Hotel is in need of a makeover, but the central location makes up for that (in 5th arrondisement). Double room was small and very warm. Breakfast served in room, consisted of french bread stick and croissant and pot of coffee/milk, was fresh and excellent quality. Remember to put your breakfast order in each day. Short walk to the Seine and Notredame. For foodies, hotel is near Rue Mouffetard. Great cafe/bistro next door. Unfortunately had building across the road being dimolished during our stay, but in normal circumstances shouldn't be a noisy location.

Standard 2* Hotel with a good price for the latin quater of Paris. Of cause you might find cheaper hotels, but not with the same quality and not as central.

Hotel is really nice, in the center of Quarter Latin, nearby the metro station and 10 minute walk to Notre Dame, lovely area and surroundings. I do not recommend ordering breakfast at the hotel, because there are lots of cafes nearby, for the same price you can get more. Staff was very nice and helpful. I do really recommend this hotel for poeople who want to visit Paris, reasonable price.

Location FANTASTIC for 3 night stay. Beautiful buildings. Walking distance to so many sights. Underground only around the corner. Lots of places to eat. Staff very helpful. Room had balcony overlooking street. No air-con so had to leave windows open. VERY noisy - people at night and traffic in the morning. not much soundproofing in hotel either. Would being ear plugs next time!!

We just spent 1 night in Paris but would have happily stayed longer in this hotel. The location is great, easily accessible by public transport and just short walk away from the Latin Quarter where you can find a range of good restaurants and bars. The staff in the hotel were great- polite, friendly and very knowledgeable and helpful. Our room was clean and quiet - it was quite small and the bathroom was tiny but both were perfectly adequate, after all we were out sight-seeing all day and only went back to the hotel to sleep!! We didn't have breakfast in the hotel because 6 euros seemed rather expensive, but there are plenty of kiosks on the streets where you can buy croissants etc. Overall we were impressed with this hotel and will definitly stay there again next time we are in Paris.

Hotel was fairly nice and clean, would be lovely in Winter as it has central heating and double glazed windows. Unfortunately in summer it's like an oven if you close the windows and extremely noisy if you open them. So noisy that you really can't sleep. Shame though as otherwise the hotel is very nice

The staff were extremely professional & helpful. The room we stayed in was clean, and had a great view off the balcony. Being that it is in an old building that has been turned into a hotel, there are obvious problems that come along with that.. The room was very small, almost having to move the bed out of the way to open the door to the bathroom. You could hear the people in the room next to you VERY clearly, and almost able to hear people a few rooms away it seemed. Other than those complaints, it is in a nice location and there are plenty of restaurants/cafe's nearby to eat at.

Very pleasant. This busy hotel has guests from many countries. The location is ideal. The rooms are just as expected - small but cozy. My only surprise was the bathroom - not at all as pictured (smaller and still awaiting a creative plumber). Thank you for guiding me to just the hotel I was looking for (with one tiny, minor exception). I stayed for 4 nights.

For the price you pay for a hotel in the Latin Quarter of Paris, this hotel was really a bargain. The hotel is in a nice and convenient part of town, only 100m from a metro station and walking distance to just about everything. Our room was nice and big with heaps of space. There was, however, an unpleasant mouldy smell that permeated the bathroom all the time. And the walls are thin so you are the mercy of your neighbours, especially if they enjoy singing in the shower! Apart from that though, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

We had one hurried night in Paris and picked this hotel because of the location within a few blocks of Notre Dame. The rooms were extremely small, noisy and shabby, with truly inadequate pillows (really bolsters with the sheet tucked over, something we hadn't seen since visiting France in the 1970s. The breakfast, while delicious, was not worth the price charged and eating it in the small room was uncomfortable. The whole hotel is in an old building with a wooden staircase that is possibly a fire hazard. This is vintage Paris and maybe something you don't want to miss experiencing. Also, the helpfulness of all the employees (certainly not vintage Paris!) and the location more than made up for the small inconveniences. Not only could we walk to Notre Dame, we could have walked to many other historical sites if we had only had time. We will stay at this hotel again but have breakfast at one of the numerous cafes in the area rather than in the hotel. If you require luxury, don't go here. If you location combined with a good price is the important thing for you, you won't be disappointed.

An excellent location in the Latin Quarter with quite a few major attractions within walking distance. Stayed a total of 5 nights and the price was exactly that which was reserved on Venere. Very nice restaurant attached to the Hotel with a variety of café’s, restaurant’s grocery stores, sandwich shops, bakeries etc… scattered throughout the area. A large variety of food categories with very reasonable prices. Passed on the in-room breakfast since food was a plenty all around. Great area to walk around regardless of the hour. There are two Metro stops minutes away with one being only a block away making it easy to see any point in the city. Stayed in a room on the second floor with a nice balcony. Convenient in the fall weather since there is no in room refrigerator, we were able to store perishables and soft drinks on the balcony. Room was adequate size, a bit dated but no complaints especially when the main purpose is to sleep and shower. Staff was friendly, but find out when they lock up at night if you stay out late. Would stay here again with the exception of the warm months due to the fact of no room refrigerator and no air conditioning. Even with the doors to balcony open, street noise may be an issue.

Would recommend this for very low budget or student travellers. The rooms are really small with paper thin walls - you could even hear everytime the room above flushed their toilet as there was a pipe going through our bathroom which it flowed down! Not very pleasant. Still - the location of the Hotel is excellent and the staff were very friendly and welcoming.

The hotel is in a very convenient location to see sites by rapid transit or by foot if you are a little more adventurous. Boulangeries and restaurants are plentiful in the neighbouring blocks around the hotel. The room smelled a bit smoky when I first checked in. I inquired about switching to a non smoking room and was told that they don't differentiate between the two. I left the window open a fair bit and it seemed to make a big difference. The sound of closing doors and people stomping up the stairs was quite noticeable at all hours of the day.

Lovely, quaint and close to everything. There were lots of restaurants around, and a nice area to walk around. Helpful staff who spoke good English and free wi-fi available. The room was nice and clean and had a small balcony with a nice view. Our only complaint was the thin walls, we could hear a lot of the conversations in the next room. Breakfast was brought to our room, which was nice!

Convenient location, near to Mouffetard, Pantheon, Notre-Dame etc. On a busy road so quite noisy but not a big problem. We stayed a couple of nights and met at least 5 different people on reception, which kind of backs up the feeling that the hotel is a stop-over place rather than somewhere you'd stay for longer. But no complaints - room clean, not too tiny - apart from the bathroom suite which was that pink colour that I thought I had seen the last of. Reasonably priced for Paris and perfectly acceptable standard.

This is a basic hotel in the most interesting part of Paris - exactly what we were looking for. Excellent value for money. Our room was small and clean - unfortunately quite stuffy and, with the window open, very noisy. However, if you're spending too much time in your hotel room in Paris, you're not trying hard enough! The hotel is situated close to public transport and the area is abundant in inexpensive bars, cafes, brasseries and creperies. Many major sights are within easy walking distance, and others easily reached by Metro. The staff members at the hotel were helpful and friendly, their English impeccable, and nothing was too much trouble. I highly recommend this hotel for a short stay in Paris (bring earplugs). For anything longer than 3 nights, an apartment is more appropriate.

We stayed here for one night on our last night in Paris and were a little disappointed with the hotel (cleanliness was an issue(stains on towels)- It is an old, no frills hotel-the location is great, the hotel is not. This was the first 2 star hotel we stayed at while travelling in Europe so perhaps it was in line with 2 star standards, but overall we would not stay here again.

Carino, silenzioso, senza troppe pretese. The day staff was very nice and welcoming. The night staff was not attentive at all. There are many types of rooms within this hotel with the same price. We booked 2 double-room with the price of $98. One has no A/C and has very old carpet while the other one has A/C with laminated floor. Room is small but clean. The hotel is very close to metro station (only 1 block of walking) and in walking distance with Notre Damme Catherdal. There is an open-air market on Sunday near by the hotel. Was not sure what to expect from reviews, but decided to risk it. Room ok, slightly cramped as there were 3 of us. Big dark headboard and wardrobe did not help impression.Double glazing excellent, but had to open it first night as we were hot (in February!)Beds comfortable, TV high up on bracket was a bit of a neck strainer. Bathroom clean and refurbished, but not much room on the loo for those with ample backsides! We took breakfast at the cafe on the corner (Royal Jussieu) slightly cheaper, and more spacious surroundings than would have been in our room and a choice of menu if required. Crepe shop opposite was open all hours for late night snacks. A very good area for access to sights - we were on a church organ crawl- and restaurants. My son had a run-in with one member of staff who demanded the room key from him when he went out alone, leaving us in the room. The lift is very small, and there was a stool in it in the mornings, which did not help.As we were out and about we did not spend that much time in the room, so it was adequate.

The hotel was actually in a great location. Close to the metro and right by the Notre Dame. The street leads onto the Isle St Louis. The room was small, but we are in Paris, i have yet to see a spacious room. THe bathroom as okay, but the beds were not too comfy. The only real problem we had was the noise. Someone either next to us or under us were talking very loud. It felt like they were in our room. We had to get up early in the morning to get to the airport and this went on until about 2am. I think the sound traveled through the heater. I would have to say that i probably will not stay here again, but the stay was not disappointing. It was mostly pleasant. The employees were very helpful and spoke English very well.

The place is near a metro, too bad that during our first two days there was a strike that we took a long walk before finding the hotel. The rooms have dark interiors which made it look small. We decided to stay in the Quartier Latin for this trip, and found the Cardinal hotel to be fine for our needs. It's in a great location (very close to St Michel, which has a number of Metro and RER trains). The rooms are nice -- small, but that's typical for Paris. Reception/concierge are fluent in English and friendly. Breakfast is optional and served in our room (we never went for it). Bathrooms are a little dingy, but nothing to worry about. In sum, a classic Parisien 2* hotel, at a good rate and in a good location.

10/22-11/3/07 We had a great stay at Royal Cardinal. It is 1 block from the Cardinal Lemoine metro station and a quick walk to Place Maubert, Blvd St Germaine, and Notre Dame. If you're planning to stay more than a couple of nights, you may want to take soap and a wash cloth or mitt--the former supplied is inadequate for bathing and the latter not provided. The lift is small, but quick and effective to move heavy luggage. The cleaning people can be noisy in the mornings and there are no "Do not disturb" signs to hang outside one's door. The front desk staff is friendly and helpful. We found the beds a little too firm and the pillow roll uncomfortably small. Through Venere, we paid 95 euros/night + 1 euro tax. Overall, it was a safe, clean, well-located place to stay at a reasonable price. Thank you!

The rooms are a little small but for the price you get a more than adequate room in an excellent location. It's close enough to the heart of the Latin Quarter to be very convenient but far enough away to avoid all the bustle. The staff were friendly and provided excellent service. We were staying at the Au Royal-Cardinal Hotel during 5 days. The hotel, our room on the second floor, bathroom and everything in the building was very small, but we hade a very big private balcony, it was about 6 meters long with a lot of flowers and we could see three streets. You don’t come to Paris to stay in the room, so we were satisfied with our room. Desk staff was always very helpful with our enquiries. As far as soundproof windows so it was true, but the walls were very thin and we could hear everything what was going on at our neighbour’s room. The hotel has a great location. We walked almost all the time. Downstairs there was a nice quite restaurant where we could have our breakfast, dinner or just spend evening with a couple of drinks. I have only one complain - We requested shuttle service from/to the airport, but nobody met us and we had to take a cab. The lady at the desk told us that they didn’t have this service. But they did. Later we found information about shuttle service on her desk. But it was too late to make a reservation. Otherwise we are pleased with our stay at the Au Royal-Cardinal Hotel.

Given how expensive Paris hotels are in summer, and given this ones excellent location in the Quartier Latin, close to 2 metro stations and 10 mins walk from Notre Dame, this hotel is good value for money. The rooms have old, tatty wallpaper and tawdry furnishings and dont create a very romantic atmosphere, but its practical and central. The rooms and bathrooms are tiny. Staff are mostly lovely and helpful.

Good hotel, we paid 90Euro for our room. However, after going there, I realized that it may be a better idea to book hotels at the 5th arrondsment. Prices were the same, but those in 5th quarter were closer to the center of activity in Latin Quarter. Most stuff is around St. Michel and St. German intersection. Au Royal-Cardinal was about 10-15 min walk from there. Rooms are spacious by Paris standards. They gave us the room with a big balcony on the 2nd floor. We had balcony access both from bathroom and bedroom. It was pretty One thing I didn't like about our hotel: They never changed our pillowcases for 3 nights we stayed even though I specifically asked them to do so.

I think the hotel was expensive for what it was, considering the size of the room and the fact that there was no airconditioning. However, I know that hotels in that area are all similar in price and size. Some others are airconditioned however.

Everything I had requested online was provided! We had regular pillows in the room and a balcony overlooking the street. It was near the metro and could get to anywhere in Paris from there. Restaurants were very near and a grocery store too.

The Au Royal-Cardinale was great. It was handy to the St-Michel Metro and RER, the rooms were clean and spacious and had been recently remodelled. (I had a double with shower and toliet on the 3rd floor for 95 EUR). The room was very quite and the staff helpfully when I asked for a square pillow. I thought it was very good value in the context of a few of the stays I had in large Italian cities later on my trip. I would recommend the hotel to anyone and I will definitely look to stay here next time I am in Paris. There is a small mum and pop grocery store near by for a piece of fruit and a drink and a crepe stand across the road. It is safe to walk in the area after dark.

Was happy with the size and quality of the room - in fact we booked one of the cheaper rooms and ended up with a more expensive one I think so got a bargain. Room and bathroom both plenty big enough for 2 adults, they had large french windows overlooking the street - not particularly busy by city standards but enough noise to disturb us country folk who aren't used to traffic noise. Breakfast was 6 euros extra per person and was brought up to your room - piece of bread and croissant each, tea/coffee/hot choc - order the night before. Convenient if you like breakfast before you start your day but not great value. Good situation - just round the corner from Cardinal Lemoine (closest) and Jussieu metro stops - but only 5 mins brisk walk from Notre Dame, Latin Quarter sights (rue Mouffetard , Pantheon). For a city centre 2* it exceeded expectations. I can recommend a cozy little restaurant a couple of minutes away just along rue Jussieu toward the metro stop called "Au Buisson Ardent" 29 euros 3 course menu had some interesting high-quality dishes - much better value than the overpriced touristy brasseries which abound in the Latin Quarter and the islands.

Very good location in the Latin Quarter. Excellent price given the location and quality of rooms. The only complaint is that on the first night we weren't provided with pillows (just the decorative roll in the room which doesn't work as a pillow for two pillow). When I asked the night clerk about it, he was very rude and somewhat hostile, saying that he didn't have the key to the closet with the pillows and therefore it wasn't his problem. He seemed much more interested in sitting and smoking cigarettes with his buddies than attending to guests. The other staff persons (both the day reception and the cleaning staff) were very pleasant and helpful. Would recommend to stay here.

I would not go back. I think that for the same price there are better alternatives

The hotel was conveniently located a few blocks from the hubbub of the Latin Quarter. We came in to Charles De Gaulle and took the RER to St Michel-Notre Dame station and could have connected to a metro line closer but we walked and it was no big deal. We were up on the 6th Floor, minimising the street noise, and with a little balcony which was great for hanging out a bit of handwashing to dry. The room was small (standard Paris issue) but we had a proper double bed - not 2 singles pushed together like we had experienced everywhere else - great! There was a big bolster on the bed and no pillows and so not too comfortable on the first night. But the next day pillows magically appeared. All in all, great value for money.

All the staff were friendly and helpful. The room was nice, and fair for the cost. It was a great location. We were very happy; we would return and stay there again. The only 2 problems were noisy people outside our room at 7:30 in the morning twice -- i don't know if they were guests, or breakfast service or what. Also, we asked for a wakeup call, and they forgot. But this was minor, the overall experience there was very good. We have stayed in most of the capitals of Europe in 2* hotels and this was far better than most.

Some plumbing issues in the bath tub. The water is slow to drain. Otherwise, great location and appropriate price.

The hotel is close to two metro stations and there are a lot of restaurants in the area. Also a market right next door. Even though the rooms are small they have everything is needed. The algerian receptionist is very friendly and helpfull.

Great location. While the rooms are small and the bathrooms smaller, who cares as you are in the ideal location in the heart of the Latin Quarter. You're in Paris - you shouldn't be in your room!

Saludos

In spite of a good price for the location, I cannot overlook and forgive a fresh blood stain on the underside of the bedspread. It was a clear indication that the bedspread was not washed between guests. That was the most revolting experience I have had in a hotel room. In addition the heat did not work on the first night and I lost a few hours of sleep. The problems with the bedspread and heat were corrected the next day and accompanied with apologies but I would not stay there again.
