This was our first visit and we would never consider staying in another hotel if we returned. The front desk staff members were the absolute best, friendly, knowledgeable, efficient, resourceful, creative and good at solving problems and issues. The view was beautiful. We were in sort of a junior suite, and the only thing more fabulous would have been a terrace from which to view the town. But it was perfect, and this is truly a first class hotel. The breakfast was outstanding, too!

We loved the hotel and the area. The price was very good and the service at the hotel top-notch. The breakfast was marvelous and plentiful; and sitting on the large balcony each morning added to the atmosphere. Portovenere is wonderful. The entire Liguria Coast was some of the most beautiful land and water we have ever seen. We are planning to return next year. Friendly and competent staff. Clean rooms. Great air conditioning. Beware, the laundry arrangements could take 48 hours to return clothes and no laundromat in the town. Take enough clothes or wash in the sink. One tip: have parking arrangements made before you drive there or experience the 4 mile round the loop trip that I did. Parking is expenseive and the spaces are few. I would recommend travel by train to La Spezia then a bus to the hotel. Buses run about every 20 minutes. In the town there is a free bus that makes the loop to save you from walking. When it stops just board. However, we enjoyed the exercise and the experience of being outside near the water so we walked a lot.

The bed linens and bathrooms were clean. However, the room (mostly the carpets) where not. On both our stays the air conditioning functioned very poorly. While it was very hot during our stay, the other hotels we stayed at had great air conditioning and functioned well. The maid was very rude waking us up by banging on our door to clean our room even though we had hung out a "do not disturb sign." We were sleeping late and throwing her off schedule. Breakfast was yanked away (the bread basket while I was walking towards it to get a serving of bread). The elevator did not work one day. For the price, the value was not there for us.

There is a real problem of parking in the summer. Once your car parked in a reserved parking area which is in 3-4 km distance from the hotel you´ll be lucky to take a boat from Portovenere to visit Cinqua terre. A view from the terrace of this hotel is really beautifull and a breakfest generous. However, Portovenere is not made for beach lovers. There is no French TV program.

A REAL JOY. GREAT LOCATION. OK, SO WE HAD TO HAVE LAST AVAILABLE TWIN ROOM, A JUNIOR SUITE WITH TERRACE AND MAGIC VIEW BUT WORTH EVERY EURO. ALL CINQUE TERRE EASILY ACCESSIBLE AND IN FAR MORE COMFORT AND PEACE, AND WE DID WALK A LOT, I RECOMMEND PORTOVENERE AND THIS HOTEL AS A PERFECT BASE, ALL YEAR.

This is right on the port, great access to everything in Portovenere and the shuttle boat to Cinque Terra. To get to the hotel is difficult, we caught bus from La Spezia, but it is meant to be out of the way, so that's expected. Rooms were lovely and the town is even better. This place is a wonderful stay right in the heart of Portovenere, and the breakfast is delicious with all you can eat on the patio outside.

Lovely hotel with excellent views, Friendly staff, The hotel should let know the people who are coming by car that the parking for the hotel is right before you get to the hotel, and also it should have good signs. Since there is one way street around we had to drive about 4 miles to come back and enter the parking. But it is a great hotel.

Grand Hotel Portovenere is an excellent hotel to stay at while in the Cinque Terre area. Portovenere is a charming seaside village with colourful buildings and a great west facing rocky point to enjoy sunsets over the Med. The rooms and other facilities were excellent. Breakfast was extensive and served in a great room with a terrace overlooking the water. The dining room also served great food at dinner. The staff were helpful and professional. While in this area, make sure to walk the Cinque Terre. We took the boat in front of the hotel to Monterosso al Mare and started our walk from there. This way you walk the most difficult part of the trail first. We then took a boat back in Riomaggiore. Another nice daytrip is a to go to Santa Margherita Ligure and Portofino. We took the train from La Spezia and enjoyed the experience. Santa Margherita is a very nice little seaside town. Definitely would recommend the Grand Hotel Portovenere. It is a bit pricey but well worth it for the location and service.

Pesce freschissimo

Had a great stay as it is a in a beautiful location. The room service was amazing - they always did a great job. Room we stayed in overlooked the water and was nice and spacious. The front desk staff were not particular helpful or overly friendly. I saw the front desk lady smile for the first time when we paid the bill on departure. They are ok but you have to push for information, they will not go out of their way to tell you things. On arrival, we were not shown to our rooms nor given help with our bags. They just gave us the key and pointed us the lift. However I would recommend staying here as it was a great location. You don't need to use the front desk staff for too much anyway. Note that it is a bit of a hike from La Spezia to Portovenere. We got off at the train station, then walked to a bus stop in La Spezia (hard with our bags), then got on a bus to Portovenere.

A wedding party was held the night of our stay, on the outside balcony below our room. We were not informed of the wedding party, but was informed the next morning that it was booking the day before. A live band played until 12:47 in the morning, followed by shouting until 1:15. Complaints to the night mangement were useless. After complaining to the day management we were given a reduction in rate of the room. I would not recomend this hotel due to the lack of concern for their clients comfort and seemingly great concern for the monetary reward they received for the addition of a wedding party.

While I was parking the vehicle my wife started the check in process. We supplied our confirmation to the receptionist and was told that there would be an additional 60 euro charge for my children ages 11 & 13. I selected a junior suite and paid a premium for that reason. The confirmation included the room charge which was basically ignored by the receptionist. We could have selected to leave the hotel, but we would have been charged the entire amount due to the room guarentee provision. I have filed this exception with American Express. On another note - I parked in the adjacent lot which is run it appears by a third party. I parked for one day only and was cgarged 30 euros. I believe this is somewhat excessive. You would not pay that amount in New York City. I believe the real estate values in Manhattan are a bit higher than in Portovenere! Final Note - I travel extensively both domestically and worldwide. I am also an executive in the hospitality industry and am well versed in the policies and operations of hotels. I understand the need at times to charge for additional occupants, but this should not have been one of those times!

Absolutely no parking if you arrive anytime before 8pm, then you have to park on the street for the princely sum of 12 euros. The room we had was very old, and clearly hadnt been updated or modernised since the hotel first opened about 15 years ago. The shower was tiny. Walls also quite thin as we could hear people in other rooms and doors constantly slamming. Absolutely not worth the money (we felt sick paying for such a sub-standard room), even though Portovenere is a pretty place, would recommend it as a day trip only.

This hotel would have to be our favourite that we stayed in during our 3 week holiday across Italy. The Grand Hotel was beautiful and conveniently located right in front of the marina where our boat dropped us off in Portovenere. It is easy to access which is especially convenient if you have heavy suitcases. The views from the breakfast area are magnificent. I would recommend it to everyone and we thought the price was extremely reasonable.

This hotel suffered from: - unfriendly and rude catering staff - poor decor - poor food (we had breakfast only) - only marginally helpful front of house staff - grafiti by the lift in the main reception (!) - hot water unreliable The advantages were: - brilliant location Overall, we were really very disapointed with this hotel, which for the price, offered poor value for money. This was in stark contrast to other hotels we stayed in for the same level of rates.

We enjoyed our stay very much except for 2 issues which, fortunately, were overcome by the end of the first day. One relates to signage. There seemed little or no indication to drivers that the hotel was where it is: No sign appeared visible from the road and, as the one street is a long one-way loop, with no stopping and, frequently no parking nearby, one could circle many times (as I did) before finding it. Also there is no place to pull off the road to register and get information regarding the parking. Though advertised, the parking arrangements were NOT available and I had to park on the street a mile or two away until a place was available nearer the hotel late in the evening.

The layout of the room was a bit odd, but certainly spacious enough. Breakfast was very nice, but hard-cooked eggs would have been a good protein source. The coffee was very good, when you added the hot milk. The lattes were not very hot, so stick with coffee/hot milk combo. Fresh fruit would be another nice addition. Great location and views. Wonderful little town.

Portovenere has got to be one of the best places we have visited. it was simply superb; the village itself was like something out of a postcard and a million miles away from the nightmare package resort holiday that we wanted to steer well clear of. It is a fantastic base to visit the cinque terre from and in conclusion- we'll be back! The hotel was spotless. We had a lovely terrace on the top floor (i would recommend staying on the top floor at the back for some peace and quiet if thats what you're after as you still get a lovely view of the sea!)the main gripe we had was a small one- that most of the fruit for breakfast was tinned; the food for the evening meal was passable but we had better meals at a restaurant called tre torri just up the hill. Also the showers were tiny. Overall though, the hotel was lovely; had great character, lovely treatments in the spa and the most perfect location imaginable- totally unspoilt

The hotel is really overpriced for the quality of service, environment etc. Breakfast was rubbish - we stay in many hotels and this was the worst. Everything seemed very old fashioned and in need of a real update. Reception service was fine (not brilliant) but the rest of the hotel felt like a bit of a 70's ghost town. Sorry - but we won't be returning or recommending...

We enjoyed our stay tremendously. We stipulated a "room with a view," (which we highly recommend), and we got it. After visiting Cinque Terra villages, our initial decision to stay just outside in Portovenere proved to be the smart one. The ferry-boat-to-villages taxi was right outside the hotel.

Only issue I had with this property was that the website did not explain that they don't turn on a/c until late May. We had a seaside room that had spectacular view but the wind was just not blowing in right direction to get breeze into room. It got quite hot in room even early in May. I told Staff that they should make a portable fan available. They agreed and said they would suggest at meeeting. Food was excellent.

This was an unattractive hotel. The lift was tiny and was the slowest ever encountered. As we were on the 5th floor this was a serious disadvantage. Our room was very small even though described as a junior suite. There was another even smaller room with a camp bed. For our last 2 days the lavatory made a high pitched, continous squeel. On our final night we had to be moved down the corridor to get away from it.A very disappointing ,ordinary hotel which is a shame as Portovenere is a gem.

The location of this hotel is perfect. It's set right on the harbour. We had a room with a sea view which was fantastic. The rooms were very big and cleaned on a daily basis. The parking at the hotel is quite expensive €15 per day, however you can't park anywhere in Portovenere without paying a fee. The breakfast was good, plenty of choice and plenty of food which was served until 10am. I wouldn't consider this hotel a 4 star, the decor of the rooms are quite outdated and the public areas could do with some renovation. Its a great base for visiting the Cinque Terre, the ferries run up and down the coast all day. The cost of the ferries is a bit more expensive from Portovenere - €19 per day for a return trip.

This should not be a 4 star hotel. It seems there is a big difference between the quality of hotels on the coast and in the cities. The staff was friendly and knowledgeable, and breakfast was decent. Pulizia delle camere scadente, inoltre l'arredo tende all'usura e andrebbe sicuramente rinnovato.

We loved Portovenere and the view of the town and port was just beautiful from our room. We were there in August 2005 and it was quite crowded. We truly appreciated that the hotel had parking facilities. The elevator was very slow as others had previously commented, but it did not ruin our stay in the least. I would return to this hotel and reccommend it to others.

The Grand Hotel Portovenere has a wonderful location across the street from the small harbor, where private boats are docked. A ferry runs daily between Portovenere and CinqueTerra. The standard room we were given was located just under the roof line, which limited our waterfront view. The room was basic, clean and comfortable, but lacked any style. Breakfast was included and they served a good assortment of foods. I would recommend the hotel for its location, ocean view and the ferry to CinqueTerra. The area is beautiful both day and night.

This was maybe the most pleasant and beautiful of any hotel I've stayed at. The reception people were wonderful. The room was absolutely fantastic, looking out at the multi-colored painted old town and the beautiful harbor. The lanai was a real plus.

Nice hotel, great location, nice views if you are in a sea-view room. The elevator was extremely slow.

Pensamos volver!!!

Wonderful location for visiting The Cinque Terre. We originally planned on staying for 2 nights over the weekend and extended our stay to 5 nights because we really enjoyed the hotel and Portovenere. Only drawback was the noise from the Weddings at the hotel on Saturday & Sunday night--had to keep our patio door closed.

The rooms I had specifically booked had not been reserved, even though I had booking number etc. Had it not been mid week,we would have been sleeping on the street. Absolutely shattering, as we had stayed here before and specifically wanted certain rooms. Not good enough, as obvious communication breakdown between website and hotel!!!!!!

Excellent facility, beautiful room with ocean view. Perfect for exploring Cinque Terre. A boat leaves hourly from right in front of hotel to all villages except Corniglia.

This hotel made our trip! The location was just perfect. The pictures don't do this hotel justice. Within one hour of our arrival we asked if we could stay another night. They didn't have an additional night in our current room, but upgraded us the additional night without extra charges and moved our luggage for us. We were very grateful. The staff was more than accommodating and extremely friendly. I was interested in scuba diving and they offered to set the whole thing up for me and did so quickly. The breakfast was more than enough food and very fresh with a beautiful view. When we go back I wouldn't think to stay anywhere else but this hotel. Portovenere is a wonderful place with excellent restaurants.

The website does not offer photos of the rooms and lobby therefore it was like a risk when I chose the hotel. Of course we were not disappointed when we saw the real rooms and we would suggest that the hotel puts up photos of their rooms. The hotel has no swimming pool - a disadvantage. However, it is convenient to go to Cinque Terre by boat from here rather than having to go to La Spezia. We loved the atmosphere and the view from our windows. The rooms on the top floor have balconies with view to the harbour while the rooms on the lower floors facing the sea have big windows with great view. The air-con is not strong but cool enough (in early July). We slept with windows open. There was noice from streets but not too badly. We find the promenade and the scenery of this hotel even better and more peaceful than that of Porto Fino. The local supermarket is just 50 meters from the hotel and offers great choices of local breads, hams and food products. Local restaurants were great with seafood and pasta (trenette and trofie) with pesto sauce. We could not be happier elsewhere for our visit to Cinque Terre. Our recommendation is to stay here two-three days max. to visit the neighbouring Five Lands. However, boats from here to Cinque Terre may be disappointing in the sense that it may not be able to stop at all four CT villages as it indicates in the programme (and you have to pay full price for it around 18 Euros for the whole day) due to strong sea/big waves (regardless of good weather and sunshine). You may end up having to get off the boat at the last village of Monterosso and having to take trains to other villages and having to come back to get on the boat at Monterosso again, which is a bit cumbersome. But the view from the boat is magnificant. We do not find the breakfast especially thrilling although there is a great choice. The ham served at hotel was not so good. But, we do love the view from the breakfast terrace. We w

Perhaps it was the end of the season and the staff was harried, but the front desk and the service people were not very welcoming, helpful or accomodating. The price of the room was high for the surroundings and the service. The cost of laundry was prohibitive ... more than any 5 star hotels I've stayed in around the world. Charging for postcards that advertised the hotel was very tacky. The restaurant was good and the service there was good.

This hotel was one of our favorites on the trip. We had a two bedroom suite with a lovely bath, overlooking the water. The beds were wonderful, decor lovely, bathroom big and spotless, and on the edge of the water. What more could you ask for!

Very disappointed in this hotel. So much noise from upstairs and outside it was difficult to sleep. Smallest shower we've ever seen. We would not consider this a four star hotel. Portovenere was beautiful and the food at the hotel was good.

A lovely hotel situated in the heart of Portovenere, We wish we could have stayed longer. The ample room had a fantastic water view, Since there were 2 weddings in the hotel while we were there we didn't get full use of dining facilities. Breakfast on the veranda overlooking the boat docks was a dekight.

This was the most expensive hotel we stayed in while in Italy and it was by far the worst!!! It should only be one star! The rooms and halls are old, musky, and unattractive. The extremely small elevator was very slow and the stairs made you go outside and then down another flight to reenter the lobby. Our airconditioning didn't work and when we reported it they said it was supposed to be 82 degrees! We called later and asked for a fan but they said they didn't have any and couldn't move us to another room because all the air was out. It was supposedly fixed the next night but it still was pretty warm. Despite the hot sticky night in August, they refused to offer any discount for the air not working. This is outrageous when the price mostly reflects the luxury of air conditioning! We were very unhappy with our stay. We will never stay there again and I don't recommend you try it!!!

The hotel is situated in the heart of Porto Venere. Our room overlooked the Port - the view was magical. Parking was available - at a price - but that was most important as parking is almost non-existent in the town. Staff were courteous at all times. The hotel is well-run and the rooms are spotlessly clean.

We were very disappointed with this hotel and would not recommend anyone staying there. The pictures throughout the web are deceiving as they appear to show the hotel with the sea either side when in fact the rooms at the back of the hotel look out on to a very plain block that look like apartments and are very noisy. The bedrooms walls are very thin so you hear all the external noise from both inside and outside the hotel. It is highly overrated and does not deserve its four star rating. It should be 3 stars at the most. The furnishings and decor are very dated throughout the hotel. I read other reviews of this hotel on this website that were very positive however I can only now assume they must have mixed this hotel up with somewhere else!
