On one hand the hotel doesn't make good first impression. The street seems kind of shady and the hotel inside is kind of old or let's say it's old. However... if you look at this hotel from the point of you of the location, this is probably the best situated hotel ever. Not only it is super close to buses and subway, you can make it on foot to many places, but most importantly it is a central street for AMAZING STREET PARTIES with SAMBA, BOSSA NOVA and other Brazilian music, food ,artisan venders and all the CARIOCAS ( habitant of RIO) that happens on Friday and Saturday night. The party goes until 5-6 AM, so you will be just next to your room and won't have to worry about expensive cab to beaches area where most of the people usually look for the hotels ( ALL GOT IT WRONG). In addition there is the most amazing piece of art on the street , called the “ Santa Teresa Mosiac Stairs” Escadaira de Santa Teresa de Jorge Selarón ( who lives there close and you can meet him), so once you’ll see it, you will feel privilege to live on that street. It's definitely value for money if you don't need fancy room. It's simple, but there is a bed, shower and even cable TV. Unless you want to spend all day on the beach ( which in Winter) may not be the case, STAY HERE. The STAFF is helpful and will help you with all the questions you may have. My advise is to stay here if you’re in Rio to enjoy the city and not the room.

The hotel is more a motel. The fotos dont have anything to do with the real situation... Free cables even in the shower, dirty walls, a dirty bed...

The hotels in Rio are very expensive so this hotel was the only one that I could find in a central location that was not too expensive . The hotel is very old , tired and has a musty smell in the room . There are no elevators .It is near the subway and buses .It is in walking distance of downtown . However , if you are going on a day tour , few companies will pick you up here . I had to take the subway about 5 or 6 stops ( about 20 minutes ) to a Copacabana Beach hotel to pick up my tours . The hotel is on a very narrow street in a not very nice neighbourhood . I always wore a moneybelt and had to be attentive of who was around me . I had no incidents . The hotel is a great location on weekends . You can walk to hear live music and samba bands on the streets for free . The streets in the neighbourhood of Lapa are filled with people and it is a non-stop party atmosphere . I can't imagine what Carnival would be like because it looked like I would imagine Carnival to be like on both weekends that I was there . On the weekends there are so many people on the street that you feel safer than on weekdays . I was in Rio for 12 nights and I didn't want a huge hotel bill . If I went to Rio for 2 or 3 nights I would choose a nicer hotel in a better area of the city . On the other hand, you are really among the people and know that you are in a foreign culture here . English is very limited in this part of the city . Most of the restaurants and cafes cater to the locals as opposed to tourists .It is far away from the world of Ipanema or Copacabana but both these areas can be reached by subway in about 20 minutes . In summary , if you want a cheap place to lay your head in Rio , I would recommend that you not spend a lot of time at the hotel or in the neighbourhood of the hotel except to sleep . The hotel is quite quiet but English is limited at the front desk except 7AM - 2PM .You must be an adventurous spirit and not expect 3 or 4 star accommodation .

quite small rooms, would need renovation, air conditioning very loud - it is not possible to sleep with running AC, quite poor area, but nevertheless relatively save, very close to center, some of the staff could even speak English, W-Lan available, breakfast in another hotel nearby
