We were lucky enough to have a rooftop room with private terrace...what an unbelievable view over the rooftops of Perugia. The only thing was the lift stopped at the 4th floor and our room was 2 more flights of stairs up. A wonderful stay in a unique hotel.

LOVED Perugia and this hotel. VERY close to Piazza Della Republica, Piazza IV Novembre, Universita per Stranieri, fantastic views of the city, etc. Hotel staff were very warm, welcoming, and helpful. Considered walking there from the train station, but ended up very happy to have taken a taxi--GoogleMaps estimates a 25-30 minute walk time, but it turns out to be 1-2 mile walk completely uphill--a pretty tough hike if you've got heavy luggage. I completely recommend this city and this hotel! :o)

This was my second stay at the Hotel Fortuna; I stayed there in 2007. I was happy to find that since my last stay, they'd done some remodeling, so that what was a pleasant, semi-attractive hotel is now an exceptionally attractive hotel. The staff was very helpful with questions such as: where should we eat? How do we get to...? And etc. They even put up with my poor Italian skills. The breakfast was very good as well. The only downside is that our room was right across the street from a noisy bar. I was largely able to sleep through the noise, but my wife, who is more sensitive, had some problems with it. Since Perugia is one of my favorite places in Italy, I will no doubt be returning to the Hotel Fortuna in the future.

This is a great hotel in an excellent location. The building is beautiful and full of character, retaining many original features. It is located near to the main square with regular and cheap bus services from the train station, so there's no need to take a taxi. It's also a short walk to all of the main attractions.

Great location in the Centro Storico. Excellent value for money. Good breakfast, friendly staff and we were given a Christmas present of two bottles of local wine! Only criticism - instructions for reaching the hotel from the station other than by taxi could be more helpful.

Without reservation, my wife and I consider this to be the best stay we had on our trip to Italy. The hotel was in a scenic part of the old town of Perugia, within walking distance of all points of interest. The staff was extremely helpful, and the facilities were great. Our only regret was that we didn't plan to stay longer.

A lovely little hotel!! Our room had a private balcony overlooking the beautiful Tuscan scenery. We enjoyed drinking wine and watching the sunset from there. The staff could not have been more helpful in getting information we required for transportation to Assisi and other needs. We would love to return to Hotel Fortuna one day!

I stayed at the Hotel Fortuna on my first trip to Perugia, but only for one night, and in a single room. It is centrally located on a pedestrian only street where cars are admitted by ringing a bell to the hotel, which drops a barrier to let the car in or out. The public spaces (breakfast room and salon or salotta on my floor) were large and well decorated. My room was adjacent to a terrace as well.

This was our third stay at the Fortuna and it was, as always, excellent and a model of what all hotels should aspire to. The reception staff are welcoming and helpful, booking reservations and ordering taxis. The breakfast lady is wonderful, seeing to your every need. We have stayed in three different rooms and all were spacious and pleasant. On our most recent visit the room offered was a little claustrophobic, with a high window, and the clerk was only too happy to change it for another one. The hotel is attractive, reasonably priced, with a good breakfast, well situated and a good base to explore the surrounding area. Without fault, and an excellent hotel in its catigory.

Particularly on Saturday evening the noise from the street was almost unbearable making it difficult to sleep. Since it was our last night there was no point in complaining to hotel staff because 1) there would be no time to move us to a new room and 2) there was nothing they could do about the street noise which was somewhat of an echo effect due to the small street surrounded by tall buildings. The location of the hotel was outstanding, and the condition of the hotel was excellent event though our room was tiny. Note, the tiny room is pretty much the norm in this geographic area. As outlined on the website, we had to pay for parking. The access to the hotel via a very narrow road was difficult to navigate, and we had to call the hotel so they could lower the barrier in order for us to drive into the limited traffic zone where the hotel was located. Additionally, the hotel was hard for us to find, but I'm not sure if that was because we were exhausted from a long drive.

We stayed three nights at the Fortuna, to see the famous fountain and the frescoes at nearby Assisi, and found it to be faultless and an excellent hotel of its class. The staff, without exception, from the reception to the chamber maids and kitchen staff were all friendly, professional, helpfull and efficient. The reception gave advice and directions and booked taxis with pleasure. The breakfast was ample and varied with the staff solicitous to your requirements. You may say they were only doing their job but one does not always find such conscientious behaviour and pride in one's work. We booked a buget room which was fine for our needs, small but cosy, with an atmospheric view of a Gothic courtyard. The hotel is an attractive ivy-clad ancient building, superbly situated at the highest point of the hill town. Of local restaurants, I can reccommend La Mediterranee (Spelling?) for pizza and La Lanterna for local cuisine. Both just off the main square. If only all hotels were like the Fortuna. I'll be back.

This was by far my favourite place I stayed when in Italy. The hotel had a lot of character, the room I had was spacious (although the bathroom was on the smaller side), clean and quiet...I even had my own staircase leading to my room! The location was perfect - easy to get to (get the bus from the train station to the main square and follow the signs) and close to everything. The staff were helpful, the internet was free after 8pm and the breakfast was great. Would definitely stay here again.

Good hotel in pedestrian street would never have found it independently. Asked for room with a view and were not disappointed. We were on the 5th floor(top)and had our own private terrace complete with table and chairs and a view to die for overlooking the rooftops of Perugia---MAGICAL. Perugia itself was further from the airport than we expected so a taxi cost about 27 euros.

The webpage indicates that the hotel has an elevator/lift; however, many rooms require the use of stairs. My husband and I were traveling with my mother, who uses a cane. We had a spacious double room on the main level. My mother had a tiny room on the second floor that required the use of stairs (without a handrail). I would not recommend this hotel for individuals with mobility issues. The hotel is in a great location within the city center. The windows in our room faced a restaurant with outdoor seating - earplugs helped block the voices that went late into the night.

My stay at the Hotel Fortuna was most enjoyable and just as described. My room happened to be the very last one available, which as a single, was very small but had a lovely outlook. Best of all, this charming hotel is in an excellent location, right in the heart of the old city on a quiet side street without all the noisy commotion. Very peaceful and relaxing!

This three day stay was my second time at the Hotel Fortuna. It is located in a central position steps from Piazza Italia where one of the local buses from the main rail station terminates. The hotel, although ancient, has been brought up to modern standards while retaining the original character of the building’s frescos and stonework. The staff at reception was outstanding. The young man working here each evening was especially cheerful and helpful with information on restaurants. He insisted on printing bus schedules for our trips to Assisi and Gubbio. I think of Perugia as a particularly tourist-friendly town with fine restaurants and shopping. If you have a spare moment in this hotel, like me, you may be drawn back outside to the view over the surrounding countryside from the beauutiful Piazza Italia. Our room, with a comparatively large bathroom, was tastefully furnished and spotless. It overlooked a picturesque narrow street which was quiet day and night except that one evening late in the week there was some loud pedestrian noise for a short time, something that may be hard to avoid in Perugia. I would be happy to accept the same room again and to return to the Hotel Fortuna.

Hotel in in the very historical heart of Perugia, close to Corso Vannucci, Priori Palace and fontana maggiore. You can easily reach the historical center of Perugia from train station in Fontivegge or parking areas in Pian di Massiano with Minimetrò, the new line operated by litlle wagons, partialy underground, connecting the old city on the hit of a hill just in 5 minutes. Pincetto terminal station is just a few minuts of walk by Hotel Fortuna. Perugia is a little town but very young and international due to the Foreign University.

Absolutely wonderful hotel. Perfect location, close to the Piazza and wonderful dining, art, night life - the list goes on and on. The hotel staff were wonderful in assisting us with suggestions, directions, and any special requests we had. Breakfast was great. We would recommend using a taxi to get to the hotel for the first time if traveling by plane/rail.

The one *big* negative is: no wifi internet, just one shared PC for internetting AND for that you need to pay extra until 8pm. Apart from that, everything is between "pretty good" and "excellent", especially if you get a room with a view (the view from the "best" side of the hotel is awesome, breathtaking really).

The Fortuna is excellently located for walking to the main sites...even in the rain. Restaurants, pubs and a movie theater that showed films in English were also a plus. Good breakfast, helpful staff and WiFi in the room made for a very nice stay! Parking in the public lot was inexpensive and accessible due to the escalators to the old town.

I took my sister, niece and mother to Perugia for my birthday. It is a superb medieval city. Hotel Fortuna is right in the heart of the city centre and ideally suited for all the sights. We had 2 single rooms and one double room. One of the single rooms was rather small and there was a problem with the electrics. The hotel changed the room without any fuss and the new room was in fact a double. The other single room was quite spacious. Hotel Fortuna is a former palace and its layout reflects that. I could not have chosen a better place to stay - it was wonderful.

The contract from Venere stated free internet access; the hotel insisted (very officiously) that internet was free only after 8 p.m. There was a charge any other time. Room very noisy because of crowd from chocolate festival and smelled. Dark and not very welcoming. Would not stay there again.

Location of hotel was excellent. Taxi driver totally ripped us off with the cab charge of 22 Euros from train station to the hotel, which I knew was excessive based on comments from other reviews - but I didn't speak Italian and he didn't speak english. Return fare was only 12 Euros. A lovely township. Room was basic but we were not spending much time there in any case. The bathroom could have done with an overhaul.

The Fortuna is charming and located right off the main street which is located at the very top of the hill on which Perugia is located. All attractions are easily accessible by foot. Numerous restaurants are nearby with almost all having outdoor seating. Because Perugia is located within a walled city on a hilltop, there is always a breeze coming up or down from the valley. The view is spectacular, especially from this hotel's small rooftop garden. Being a hilltop city, the city must be located on 17 different layers. Finding one's way with a car is very difficult. The free and paid parking lots are located several layers down but can be accessed by escalators within reasonable walking distance. However, finding one's way from the parking lots to further downhill where the train station and the roads that lead to the highway are located, is quite difficult as most street corners are not labeled by sign posts or the usually posting on a building. There are also many switch backs and lots of one way streets. I would definitely recommend the Fortuna if you are not driving. I had a car for several days and changed hotels so that I had the possibility of finding the highway and finding my way back to the hotel. Also be aware there are four different highway exits for Perugia so be sure to know where you got on. Don't miss the National Art Gallery which is only about 2 blocks away.

I came to Perugia to attend a funeral in the family. I knew the hotel from a stay more than 50 years ago. Being in a building from the 1300s was interesting. Quite a few steps and odd angles but I enjoyed it. Some of the walls were 3 feet thick. The rooftop terrace had absolutely the best views in Perugia. It overlooked the valley and mountains in the distance. That alone was worth the cost of the room. The free breakfast had the most choices in all the hotels we stayed in during our 15 days in Italy.

The hotel is quaint, with old-world charm. The rooms are clean and good-sized, and the staff was pleasant and helpful. The first room we were given had only a tiny window near the ceiling - it was kind of strange and made us feel claustrophobic. When we asked to change rooms, they were very accomodating and gave us a very nice upgrade (bigger room with a small veranda and beautiful view). Breakfast was very good and was included in the price of the room (fabulous cappuccino). The location is great -- centrally located for shopping, restaurants, historic sites, walking distance to the School for Foreigners (where my son was attending). We were originally scheduled to stay 3 nights and then move to an apartment, but it was such a lovely place we ended up staying 5 nights at the hotel instead!

In the room they assigned us, the heating didn't work. The staff made several efforts but this did not do. It was impossible to change the room because it was December 31st and the Hotel was complete. On the following morning, they gave us another room where the heating worked well; it was also larger and the furniture was better than the first one. I would add that when we booked in Internet, we asked for a "standard room" as opposite to an "economic room". Later in the hotel we were told that economic rooms were those on the first floor, while we were on the second. However, the difference was not quite clear in the flyers illustrating the hotel we found there; some of them distingushed between both kinds of rooms, some mentioned three kinds, some made no difference at all. Anyway, we had no reason to complain; I would only note that the two rooms we got were on the same floor and at the same price, but we found the second better than the first (not taking into account the problem with heating, of course). All in all, we were fairly satisfied.

I suppose there will be some rooms like the ones shown in the photos, but our's was terrible!!The furniture and everything was so old, and needed repair and reformations!!Even the WC was old and the shower didn't function correctly and seemed from my grandpa's times!!!!At least it was a quiet room, the staff was friendly, and the breakfast was good. The positive thing about this hotel is it's excellent location, 4-3 minutes from the main square!!I would perhaps return to this hotel, but knowing that it is really provable that our room will never be like the ones shown in the photos.....al least no frescoes in the ceiling!

Perfect central location. Wonderfully helpful staff. But be aware that although the top floor rooms have great views, they are quite exposed, and temperatures in October can get quite low. Therefore the room temperatures in these rooms can be colder than on the lower floors. After one cold night on the fifth floor, we asked to be moved to a lower floor and were given the choice of three good, warm, rooms.

The hotel was wonderful...character, incredible service, charm, location and value were all ideal. After a terribly long overseas journey to get there, the arrival welcome and help could not have been better. The only noise issue was that my room was near the elevator, so I heard that from time to time. I was a single woman visiting Perugia and for business and pleasure, so I had several questions for the staff...they were all very friendly, enthusiastic and resourceful.

The location could not be more central-- a pleasant side street off the main drag. It's a nice hotel; my room was pleasant, if small. Main drawback: noise from outside, particularly music from a nearby bar and its customers talking very loudly in the street, esp. as they leave to go home (at 2 am or so). My room was not air-conditioned (I think for a higher price they do offer ac) so I had to sleep with the window open. Bring ear plugs.

My wife and I loved Hotel Fortuna! It was in the center of Perugia, a little hard to find, but a map from www.theaa.com helped our driver immensely. Fare from the train station was 10 euro as opposed to one euro for the bus but it was late and we were tired. Awe inspiring views from the roof garden and the staff was bilingual and welcoming. My wife had the foresight to bring earplugs so we were not bothered by street noise by the restaurant beneath the hotel. And there were plenty of things like the National Gallery and the Duomo within 10 minutes walking. A lovely hotel in a beautiful city. Visit La Taverna and La Antica Delle Volte for the best pizza ever but make sure you brush up on your Italian!

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Hotel Fortuna. It's a 15th century building that kept some of it's old "bones" exposed while modernizing - frescoes in the reading room, ancient brick walls, and, in our room, the original beams. We'd lie in bed wondering how the heck they got something that heavy up there. The staff were wonderfully helpful and friendly. Good breakfast in a beautifully frescoed room. A roof top terrace to enjoy the view and maybe a last glass of wine at night. But best of all may be the location - just off one of the main streets just down from the Museum and Cattedrale. Perugia is pretty hilly so it's nice to be able to get back to your hotel during the day to put your feet up. We'd gladly return to Hotel Fortuna!

The location was perfect. I got a small room with a balcony and access to the reading room but the shower area was small but is still okay. The restaurant beside the hotel also served very good food.

Bagno in ordine. Colazione buona.

Quiet but still in walking distance to all the sites. Tastefully decorated interior in historical building. Very helpful staff. Difficult to be reached by car.

Had a wonderful ten days here on the top floor with a private terrace -- never expected this room but much appreciated. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Breakfast was standard for Europe. City maps give no indication of the topography of the city -- Fortuna is just off the main "street" of Perugia and close to everything. Taxi to the train station was ten euros for late night returns but during the day only one euro for the bus. Not recommended for walking (which is more like climbing in the hill town).

Two kinds of rooms: new and old. Our room was old and noise. Old and small bathroom.

This hotel is very well located in the center of old Perugia. To find it with a car (we arrived witha a taxi so that was no problem) is somewhat of a challange.

This is a beautiful hotel in a great location, and the price is a great deal. I recommend requesting a room on the top floor so that you may have a large private balcony and a great view. The only downside was that, like most Italian hotels, driving to the hotel was very tricky. The staff was not helpful with directions over the phone or over email, but once I made it there they were very welcoming and helpful with parking. Now that I know how to get there, I would return in a heartbeat!

We had a bit of trouble finding the hotel to begin with because it's located in a no car area, but once we did they were very helpful. (The car space did cost a bit, compared with other places we had been to.) The location was perfect! It was close to everything and in a very cute street with a great pizza place around the corner. There was internet available and a very pretty courtyard on the fifth floor.

We really liked this hotel, but strongly recommend asking for one of the (two?) rooms on the 5th floor. We were initially shown another room, which looked directly into a building across a narrow street. When we enquired, we were given a great room right at the top, which had expansive views of the city and its own balcony. It was slightly more expensive, but worth every penny. The hotel is in a great location to see Perugia. Unfortunately we arrived in the middle of an ever-so-commercial and unappealing chocolate festival, which meant that driving through this part of the city was impossible. This meant first finding the hotel on foot, then trying to find overnight parking--one of the lowest moment on our four-week trip. Certainly knowing the hotel's location, I would take advantage of the parking valet service--that is, if you too don't arrive during the chocolate festival!

Camera molto, molto spartana. Condizionatore inefficiente.

Fortuna is a comfortable, quiet and friendly hotel with a minimum of fuss. The staff on the desk were helpful on every thing we asked them. It is in an excellent location for exploring central Perugia which is a hill-top town. Seeing other hotels in the town, we were glad we were at the top and not part-way down. We did not require an in-house restaurent, bar or out-of-hours room service. We are aged 50 and 80 and it was absolutely right for us.

Good points: very friendly staff, superior breakfast room and food, good location. Bad points: dog barking at nite kept us up, staff gave us inaccurate information about how to buy bus tickets and about the train strike on 6/21/06. We also do not like being asked in the middle of breakfast if we are guests at a hotel. (We were in an economy room).

The trade off if you want to be very central in historic Italy is that you must expect smallish rooms and some noise and that is true of the Fortuna. However our room was spotless, the staff were very helpful and it is an extremely convenient hotel (the bus from the station/main car park stops close by) in the pedestrianised part of historic Perugia. Recommended and we would return.

The Fortuna is the best value for money I have stayed in in six years of visiting Italy. It is a lovely 13th Century building perfectly situated for the town centre of Perrugia, and for all the local and regional public transport from the Piazza Italia.
