Hotel Reviews Les Cigales

A great hotel choice... so close to the beach and other facilities. Only reason I had to give a low mark for "quietness" is because we had a ground floor room with windows open to the sidewalk which had noisy foot traffic until the wee hours. Since my husband was recovering from a broken leg we were given that room as a courtesy to his difficulty with walking, so we can't really fault the hotel for that. The manager was extremely helpful in all respects and we would happily recommend it to others.

I chose Les Cigales because of reviews on tripadvisor.com. I found the hotel to be adequate, clean and the staff to be very kind and helpful. I would suggest asking that your room not be on the first floor because the phone rang throughout the night, waking two out of three in our party. The hotel is old-fashioned and our room was adequate, but only adequate, for three people. There was no comfortable chair in the room.

The hotel staff were very friendly and sccomodating. They set up a great travel cot for our baby and had a roll-away bed ready for my brother that was staying with us. They went out of thier way to help us when we had to warm up a bottle for our baby and we had a very nice stay. The only thing that was a negative was the noise on the street in front of the hotel. Its not the hotels fault but if you are a light sleeper, you may want to request a room on the back of the building. I would stay there again.

Nice, quiet and clean hotel with a very friendly and helpful Manager who spoke perfect English. Clear directions and advice as to best places to visit. Organised a tour to Monaco for us - no problem at all. Only comment against would be that the window in our room was only a roof window - no view to the outside area - this was unexpected from the room photos - but the room was spacious and well set out and clean as was the ensuite bathroom. It was an easy and direct walk from the Nice train station to the hotel - no need for taxi. Also very close to Promenade des Anglais and cafes, shops etc. and all that Nice has to offer. Would definitely stay there again.

Our standard room was very cheerful, bathroom bright and adequate. The people at the desk were most charming and very helpful. And we liked the part of town and were able to walk to most areas of interest, i.e. old town, beach etc. We would recommend this hotel.

Cleaners used air-parfume in rooms which gave very strong smell and it was not very good for breathing. The bed was double bed instead of two separate beds (which was in the photo).

Me and my 16 year old daughter spent 4 lovely days in Nice and Les Cigales. We chose the hotel acc to comments given by earlier guests. The staff was very friendly, the monsieur at the reception gave us ideas where to go, we did what he said to 100 % and had a wonderful holiday. Saw 10 towns from Canne to Monaco. The room was very clean. It was small with one closet, but we had all the space we needed. Clean, nice bathroom. Wonderful bakery around the corner, got our breakfast fresh from there. Our room was next to the street, but not once did we wake up to any disturbing noice. Close to the beach, shopping, restaurants, railway station, airport buses. I would definitely go back.

Hotel very well run with excellent, charming, friendly staff. We had a "superior double" at the back, looking on to greenery - very comfortable. Good range of food at breakfast (no cold meats) and worth the 10 euros. Airport bus 98 stops at Congrès/Promenade, about 300 metres from hotel. Suggested excursion (but crowded in high season): Saint Paul de Vence, about an hour by bus 400 from nearby Place Grimaldi. Suggested restaurant: La Cave de l'origine, in same street as hotel, with authentic French cuisine and local wines, but be prepared to pay 50 euros per person.

We stayed at Les Cigales for 3 nights. The location of this hotel is its best asset. A quiet street just around the corner from the action and a few short walks to the beach. However, out of all the places we stayed in Europe the rooms at Les Cigales were the smallest. The beds were hard as a rock and the pillows were even harder. The walls are also paper thin. The staff were friendly and helpful which is always an asset. We traveled with a 17 & 19 year old and they had a similar opinion of this hotel. We traveled from Amsterdam to Barcelona on this trip and to Europe many time before. This was a let down and kept me in the dog house for the three days we stayed there.

We stayed 3 nights, and Les Cigales was within easy walking distance of many attractions yet just off of the well-beaten path. The staff were very friendly and helpful. Our room was small, and just off the lobby, so it we could hear lobby noise, but the place was small enough that this was not a major issue. We would stay here again if we ever returned to Nice.

My stay was made very pleasant by the staff's attention to my needs, the cleanliness of the room, great service, a good breakfast. The only thing I didn't like was that it could be a bit noisy in the night if someone came in late because the doors face each other. But that's the fault of inconsiderate guests. Otherwise, the hotel is quiet, being in a residential neighborhood in a good location. A good restaurant not far away is the "Maison de Marie" near the big main square - a gourmet meal for 20 euros. I recommend highly the hotel; I'll stay there again.

I don't think I could have chosen a hotel with a better staff. The room was small, but clean, and comfortable. I especially enjoyed cool quiet evenings on the terrace. I didn't have the breakfast, I preferred to go out. The staff's kindness and competence is probably what will get me back

As with all of France accomodation is very expensive - especially for us as we have the poor Euro rate as well. This hotel would in the main cater for the lower end of the market and should perhaps think about the price as it is expensive for what you get. However the location is excellent and no complaints about the hotel and would probaly stay there again as we only really require somewhere to sleep - but would shop around on price only. The hotel is very easy to get to from the airport as the express bus from the terminal stops on the promenade and the hotel is two streets up from the stop at Congress - 4 euros - saved some money there.

This was our first time to Nice, and as I searched for hotels I came across Les Cigales. I read all of the reviews on the hotel and thought it sounded like a quality hotel for a reasonable price. When we arrived we were taken care of right away. Our room was ready, and I had asked for a double bed plus an extra bed. I had read that the rooms were small, but we found the room to be more than adequate. There were 2 twin beds put together, and at the end of the bed was a cot. The bathroom was spacious and there was a closet with plenty of room to hang all our clothes, an area for our suitcase, a TV that received CNN, in english, and free internet service. The hotel was only a few blocks from the shopping area, restaurants and beach. The staff was very helpful with information on the area, and booked a tour for us, as well as a shuttle back to the airport. As far as noise, I had read many reviews that the walls were thin, and we did hear noise from the street (our room was on the street side), but it didn't keep us awake, and it wasn't a busy street at night. Another plus was that there was a convenience store right across the street. Similar to a 7-11, you could buy almost anything. We purchased water and kept it in our room rather than use the water that was in the wet bar (refrigerator), in our room. Down the street there was a small store that sold fruit, in addition to other items, and there was a bakery on the corner. We enjoyed having croissants and fruit for breakfast which we purchased at these stores. Very inexpensive as compared to the 10 euros for breakfast at the hotel (continental). If I was to go back to Nice I would definitely stay at Les Cigales again.

A nice location and clean, spacious rooms. However the bed (king)was a bit low and close to the wall. This made it difficult to get in and out of. The bathroom was large but almost no shelf space for toiletries, etc. The balcony was very small and the public seating area in back served mostly as a smoking lounge. The breakfast was the same thing each day and could use a little more healthy variety. All but one of the staff were extremely hospitable and friendly. Great location close to the sea, local restaurants and a patisserie right on the corner.

I have to say I was disappointed by Les Cigales. First of all, my room was just around the corner from the reception desk. So I could hear EVERYTHING that was going on in the lobby. And although I requested a non-smoking room, smoke smells poured into the room during my first night. The bedcovers are old and dirty, and the room is so small that you can't really sit at the desk because the chair doesn't pull out all the way. The shower is so small that I (an average-sized 5'4" woman) kept banging my elbows on the sides. Apparently there is a terrace, but no one told me about it when I checked in. The good: the front desk staff was friendly, although they didn't have a room available for me to switch to; the location is pretty good. Overall, I don't recommend this hotel, unfortunately. Maybe Rick Steves got a different room than I did?

The hotel is ideally situated: not in the middle of the town so no noise problems stopping you getting to sleep at night, but near enough to the centre of town that nowhere is more than a walk away. It is very clean, the staff are very friendly and helpful and although the rooms are small they have everything you need. For those who want good value for money it is definitely recommended.

Les Cigalles is located in a very central area of Nice, equidistant from Vielle Nice, the ocean and shopping. The hotel is very quaint and in a lovely building. We had requested a triple room, but had a room with a double bed and a cot pulled into it. The cot made it impossible to move around in the room as it was not a very large room. In my opinion, it should NOT have been described as a triple room. Although not inexpensive, it was reasonably priced as far as Nice goes. I would stay in this hotel again, but only with 2 persons in a double

We had booked a double room for disabled people for four nights. The superior room was not so good as expected, no armchair in the room. The wash basin was on too high level and the mirror in the bathroom cannot be used by a person sitting in the wheel chair. The double bed was large and pleasant. The staff was very kind and helpfull. The location was good. However, the staff and location are the positiv things for the hotel.

The best thing about Les Cigales was the reception, especially Elaine who was a doll. She was very helpful. The location is very central as well and there is a lovely roof garden. The room is very small and there was no place to put away our clothing. The bed was not comfortable and the towels provided were very cheap and felt like sandpaper. Breakfast was not included and this facility was overpriced for what you paid for, but Nice is very expensive overall.

Hotel molto carino, rinnovato e assolutamente centrale. Altamente consigliato.

It was a spacious room, but the sheets and towels had a strange smell. Also we were on the first floor, and you could hear the street noise as though it was right in your room. But overall a pleasant stay, the hotel staff was wonderful. I would return, but perhaps on a higher floor, away from the street.

Staff was fantastic! Helpful and friendly, and made us feel welcome from the first moment. We got a room close to the reception, so it wasn't absolutely quiet, although it never bothered us. The room was perhaps a little small, but clean and nice. Hotel is two minutes walking distance from restaurants and beach, but in a less crowded area. Convenience store right across the street. Will certainly use this hotel again, had an excellent stay!

The Hotel Les Cigales was one of the nicest hotels I have stayed at in Europe for service and cleanliness. The rooms were spotless as was the breakfast area and foyer. My daughter and I arrived very late for breakfast the first morning (10.28am and breakfast finished at 10.30am)however nothing was a trouble and everything was brought out again even though we were the only ones there. Everyone else had finished much earlier. The breakfast was lovely with cereal, fresh fruit, dried fruit, yoghurt, cheese, fresh toast with every spread imaginable (except Vegemite but never mind)plus more. Nothing was a problem for the staff. Valentino in particular went out of his way to be helpful and make our stay very pleasant. I highly recommend this hotel for all the above plus its close proximity to the station and to the beach and restaurants.

This was our first visit to Nice. The pictures of the hotel on the web site as well as some of the comments, seemed like a good choice. The price was also an issue because we were traveling with 2 adults and 3 teens, so booking two rooms can get expensive. We booked well in advance (1 month). The kids room wasnt too bad for 3 teens (main floor) spacious enough for 1 double bed and 1 single - the bath room was large and clean and a window looking out on a concrete wall. Our room on the other hand was really disappointing. It seems that only the rooms on the main and first floor have regular windows. The second floor rooms have only two small windows which can only be accessed by standing on a chair and even that wasnt easy. The room was quite dark as well. You could only stand up in one third of the room and the ceiling slanted down on a sharp angle making it difficult to get into the bed on one side. The mattress and pillow were very hard and the bedding was very cheap quality. The bath room was very small. The shower measured 60cmx60cm with a 30cm opening to get in so you had get in side ways. The main lobby area was 1 star quality (circa 1970)as well as the breakfast room in the basement.I am not sure how this hotel acquired a 3 star rating but there must be some mistake. We left after the first night. Directly across the road was another 3 star hotel. It was the same price for a regular room which were very nice. For 15 euros more per night we took better rooms.Lovely towels and linens. They where large with large modern bathrooms. French door with a balcony over looking a beautiful garden where they served breakfast in nice weather as well as a swimming pool. There was also a very nice bar and restaurant as well. The lobby was lovely. I am totally mystified how Les Cigales and the other hotel have the same rating. Is it possible that because we booked with Venere at a small discount E145 vs a rack rate of E160 that we were given this horrible room? My husband and I

We spent two days at this very nice, small hotel in Nice. We had a charming room on the top floor with our bed under the eaves. (Luckily, we are not very tall, but my husband had to be careful not to bump his head when getting out of bed.) The room was cheerfully decorated and clean. The gentleman at the front desk was very helpful.

We are a late fifties couple who always stay in a four star hotel. In Nice the price difference between three and four is considerable so we were careful to choose this hotel based on numerous recommendations. It is ideally situated for the main prom, restaurants and the train station. The rooms are basic, small but the whole hotel is spotlessly clean. There is no bar and a small reception. The breakfast dining room on the lower ground floor is small but that reflects the number of rooms. With the current price of the euro we did not have breakfast and chose to eat out ( approx £9 each for in house continental). Do not expect views on any small hotel in Nice. The front of this hotel faces onto a quiet road. The rear faces onto high rise apartments with no noise. There is a small elevated terrace area at the rear of the building accessed by a fire escape. The upper floor rooms have sloping roofs with sky light windows. We stayed in room 19 so expect to bang your head at some stage of your stay. Overall we would return to this hotel for its location and cleanliness.

I recall this hotel although I stayed a couple of years ago now (I go back to Nice frequently). My main memory is that it actually occupies quite an unprepossessing small space on the street front - not at all the elegance I expected from the photos. In that respect it is very disappointing. It's only a shop front or two or maybe three wide, and not very tall. The rooms aren't very big either. That's in keeping with what it really is - a small period hotel probably adapted from ordinary housing. It is very close in to the promenade (a couple of streets back) so it's very conveniently situated. Anything closer to No.1 on the promenade is likely to be either expensive or old and tatty (or both!). But it's not a remarkable hotel for the area it's in. Next time I think I'll opt for a cheap room in one of the plush hotels on the sea front.

We had a great few days exploring Nice and its cafes, restaurants and shops - and chilling out on the beach - everything is within walking distance. The hotel staff were very friendly - offering lots of advice. The rooms were of a good size and well looked after. We were on the top floor so the rooms were a little short of headroom due to sloping ceilings - I'd ask for the ground or first floor next time. I'll definately be back.

This hotel was in a good location for visiting Nice. Although our room was very good and quiet, we had a few friends who were staying in rooms in the front of the hotel who found the noise from the street too much which affected their sleep. So if you intend to stay in this hotel ask for a room in the rear of the building. The hotel could also do with a communal area (like a small bar) were you could meet other guests. Apart from that the hotel was very good. As for Nice, I think it would be better to visit just off season like early May or late September.

For a hotel in Nice, the price/quality ratio is excellent. Quiet area half way between the rail station and the sea. Good restaurants in the area. Competent, helpful staff. They e-mailed us regularly concerning any issue that concerned our upcoming stay. Upon arrival, we asked for help getting to Biot and had the train and bus schedules in our box in less than 30 minutes. Great service!!! We will return.

The staff was very professional and curteous (Veronique). Helped us with everything from our safe to suggestions for tours, buses/trains, etc. overall we enjoyed our stay. Good price, nice location, good rooms. Would highly recommend to others.

My husband and I and another couple stayed at Les Cigales while vacationing in late May. We happened to be in Nice over the weekend of the Grand Prix, so hotels were quite full. We had to book 6 months in advance, pay in full, with no refund for cancellation at any time. Despite this, we loved Les Cigales. The staff made the difference. Extrememly helpful, provided great restaurant suggestions, always pleasant. The rooms are small, but the bathrooms are state of the art. We loved the little roof-top patio which we had all to ourselves each night. Great for enjoying a glass of wine before or after dinner. I will definitely stay here again next time I visit Nice.

This was our second stay at Les Cigales, and look forward to our next visit. The hotel is well situated in a quiet part of Nice, but only a few minutes walk from the seafront. The staff are very friendly and all speak English, which is good as my French is not the best. Rooms are always kept very clean. All in all a very enjoyable stay, and a good value for money package.

Charming small hotel, well located between station and the sea. Staff very friendly and helpful.

Hotel staff very welocming and competent Not sure that the superior room we had was worth the extra money - the slope of the roof impacted how much of the room space was usable. The hotel leaflets suggested that all rooms had a bath - this was not so and our shower cubicle was smaller than average. Nevertheless for a short stay this hotel was good.

A very pleasant hotel and well-situated for the station and sea front and for the many restaurants in the area. Very helpful and welcoming front-desk and Breakfast Room staff. The breakfast was excellent. I would certainly be happy to stay at Les Cigales again.

Recently refurbished and decorated in a consistent simple stylish manner and immaculately maintained, Les Cigales is ideal for those looking for comfortable three star accommodation in the late Victorian end of the town who intend to be out and about most of the day – it is not suitable for those looking for a hotel in which to lounge about. The staff are friendly, attentive and knowledgeable about the local area. We considered the buffet breakfast – at a supplement of €10 – to offer good value. The only issue that we had was on check-out. Their credit card terminal was programmed to respond to a British credit card by raising the charge in sterling, calculated at a particularly disadvantageous rate of exchange: despite valiant efforts by the desk staff, it could not be reconfigured to charge us in Euros before we left. However, the hotel subsequently sorted this out with their credit card operator, so we were not out of pocket.

We chose this hotel because the building was described as being 4 years old, a definite plus in Europe. Our room, however, aside from the charming skylights, had such a steeply sloped ceiling we had to stoop in half to maneuver through part of it! The breakfast offered here was quite meager for 10 Euros, but we found a wonderful French bakery just a few doors away. We got something fresh baked at the shop and took it back to the hotel for breakfast, then ordered just a coffer or tea at the hotel for 3E a cup.

This was our first time to Nice and we couldn't have chosen a better hotel. The location, cleanliness and the helpfulness of staff were great. We just spent 2 days in Nice and wish we could have stayed longer. We would certainly recommend Les Cigales to anyone looking for an excellent 3 star hotel.

This hotel was very clean and comfortable. The location was great and the staff was very friendly. The only "problem" is that the rooms are very small (as is the case with most hotels in Nice). Breakfast was also extra. I would happily come back to this hotel though. Easy recommendation.

The extra bed (we were three persons) should have a better quality (to soft, unstable). Bye a new and better one is my advice! Otherwise, an excellent hotel to that price.

Les Cigales has an excellent location close to the Promenade des Anglais and Old Town. The rooms, though a little small, were very quiet for being in the middle of the city. We did not have breakfast at the hotel (10 Euro, not included in price of room). There are lots of restaurants and bakeries very close to the hotel. The hotel staff was very friendly and provided us with maps and suggestions for dinner. The train station is within walking distance, and it's very easy to take the train to Monaco or Cannes for the day. We really enjoyed this hotel and would stay there again.

Although Les Cigales wasn't the first hotel we tried to book for our 2 night stay in Nice, we were very happy with our 2nd story (1st floor) room and the excellent service. Bearing in mind that most hotel rooms in large European cities tend to be smaller than Americans are accustomed to, our room was the expected compact but comfortable size with a large window, happy yellow and red decor, and average sized pretty blue-tiled bathroom. The one surprise was some mildew on the ceiling over the shower (due to no bathroom fan) which should have been cleaned off, since the rest of the room and bath was spotless. The pleasant staff could not have been more helpful in answering all of our questions and arranging for our airport shuttle. We were happy to pay 10 euros each for the hotel's fresh and varied cold buffet breakfast on the morning of our departure because it was so convenient, in lieu of braving the pouring rain to walk to a cafe. If it hadn't rained during our visit we would have used the rooftop deck to lounge in the sun. Les Cigales is in an excellent location - a easy walk to/from the train station, the waterfront, and old town, as well as close to many restaurants. I would return to Les Cigales, a sure bet, rather than gamble by trying another hotel. For the quality of accomodation and experience, the price was very reasonable.

Hotel was perfect for a weekend break, although I think we were given a superior room, which was a bit larger than the others. We went out for breakfast, but only because we wanted to eat outside in a cafe. Location is superb - very central but really quiet.

The employees were excellent and very helpful, even the poor guy who had just started working there and tried his best to get the info we requested. The hotel is well-located...close to the beaches and an easy walk to the shops and restaurants. It was a bit of a walk from the train station, but not unreasonable. There are internet cafes and a laundry close by. We very much enjoyed Nice, although it is one of the more expensive locations we visited.

This is a lovely hotel in a fantastic location. The staff was very helpful in recommending restaurants and activities, although our big event was the Stones concert. If you're really tall, you might not want to stay on the upper floor under the eaves, but I thought it was charming.
