, the Forum 5 minutes and Piazza Venezia about 10. Even Termini can be walked to in less than 15 minutes although it is slightly uphill. Cavour Metro station is within 200 metres and there are many bus services on Via Cavour The area adjacent to the hotel has many small shops and restaurants and is ideal for eating out in the evening or for having a snack in one of the many open-air cafes. The hotel is built on four floors with the breakfasting room on the ground floor. It is smart, in excellent decorative order and is cleaned to a high standard. The staff are very welcoming and when asked about train times to various destinations, quickly pulled these off the internet. The rooms tend to be 'compact', but have every expected facility. Most rooms on the fourth floor have reasonably sized balconies with tables and chairs and overlook the street - try for 401, 402, or 403. Watch for the air-conditioning as at the end of March it had been turned off The hotel is highly recommended for a budget stay in Rome and we will certainly return.

I received a verbal recommendation from a friend to stay at Duca d'Alba. It was everything he said. We were on our honeymoon, and we stayed at some very very expensive nice hotels in other parts of Italy. But in Rome, we had a nice clean room, with a very helpful staff, in a very central and convenient location. It was a good experience, and I would highly recommend the hotel to others. Great bonus...there is a lovely Scottish Pub across the street, and a chocolate shop down the block.

We loved how close the hotel was to the subway system. From the airport we took the train, then the subway from the train to the hotel, and then only walked a short distance to the hotel. From the hotel, we either took the subway to sightsee or walked. The location of the hotel made it easy to do either one. The only thing that we really didn't like was that the desk clerks smoked, so the lobby was always filled with smoke.

Arriving late at night after a harrowing taxi ride from Fumuicino, we were welcomed by name and our luggage taken to the room. It was very pleasing as it was the first time I had made a reservation by internet. Everything seemed just as advertised and the breakfast was better than expected. After touring Italy, we returned to the Duca d'Alba and would rate the breakfast as the best we received while in Italy. Lots of fresh fruit as well as a fresh fruit compote, plus a cooked breakfast if you wished. Cafe lattes or cappucinos were made on request. Overall, I would recommend this hotel and would stay there again. The only down side was the Irish pub next door-- noisy until midnight, although they served excellent Guinness.

I enjoyed this hotel, the service was excellent and the location (near the antiquities) was crucial to my enjoyment of my stay. My only real complaint was that my room was very small, but I think that it was to be expected given its quite reasonable cost and how close it was to the heart of the ancient city. The hotel is very close to a Metro stop and within walking distance of the Termini. It is located in an alley of sorts which is not especially attractive, but the Colosseum is basically around the corner. There are some surprising good restaurants in the "alley", too. The gentlemen at the front desk spoke excellent English and were most helpful and polite at all times. I would recommend this hotel to anybody who is looking for reasonably priced accomodations close to the Colosseum and the Fora and who is not planning to spend much time in the room except for breaks between long walks and to sleep. And, why would anybody go to Rome to hang around their hotel room?

On a very hot day, we had no air conditioning. We were finally given a fan, but because one of our party could not tolerate the noise factor, we had to keep the windows closed. It was quite miserable. It is a lovely hotel, and services are excellent, but the lack of A/C in that room was dreadful.

Unfortunately the air-conditioning blew during a very hot weekend in Rome and we were left sleepless for three nights. The desk staff was cordial and probably did their best to supply us with fans, but it really was an unacceptable situation. Also the room was rather cramped and dowdy, really not at all on par with the other rooms on our Italy trip we had for about the same price.

The hotel is very nice - rooms are a bit small but typical of many European hotels. The location is great - a short walk from the Coliseum, and the neighborhood is really nice with a lot of good places to eat. The staff is extremely friendly and helpful. The one thing that could have been better was the air conditioning - we stayed here during August, and the room never got as cool as we would have liked.

Duca d'Alba was perfect for what we needed. It was clean, pleasant and conveniently located to the metro and city sights. The staff were helpful in providing suggestions and assistance with getting around the city. The breakfast was hearty and good, but the coffee was excellent!

We arrived in Rome, in the middle of a heat wave. Our room was very hot,and we were told that it would take a half hour or so for the air conditioning to become effective. It never did,so we stayed only one night instead of four nights. We spoke to other guests at the hotel, who were equally dissatisfied. The staff at the hotel never really admitted that there was a problem, and tried to make excuses.

My friend had stayed there before, so we knew it would be good. Although other Americans complained loudly about the air-conditioning, our room was fine. Great location for getting to the metro and both airports.

The hotel was better than we expected with respect to location (outstanding) and service. The room and breakfast were very good. Only complaint is air conditioning which was essentially non-existent. Very helpful staff, courteous and professional. Recommend for great walking distance to most sights.

Excellent location to see old Rome. Good quality hotel, be aware of the price agreed and the price presented at check in. A taxi to this area of Rome from Fumicino airport should not cost more than e40. Just a word of warning for unaware travellers

A lovely hotel situated in old part of Rome. Ideal for those travelling by foot, difficult to access by car via maze of narrow one-way streets. No dropping-off area outside either so street is blocked while you unload.

The hotel was in a great location and the air-conditioned room was much appreciated. The breakfasts were good and the staff was knowledgeable. The rooms were very clean and well-appointed. The only drawback was the size of the rooms....in the case of my sister- and brother-in-law, who were traveling with two kids, there was precious little room left once the cots had been opened and prepared.

Staff were very accomodating and the breakfast and reading areas were quite nice. We had a 2-person and a 3-person room, both of which were quite cramped for space. The 2-person room was well designed for the tiny space, but the shower (the only water-tight shower we had in Italy) was so small that you could hardly bend over to pick up a dropped soap bar. Both of our rooms were near the elevator and other guests awakened us every night/morning, but that's not really the hotel's fault. Light under the doors was a problem, however, but easily solved with a blanket. Excellent firm beds. It was very expensive for what we received, but that was true at all places where we stayed. You can walk (downhill) from train station to hotel, but it's several blocks (we did it). Subway is very convenient and Colosseum and Forum are a fairly short walk. Neighborhood is marginal with much anti-USA graffiti, but several restaurants are nearby and nobody hassled us. In fact, all we encountered were very nice. All in all, it was so-so compared to Franklin Feel the Sound (near Vatican), another (more expensive) hotel we used during our trip.

In June 2004, my husband and I stayed at this hotel as the final destination on our honeymoon. The hotel staff was very friendly and welcoming. The breakfast was wonderfully set up and had much to offer. The location was excellent - blocks from the Colossuem and Forum and within walking distance from the metro. My only concern was the area - it seemed a little bit sketchy. I was not sure if we were in a bad area or not. However, we never felt unsafe. The room itself was quite small - not much room for anything but the suitcases. Otherwise, the hotel was very clean. We enjoyed our stay.

I was very happy with the Duca D'Alba, and would stay there again. The rooms were very clean, and the bathroom was good-sized, and well organized with plenty of shelf space. The front desk staff was very helpful, and the hotel is in a great location. We could see the Via Cavour metro entrance from the entrance to the hotel. We could easily walk to see ancient Rome sites like the forums and the colliseum.

An incredibly cramped room with poor ventilation made for a very stuffy stay. Noise from loud guests (and a dog) in other rooms came through the very thin walls. Workers demolishing a wall to install fire prevention equipment were so loud there was no way to rest for hours when I first arrived. Staff was gracious and helpful, but overall, this was very over priced for what was provided

My sister and I enjoyed our stay very much. The location was wonderful...good eating, internet, small grocery, all close by. We were able to walk everywhere from there, and did. The room was very quiet. We were hoping for a terrace but our timing wasn't the best and they could not reserve one for us. The room was expensive but so are all the rooms of 3-star status in Ancient Rome. Bottom line, I would happily stay there again and recommend it to anyone.

I'd recommend the Duca d'Alba Hotel to anyone. It's close to the metro station, for links out of the city, and easy walking distance to all the main attractions. Good local restaurants, and very professional service in the hotel, but perhaps the best thing is the quietness of the soundproofed rooms. It's not a big flash hotel, but it puts on a good show in a small space.

Reception and personnel in the hotel was very polite, friendly and helpful during our whole stay. The hotel has recently been renovated with good taste. All the areas in the hotel, including the room, were very clean. The room was not very big, but quite sufficient to our needs. The room was cleaned and all towels changed daily, which was nice. The room was very quiet and had quite new soundproof windows. We had no kind of trouble in getting asleep or with any noises from the streets. Breakfast was very generous and included free choise of tea/coffee, several types of bread, cereals, yoghurts and juices, bacon, eggs, ham, cheese, fruits, etc. Via Leonina is a narrow street and perhaps not the cleanist street in Rome. Cars, motorcycles and even small buses are using it quite frequently. Actually you have to be somewhat careful, when coming out of the hotel. The location of the hotel was quite good: just about 5-10 minutes walking distance from Coloseum and other attractions. At least we felt the area to be safe for a tourist. Cavour underground station is about 100 meters from the hotel. All in all, if we are going to visit Rome again, we certainly would like to stay in Duca d'Alba again.

Brunch on Sunday was somewhat uncoordinated. Some of the foods ran out and were replaced piecemeal.. Quality was quite good, though. I thought the quality of the hotel for the price was excellent. The Duca d'Alba is a very nice hotel near Old Rome and many other sites. We had rooms on the top floor, both with lovely terraces. Unfortunately, both were at the front of the hotel which is on a small side street that has a VERY noisy pub on the corner. Despite really excellent double insulated doors, the street noise was really something to contend with. Our only other disappointment was with the personnel. We found them very cool, rather than friendly, very business-like rather than warmly helpful. The other services, however, were excellent. Extremely fine breakfast each morning with eggs, bacon, cold cuts, and an assortment of breads and rolls. Excellent location!!! We would definitely stay at this hotel again.

We enjoyed our week long stay. We were three to one room - three single beds; the room was small, but that was not unexpected. Bath was very nice. We were quite comfortable. Breakfast was very good (loved the chocolate spread for the croisants!) The hotel is an easy walking distance from the Collosseum and Forum - where we spent about three of our seven days. If you are a GOOD walker, the rest of the city is accessible on foot; public transportation is very convenient, and taxis arrive in about three minutes when called. The staff was very helpful and cordial. We would definitely book there again.

We very much enjoyed our stay at Hotel Duca D'Alba. The hotel is small and quiet in an excellent location less than a mile from the Coloseum and The Forum and just a block from the Cavour metro stop. Our room had a balcony and we heard no street noise at all. The breakfasts were hearty (great eggs) and they even kept it open late for us. We did not need any recommendations as we booked our own tours, so can't comment on the hotel's help in that area. We would definitely stay there again.

A very nice hotel. We returned for an un-planned last night at the end of our trip and the staff at Duca D'Alba took care of us without difficulty, in fact they quoted the same rate and gave us a upgraded room. The rooms were very small, but then we didn't go to Rome to stay in the hotel room. Location is a plus. A very short walk to the Roman Forum attractions and just 200m to the nearby subway station which gets you to the Vatican in 10 or 15 minutes. We would definetly recommend the Duca D'Allba to friends.

We found our stay at the Duca d'alba most enjoyable. The staff was extremely accommodating and all spoke english well. Some friends stayed at another hotel in Rome and had difficulity because the staff spoke very little english. The staff helped us with finding good places to eat and with transportation. Very clean and quiet. A small intimate hotel, centrally located so that most places were within walking distance. For the price, you can not beat the place. The only drawback being the size of the room was a little on the small size, but certainly manageable. All in all I would highly reccommend this hotel.

Sorry to point out a problem with an overall excellant value property, but our bathroom had lots of black mold on the marble around the tub and running around edge of tub to the floor. Great location, but not noisy Great staff - friendly, competent, courteous Room (atleast the single) was tiny, but neat and clean and had all the needed amenities. Much better value than business hotel brands - I was travelling on business plus extra days for leisure. Gives you a flavor for Rome, since you can walk out and find dozens of great restaurants, plazas, gelaterias etc. I'll stay here when I return.
