We were very disappointed that the hotel was having extensive renovations and nobody sought to tell us beforehand. There was no breakfast area and the reception area was like a building site with very little room and builders walking in and out with building materials. The hotel thought that a free tin of orange juice and two tiny cakes free of charge would make up for this- it didn't. In fact one morning we didn't get the cakes, tea or stirrers for our drinks. Overall a very disappointing stay and one that we would not repeat again. We wouldn't even had paid half of the price for this!

The hotel is undergoing refurbishment at the moment so it is a bit hard to judge. I had a 'cosy' room which had just been refurbished, it was 'cosy' but very cleverly designed - in fact very well designed - so that it had all I wanted for one person, It faced away from the main street which was not as good as the last time when I had a room facing the street which was much more atmospheric. The new rooms had a tariff of 240 euro's which is way way too expensive, via Venere I paid 75 so it was good value for money. I love the area, close to the North Station (Eurostar) and the East Station (metro) so perfect, lots of restaurants, convenience stores and bars and so and a great feel to it. The area is a bit noisy but for me that is part of the ambiance! So typically I come in on Eurostar, you can then easily walk to the hotel and then across the road is the Metro, couldn't be easier. I would avoid the hotel for a bit while the renovations are underway (March 2013) and the cosy rooms are small (but perfectly formed!) but overall I liked the hotel. BUT.. there are many hotels in this area so maybe look around first especially if the listed prices become the actual prices. To sum up: love the location, love the main street rooms and the price is right, be wary of the current renovations and remember that cosy means just that. Recommend.

A very average hotel located in a run down area of the city. An area with very few reataurants i would consider eating in and are all expensive especially drinks unless you like kebabs or burgers. It is 6 stops on the metro from the Latin quarter where the standard and quality of everything is much higher. We did not get much help from the hotel staff not even a bonjour on our arrival. The overall standard of the hotel and its location would not tempt me to stay here again.

The hotel isnt in a great part of town however convienient to the metro or Paris station for Eurostar. The staff were very good, Eric on the front desk was very helpful. If you are a couple i would recommend that you upgrade to the larger room as it is small as most European hotel rooms. We didnt have breakfast at the hotel and all the local restaurants have very good coffee etc. I would probably look for a better area however the hotel was fine for a couple of days.

I have stayed at this hotel on and off for about 7 years, and always find it a very comfortable and pleasant experience. The staff in particular, are friendly and always very helpful and go out of their way to assist you in any way they can. I have noticed over the years that the hotel itself has become a little more `worn` looking, and has become a little over priced for its standard. Never the less, I wholly recommend this hotel for a very pleasant stay in the most exciting city in the world.

I liked this hotel! In a great location 50m from Gare L'Est and 300m from Gare du Nord it is perfect for getting the EuroStar and getting around Paris on the metro. Located in a really vibrant area with lots of restaurants and cafe's it is a good mix between a small hotel and a great location. Breakfast is only average but plenty of places near by. Good bed, largish room, comfortable. It is on a busy street so that can be noisy but windows are double glazed so you can block this out but I think this is part of the atmosphere! Recommended.

Location is not very stylish, and if you are driving, the street is very difficult to get to. But access to the Metro is excellent and the staff is very helpful and with an excellent knowledge of English. It is situated just above the Metro, so there is some rumbling from the trains.

My sister and I stayed at Francais for nine days in late November, early December, 2009. I was a little worried about whether the hotel would be all that it was billed to be, having stayed in Paris several times and knowing that the hotels around Gare de L'Est and Gare du Nord vary pretty widely. But we booked, relying on the reviews we read on Venere.com. The hotel exceeded my expectations and I was actually left wondering why it didn't receive even higher ratings. The room was always very clean, the bathroom was downright spacious compared with other places I have stayed in Paris. The staff were warm and accomodating, helping us find both a coin laundry and an internet cafe within close proximity to the hotel. The room was surprisingly quiet, given the neighborhood. We were on the sixth floor, and apart from the occasional siren and the rumble of the Metro, the room was as quiet as could be. I will be staying at the Francais again!

It is a very good hotel. It's very near to Paris East station. You can see the hotel when you go out the station. The next door of the hotel is MONOP(store). It's very convenient! The staffs are so kind. They speak English. We stayed in a duble room with shower. It wasn't large, but it was no problem for us. Furnitures were not old and the bed cover was very clean. The room was warm. The bus of No.30 starts from bus stop in front of the East station. It's very convinient. You can go to "Arc de Triomphe" by it. When you use Air France Bus to CDG, you can go to the bus stop by it. It takes about 30 minutes. I want to stay in the hotel when I visit Paris again!

Friendly and knowledgeable staff. Good location, literally across the street from the Gare East train station and near a subway (in the station). Rooms are quite small, but clean and the shower worked well. Definately not luxurious, but not unpleasant either. The mattress was not very good and needs replacing.

We had an excellent stay in this hotel. Very comfortable and clean. Close to train station and all amenities. The breakfast although a bit pricey was very good and all you can eat. Location for us was great. Only 10 mins walk from Gare du Nord and the train to CDG airport. Gare de L'est is right opposite the hotel and the tourist bus stop just round the corner so ideal for getting around Paris. Numerous eateries near by and a small supermarket next door. Hotel staff on arrival were a great help and even moved our room to an upper floor. We took breakfast every day even though others had said it was cheaper outside in local cafes. It may well be cheaper outside but the breakfast on offer would satisfy the largest of appetites and there is nothing better than a fresh brew first thing (no tea or coffee facilities in the room). We bought 'un carnet' of tickets at the station on the first day. This pack of 10 tickets for 11 Euros gives 90 mins of unlimited travel in the inner Paris area. Can be used on Metro and RER lines. Will get you to all attractions. Look around for places to eat and drink as the difference in prices is huge. We visited an Aus bar and an Irish bar which were well cheaper than the French. Sandwiches etc in the Lovre were below standard and very, very expensive. Make sure you take your own from outside before visiting. Facilities at CDG were poor. Items in the so called duty free shops were cheaper in Asda!!! Wish we had bought it all at Manchester airport before leaving then taking it back with us. Again food and drink very expensive....get it from Gard du Nord before boarding the train. Overall a very pleasant stay although as we all know, Paris is expensive.

We spent two nights at the Hotel Francais and could not fault it. We had a superior room on the 5th floor and were completely satisfied. The buffet breakfast was plentiful and empty dishes were quickly replenished. There was a supermarket next door and for the Metro the Gare de L'est was opposite. We are already planning our next visit.

Booked two Superior rooms, and expected better quality. The sheets were threadbare and full of holes, the covers were not clean. The A/C did not work in either room, blowing tepid or warm air, whatever the settings. The Bathrooms were definitely not similar to those shown on the website for superior rooms, they were dingy and stuck in the '70s, with ancient suites. Overall, compared with similar class Hotels, this is not up to standard.

We were totally satisfied, even impressed by the quality vs. price ratio. We will definitely choose Hotel Français for our future visits to Paris. It is not close to main touristic places in terms of distance, but the nearby metro, on the North-South line number 4, makes these places close in terms of time spent to get there.

Hotel itself is very plesent and feels safe although the some of the surrounding streets are a bit rough. Rooms are not large but comfortable and clean. Can be noisy if your room is to the front of the building. Very handy supermarket below the hotel, close to metro and train stations. Reception staff are polite but not particularly friendly, had to ask for my online discount to be taken off the bill as this was missed, however they did not dispute it.

I've been in paris several times - always in different budget hotels. This one is just fine. Location is great. Do not make my mistake to change the metro or RER at Gare Du Nord with line 4 for just 1 stop. Configuration of stairs and corridors that you shall pass to make the shift is not worth at all - especially if you carry heavy and/or uncomfortable to carry luggage. Just get out of the building of Gare De Nord and follow a simple map directions - in less than 400 metters - 3 to 5 minutes you're there. The breakfast is just OK - excelent french croissantsbefore all. My room was really verry small and tight but I was just changing flights overnight so it was bearable. If you would stay longer - be sure to arrange something more normal in size - I am sure they have options. As a starting point to "conquer" Paris as tourist this place is good - just be sure to get well acquinted to the map of the metro and try to search and follow the signs down there very patiently and strictly - the metro in paris is a landmark and a remarkable experience just by itself alone.

Hi, We came into Paris via Chunnel and stayed one night. A short walk from Gare Du Nord/Chunnel station. Gare-De-Est Metro was right across the street. The room was newly remodeled, top shelf, with a mini-bar and hair dryer. Staff was very warm and polite. There is an excellent grocery right next door. The neighborhood is urban and busy. We felt quite safe. There are several bistros in the neighborhood. The city was in the middle of winter fest and they had a winter market under a tent by the Metro. Best goat cheese ever! We took a ten minute metro ride direct to the Ile De Cite to see Notre Dame and walk along the Seine. We would definetly stay there again.

Second stay at this hotel in 10 months. Unfortunately major works at the side by side building make terrific sounds during the day (8 am - 5 pm) especially for the interior court rooms. For the rest , this hotel proves to be very good ratio price/quality and the vicinity of Gare du Nord - Eurostar is a plus.

This hotel is good value for the money. Our room was close to the elevator which made for some noisy times in the late evenings. The location is excellent, as it's right across the street from the Gare de l'Est train station and metro (subway). There's a grocery store right next door where we purchased some food for breakfast and lunch. There is also a small patisserie where you can buy French bread and sandwiches and pastries close by. The room was of an adequate size given European standards. Would stay here again...but would ask to be located away from the elevators.

We liked the lively area of the hotel, almost opposite of the Gare de l'Est. There were shops, bars and market halls within two minutes walk, some of them almost downstairs. The balcony doors kept the noise of the traffic outside, and we slept very well. The nearest metro station was just behind the corner with three different lines (4,5 & 7) to six directions. The line No. 4 for example brings you directly to Cité and Latin Quarters.

We are middle age and not looking to hang out in the room, so the location was perfect, across from the trains, easy to use the metro, perfect to get around in. All hotels in Paris are very expensive, so the price and what you get are very good. We booked a triple for some friends, but there was no third bed in there and the teenager ending up sleeping on the floor. I suppose a cot could have been put in, but it would have been very tight. Overall, I would stay again for sure, 2 or 3 nights is fine.

We had a very pleasant stay at the hotel. It was clean, we had a nice welcome and whenever we needed information, the staff helped in a very friendly way. (Only beware of Karaoke Nights in the next door bar, but that was only one night during the european championships in soccer.... ;-)) We were a bit worried about the surroundings - the hotel being near 2 major train stations - but that was no problem at all (although I have to add, that we never came home after 9pm). All in all, I can only recommend the hotel. It's good value for the money, The rooms are not very spacious, but sufficient, the hotel was renovated a couple of years ago, so it looked very nice. Sometimes you can hear the nearby underground, we never found out WHY you heard it so clearly in some nights and in others you didnt hear it at all - being very tired was NOT the reason ;-)) There is a great bakery just across the street and a McDonalds too, so we didn't eat breakfast in the hotel.

We stayed here for five nights in a Superior room (2 twin beds). Great location: easy walk to the metro, a food store (open until 11pm next door), a lot of cheap places to eat within 100 meters. The room faced the yard and was very quiet, very clean and well appointed. We used the mini-bar as a mini-fridge for our own sodas and yoghurts :-) The bathroom was amazing, with a huge bathtub, shampoo, hair drier and a bidet (!). The staff was courteous, knowledgeable and everyone spoke very good English, saving us the embarrassment of trying to use our French. We have not tried the breakfast (felt a bit expensive) but loved the hotel. Will come back. Overall, great value for the money. A suggestion: a Superior room is much bigger than a Standard - well worth extra 7 euros or so.

Hotel is located in a very convenient area, easy to reach by train from the Airport CDG (trains arrive at Gare du Nord, 400 meters far); subway is 50 meters far from Hotel and is also possible to reach the old town center by foot. The superior double room is large enough, well furnished and very nice. Relationship between price and quality is very good. I would return to this Hotel.

This was our first time in Paris for 30 years, and my wife's birthday so I wanted it to be a special stay. The initial contact with the fromt desk staff was very friendly and they were helpful on other occasions too. The continental breakfasts were very good with lots of choices, and friendly staff. Although there was renovations going on in rooms on our floor, that didn't interfere with us, or was noisy so i can reccomend this hotel to others.

My 22 year old daughter and I stayed in this hotel for 5 nights while visiting Paris in April 2008. The staff was mostly kind (the men were kinder to us than the woman) and helpful to us. The breakfast buffet was very good and substantial for 8.5 Euros (variety of croissants, french baguettes, yogurt, boiled eggs, variety of cheeses, variety of cold cereals, coffee, 2 kinds of juice and a variety of fresh fruits) but we didn't like the coffee and realized after we had already checked out that they had an expresso machine on the bar for guests. It is also nice that they keep it going until 11 am because the first few days of jet lag, it was hard to get up early! We were very happy with the large attached bathroom and the small balcony that opened up to the street. We stayed on the 5th floor facing the Gare de L'Est and could hear the trains at night but they didn't keep us up. We would often buy Oranginas and french yogurt at the grocery store next door and take them to our room. The french yogurt is yummy! The only bad experience we had was upon checking out, the woman at the front desk asked me if we took anything out of the mini bar and when I said no, she pulled out a paper that said we had drunk an Orangina on the first night and she gave me a stern look that made me feel as if I was lying to her, so I went ahead and paid the 1.5 Euro for the drink even though we didn't take it out of the mini bar. So I would suggest to be careful if you do buy drinks next door at the market, not to leave them in the mini bar because they might confuse them with their own. Even with that misunderstanding, I would stay there again.

Hotel is walking distance from Gare du Nord. Thus convenient for Eurostar. Found the map should be more detailed. Quietest hotel ever! Even with window open. Room was tiny, but that was expected. No coffee/tea making facilities and no soap supplied in washroom. Iron, board and pant press in closet. Internet wasn't functional on day we requested it. But, Hotel Francais provided a great experience for a first time Paris traveller. Great location. Would use it again. Recommended.

The people were very kind; the rooms were smallish but we fit 3 people (one in a cot) in a double. It was clean, nicely decorated. For the price, we couldn't have hoped for a better establishment. It is a great deal and I would not hesitate from staying there again.

Stayed 7 nights at Hotel Francais. Numerous flea bites all over my body from the room. Three weeks after returning home am still suffering from the bites. Room not at all like pictures - very dark and dingy. Hotel was under renovations and hall was cluttered with mattresses and tools. Very noisy location near Metro and train stations and could hear the trains rumbling by constantly, even through the night. Otherwise, convenient travel around city by Metro. Staff friendly. Breakfast very expensive for what it was. Would not return to this hotel.

I booked a superior room assuming we would receive the one advertised in the hotel, being newly decorated with blues and yellows. However, we were given an older room at the rear of the Hotel. This was probably better as we didn't hear the traffice noise at the front. We did however feel the vibration from the Metro way below our room on the 2nd floor

We were afraid about the quality of this only two star hotel close to the Gare del Est. We were travelling for a 3-day weekend a couple with two adolescents. Everything was fantastic. The hotel was nice, very clean and quiet. Rooms were not spacious, but size was correct. All things you need were found in the room. The bed was high-quality, there were TV with international channels, a good shower, etc. Breakfast was OK. We would highly recomend this hotel for those people who do not want to spend a lot of money who go to Paris to spend a short holiday.

This hotel was clean and reflect the star quality. I booked a room superior room but it was a very basic double room with an awful folding bed as the single. The room would be just adqequate for a couple and should not have been booked as a superior room for three people. It did not reflect the price. We were also right in the corner next to the lift and the place was very noisy. Very good location for euro star and getting around.

Our first stay at the hotel Francais. Nice superior room. The window faced the gare de l´est, so when opened there was quite a lot of noise, but there was air-conditioning so noise wasn´t really a problem. The breakfast room was cosy and typically french and the breakfast was simple but satisfactory according to the price. Buses, rer and metro just outside made sight seeing easy. Competent staff, but busy with no time to say good morning, have a nice day etc. Grocery store just outside the door in case of snack emergency :-)

My son and I went for the Rugby world cup semi-final. The hotel was very well located for this and for proximity to all the tourist spots of Paris (via the Metro). Accommodation at the price we paid was better than we expected, and the large TV in the room even provided a next day replay of the match!

We were staying here for the rugby world cup. The room was small (as are all rooms in Paris) and I would have to say this was a nice hotel, for Paris. Paris accommodation is generally pretty crappy and I thought this hotel was reasonably nice.

Hotel Français is at an excellent location should your preference to get around Paris be by metro. The hotel is lovely, the staff competent and biligual, providing allowance even for my poor French. Overall, I enjoyed the hotel, the staff, their service and the location. I would stay there again.

The area wasn't the nicest but it wasn't unsafe so to be honest, the savings were worth it. Staff were most competent & helpful. Breakfast wasn't great but it was still a saving compared to Paris prices. Would go back.

A delightful and charming small hotel ideally located for easy access to the Metro system and the Gare du Nord and Gare d’Lest. It is adjacent to numerous bars, convenience shops and late restaurants, particularly the café immediately opposite the Gare d’Lest that serves a good dinner at 1am! Whilst the rooms are small, as you would expect from a building of this vintage, they are in very good condition and are kept spotlessly clean. The staff were very efficient and personable. It is an ideal base for your time in Paris, whilst it is a short distance from the items of tourist interest, you are only a 20 min walk from Montmatre or Les Halles.

The staff of this hotel is extremely professional and helpful. There was always someone at the front desk willing to help with any questions related to directions, dining, or anything else. Eric at the fromt desk was great with arraniging a shuttle service for us to go to the airport. If you are planning on gettin to this hotel by metro and it is your first visit to Paris, make sure you get off of Gare de'Est station as the hotel is rigth in front of this station. We made teh mistake of getting off at Gare du Nord station which made it difficult for us to find the hotel. The rooms are tiny, however, in Paris you don't spend a lot of time in the hotel room anyways. The convenience of having the metro staion in front of the hotel was great. The only thing I didn't like about this hotel was the surroundings. It was not a very desirable area in Paris. However, with the convenience of the metro you can find yourself in the best areas of Paris from 10-20 minutes. Overall this was a pleasant experince mainly due to Hotel staff and the proximity to the metro.

We booked a double superior room and was truly surprised at the spaciousness of the room. It may have been just the room that we were staying in, but it was well worth the money. The location was excellent if you wanted to access the metro. We would definitely stay there again!

We really liked this hotel. Very close to the metro station making very easy to reach any landamark in Paris. The reception's employees are very friendly and competent. We had a family room and it was perfect. The price is very good compared to other hotels in Paris. The surrounding is not the best, but I would return to this hotel without hesitation. Breakfast is a little overpriced.

My family of four (children: son - age 13 and dsughter - age 12) stayed at the Hotel Francais in July, 2007. We booked a superior triple thinking we would have enough room with a cot but when we checked in the staff moved us into a quad so we had four beds. The hotel and room was very clean and the staff very helpful. The hotel is conveniently located across from the Gare De l'Est train station which makes it easy to get on the Metro. I would highly recommend the Hotel Francais for your trip to Paris!

We arrived before 10 am in the morning after a long intercontinental flight. A very understanding reception person immediately got us situated in a lovely and quiet room in the rear of the hotel. The staff continued to impress us throughout our stay. A great breakfast included. Good plumbing. Completely non-smoking! Comfortable beds. Near metro (and Gare du Nord and Gare de l'Est). I found this hotel on the web and chose it because of its good ratings. They were accurate. I have stayed at three star hotels in Paris that are not nearly as good as this two star.
