Cleanliness: on arrival day, my economy single room needed vacuuming; sink and mirror were spattered.. housekeeping tended to it next morning asap;) I had rm. #4 on the first floor -fortunate as I had heavy suitcase and no elevator. I also travel with tiny dog, (3 kilos!) and he was welcomed without extra charge. I preferred sampling pastry and fruit from neighborhood shops and enjoyed only cafe au lait at the Hotel Herse d'Or - it was just right. Breakfast is an additional charge of E6; an economy single with bath in hallway costs E65. if booked for three or more nights. I'm a U.S. resident who commutes every year to my place in Italy, so frequently stay en route in another budget hotel with excellent location near Trevi fountain, in Roma. In omparison with Hotel Julia on Via Rasella in Roma: Julia charges E55. (includes breakfast) for similar room w/ sink, however the hallway bathroom is large, tiled, newly remodeled and quite fab. The "water closet" at the Herse d'Or is exactly that -- one's knees barely clear the door. Economy singles at the Julia include charming 4th floor crow's nests with geranium-filled window boxes; at the Herse I had a small atrium w/ no view and an artificial tree in pot. Beds at the Julia are rock hard and there's usually noise from adjacent buildings, clocktower or loud hotel guests in coridoor; the Herse d'Or was very quiet and the unavoidable sound of other guests to hall toilet were brief. Mattress was SUPER comfy and I loved the sheets. I think most guests were twenty-somethings saving money; saw a mom and grown daughter. I myself am a writer/editor and will cover a nearby restaurant in one of my reviews for examiner.com: Chez Janou - a knock-out in every regard. Aside from the superb menu and service, the other diners were so simpatiche it almost seemed like a moving party. In fact, it turned into a party. Back to comparison w/ Julia: the walls in the Herse d'Or single were somewhat beaten by door handles; I think a renov

The room was very noisy, you could hear all night the noise of water pipes, of people in the next room, of doors opened and shut. The room faced the inner court so it was always very dark, and you needed to turn lights on even when the sun shone outside

Nightmare! Nightmare! We run away after one night without sleeping: it's not a real hotel but a very messy 'oriental' place with high noises all time. The room was 2 mt. x 3 with the smallest wc ever seen. Experience to forget. People not professional at all, not speaking english and not even a good french...

I was quite happy with my stay, the staff is helpful and comprehensiv, though i'm happy i wasnt on the 6th floor because there's no elevator. I think that this hotel is a good investment for students and people that, like me, didnt have a big budget ... ! overall it's great really and in a nice neiborghood.

The staff is very friendly but the place needs to be redecorated! This is just one of those hotels that is too expensive for the comfort you get. Small, old and noisy! Well situated and friendly staff are arguments that cannot justify the price that is asked! MM

Very old building updated for modern use. You hear when people take shower or flush toilet or do things. Internet service was out of service for 3 days. Prime location and reasonable rate.

The rooms and shower room was clean and the beds were comfortable. The staf were friendly and allowed us to leave our luggage both on day of arrival and departure. The hotel was extremely noisy. The room had a window that opened onto the central lobby area. Although on the 4th floor we had to close the window (in blisteringly hot weather) to block out the noise of guests and laundry deliveries until well after 2:30. Although the location and price was good I would not stay here again.

The receptionists are kind and speak English. The hotel is only a few minutes' walk from Place de la Bastille full of restaurants, pubs and clubs of all kinds. Very close to Bastille Metro station. Supermarkets, self-service laundrette and bakers are five minutes' walk from the hotel.

Very good location! Just about 20 minutes walk from Notre Dame. Soundproof is not so good. Luckily we had a quite neighbor except for the last night of our stay. (2 girls gossiping loudly till midnight while we were about to get up at 4 a.m. for the flight) Helpful reception. I can not expect a better stay at this price and location in Paris.
