Staff was extremely helpful; perfect location in the city close to metro/bus service. Wi-fi worked perfectly in the room unlike so many hotels. I stayed only 2 nights this visit but would definitely return to Hotel Castex. I did not have the breakfast as I felt 10 euros was a bit expensive.

An excellent small privately run hotel in a great location from which to see Paris. Two metro stops are nearby from which you can get most anywhere quickly. Rooms are pretty big for Paris. If you want a cute, comfortable, affordable place to shower and sleep and then hit the town, this is a great choice.

1.The room next door was exceptionally noisy. Even when they unlocked their door, the noise was loud and disruptive at night. Their voices could be heard quite clearly and loudly. 2.One concierge was excellent--helpful and gracious and spoke English very well. 3.The computer in the lobby was an asset. 4. The location was excellent--in the Marais and close to Metro line 1.

We had a delightful stay at the hotel Castex. I have a small amount of French, and as soon as I tried to use it, the friendly hotel staff switched into English for me. The rooms are tiny, but each does have its own bathroom with a tub/shower combination. Clever use of space provided ample storage for 2 large suitcases. Free Wifi a plus. The neighborhood can't be beat for an authentic Parisian experience - make sure you eat breakfast out at the nearby cafes. It will cost you much less than the hotel breakfast and the ambience is fabulous. Try to stay at the back of the hotel - we were in the front and the trash trucks start very early in the morning during the week. All in all, a delightful Parisian city experience with helpful staff and clean rooms.

Just two blocks away from Bastille station. I just walk to the Latin Quarter and the hotel is just behind Rue de Rivoli which runs through major sites and shopping areas. Venere said internet wasn't free but it was during our stay. They have a terminal in the lobby and you can connect via wifi in your rooms.

Paris is a beautiful city, but why do most parisians feel they have to be unkind and arrogant? The hotel has a great location and offers the usual comfort of a 3 stars parisian hotel: small rooms, thin walls, one person lift. Exception: a clean bathroom, which is a result. This hotel was the best I had in that price/category in Paris sofar.

Very comfortable small hotel. Excellent location near a Metro stop. Hotel was a bit difficult to find but if you follow the signs to the Post Office on Rue Castex then it is just across the street. We will definitely stay there again. Clean, comfortable and safe surroundings. A nice walk to most sites including Notre Dame and the Louvre.

Hotel Castex is in an excellent location approx. 200m from the Bastille Rail Station. The Paris underground is easily accessible and easy to use, providing access close to the major sights, but buy a day ticket. It is only a 10 to 15 min walk to the Seine and a little further to Notre Dame. There were plenty of cafes & restaurants nearby to suit any budget and the patisserie in Rue Saint Antoine was excellent for breakfast. Room 105 faces an internal courtyard and was quiet except for guests using the adjacent staircase when the lift was not operational. The room and bathroom were small but clean and adequately furnished. Free internet access was available in the lobby and staff were helpful, but a little French was useful. We would stay there again.

I went to Paris with a friend to attend a private concert in the 6è arrondissement (near Notre-Dame). We arrived by car at about 4 PM and checked in the Castex hotel. It's hard to find a free parking place in the street itself (no private parking and not free) so we put our car in a private parking near the hotel. For that we paid about 30 euros for 24 hours but at least it was guarded and you don't want anything to happen to your car (especially with a foreign licence plate). The hotel: We stayed only one night in a double room (one big bed) for 110€ without any meals. Hotel is pretty inside (very romantic and rustic - check their website). Our room was on the fourth floor (elevator). Pretty back view from the window. Nice price I say seeing the location, the facilities and the hotel (***). Enough space for two, very clean modern bathroom, one small flat-screen Philips TV, adjustable aircon, extra pillows, closets, a safe, small desk. Nothing to complain about. Staff: Nice polite helpful lady when I checked in/out. Guy for the night shift. Nothing special to say as we didn't stay long in the hotel and we spoke French so didn't test their skills. Location: A quiet narrow street between two big streets. Next to Place de la Bastille and metro Bastille. Safe area (we walked back at night from Notre-Dame, about 25' walk along the Seine). It was my first online booking. I suggest you call the hotel for confirmation after booking online. It takes you only 30 seconds and you're sure if you have your room. We paid at check-out by credit card.

This was a good property--a little high on the price considering the small quarters--but then it's the same no matter where you go in Paris, right? Nice, quiet hotel on a side street near the Bastille. It's got an elevator. The breakfast was good and it's about a block and a half from the Metro. There are about 10 channels on the TV (one in English) so it's not the kind of place you would want to spend a lot of time in--because you are in Paris to do other things, right?

I stayed at Castex for 2 days on my own (single/double room on the interior courtyard), liked it, and followed up for six days with my wife in company (double room facing the street). Rooms are relatively small, basic but comfortable. No laundry service but there are self-serve laundromats nearby and you can borrow an iron. This is a pretty noisy area for much of the day and night (carousers, traffic on Rue Henri IV go pretty late, and city sanitation services start early), so try to get an inwards facing room. Those (four only) opening onto the courtyard itself are positively tranquil! We nonetheless slept well enough in the street-side room. Staff are likeable, unfailingly polite and helpful. Guests covered a broad spectrum, from tour groups to business people. Location is definitely a big plus: close to several Metro lines and a dazzling array of sights and eating places. We stayed in the 6e Arrondissement last time in Paris and like the Marais better as a "base". The Castex contributed to that and we would stay there again.

Excellent option, worth what we paid. It's 5mins walk from metro; offered breakfast is expensive, you better go to a grocery store that is just around the corner. Simple, quiet, price reasonable, nice room, just what we were looking for a hotel in Europe (room space will always be a problem in any Europe hotel, so be prepared).

This is the second time within two years I have stayed at the Castex. I came back to this hotel because of the wonderful experience I had the first time. The hotel is very clean and quiet, wonderful accommodations for the price, and very professional staff. The location could not be better - adjacent to the metro at Place de la Bastille and within the historical Marais district. Place des Vosges is right around the corner, and within easy walking distance are Notre Dame, Louvre, Tuilleries, Place de la Concord, and Champs Elysee. Excellent hotel, met all our expectations and then some, would absolutely return for third and future visits. Perfect hotel to experience life as a Parisienne.

The hotel was chosen based on others comments. It was in a good location not in the centre of Paris but easily walkable, near the metro and the area felt safe. Our party of eight people didn't arrive at the hotel until after midnight but the staff on duty were very welcoming. A very pleasantly appointed hotel in a very good area. Not cheap, but that's more to do with the strength of the euro against the pound. Would definitely book again. We didn't breakfast at the hotel, there are a number of small typically Parisian cafes within easy walking distance.

The hotel was very clean, nicely furnished, the staff was friendly, the location is excellent: about 100m from Place de la Bastille. As to the size of the room, I didn't expect much, considering that I was staying in Paris. But this was too small, not more than 80 cm on either side of the bed, maybe 30 cm at the bottom-end. The double rooms may be better.

This hotel was a great find. We wanted somewhere to base a 4 day romantic getaway in this wonderful city. The room was spotlessly clean, the staff were most accommodating at all times, there were many brochures and maps available and the room was private and very comfortable. We even had a balcony view over the rear courtyard. We did not use the breakfast room, preferring to wander out for a later snack, but the staff were very kind with all other areas, recommending restaurants and organising taxis when asked to help. All this done in English with humour too. We were never going to spend much time in the room apart from at night, so the fact it wasn't as large as aircraft hanger didn't bother us. There was plenty of room for two adults to co-exist even if one seemed to have brought her complete wardrobe with her! It was a great hotel and I would recommend it to all and would stay there again myself. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.

This was my first visit to Paris and our first stay with Castex. Overall I can not fault this hotel. It's great, simply put. It's a very basic and inexpensive (for Paris) hotel that's clean, warm and well maintained. It's perfectly situated within a 5 minute walk from the heart of the Marais and within a morning's stroll along the river to Ile St Louis and Notre Dame. Breakfast isn't provided but there are a wealth of cafes along St Antoine that serve good sandwiches and coffee for less than the breakfast at the Castex. I'd certainly recommended it.

I can recommend the Hotel Castex based upon my stay there. The hotel room I stayed in was a bit small, but very clean. The location is fantastic--about a 3 minute walk from a Metro station, perhaps a 10 minute walk to Notre Dame. One really big bonus at the hotel is free wireless access. This is a hidden cost that is really becoming onerous at other hotels. Other places I stayed at cost 20 Euros per night for internet access.

My wife and I (mid-30s) stayed at Castex for a couple nights in November 2007, and liked the hotel alot, it is charming, and well located, free wi-fi, elevator. The best thing about it in our experience, though, was the staff (there were 3 different young men working at the front desk over our stay, and this is true for all of them) - accomodating and friendly, patient to no end, and helpful at the merest request. We showed up the day the Metro strike started, and because of that our train to Spain got cancelled, so we had to book a last minute flight. The desk man helped us deal with working around the metro situation, and booked an airport shuttle for us, which would have been impossible without his help. And he even - with the utmost patience and friendliness - let us try out our terrible french with him, holding a stunted conversation... only switching back to english when it was necessary to get to details we clearly couldn't handle. great location too, in the Marais area. terrific! i would certainly go back....

My sister and I spent two nights at the Castex. We were absolutely delighted with the ambiance, the service, and the location. We speak very little French but the staff spoke English well enough that communication was not a problem and the staff were very warm and kind to us. The room was a good size for two people. Although the bed and furnishings were typical for a lower cost european hotel, the bahroom was well above average. The hotel is an easy walk from the subway and well situated for walking around the Marais, walking to Notre Dame and even to the Louvre and D'Orsay if you don't mind a 45 minute walk taking in the lovely sights of Paris. Stay at the Castex!

We visit Paris at least once a year, and had been recommended the Castex on several occasions. We have tried on previous trips to reserve this hotel to no avail, as it was always full. It compares extremely well with other hotels that we have stayed in, in both the 4th and 5th arrondisments. The location is perfect, with ready metro access to most areas of interest, and there is no shortage of decent restaurants and bars in the area. Our needs are simple, so we do not usually test the staff in the hotels that we visit to the limits, but the staff in Castex seem very friendly and efficient. Our room, while well appointed, was a little small, but in our experience, this is quite normal in Central Paris, where most hotels have been established in converted buildings. We don't reckon that the room size is a problems for most Europeans, who are used to this type of inner city accomodation. We would happily recommend this hotel.

While the rooms are small (as is closet space), no one goes to Paris to spend all their time in their room anyway. Important to us is convenience of location, and the Castex certainly had this for our purposes. Our daughter is married to a French citizen, they have a child, and their apartment is a five minute walk from the hotel. The Castex is also centrally located, near major tourist attractions, the Metro, the RER train, and some wonderful restaurants. And the centuries-old ambience of the hotel's basement breakfast room is wonderful.

This was a terrific hotel in a great neighborhood. The Bastille underground stop was only a few steps away. The room was rather small but very clean. The staff was very helpful and friendly. The hotel is fine and I'd probably be prepared to stay there again but I did find it very basic. I'd asked for a shower and it was a bath attachment that you had to hold and there was no mini fridge in the room. (It wasn't advertised I don't think but I've always had one in previous hotels.)We coped as it was winter and we could put drink bottles outside on the window ledge but I wouldn't want to stay there in summer. The location was great for us as we were going to the Opera Bastille and it was just a stroll across the square. The metro was nearby and it was easy to get to all the tourist sites.

Great location, good value, very helpful staff. And it's on a quiet side street, which means we actually were able to sleep all night -- which isn't always the case in Paris.

Because of the great service we received from the employees, locality and price at Hotel Castex we rate our overall stay as Excellent. While the bed was not very comfortable and the room was small and noisy because the room was over an alley. We kind of liked the large Hotel Castex neon sign right outside our window but I suspect that most guests would not appreciate that. After a day of touring the large bathtub was great for soaking. Bathrooms were sparkling clean and beautifully remodled (if only the mattress was new) The hotel is very easy to get at from the metro and very easy to get around Paris from there. Plenty of restaurants and night spots nearby and very close to the River, latin quarter. Front Desk was very kind and extremely helpful. No problem with speaking spanish or english (or french of course).

Excellent hotel for a very reasonable price. The bathroom was modern and clean, the bed was comfy and I felt secure.I stayed in other more upmarket hotels in Paris and althouth their rooms were bigger and more luxurious the service was similar and overall I did not get much more for the extra cost. The area is excellent for walking around and getting a real feel for Paris.

Hotel Castex is fine. The location is superb, especially for the Opera Bastille, which is less than 5 minutes walk away. The hotel is clean and pleasant. The room would have been a little small for a longer stay, but for one night after the opera it was perfect.

The Marais is a vibrant neighbourhood and Hotel Castex is well-located in a quite side street off a main boulevard. The room was squeezy (common in Paris I think) and more modern and elegant that I expected for the price, the only downside of the particular rooom being some disturbance from a courtyard light activating as other guests returned in the evenings. Within a short walk there are good galleries/shops, food supplies, restaurants and public transport. That plus a good bed in a pleasant room made for a lovely stay.

Nice location in the Marais district. Helpful staff. Well furnished hotel and rooms. Room was a little expensive (95 euros) and the room a little small, but that was expected.

This was my first time in Paris and, on the basis of Rick Steves' books, and price range, we chose both this neighborhood and this hotel. If the word perfect applies, then I shall use that word. Not only was the neighborhood terrific - easily accessible to all Paris has to offer either on foot or via Metro, close to food with many choices of cafe, buffet, etc., but if we were in doubt about where to go or how to get there, the staff, especially Miguel, were always willing to guide us with the use of Metro maps, historical information and, in some cases, personal opinions, which we found extremely useful. My oldest daughter, who lives in Germany, came to stay with her three children for three days and, having been to Paris before, she was really impressed with the rooms, the neighborhood and the excellent quality of service she received. I am almost afraid to mention this hotel to my friends in the US, as all of the above may change with a further influx of guests, but since Rick has already let things out of the bag, I guess it's too late anyway. I will probably be returning to Paris in the next few months and I hope you will have room for me again. The Castex was a wonderful introduction to two 15-year-old girls who have never traveled before and now are making plans to see Paris again in the not too distant future. Thank all of you at Castex for an extraordinary experience.

The Hotel was very clean, however the size of the room was disappointing: we couldn't open the door of the bathroom without having to move the bed... Overall was OK

Having just returned from a week's stay at Castex Hotel, I have nothing but the highest praise for this establishment and its friendly, helpful staff. The hotel enjoys an ideal location on a quiet sidestreet near the Place de la Bastille in the wonderful Marais section of Paris (4th Arr.). Walking distance to at least 3 museums (Pompidou, Picasso and Carnavalet, the Paris history museum), maybe more if you're a real walker, as well as Notre Dame and Ile de la Cite. My single room was small but very quiet. The optional breakfast isn't worth 10 Euro, but if you bring Rick Steve's "Paris 2005" guidebook, it's free, and certainly worth that for the American-style pots of coffee alone. Since this is Paris, and I was seldom in my room except to sleep, it was actually more hotel than I needed. But at this price, it simply can't be beat. The Castex will be my base of operations for any and all future trips to Paris. It's really a gem.

Location was perfect especially if you do not want to be around all tourist but convienently located. Staff was friendly and if you do not plan to spend much time in hotel, it is a great value. This is more of a 3 star hotel than 4 star hotel, room was small but price is right, if that is important to you. Loved the location and staff.

We are a family of four, including one teenager. It is very hard to find rooms suitable for this configuration and Hotel Castex suited us well. It is a very noisy city and that is true of the hotel area, but since it was a very hot week, we were happy to have the A.C.! The staff was a mix, some very friendly and helpful, some very bland and aloof. The rooms were large and attractive and clean and so we felt happy and secure. The staff was uneven- two af the staff were apathetic and poorly polite, but one was a very hearty gentleman who allowed me to send an email on the hotel computer and talked amiably with us for some time. He definitely added to our experience there. The price is pretty hefty, but everything in Paris was expensive (breakfast is NOT included) and we knew that going in. The location is AWESOME and we could walk to many sites, namely Notre Dame, the Seine, Museum Picasso and Carnavalet and MANY great restaurants, patisseries, and great shopping. We especially liked the Batobus as it was a VERY hot day and the river gave some relief. You can jump on and off at will. We would definitely recommend the Castex.

Beautifully updated hotel; professional service. Terrific location. Great elevator (huge by Paris standards). Room, 4th floor on the back of the hotel facing courtyard, was very quiet and bright. The only noise came from other guests in the hallway. Room was quite narrow and the bath was small, but both were well appointed and impeccably clean. Air-conditioning works great.

Do not expect too much from this hotel. The room is quite small and location is slightly out of place. If you have limited budget, go fot it. else there's a better elsewhere.

Castex is great for the money---the rooms and bathrooms are small but clean and in good shape. The windows open and there is air conditioning (which is apparently hard to come by in many Paris hotels in this price range). The neighborhood (Le Marais) is great and everybody at the front desk staff was pleasant and spoke pretty good English. The one drawback is paper-thin walls, so it can be quite loud if the guests in nearby rooms are noisy. I would definitely stay at Castex again.

Nice little hotel near Bastille, the location is great, the service is tops also, the room pretty small but I was pretty satisfied with the stay. The italian restaurant just in front of the hotel is indeed excellent and all I would ask for is some more space in the rooms. Still cute!

We stayed at Hotel Castex in May 2005. This was our first time in Paris and it was recommended by our friends that we stay in the Marais area because of its nightlife and good restaurants. After research on this site and TripAdvisor.com, and price comparisons with other hotels in the area, we decided on Castex. The hotel is on a side street off of Rue de St. Antoine, which itself has many cheap restaurants, patisseries and boulongeries nearby to satisfy your culinary appetites. Our first night there, we splurged on cheeses, foie gras, baguettes and wine and brought it back to the hotel for dinner in our room. The hotel is not located in the heart of Marais, but is within walking distance of all the sites we wanted to see, including the beautiful Place de Vosges. The hotel itself is a cute and charming botique hotel with all the necessary amenities you would need. The room we stayed in had two huge french windows that opened up to the street, which downplayed the usual smallness of a Parisian hotel room. The room was ultra clean and the bed, although they were two twin beds strapped together) was really comfortable. The bathroom was sparkling white and not even crampy. The hotel offered a breakfast for 10 Euro a person, but if you bring along Rick Steves' Paris 2005 book, your breakfast is comped. We saved a total of 60 Euro because of that. (Additionally, the book offers a self-guided tour of the Marais area, which conveniently starts at the Bastille, which is a 2 minute walk from the hotel.) Also, the hotel is on the same street as the Post Office, where we were able to buy local and international phone cards to call our friends and relatives. It is also within short walking distance to the Metro and the 69 Bus, which goes all the way down to the Eiffel tower. All in all, we thought it was a great choice to stay at the Castex.

A really lovely place to stay, with charming staff. The room was comfortable, if small, with nice bed and bathroom. The only problem was noise from the other rooms - the walls seem to be made of paper. Otherwise highly recommended.

This was a great hotel for couples looking for excellent location, great value and basic amenities. This hotel offers no "frills" but was an excellent value. The hotel is on a quiet street and our room was behind the lobby off a small courtyard making it all the more quiet. We would definately stay there again.
