We prefer the little old hotels and we use the trains so this place is great for us. If you like Holiday Inn, this will be a little too small and old fashioned.

Paris is an expensive city, so while the room was expensive for what it was, that says more about Paris that Hotel Modern´Est. With the room however we were a little disappointed how thin the walls were, and how the noise carried from the other rooms and hallway. Likewise, whilst the shower was both new and clean, it was disappointing that the actual shower head had no wall attachment in which to place it, and kept turning itself off. Overall a little disappointed, although I have certainly stayed in worse hotels.

The hotel is located just by a metro station and near train stations. Very convenient in terms of location. But the room floor had a slope, it was not firm, the shower was tiny. One could tell the room was used by smoking people because of the smell.

Story for Family with young kid: Ticket confirmed that kid less than 1 year stay free of charge, with no extra bedding. But the hotel is in intention to make money with my 11 months kid. Demanded extra money for offering another room that could accomodate baby..(?) When I show them the ticket description, their response "you can ask for ship in the room", but description of kid accomadation is provided by them in ticket and not a request from me. The say, we have not told kid can be accomodated, security reasons and something.. Finally they lost the argument and decided to give me not so good room with disclaimer, you cannot change the room (i have not seen the room yet), you are staying at your own risk, etc., This is not so good when i step-in to the hotel. Made me bit scary too. Other staffs during night are friendly.

Our room was very small and cramped with a sloping floor and the wardrobe was on a lean. The website says the hotel has been renovated but that would have been many years ago - it is very, very tired. The bathroom was extremely basic with a tiny shower and nowhere to put anything. The handbasin took about 5 minutes to drain. There was no air con, just a fan, and the temps were very high. It was too noisy outside to have the window open at night. The hotel is very close to Gare de l'Est which is why we booked it, but the area is pretty awful and seedy. We didn't feel safe walking around there. Breakfast was very sparse unless you happened to be there just when some food was brought out. Service was very poor in that they have only 3 dessertspoons in the hotel(!) and when you ask for one, you're told to eat your cereal off a teaspoon. We did not find this acceptable at all. However when we left our backpack in the dining room, a staff member kept it safe for us, which was much appreciated. Next time we would book something nicer in a better area.

Advertised as all rooms having air-con, but that was not the case. All they had was a fan and a hole in the wall where the air-con vent went, not ideal in 35 degree temperatures but having booked just 6 hours before arrival the price was the best feature.

This is the third time we have stayed at this hotel on a stopover between England and other destinations. It's convenient for arrival at the Gare du Nord and there's a Metro station right outside the hotel for getting to other stations. The area is not brilliant, but there are lots of places to get a reasonable meal. The hotel is as good as you're likely to get for the price and we will certainly use it again. This time we had a fifth floor front double room with bath, which was both quieter than expected and rather roomier than some we're had. The staff were pleasant and helpful.

I would stay again. I was there for 5 days. Being near the train station and metro is invaluable. Neighborhood is a little dirty but easy to leave it. Hotel and staff were wonderful. The Hotel Modern'Est is literally steps away from the Gare de l'Est, which is why we chose it. The room was clean and although right over the street, it was quiet when the window was shut. I believe the hotel was advertised as being air conditioned. It is not. The breakfast, at 10 Euros, is average. The people who work there are very friendly and nice. The elevator is literally big enough for either two people who are very friendly with each other, or one person with his luggage, but that's okay, at least it exists! The beds are comfortable, the linens are clean and there's plenty of hot water, which is really all I care about at the end of the day. There's also free wireless internet, which is very convenient. The neighbourhood is not great and I wouldn't feel confident walking around there by myself at night: there were lots of homeless people and panhandlers and it was definitely a poorer section of town. Next time I would forego the convenience of being super close to the train station and stay in a nicer section of the city, which has nothing to do with the quality of the hotel itself.

Excellent location close to rail station metro Paris center. Good room size comparing with others hotels at same price in Paris. Not the quietest surrounding but as stay on 5th floor it was not a problem. Small public area. If you need a reasonable price room to sleep close to everywhere is a very good option.

basic but clean rooms - no horror stories. Good if you're on a tight budget. We stayed in a triple room for one night. It was fairly small for three people - but it made a good base for us to explore. Furniture etc is all quite dated - but it all served the purpose it needed to serve. Location wise - you couldn't get any closer to gard l'est station.

Everything was as I expected. The only real problem was that they were demolishing a building next to my window, and the noise was unbareble all day, even with soundproof glasses At night, everything was OK. Gare de L'Est e du Nord are beautiful, as well as Saint Laurent Church, all very close to the hotel. Metro station is outside the door.

we had a double room with a bath. it was large, incredibly quiet considering it was facing a main street, clean, generally well kept. The only complain would that the shower head had no holder on the wall and thus you had to hold the shower head above your head when showering - we didn't have any problems with this, but others might not like it. The surrounding were a little questionable but you so close to the subway that you never have to worry about walking through the seedy area at night.

Prima volta che alloggio all'hotel.

I needed a place to spend a night, coming from out of town to see friends and the Modern'Est exceeded expectations. It is literally across the road from the Gare de l'Est. My (double) room was surprisingly large for Paris, and the building has a lift. I also felt very safe, there is 24 hour reception and the outer door is locked at quiet times of the day. Hotel surroundings are as you would expect close to a rail station, but my street-facing room was silent when the double-glazed windows were shut. There was even a minibar in the room with drinks and snacks at very reasonable prices! A small bottle of water was 2E compared to outside prices of 1.50E. At around 90 E per night (excluding breakfast) this hotel is a bargain for Paris if you want somewhere convenient to spend a short visit.

This is an excellent hotel for the dollar paid. The area, which is close to both East and North train stations made it convenient, but also contributed to the slight seediness outside the door of the hotel. We never felt unsafe however and there were many good value restaurants clsoe by the hotel.

My brother stayed in a room without windows!!! I was lucky, my room had a window, but at night was really really hot, anyway (the air condition didn't work). The shower from both rooms were broked. There is free internet in the lobby, if you can stand the cigarette smoke from the doorman - it goes directly to you. The breakfeast from the hotel... don't even think about it!!! There is a Quick next door that will provide you a much better breakfast for half price of the hotel. Well, I must say something good, so the women that clean the hotel were really kind. And the location is true, just next to Gar D'Est, but think twice because that is not a beautiful zone and, if really want to stay in the area, book on Ibis.

Once we found the hotel, we enjoyed our stay. The map we used led us around the block the LONG way, when in reality, it is just across the street from Gare de l'Est. The soundproof windows proved their worth, the beds were comfortable, though the pillows were not the best. Towels were good, space was adequate. Breakfast had protein, a plus for this family. We paid for the breakfast as convenience, though there were several options just outside the door. Old, slanted wooden staircase lent an air of authentic charm, and the early morning fire alarm gave us something to write home about! The staff was friendly, though not as helpful with tourist info as we would have thought. Kept an eye on our luggage after check-out while we were sightseeing, so that was appreciated. Not for people with issues about small elevators or stairs, but otherwise quite a nice place.
