The river front room was noisy, but we were aware of this issue when we booked. Our room was on the 3rd floor, and it wasn't a big issue, lower floors may. Room was quaint, perfect for one night; the bathroom could use an update, Only had a hand held shower head, would have liked a wall hook to make it hands free. The room was small by American standards, typical of other 3 star hotels I've stayed in Europe. Good breakfast buffet included and they have a lovely top floor terrace where they will deliver refreshments. Wifi in lobby area only for a small fee. Employees spoke English fairly well, and were helpful with recomendations and calling a taxis.

My wife and I stayed one night at The Royal Victoria and found the old world charm and antique furniture delightful. Our room was very clean and spacious and had a marvellous view of the river. The staff were friendly and helpful and the breakfast was fine just don't expect to have the same breakfast you are used to at home. Unfortunately I can't say we had a quiet night, this was not the fault of the hotel but the noise of revellers in the streets outside went on until 3 or 4am. At 5am a street sweeping lorry started work and after that it was the morning traffic. The hot water in the bathroom was not very hot, however we still felt that the hotel was good value for money and we would definatley stay again, next time we would ask for a room at the back, hopefully quieter.

Royal Victoria hotel gave us the impression of staying in a 1800th century "royal" hotel with todays comfort. We enjoyed time in the lovely roof garden with all its plants. The staff was very nice and helpful. We will recommend this hotel to anyone going to Pisa.

Please remeber we are from the United States and this hotel was very old and in Italy so our responses are based on our comparison to a U.S. hotel. The hotel was spectacular and we stayed there again two weks later. Great place!!!

Well, i would say it was rather a Museum than a Hotel :P The First impression with the friendly welcome of the staff kept up to the end of our short stay at the hotel. Hotel was very neat and clean, full of antiques display, We liked it very much. Only 1 advice to others, do not use the phone in the room !!! I did not understand, how come they could charge me 50 Euros for 3 international calls for few mins? Its totally robbery. Anyway, the Garden at the 4th floor was very romantic. If i dont count the telephone bill, then the hotel was quite impressive and noteworthy.

We enjoyed our night here - it was such an interesting building, breakfast was excellent and it was about a 12 minute walk to the Leaning Tower. They looked after our bags and advised us when and where to get the bus to the airport - from almost outside the hotel, for 1 euro each, takes about 15 minutes if that. We had arrived by train from Florence the evening before and walked to the hotel, which was about 20-25 minutes and quite an effort with bags. Could have taken the bus if we'd known.

The hotel in regards to service and friendliness of staff, certainly lived up to our expectations. In addition, the hotel had lots of charm and history to it and was in many ways classy. There were a few minuses however. We payed top rate for what we thought was their best room. But apart from facing the river, the room was not too impressive. The rooms could need a renovation. Not that we used the TV, but it was tiny and generally hidden by the footboard of the bed. The shower was impractical and flooding the floor with every shower... Facing the river the hotel also faced a busy street with cars and tons of people on it late into the night. Some Sound isolation on windows and walls would be a good idea. :)

There was some renovation/construction in the neighbourhood. Therefore it was quite noisy at our room. But it is a temporary problem, I think.

The hotel has its own charm and a friendly professional staff. The room was nice, the breakfast continental and quiet good. The interior of the hotel is worth a second look and the terrace on the fourth floor a real highlight. Being well situated close to the center of Pisa, our biggest problem was to find an acceptable parking place for the car, as we didn´t want to pay 25 Euros per night for a place on the hotels carport.

We loved this place! It is on the river which was nice and within walking distance of everything. The breakfast was phenominal...breads, cereals, pastries, cheeses, meats and an excellent cup of cappucino. The hotel staff was lovely, helpful and spoke excellent English. The decor of the hotel was really nice and unique. Although our room was small it was clean and adequate.

A good value hotel on the banks of the Arno, midway between the railway station and the main sites of Pisa. Very convenient for the bus to the airport, which goes from just outside. Staff were very helpful indeed. We opted for a room with a shared bathroom to save money at the end of our holiday. This was not as convenient as we'd expected (shower was two floors up, and toilet on our floor had no lock), but there seemed to be little demand for the shared facilities, so it was fine.

Nice location, quiet by the river, easy to access via the airport bus. Lively squares a short walk away for a nice evening meal. Not too far from the Duomo and leaning tower. Nice hotel a bit old-fashioned, rooms more old-fashioned than public areas but clean and provided a really good buffet breakfast with lots of variety.

After two weeks in the Apuane Alps, we had a weekend in the Royal Victoria and we LOVED it. Great 19th century atmosphere, lovely rooms, friendly and very competent staff, great breakfast in the most atmosheric dining hall you can imagine, and all that for reasonable prices. The only hint to future guests, which I guess to be valid for all Pisa hotels: bring some lotion against mosquitoes, we woke up with bites all over...

Great loccation, particularly if you had one of the rooms at the back which were very quiet. Wonderful public areas (we expected to see people in victorian dress), but the bedrooms themselves were more basic. The buffet breakfast was very good indeed and served in a lovely room by charming staff. Pisa is a great location for a few days - the leaning tower is spectacular and the baptistery and cemetery wonderful. Lots of great restaurants, churches and open spaces. The bus from the airport is straightforward and stops right outside the hotel. You can walk to the station in 10 minutes and go easily to Lucca and Florence.

The Royal Victoria is a wonderful, old and fascinating place. We booked a room with a view of the river and it was lovely to wake up and look out of the windows. The hotel is full of history and atmosphere and the reception staff were very kind and polite. The room was clean and spacious and calm. It was very interesting to walk in the many spare rooms full of historic paintings, pictures and statues. We had three lovely days and nights at the oldest and most interesting hotel in Pisa.

This is a charming hotel with a old world grandeur and elegance. Everything about our stay was fine, the rooms, the staff, the breakfast buffet with a large selection served in the beautiful dining rooms... I just don't understand why they are running what is really a low- to mid-range holiday hotel in what with a bit of investment could be a 4/5 star establishment!

We experienced a wonderful finale of our Italian holiday in this hotel. History is seeping out of its walls but comfort is applied for its visitors. Only the elevator was difficult at times to manouvre in because of its miniscule size. Our room at the front of the hotel gave us front row seats to the spectacle on the bridge, which we came to see, but it also kept us awake till the wee hours. We can recommend this hotel highly to anyone visiting Pisa and Lucca.

The Victoria is in a time warp and we love it. We paid 25e extra for a front room overlooking the river, well worth the extra.Good breakfast. The hotel is in a great position for access to both sides of this wonderful city. If you go to Florence be there by 8am! After 10am you can't move for tour groups. Good restaurants near the tower. Watch out for extras on the bill and check wine prices before ordering, one restaurant charged 2e for a glass of wine another 2e.

What a beautiful hotel, it was absolutely glorious, fantastically placed over the river and really good value for money. Just be specific when you book however because when you read the info it says rooms with Air Conditioning are available on request, we didnt ask for aircon and ours didnt work, it was very noisy where we were, and the only breeze we could get was with the window open.

Prebooked through venere and got a very nice room with aircon for 85 euros. We returned to the same hotel and hoped for a nice room again, but the hotel was almost full and we got a much smaller room with a fan for 80 euros. Due to a bit noisy neighborhood, we had to have the windows closed and the room got very hot and uncomfortable. The breakfast which was included in the price was real nice. The hotel was otherwise very beautiful with a large terrace on the 4th floor. The score on General review and Quality vs price is based on my stay on two different occasions.

The hotel was beautiful - a treasure trove of wonderful rooms to explore. Our room overlooked the river, which was wonderful, as we happened to arrive in time for a parade and boat race that only occur every four years! Breakfasts were adequate and the hotel was well situated, half-way between the station and the main attractions. We had a wonderful time, thanks to Venere and the Royal Victoria.

This was our third vist. Once with teenaged daughters, once with a friend and this time just the two of us. Each time we stayed in different rooms. The two rooms on the top floor next to the roof top terrace is probably the most spacious. The staff managed to manouvre the car through the market from the garage for us. Breakfast is excellent with fresh fruit ect self served in a beautiful dinning room. It is an elderly building with creaks but has recently been renovated and has wonderful memorabilia on the walls. It is neither the Hilton nor a youth hostel, but it is right on the river and a short walk through the main streets to the Tower. There is a museum on the opposite side of the river worth visiting, and it is interesting to take a long walk on both sides of the river.

Our room was very large, light and overlooked the river. Although it was fairly basic it had lots of character. Perhaps our only complaint was that the shower recess did not drain particularly well and it would have been better with a screen rather than a curtain. A very interesting hotel with lots of history. It was very nice to see some of the rooms set up as they would once have been rather like a museum. There is also a small but very nice terrace area for guests. We had a very early departure so our breakfast was pretty basic - some packaged cakes, biscuits, coffee and orange juice. We would definitely stay here again, the hotel is in an ideal location and very easy to find.

Staff were pleasant but this is an expensive tired old hotel which needs a lot of money spending on the bedrooms. The management seem to use "age and character" as an excuse for poor standards. A lot of the funiture is just old and shabby, it is not antique.Breakfast was very average. It needs a complete revamp, and it can still retain its character.

The room was basic to say the least. The door wouldn't open and the lock had to be replaced, the furniture was old - not charming old, just old except for the cheap melamine bedside tables. The tiny shower was horrible and the general feel of the room something akin to a retreat house in a convent at triple the price. On complaining we were told that it was our fault for having booked a standard room! At 80 euros a night (including the 10% discount) we were just thankful this was only one night. The contrast was more evident as we had just spent 5 nights at 90 euros a night in a hotel in Bologna with a gorgeous suite and luxury bathroom incorporating its own TV. We are frequent travellers to Pisa for one night on the way to the airport - sure we can do better next time.

This is a beautiful old building with lovely high-ceilinged rooms, in a perfect location on the riverside, convenient for the railway station and the tower (both about 10-15 minutes walk). Our stay at the Royal Victoria was a delight. I had read other reviews about the spaciousnes and charm of this grand old hotel and the wonderful breakfasts and it did not disappoint! The roof top terrace was beautiful and there were many spacious rooms for guests to use in addition to the very generously appointed bedrooms. The antique furniture in the hotel was amazing, the place is a living museum, oozing history and charm. The breakfast was delicious, a wonderful buffet with everything and more that you would expect in Europe - breads, pastries, cereals, meats and cheeses, fresh fruit and yogurt. Really delicious and the coffee was absolutley belissimo! The hotel staff were very friendly and helpful, nothing was too much trouble. They even printed out a train timetable for the next leg of our trip. Fantastic service! My only regret was that we couldn't stay longer. Pisa has so much more to offer than just the leaning tower, I would encourage people to consider staying at least a couple of days, and at the Royal Victoria you will do it in style!

Stayed here only one night and was perfect for a quick visit to Pisa before an early morning flight from the airport. Location excellent- 15-20 min walk to the Campo dei Miracoli and yet only 10 mins by public bus (0.95 euro) to the airport. Hotel was clean, quirky, with an excellent breakfast. It's noisy if you're at the front overlooking the river but you are in the middle of a city so it's to be expected- just bring earplugs if you're a light sleeper!

The hotel had character with beautiful old furniture in the public areas and great displays of photographs. However it could do with some refurbishment and a fresh coat of paint. The location was excellent but was very noisy at night. The students congregate right outside with live music until midnight. Most of the staff we met had a poor command of english which limited their ability to help. Our room was tiny and sparsly furnished. It was very clean , linen was changed daily and there was lots of hot water - no hair dryer though. Have not recommended it to friends who are visiting Pisa next week.

This place was amazing! The photos do not do justice to a place that is so full of interesting history. No, it is not a modern comfortable chain hotel. If that is what you want, look elsewhere. But nothing prepared us for this historic building, the antique furniture (which could be viewed as basic by modern standards), the beautiful architecture and state room decor, the river view, the vast range of famous previous guests over 100 years. If we go back to Pisa, we will definitely stay here again.

Shared bathroom is a bit strange. One toilet on each floor but our room had a bidet ! So how were we meant to get from toilet down the hall to bidet in our room ....... ?

Although our room was basic, it was clean, and the location of the room was excellent. We were in a section with just one other room, facing a beautiful public area. We were also adjacent to the hotel's public terrace, a lovely outdoor area that felt as if it was our own private area. What is special about this hotel is the history and its preservation by the owners. Every public area is filled with antiques, old prints, interesting furniture, flower arrangements, etc. The attention to detail was amazing, and the location of the hotel across from the Arno River and right near the University of Pisa was excellent. Staying here is a unique experience. The buffet continental breakfast with cereals, fruit, pastries, meats, cheese, rolls, etc. was served graciously in a lovely room. Overall, I would rate this hotel highly, taking into account that the actual room was basic but quite serviceable.

On arrival our booking had not been recorded, the hotel gave us at no extra cost a suite overlooking the river despite the fact we had only booked an standard room with no river view. The front of the hotel is noisy as it is in close proximity to the university, however, ask for a room at the rear which is very quiet. The hotel is full of character and was a delight to stay at. The staff are friendly and obliging and it is the only hotel I have ever stayed at where they provided coffee and pastries at 4.30 am for early departures. The full breakfast fully deserved the favourable comments already given by other guests.

Lovely, characterful hotel. Only a 5 minute taxi from the airport and 900m from the train and the main attractions. Well positioned for the bars and restaurants (and not just the touristy ones). Roof-top sun terrace is a lovely spot to start or end your day. View from our room over the river was lovely but it can get noisy outside on a Saturday night. No bar and no food or snack facilities outside of breakfast period. Otherwise highly recommended, especially if your looking for some old-world charm.

Excellent! Beautiful old building, really spacious rooms, hallways and stairways. It's well worth taking the time to walk around and check out the building. The rooftop terrace is nice and peaceful, and lovely to have a drink while watching the sunset. The staff were very helpful and competent overall. It did take a long time to check out, mainly because everyone seemed to be checking out at the same time and there was only one staff member on reception. The breakfast was great, huge selection, including gluten free and sugar free foods, in a very scenic room. Unfortunately, no internet access, but the staff will gladly direct you to a couple of internet points nearby. The hotel was right on the main street adjacent to the river, with some amazing old buildings to look at, 15 minutes walk to the leaning tower and plenty of shops nearby. Overall, a fantastic place to stay, would definitely go back!

We had booked one of the original rooms and it was just as you would have expected, spacious with a great view of the river, The hotel itself is just like a museum - look round the public areas they are fascinating. The staff were charming and very helpful. There is a lovely roof terrace to relax on.

We stayed in Royal Victoria for (unfortunately..) one night; I wish we could have stayed longer! We liked our traditional double room very much; we had a beautiful room-with-a-view (facing the river), the only minus are the beds.. The hotel gives you the feeling that you're in a museum, every public room is really nice decorated with pictures and antique furniture. We also liked the fantastic roof-top-terrace: it is the perfect location to drink some wine and to enjoy Pisa-by-night!

Strongly Recomended. I Slept there in my girlfriend's birthday, and when I reached the Reception, they called her to say Happy Birthday, and Gave her a Little Present. Remarcable. A little gesture that made the difference.

We chose to stay here again following a most enjoyable stay earlier in the year. We particularly enjoy the location, the spaciousness, the visible history of the building, and the courteousness of the staff.

The room had high standard. The coffee corner was excellent. The breakfast did not include eggs as it usually other hotels have but we were very pleased with the hotel and all facilities. The view from the terrace was impresive. I was together with my wife.

Perfect hotel for 1 or 2 nights (if you stay in a room with shared toilet and bathroom like we did). Breakfast (buffet) was perfect, especially if you compare it with the other hotels we stayed in later on during our trip through Tuscane.

The real thing was better than the best review that we had read, before booking. Exploring the public rooms is positively encouraged and there are gems (not literally) hidden around every corner. The roof terrace is both charming and great fun, and the reading room on the first floor overlooking the River Arno is delightful. Find the old Kitchen if you can. Breakfast was exceptional and taken in the lovely first floor Salle a Manger. We dined at a nearby Restaurant 'Beny' at Piazza Gambacorti 22, Tel 050.25067 on recommendation from and reservation by the Hotel. Wonderful. Do reserve, as the Restaurant is small. The Owner is front of house and enthuses about his food and wine - an experience in itself. Pick up the History of the Royal Hotel Victoria by asking for a copy at Reception

This hotel was one of the grand old duchesses of the early 20th century. It needs updating, especially in the bathrooms. However, if you like quaint rooms, antique furniture, old-world charm etc.--this is the place for you.

Like most of Italy and all of Pisa, stepping into this hotel was like stepping back into the 1940's, or maybe even earlier. Of course the hotel had running water, electricity, cable TV and all the modern 'necessities'; it was the atmosphere and ambiance of this 1000 year old building that made it feel like you were stepping back into time. The hotel was a brief 10+ minute walk to the Leaning Tower. For me it was especially exciting to know that Galileo taught mathematics just one block away from the hotel at the Pisa University almost 500 years earlier. I had to wonder how many times he might have walked past this building or even walked into it. The room was beautiful. It was large, clean, had a comfortable queen sized bed, was full of antique furniture (antique by American standards), had a great view of the varied and quaint buildings down an ally (again, quaint by American standards), the bath had a tub rather than just a shower, and was in all a very nice room in which we very much enjoyed staying. There was cable TV, but only one channel was in English (CNN International). The staff was friendly and helpful, though no one could tell me how to find Galileo's birthplace. The only ding against the hotel is not really the hotel's doing, but is inherent in Italy. All of Italy is constructed from bricks and tile and then covered with plaster and/or grout. All of these surfaces are hard and do not absorb sound. While the walls in every room of the this 1000 years old building were two or more feet thick, the doors are just ordinary wood. As a result, every time someone had a conversation in the halls or common areas of your floor, you heard that conversation. If someone came upstairs from the restaurant or bar and was laughing and carrying on, that sound bounced around your floor and entered every room. For that reason, if you stay at this hotel, or any other in Italy, I would encourage getting a room on the top floor, because there will be fewer people p

Very interesting building. Reasonable walk from the train station. Unfortunately the front of the building wa scaffolded when we arrived. We should have been warned of this. We requested a quiet room. We were given a side room near the front with an alley below. We arrived on a Sunday and this seemed fine. However on Monday morning the traffic built up in the main road at the front of the hotel and scooters started using the alley. Our best advice for anyone needing quiet is to ask and make sure you get a room at the rear, that does not overlook an alley. We also had a problem with the air conditioning unit, which started to make strange noises when it had run for a time. This proved very difficult to track down and drove us mad for a while. Staff were very good, although they wouldn't let us settle the bill the night before we left. Public rooms and interior excellent and worth the stay alone. Breakfast was very good. The airport bus stops vitually outside the front door and provides a reliable, frequent and cheap service. (Buy your ticket in the tabac before boarding). Would visit again.
