Reggio D Calabria is a letdown. Clearly they have never traveled to other coastal cities. The museum proves civilazation began 4000 years ago, sadly, has not advanced much.

We chose this hotel because we thought it would be convenient to the ferry from Reggio to Messina, Sicily. It is next to a ferry terminal but it turned out that it was primarily for truck ferries and the best car ferry was 10 km back up the road. This was not a problem in and of itself, but the staff at the hotel could not really explain the ferries in a coherent way (we got the story from the manager of the restaurant where we had dinner). The hotel itself is clean and modest, not a bad place to stay and while it is not close to the best ferries to Messina, it is a short walk from Reggio's exteremely nice lungomare, with its pretty views across Strait of Messina to Sicily, nice resturants and wine bars.

This is by far the worst hotel I have ever stayed in. In particular, we got a taxi from Vila St Giovanni which cost EUR20. We thought this was excessive so asked in the hotel how much it should be. THey thought we were looking to book a taxi and said it would be EUR70 - "but one of their drivers would do it at a special price of EUR50"!!!!! Beyond that, the room was very basic and there is nothing anywhere near the hotel. If I had paid EUR50 per night for this hotel, I would still feel it was far too expensive.
