This was one of my most pleasant stays in Tuscany! I'm sorry I didn't write down their names, but the daughter and mother team at Hotel Picchio make you feel like you are visiting family. The mother is an enthusiastic source of tourist info....she obviously loves her town. Breakfast is in a cozy, lodge type of room, and so plentiful....eggs, sausages, yogurt, cappucino and much more. My room was in the newer wing across the street and was quite large....newly done. A balcony that would be nice during warm weather. Orvieto is a charming town that I would definitely visit again....and stay at Hotel Picchio. The Duomo is worth seeing here, and just wandering the charming streets with incredible views. We hiked the path above the hotel into town......strenuous, but I'm 65 and managed it!

The kindness of the hostess, the proximity of the funicular, the homemade cakes for BKF made our one night stay very pleasant. The room and the bathroom rather small for American standard but that is the way it is in Italy ! Orvietto is a very nice town, quieter than Sienna, the cathedral, superb. I would recommend this hotel any time.

I had to kill 4-5 big black flying insects inside my room. We traveled with our 1-yr old son and even though we have asked for a crib in advance (even paying for it) they said they haven't any available (or at all?). We stayed in an annex which is located in the front of the main building. It seemed brand new. The location was very close to the train station and funicular. There is a steep walk up to the property. Staff is friendly. The breakfast is extra and it is not that great, I suggest having breakfast in a BAR somewhere else in Orvieto. The place is not bad in general, but I'll give a shot somewhere else next time in Orvieto.

Friendly staff, decent sized room for Europe. Great location--close to train station and to the skyride that gets you up to the city. Maybe a little pricey for the room, but then again, Italy isn't cheap. I'd stay again.

Hard mattresses and pillows (seems to be the standard in Italy). Except for that: a nice place to stay if you don't want to pay extra for a hotel in medieval Orvieto.

We really enjoyed our stay at Hotel Picchio. The room was spacious with a nice terrace. The location was very close to the train station and funicular. There is a steep walk up to the property. Giovanna is a fantastic hostess. The breakfast is 5 euro extra but Giovanna hand makes all the cakes and jams.

We stayed at Picchio for one night before moving on to Rome, I wish we had just stayed here for two more days and visited Rome by train from the very nearby rail station. The hotel is very close to the funicular that takes you up to Orvieto, so leave your car in the hotel garage and don't waste time trying to park. The rooms were very clean and the breakfast great. Together with the staff being very pleasent and helpful I would definitely recommend this hotel.

A very good "hotel". We stayed in an annex which is located about 50m from the main building. It seemed almost brand new and the rooms were superb. The feel of the annex was of a villa/guest house rather then of a hotel. The hotel is a 2-3 minute walk from the train station at the foot of Orvieto. The bus service from the train station to Orvieto runs every 20 minutes (and only takes about 3-4 minutes to get to Orvieto). The one drawback was that breakfast was not included in the price, not that I minded because the pice of the rooms was excellent, however, if you wanted breakfast the price depended on how much you ate.

This hotel was perfect; it was extremely clean, very quiet, comfortable, and affordable. The owners were very welcoming and hospitable. The breakfast had a wide range of choices including homemade cakes and pies. I was in Orvieto for only 1 night; however, I would have stayed longer at this hotel if I had the chance. I am very pleased with Hotel Picchio.

THIS WAS OUR FIRST TIME TO VISIT ORVIETO SCALO. WE WERE PLEASANTLY SURPRISED AT THE WARMTH AND ACCESSABILITY OF THE HOTEL TO THE FUNICULAR. THE STREET WAS EASY TO FIND, ATE AT TWO NEARBY RESTAURANTS, EASY WALK TO HOTEL. WE WERE NOT CHARGED TO PARK OUR CAR IN FRONT OF THE HOTEL. WE STAYED TO DAYS AND NIGHTS.

I chose this hotel because of the good reviews and I wasn't disappointed. I stayed in the new annex across the road where the rooms are very clean, spacious and comfortable. I had a balcony with a view of The Rock. The noise from the stairwell is a bit annoying but the surroundings are very pleasant. The hotel is only a 5 minute walk to both the train station and the funicular that takes you to the historical centre. The breakfast was sufficient and only cost an extra 3 euro.

Great accommodation as reviewed by previous guests. The hill isn't a problem, especially in Orvietto/Umbria. Fourth floor not a problem either. Breakfast not included in price. But they gave us free garaging due to low season. Couldn't fault it.

No luxury, but really nice little hotel right below the rock and historic city wall of Orvieto. It takes about 15 to 20 minutes to get up the steeply slope, a little less to get down again. ;-) The path is dark at night, but I had a good torch hence it was no real problem. Those who do not like walking can use the funicular, which is less than 5 minutes away. What I enjoyed most was breakfast, as it was much better then one can expect for the price. The landlady bakes the cakes herself and brews fresh Italian coffee, both Espresso and Cappuccino, on demand. In general all was at least like one can expect from the hotel category, most was better. WLAN was free and of excellent quality. They just started the service, so they might charge for it later, better ask for it.

The hotel is near the train station and you need to take a steep walk or cable train to get to the historical centre but it takes no more than 20 minutes overall, so it's not a big hassle. The breakfast is excellent, and people very helpful.

Nice hotel at very reasonable rate. I stayed 3 nights in the annex across the street. The room was spacious. The breakfast was extra for me but the choice was adequate for €5. One drawback was that you could hear other people coming and going from their rooms. This is a minor thing though as the price for the room was very competitive and the main reason why I chose this hotel. I would stay here again if in Orvieto.

The rooms we had were located across the street and were very spacious and well-equipped. The breakfast was amazing---freshly baked tarts and cakes, fresh fruit--the pears from the owner's tree were the best I've ever tasted. Toast was provided on request as well as coffee, tea and juices. The atmosphere was friendly and warm. It was one of our most favorite hotels throughout our travels in Italy. We loved Orvieto and will return....and we'll stay, again, at Hotel Picchio.

We stayed here for our first night in Italy and it was a good choice. Took the train from Rome and walked from the Orvieto Stazione to the Picchio in about 8 minutes, the last few hundred feet were up the steep road that the hotel is on. Our room was in the newer building across the street from the office and was clean and relatively quiet. Also, we had a small balcony with a table and chair and a view down the street. The good: location in town is convenient to the funicular station, which goes up the hill to the old walled city (a must see). Good value for a clean, quiet room. The not so good: lacks an elevator for luggage transport to the upper floors, although the nice lady who showed us to our room assisted in carrying one of our bags up. Breakfast not included in rate as it was in the other places we stayed during our trip. Would stay at Picchio again.

It is unacceptable to charge an extra-fee of 5 euro for the air con. thats really unusual for a hotel in this area (and we had over 40 hotels the last 3 years). the footwalk to the city was over a very steep rock wall and therefore not possible becaus to dangerous in the evening. poor possibilities to have a dinner nearby the hotel.

Ottimo pernottamento, molto comodo nella sistemazione. La posizione è strategica per chi non è automunito, in quanto la stazione ferroviaria di Orvieto Scalo e la funicolare per salire al centro storico distano pochissimi passi dall'hotel.

Hotel Piccio is a small family owned and managed hotel that has been in operation under the same ownership for more than 50 years. The owners are most welcoming, friendly and helpful responding to questions and offering advice. They have an adequate command of English, but we preferred to try our Italian and had a lot of fun in the process. The hotel is in Orvieto Scala at the foot of the cliffs that surround Orvieto proper, but the railway station is a short walk, as is the feniculare to Orvieto. Our room was modern and spacious with good facilities including airconditioning and a large balcony dripping with summer flowers in pots. There was some street noise but with the double glazed windows/doors closed this was not a problem. The hotel only serves breakfast, and we chose its substantial offerings over the coffee and brioche favoured by the local bars. There were apricots and plums from the hotel garden, cereal, bread and pastries and prociutto and cheese and excellent coffee. This hotel is not the Ritz, but if you want value for money, to meet some delightful locals, and convenience to Orvieto, you can not do better.

Hotel Picchio was very easy to find. The roads are well signposted. We ended up on a steep street with the hotel on your left. A very nice and friendly woman signed us in and showed us where to park the car(garage for a few euros/night, or free outside). We got a very nice room(nr. 311?) in an annex opposite the hotel. Clean and cosy with a balcony facing the street(no traffic), the Orvieto cliff above us to the right and Orvieto Scalo under us to the left. Perfect for a glass of wine! The breakfastroom was in the hotel and the breakfast was typical italien: fresh cakes every morning, but also yoghurt, coffee and tea. The owner? was a very nice lady who made the coffee and gave us usefull hints of where to go. Overall,a very pleasant stay! We can most certainly recommend this hotel, and if we return to Orvieto, this is the obvious choice.

We asked (and received) a balcony room which offered fantastic views of the steep street below and the hills above. Free parking was available outside, and it was about an 8 minute walk to the funicular to Orvieto. A neighbor lady even brought us a bowl of fresh strawberries from her garden. :)

This hotel is close to the railway station at the bottom of the hill to Ovieto. To get there you need to take the funicular close by or a bus. We have walked up and down to Ovieto but it's a good 45 minute climb. First time we stayed here was because of a train strike and we wanted a hotel close to the railway station.

We arrived tired after long flights from Australia broken by a less-than-satisfactory overnight stay in Dubai. The hill leading up to the hotel was difficult for me and stirred up my angina. However, the room was light, clean and spacious and the balcony overlooking the street, and with a view up to the old town, was lovely and relaxing. We had only two nights at the Picchio but we enjoyed our stay and loved the day we had, via the funicular, in the old city, which is a special place with lovely streets and a magnificent cathedral. We were very comfortable and appreciative of the hotel. After the second night we had the hotel breakfast which, despite unfavourable previous reviews, we found to be really adequate and good value at the modest extra charge. We asked for some help because of my difficulties with bags and the hill and were delighted with the response. The manager's husband helped us pack the bags in his car, drove us to the station and even helped load the cases on to the train. We were very grateful and this was only the final act of kindness and consideration shown by management. We would recommend this hotel unreservedly for the traveller to Orvieto. We normally stay in self-catering apartments for a week at a time. Obviously, a hotel room has no cooking facilities, but in all other respects our room did not suffer by comparison to many apartments we have stayed in for size and comfort. If we go back to Orvieto we will certainly choose to stay at the Picchio.

We stayed only for one night so our experience is limited. Where accommodated in an annex across the road, with no lift. Acually it is a block of flats turned into a hotel. Did not have breakfast in hotel as it was not included in the price. My only complain is that the trash ccllectors come at about 5am making quite a bit of noise with emptying the bring-in-site bins. Something the hotel cannot control. Do not think will go to the hotel again.

This hotel is so convenient to the train station! If we had to do it over, we may have spent a bit more to get a hotel at the top of the hill town, however. The tram up was under construction and we had to ride the bus up and back each time. Also, most of the restaurants and areas of interest are at the top and there is not a lot happening at night down where we stayed. We never did figure out where the trail was to hike up. But the service was great and the staff very friendly. The room we had included a wonderful balcony with flowers and our own small table. Extremely clean, although a bit noisy in the hallways outside our room. Overall, a great value for the services and location.

We had an excellent experience at Hotel Picchio. We arrived on the train from Rome. It was easy to find and a short walk from the station. Look carefully for the sign directing you up the street, you turn just before the street light. The owner was very helpful and our room was clean and pleasant. The only drawback was the dog that lives across the street barked a lot, but not late at night. It was cold and we had to ask to have the heat turned on. Breakfast is not included in the price but the owner baked lovely cakes and with cappuccino and yogurt and juice the 6 Eu was worth the price on a Sunday morning. We left the next morning on the train again. I would definately recommend the Hotel, especially if you are arriving by train. One precaution, if you take the Funicular to the town of Orvietto be certain of when it stops running. We had a long dinner and the tram was closed, we were very lucky to get the last bus down the mountain. It would be impossible to walk down in the dark. Orvietto is fascinating and the Duomo is beautiful. The beds were firm but very comfortable.

As described on the Venere site, the hotel was located closely to the train station (approx 750m - there is a Service station and all you have to do is cross the road and then you see the sign of the hotel..from then you walk uphill and the hotel is halfway). Orvieto can then be reached by the Funicolare service which is provided daily until 8.30pm (after this hour a bus does the trip every 15 - 20mins). The funiculare is situated behind the train station and each trip costs €1.9 which includes also the bus which then takes you to Pza Duomo at the heart of Orvieto. Brakfast is not included in the price and costs €5. I don't think it was worth it given that it only consisted of pre packaged biscuits and other sweets. (no toast or any kind of juice). The only highlight was the apple pie that the Signora prepares each morning. Delicious! The rooms were very clean an quite spacious and the bathroom was recently refurbished. All in all the relationship between quality and price was good enough and I would suggest this hotel to other fellow travellers.

Friendly welcome and helpful. Make sure you tell them when you intend to arrive. Very spacious rooms. Breakfast reasonably priced and xery adequate. I highly advise to use GOOGLE EARTH or equivalent to familiarize yourself with direction and location. Orvieto is a very neat mountain-top city. The Pope's lived there before the Vatican was built. Mid September has cool nites so A/C not needed but no screens on windows and no mosquitos, however mid-summer may be a different situation. Overall very nice stay at Picchio, very clean and excellent price and I would recommend it.

This hotel is conveniently located within walking distance of Orvieto. The rooms were extremely clean with private balconies. Almost like renting a house. A word of caution: I had trouble sleeping due to the noise outside in the early morning. The hotel charged extra for parking, breakfast, and air conditioning. We opted to not get the air conditioning, meaning we had to keep windows open, making it noisy.

We stayed in this hotel for 1 nigth traveling to the Amalfi coast. It was excellent. We choose this hotel for the location. The highway and the busstation nearby. Breakfast was not included and we did not have breakfast in the hotel. So, I can't say anything about that. Hotel staff was very helpfull.

We loved our newly renovated double room with a big b-room and balcony (especially after our tiny room in Rome, shared b-room and more expensive; and only 1h away by train). The b/f for 4 euro was the best we had on the trip. Very close to the train station and easy to find. The owners are very nice and helpful. Also had the best pizza very close in a place on the corner and gelato by the station. Absolutely recommend this place. Stay here rather than in Rome.

It was nice to stay at Hotel Picchio. It is very close to the station but outside the center of Orvieto. Usually it is possible to take the funiculare up to the center of Orvieto, but the funiculare was closed because of reconstruction. It is possible to walk up to Orvieto (appr. 10 minutes) but the way is very steep.

This Hotel is located just outside the old city walls and the old city is easily accessible by bus and funicolare. Or, you can be adventurous and walk the foot path 800 meters. The owners (husband and wife) of this hotel were extremely kind and pleasant. At one point, when I had asked if a self service laundromat was located nearby, the wife responded that there was not and offered to do our laundry in her own home. If we return to Orvieto, which is magnificent and under-rated, we would definitely stay at this hotel again.

Orvieto is unbelievable. The hotel is located outside the city, down the hill. The first impressions concerning the hotel arevarious but finally the rooms are quite moderns and ckean, so finally it was a good surprise, comparing to the price.

Our room was new and in a separate building from the one pictured. There was no lift and we had to carry luggage up two flights of stairs. The Mom greeted us by calling to us from an upstairs window and then just giving us the key. Our room was immaculate though a little tight on space. I definetly recommend going up to Centro Storico of Orvieto. It is a charming town with lots of great restaurants and sights.

I had a little difficulty finding the hotel but other than that everything exceeded my expectations and would not hesitate to return or highly recommend the Picchio. Orvieto is also wonderful.

Excellent value for the money. Large by European standards and well appointed rooms. We were in the annex next door which was very nice. The trek up to the hotel is a bit steep and there isn't much there in the lower part of the city, but it is still very easy to access the city via the funicular.

This excellent, inexpensive hotel is to be recommended. Clean, basic, comfortable, complete with everything working, including a good sized bathroom. Excellent secure parking. Friendly and helpful owners. Inexpensive excellent breakfast available. Sited on a steep hill, only a short, brisk walk from the old Orvietto town, which is delightful. (Kids may find the hill difficult.)We (two couples) stayed an extra, unplanned night.

Great little hotel with garage facility. Pleasant staff and good room, pity no air con or fan though when temperatures are over 35 C.Ideal base for travelling inthis area.

It was a simple clean well run little hotel. Breakfast was the typical Italian hotel type: croissants, cakes, yogurt, cold cereal and coffee, tea or hot chocolate. The towels were also of the typical Italian type (they resembled tableclothes). The hotel is located in a residential area so the only noise consisted women yelling recipes to each other from their balconies (oh...so you soak the onions before you add them to your salad). Parking was ample and the hotel is located a short walk from the train station. The only complaint I have is that I wasn't made aware that I had to request air conditioning. I had assumed it was automatically included with the room. Live and learn.

Room, service and price were as promised. Friendly owner. Hotel situated several kilometres from the nice historic village of Orvieto. In this village there are many nice shops and restaurants in the little pittoresk center. When we were there they had organised a yearly music festival (live rock and swing music) and the atmosphere was friendly.

This hotel was a very pleasant stay-over just below the hill-town of Orvieto (in Orvieto Scalo). Access to the charming historical center of Orvieto was made easy via a nearby funiculare (just a couple of minutes walk away). The staff was very welcoming, spoke some English, was very patient with our limited Italian, and very kindly accomodated our early mid-day arrival. The hotel is extremely well-maintained, and our room was clean and modern. Good breakfast buffet available in the morning, and easy access to through highways. Factoring cost and quality, this hotel is an extremely good value, and we can highly recommend it. Especially good if you arrive in Rome in the morning, are jet-lagged, and want a nice nearby place (max. 2 hour drive) to recover before heading into Tuscany and beyond.

Despite what guidebooks say about Orvieto Scalo, I would recommend it as a base, and I would definitely stay at the Picchio again. The hotel is basic, but a great value and very clean with comfortable beds. It is a family operation and the owners are lovely. For three euros extra we parked in a locked garage! Orvieto Scalo is not so lovely, but the Picchio is on a quiet side street at the base of the plateau of Orvieto. One can walk from the Picchio to Orvieto proper. I would advise walking UP before trying to guess the right way to walk down, especially at night (the funicular closes at 8:30, although there are still buses).

Empfehlenswert.

Nice little hotel, we had a modern, clean comfortable room. Located in a somewhat scruffy area, but close to the funicular to reach the center of orvieto without the hassle of driving. Overall, it was good value for the money. We would return.

Hotel Picchio is a nice, family-run business. The location is a bit misleading. It is not in Orvieto proper. It is a 10 minute drive up to the old city or you can take the funicular from the nearby train station. The good sites and restaurants are in the old city, so be prepared to spend some time getting up there. Otherwise, very clean rooms, new baths, nice people. We liked Orvieto because it is a reasonable drive from the Rome airport if you arrive jet-lagged. The drive is about 90 minutes and Orvieto is a gem.

Good small and friendly hotel just outside the tourist area. It is 4Km by car into Orvieto, but only 800m on foot. However, the walk is up a severe incline and should not be attempted unless you are physically fit and have the correct footwear.

Because it was the first floor where anyone could invade over a porch from a road in a room of an outbuilding, I could not help closing a key of a window.
