I was at the Open Gate with my daughter and son-in-law from Oct 3-6 2012 and wished we could have stayed longer. The view from our room (all rooms have a see view)was breath taking, and what can I say about the food except that with all our travels in Italy, we were not able to have as good meal as at the Open Gate. Home made, delicious food that tastes so good you don't want to brush your teeth before going to bed to keep the taste in your mouth! LOL. We recommended the Open Gate to other travelers we met during our trip and they fully enjoyed their stay as well. You won't regret it!

Our room had a balcony that opened up to a spectacular ocean view of the Amalfi Coast. The restaurant was very casual, the staff were extremely friendly and helpful, and the food was excellent. The hotel is located in a quiet spot between Positano and Praiano, and there's an 800 year old building within walking distance which is being used as an art studio. The artist was very friendly; he gave us a free tour of the building and let my children pet his two goats. We would efinitely stay here again.

The Open Gate Hotel in Praino was a pleasant place to stay. The rooms have little balconies with spectacular seaview. They are nicely decorated and clean. Our bed was made a double by putting two single beds together, which wasn't very comfortable. The hotel is approx. 1 km away from Praino. It is better to stay out of the town, but you have to walk that 1km (through tunnel, too). The only minus of the hotel except being away from the town is that it is right on the main road so it will be very loud during the summer months when the road is busy.

Beautiful location. Some free parking available on-site. Close to buses. No wifi internet but internet access available at reception. Excellent restaurant on site. On a typically windy, narrow Italian cliffside road with spectacular scenery. Once you get your car into the carpark leave it there and catch buses.

Our family enjoyed the hotel very much, especially the balcony off our room. The view to the sea was so gorgeous we set our alarm to get up early to enjoy extra time on our balcony day of checkout, only to sleep past the alarm. We were so sorry to spend our time sleeping and missing the delicious croissants and coffee in the morning, however the thoughtful and lovely staff at Open gate sent us with a packed breakfast as we rushed to catch our bus. We would certainly stay at this lovely place again.

Lovely hotel with the most incredible views. Very spacious room for 4 with a balcony overlooking the ocean. No lift, so be prepared to carry your bags up stairs, but well worth it. Bus stop right outside, so easy to get around the coast. We found good restaurants in Priano about 1 km walk from Open Gate. If you catch a Sita bus from Sorrento, ask them to drop you at Open gate as they are about 1km from the Priano town stop. Would definately stay there again as it is a bit quieter that Positano and Amalfi, but very easy to get to those towns by bus.

this is a pretty standard european hotel. the room was no frills, but confortable, clean as could be and with a view from the large patio to die for. the bathroom was adequate, there was an abundance of towels and toiletries and hot water. we would arrive late in the evening and could always get a dessert or a drink and the breakfast was delicious. the only negative (and it is only cosmetic) is that i would paint the exterior. the walls between our room and the neighbor's showed some wear, but if this is as bad as it gets, how truly bad can it be. don't expect plush american luxury, just a good value for the buck. and a location that is unbeatable.

Stayed at Open Gate as a base for exploring Amalfi Coast and it worked well...we had a car. Loved everything about the hotel but the beds were new and rock hard..we changed room but little improvement. Staff were sympathetic but couldn't really help. Apart from that, good value with large rooms, good air-con, good breakfast, very nice restaurant at night...great food and very good value. No internet. Hotel on busy Positano-Amalfi road, no problem if you use the air-con at night. Unfortunately wouldn't stay here again if beds were the same.

This hotel is just what I expected from the description and price/quaility for an Italian hotel. The views were outstanding and it was just across the street from the bus stop. We were a family of four traveling and if you have traveled through europe much you know it isn't easy to get a room for 4 without having to get two seperate rooms and pay for 2 rooms which adds up quickly. We had a double bed (two twins pushed together which is typical in europe) and two seperate twins. Just a warning which has nothing to do with the hotel. But the mosquitoes in the Amalfi area are the worst we have ever encountered. They are stealthy and you never see of feek them but the leave you with bite that look like burn blisters. So bring your insect repellant if you will be traveling the Amalfi Coast.

This property was one of the best we experienced in our 14-day stay in Italy. The owners were wonderful and the hotel and restaurant ran like a well-oiled machine. The property was spotless and had a very good restaurant; there was even had gelato on site! The views were spectacular and there was parking!! The road run betweens the property and the coast so there was some road noise that subsided after dark and nothing that ear-plugs did not care for. The hotel has an amazing location on the Amalfi coast. The room had a beautiful view over the ocean, and was decorated nicely. Our meal was reasonable considering the power was out, but found better value at other hotels. Being non-smokers, we found the heavy smell of cigarette smoke in the lobby overbearing, but in the room the air quality was better. Overall, we had a pleasant stay, and the break from the very stressful drive was welcomed!

We loved the friendly, welcoming, but laid back atmosphere of this hotel. Although very little English spoken, every effort was made to put guests at ease. Food at restaurant was excellent, as was service. Spectacular balcony views uninterrupted by passing traffic. If driving, because of need to concentrate on winding narrow road, it is possible to miss hote. As soon as first sign appears regarding entry to Praiano from the south, suggest the driver travels slowly and carefully to avoid missing hotel sign.

We enjoyed our stay at Open Gate. The staff was friendly and extremely helpful, especially when our daughter needed to see a doctor and he arrived less than 10 minutes after the phone call was made. The owner drove me to the pharmacy in Praiano to get the needed medication and then waited to drive me back. We liked the small hotel experience and the feel of being well-cared for by the family who runs Open Gate. We suggest that you skip the Esmeralda Grotta experience. It wound up costing euro 20/each, instead of the euro 10/each as advertised, because of needing to pay for 2 boat rides--one TO the grotta and another INSIDE the grotta. What a shocking disappointment! With 10 people, we paid euro 200 for this 10 minute experience. And for what? They have taken a lovely natural setting and added a cheesy nativity scene in the water calling it a 'miracle.' Save your money!

The view was astounding but the room was cramped, the bed was the best ironing board my wife has ever used, (far too hard), and the bathroom required some urgent repairs with live wires exposed from the single power point. The shower was not that good either. On the positive side, other than the view, the hospitality and manner of the staff was excellent, service at the restaurant very good (especially from the elderly gentleman-owner) and the room cleanliness could not be faulted. While the location of the hotel is a little out of town, it was walkable and very good for us with access to the beach also within walking distance.

Being an American who has lived in Italy for roughly 2 years, there are a few things I have come to expect. First, many Italians assume that because I hold an American passport I don’t speak a word of Italian. Second, because of assumption #1, I am frequently the victim of what I like to call “Foreigner Tax.” Throughout the country, some hotels, stores, restaurants, cafes, and bars take the opportunity to add an additional few Euros or attempt to charge the same amount for a lesser quality item. To my disappointment, Hotel Open Gate was no exception. I am a very experienced traveler of Italy, and of Europe in general, and am well acquainted with quality vs. price in hotels, as well as what constitutes as a normal price at a restaurant, especially in the region of Naples. I wish I could properly review the Hotel Open Gate, because that is where I booked my room, but we were placed in another building up the street called Residenza Benvenuti. Our hosts, with the assumption that we did not speak the language, discussed openly in front of us, that they were changing the foreigners’ room (our room) for a group of Italians. As we arrived in the first room we understood why. Hidden behind curtains, the seaside windows were broken and taped together. Meanwhile, the bedside lamps lacked shades, the toilet had been used since the last cleaning, the bathroom window had no latch and would not stay shut, and the whole room was in generally shabby condition. Most importantly, there was no private terrace as advertised on the web page. After a discussion following our complaints, our hosts reluctantly changed our room to one with a terrace (but not a private one), while still at the lower end hotel. We were also grossly overcharged for a meal that we ate at the restaurant. We ended up being charged at least ten Euros more then the prices stated on the menu. We both watched as the hotel manager punched in the items we had eaten and overcharged us for each item of f

If you are looking at this hotel you have found a diamond in the rough, what I mean by that is that its decor might be a little tired and the beds might be a little hard. All that dose not matter at all as the restaurant is fantastic (I would recommend going half board), the staff are friendly and extremely helpful ( especially Stephanie), and the scenery is spectacular, however if you have vertigo close your eyes. There is no doubt in my mind that if I was to go back to Praiano I would stay at the Open Gate hotel. One last piece of advice is don't travel on Sunday as the buses are sparse and don't on any circumstances take a taxi as it will cost you an arm and a leg and probable a vital organ as well.

Open Gate is a small, family-run operation, with all the attendant benefits. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, the staff is friendly and helpful, the rooms and the building have character (tile floors, different furniture in each room, etc.), and the financial transactions are conducted honestly and professionally. The hotel's location on the main coast road means that there is some traffic noise. We found, however, that this disadvantage was offset by the the advantages of a fabulous view of the coast and sea, house-prepared meals (the cornetti in the morning and the pizza in the evening are particularly good), a comparatively reasonable price, attentive service, and a great general atmosphere. The location itself has one advantage as well: it's a bit outside the heart of Praiano and thus, for the Amalfi coast, in a pleasantly remote (though still convenient) location. Buses run between Praiano and Positano as well as up and down the entire coast, and there are stops very close to the hotel. We were with our three-year-old son, and we found that the Open Gate staff was most happy to have him. That was icing on the cake for us, a traveling family. When we return to the Amalfi coast, we will definitely stay at Open Gate again.

The room was fairly basic but had a fantastic view. The restaurant food was excellent although we felt rushed a couple of times as we hadn't finished our first course when the second arrived. Very welcoming - would stay there again although the road is quite noisy.

Do yourself a favor and reqest the 'villa'. For only 40 euros more a night you live like a millionaire! Trust me, you'll love it! Nothing but, sea, sky, and tranquility. We tanned nude on our private terrace!

The beds are terrible - especially the singles. They are "roll-aways" that sag. The room was promised to have AC but we couldn't get it going nor did the proprietors help get it started when we asked. We phoned front desk 2 times. The mosquitos made it difficult to stay cool b/c we couldn't leave our windows open. (We were there in June.) The tile floors are gorgeous. ALSO, this place is NOT near the village and walking - and driving - to places is difficult. Open Gate is on the inside or mountain side of the road, not the cliff or ocean side. This makes it difficult to get to the beaches, etc. Traffic is crazy along this coast - life-risking!

This was one of 7 hotels we stayed at during our 4-week travels (as a family) in Italy. The room was fine (about average) but the balcony and the view were amazing. Breakfast was good, served on the patio with a beautiful view. Staff were very helpful and pleasant. The on-site restaurant was excellent, overlooking the water with a great view, and reasonably priced. (Because of logistics in this area, we found that we had dinner at their restaurant 3 of the 4 nights we were there. One of us had a nut allergy, and they were exceptionally helpful in meeting our needs.) This was a beautiful quiet central location to explore the coast from. It is right on the main and almost only road in the area, so it was handy for catching the local bus at the doorstep. Although right on the road, traffic was not a problem and certainly at night there is very little traffic.

A pleasent family run hotel where every one was exceptionally friendly. The rooms were generaly clean, however many small items in rooms needed fixing. No plug in sink, electrics in our two rooms had sockets falling off wall and wiring to bedside lamps held together with insulation tape. Not all rooms have air conditioning so if you was expecting it you may get a surprise. Even if you room is fitted with it you will find out that they do not switch it on until you pay an extra charge which is not listed on the web site. Friendly nature of staff makes up for a lot and the restaurant offered good value for money meals which were very nice. Views from rooms and balcony were quite exceptional. If they could just fix up the few faults in the rooms (especially the electrics!) and not charge extra for the necessary air conditioning then this would be an excellent recommendation hotel. Prices for the type of hotel are high, but in this area they all seem to be.

The owner's niece was very welcoming and always ready to help. The rooms are bright and clean with an outstanding view of the ocean. The bus stops right at the hotel and it is very convenient for going to Posatino without having to take your car. I will recommend this hotel to anyone.

Open Gate is set in a fantastic location which is complemented by the helpfulness and service of the family who run it. The Amalfi Coast is on your doorstep and public transport links are good if you do not have a car. I thoroughly recommend eating in the hotel restaurent at least once as it is all family cooked - this was one of the best meals I had in Italy.

Great fanily run hotel which has a real Italian feel. Amazing views from all rooms and the restaurant is outside on the edge of the cliff.

One of the friendliest and most welcoming hotels we've stayed in. Foods was excellent as were the views across the bay. We booked a budget flight to Naples and hired a car, the drive was around 1½ hours with magnificent views. It was our honeymoon, so we wanted somewhere quiet - Hotel Open Gate was a great choice. Well worth a visit...

Très bon accueil. Chambre monacale, meublée avec le strict minimum. Eclairage ridiculement faible.

Excellent value for an Amalfi Coast hotel. The staff (a large family) were wonderful - welcoming, helpful and charming. The restaurant at the hotel is excellent and from the day we arrived, everyone in my group (6 of us) were taken care of and treated great! The rooms were simple but spacious, and all 4 of our rooms faced the water - beautiful views! Praiano is a lovely, small village in between the much busier Amalfi and Positano, but you can easily reach either location. We had rental cars and the driving was an experience that we enjoyed - but buses are available as well. Our hosts also showed us their villa that was available to rent - and I would certainly come back and stay there - it was charming!
