A comfortable hotel with friendly, helpfull staff. It is well situated in town with all kinds of interesting spots nearby. The only flaw I noticed was the noise early in the morning caused by street traffic.

Older-style hotel. Staff were very helpful and competent. Well situated for access to main plaza and train station, as well as buses.

The hotel is not brand new, but very clean and welcoming, with authentic old-style furniture. The room we got was really HUGE, and for the price it is really a good deal. If we get a chance to come back to Porto, we will certainly stay here again.

We had an apartament which was spacious and clean. The rooms were very cold, the windows didn't manage to keep out the noise from outside, it was terrible. We couldn't sleep all night because of the noise from the cars, people screaming/fighting/partying outside. I would recommend it to people who are not picky about their sleeping conditions.

Good overall hotel, pretty clean, quite central location (15-20 mins walk to the touristic areas) , decent breakfast but not completely suitable to vegetarians or vegans (no fruit), beds are a little small, furniture pretty old fashioned (it reminded my girlfriend's of her grandmother's room) and lack of communal/public spaces (there is however a very small bar next to the reception) . Very nice staircase though...! Recommended if on a budget (50 euros per night per couple) but plenty of better choices around if your wallet is larger...

Sinon: parfait...

Hotel was great value for money - we were 3 adults in 2 twin rooms with bathroom in between. furnishings rather dated but well maintained and very clean.staff at reception was very friendly in guiding us where to go and for general service. hotel super positioned for access to old town and all main sightseeing places.

We stayed only for one night but were entirely satisfied. The hotel is quite central, short walk to river area. By european standard, room was large, with antique furnishing. Breakfast was simple, but suffice. For the price, it was well worth it. Only thing is front desk was under renovation, but otherwise nice hotel.

The hotel was well situated - close to public transit and easily accessed by taxi. It was about a 15 minute walk through the old town to the Rio Douro. There were 3 of us and the rooms provided were wonderful - charming, well appointed and clean - 2 separate bedrooms with the washroom in between. The hotel staff were extremely knowledgeable and accommodating. I would highly recommend staying at Residencial Pao de Acucar.

Of the three hotels we stayed in in Portugal, this one stood head and shoulders above the rest. The thing that really made a difference was the staff - the young ladies on the reception desk were extremely friendly and helpful, spoke great English and made us feel very welcome. Also, the room (booked as a triple) was great, with two large separate bedrooms and a shared bathroom. There was loads of bedding for the chilly nights, and we were encouraged to use the air coon to warm the rooms too. Location is great - a very close walk from Sao Bento Train Station, and off a lovely square. STAY HERE!!!!

This is the first time I have stayed at this hotel. It is conveniently situated in the downtown area, close to most things and public transport. I would stay there again at this price. The staff were very friendly and helpful, but do not take too much notice of their recommendation for restaurants as those mentioned by them are also owned by the same group! My only gripe was the size of the breakfast room and the number of guests it had to accommodate. The positioning of the buffet bat was so close to the tables that access was greatly impeded. My advice, take one of the tables outside on the landing where you will not be disturbed.

Horrible.First time in my life I cancelled the rest of the stay after one night in this hotel.Very small bed - 180x120cm - impossible for two people to sleep on it.The hotel itself occupies just upper floors of the building - there is a little hospital on 1st floor and a legal office on 2nd etc. Many strange people wondering on the corridors with no control of the reception which is hidden on the ground floor in a side corridor.Poor breakfast served in very small room so some tables are placed in the corridor. The location-in the centre was fine. The rest was a nightmare.

Pleasing and interesting hotel. The central stairchase is a wonderful piece of architecture. Non expensive, offers huge, very comfortable rooms in a central location. Something of an "old style" that is not disturbing. Good breakfast, friendly staff. Parking available in a nearby garage, expensive.

This is a small hotel right in the center of town, a little old-fashioned but very charming and excellent value for money. Nice rooms, clean, good breakfast (panoramic breakfast room on the 6th floor), extremely friendly and helpful staff. One block from metro station. Old town and shopping areas within walking distance. I came for a scientific meeting and it was great to stay at Pao de Acucar (and not at the Sheraton) because it is much better located for exploring the city. Not really luxurious, though.

The hotel was excellent for a short stay of a weekend; the staff were professional and had good knowledge of necessary information; they spoke different languages and smiled. The room was very good: spacious, clean, good quality, proper, individualistic furniture. Lots of slightly out-dated lamps which gave a good atmosphere. Well done Pao de Acucar!

Just in the center of Porto (near to Avenida dos Aliados) and a few walks from Aliados metro station. A little bit uncared and old style, but clean and efficient. An excellent relationship between quality and price. My only problem in Porto has been that on sunday this time is a ghost-city, no restaurants, no cafè, only a few attractions available. Better on week days.

I really tried to like this place. Decor was OK, location was great, rooms were small to tiny. BUT, the walls were like tissue paper and my neighbors snoring was so loud it sounded like they were in my bed. The beds were tiny/short with head and footboards and I had to try to sleep with my head on the nightstand and my feet hanging off the opposite side...and the breakfast was really bad

This hotel is clean and basic - offers good value for money for those wanting to stay close to the centre of oporto but it is just outside the world heritage site. The pictures on the site however are misleading in that the terrace shown is only available to residents of the apartments next door and the granary restaurant mentioned is not even next to the hotel- it's on a nearby street! A minus for this hotel was the huge water heater above the bath; right next to the shower head, and the dreadful noise from the street outside combined with the air conditioning unit inside the room.

What a find! Not much to look at outside but the hotel is inside an old art deco building with a lovely art deco staircase. Helpful reception let me leave my bag before I checked in and after I checked out. Really helpful and friendly. The room was excellent. Elegantly furnished and very well kept. The bathroom was quite old fashioned but so well maintained it barely seemed old - even though it was clearly sixties vintage and handsome with it. I only paid 45 euro for a single and I got a terrific double. Breakfast was excellent and the hotel is centrally located just yards from the town hall but extremely quiet (Porto is not a noisy town anyway). I wouldnt describe it as a luxury hotel but it is excellent value for money.

Room was comfortable, nice big bathroom, and a sitting area. Staff were friendly and helpful, spoke great English! Location was a short minute walk to all of Porto. One thing a bit confusing is the photo on the website of an outdoor, rooftop patio... I understood that to be the breakfast area/bar,... but learned upon arrival that it is a private terrace for individual guests... Breakfast was inside on the 6th floor, a bit hectic, but included. :)

The hotel is pretty basic and reminded me of a high end back packers lodge. The bed was comfy, bathroom was looked new and clean and staff was very pleasant. Looking around, there were not a lot of other places to stay in Porto in that area, and the area is fantastic to get to what you want to see (plus very close to the main train station). On arrival the hotel had no record of my reservation through Venere. (I had booked a triple room). I had the printout of the confirmation of reservation. Originally three of us had planned to travel but only two of us did. The hotel had no triple room available and claimed they were heavily booked. After some discussion and negotiation, as we were not a couple, they put me up in a huge suite for the night and my friend had a double room. The next day they moved us to a Junior suite which had two double beds and a private bathroom. It was lovely. After the mix up the hotel staff did everything they could to make us happy. The breakfast was included and was excellent value. I would definitely stay there again. The hotel is very centrally located and it is a short 10 minute walk down hill to the old town and river. Some restaurants I would recommend are Cafe Majestic great for lunch or a light snack. It is located in a beautiful hisotric building, lots of character. The highlight for eating was Esplanada Marisqueira, expensive but fantastic for fresh seafood. It is a little way out of town in Matoshinos, but you can get there by metro. For an overall glimpse of Porto, do the bus tour and river cruise. The Port wine cellars are also worth a visit. Porto is a beautiful city highly recommended.
