Grand Hotel Italia - Orvieto

The first time at GHI

This hotel was in an excellent position just off the Piazza del Popolo. It is in the pedestrian area so very quiet. Our only problem was tring to park a Volvo station wagon in their parking area - impossible! We parked in the Piazza nearby for 1.20 euro per hour between 8am and 8pm - night was free. The room was large with an adequate bath and a sitting area separate from the bed area. The staff were very helpful and the breakfast choices broad - cereal, fruit, yogurt, breads, meat, cheese and excellent coffee. Highly recommended.

This is no way the star rating indicated. Parking was charged extra but was ABSOLUTELY IMPOSSIBLE TO GET INTO/OUT OF. The Mgr. told me i was cleared to get into the "parking lot" but on her advise, i ended up with a ton of damage on my Mercedes! She's an idiot! Our passports were left in the mailbox unattended for a substantial period of time. Breakfast was very, very poor and service overall was non existent. As far as I could see there are only four people running this hotel. the coffee bar near the front desk was never attended and obviously just for show. The "internet computer" was not free and didn t work anyway. For the money asked, I could have stayed at a truly glorious hotel in Rome not a rip-off in Orvieto. I didn't for example expect that a room for three people would mean that SOMEONE had to sleep on a roll-away cot! That's more like a pension where I come from. Problem is that their malaise has spread-this is a one shot soak the tourist area that has the potential to be a really be a wonderful place to visit. Oh yeah, the parking, once you got in was in the middle of a bunch of bushes and you had to fight your way out of the vehicle--certainly not worth 15 euro for parking! If the market is in the square though, your're screwed. Forget about getting anything from your car till you leave the hotel. I was very, very disappointed with this hotel.

I in Orvieto to meet up with my daughter who was studying there. The location is excellent - right off the Corso Cavour which is the "main drag" in Orvieto. Take the bus from the funicular up to the Duomo, walk across the piazza, left on the main drag (you'll pass the gelateria (yum) and then the second entranceway on the right is just a few steps to the hotel. I originally booked a single for 4 nights - small room but adequate and it had a small balcony that was nice. I decided to stay for 5 additional days and was upgraded to a room with a beautiful view, a patio overlooking rooftops and the bell tower. The staff were helpful and courteous. Room itself was very clean but bedspreads needed to be washed/changed which I unfortunately find as typical for many hotels. Favorite restaurants - Zeppelin & Charlies. Orvieto is a beautiful town, easy and fun to explore.

This is a quiete hotel within walking distance of all the sights. We spent a long weekend out of season, and would reccomend it. It is widely used by Tour Groups who overnight here. An excellent hot and cold buffet breakfast, and a comfortable lounge area with a small bar.
