Hotel Reviews Gounod

GB, Oct 2009
Hotel Gounod suited our stay perfectly. We were registered with the minimum of fuss and took advantge of the safe facility offered by reception, which was free. The room was pleasantly furnished and comfortable. The only drawback of the accommodation was that the shower head in the bathroom was loose and there was no shower screen. Breakfast at 11 euros was good value in that it offered nice fresh fruit, yoghurt, cereal and bread which is all we look for on holiday (boiled eggs and cold meat was also available). The location is very central so that it is possible to walk to the promenade in 5 minutes, the rail station in 10 and the bus station in 15 minutes. Many of the west bound buses pass close to the hotel on Victor Hugo. On our last morning, because we had a couple of minutes wait for a breakfast table, the receptionist cancelled it from our bill.

What a perfect location - close to the train station and close to major attractions and/or busses. The partnership between Hotel Gounod and Splendid Hotel gave us access to the rooftop pool/bar and that was a welcome nightly oasis. The staff at Hotel Gounod couldn't have been nicer or more responsive. We were thrilled with his hotel. Venere got us a great room rate as well. I want to go back!

We stayed in Nice for 3 nights. Our room was very spacious, though the decor is a bit old. The gentleman at the front desk during the day was very helpful. At night, the front desk staff was less helpful. The location was good - easy to get to from the train station and a pretty quick walk down to the beach. Breakfast was not included in our room, but the room had a mini fridge to keep food, which was nice. Internet access was not free, but was pretty affordable. Overall, a great stay.

You can find free parking on the street after 6 pm and free on Sundays. We were told we could use the swimming pool and spa of the hotel next door which was owned by the same people. A great stay

La limpieza de los cuartos excelente al igual que la amplitud. El personal de la recepcion deberia ser un poco mas agradable, pero recomendaria quedarse en este hotel. Mi estadia fue de 3 dias.

Decent hotel on the third or fourth line from the sea. Public areas very old, the elevator is creepy. Very very nice room, clean and spacious. Poor view from the windows. Fridge empty, which for a suite is something unconceivable, honestly. SPA and Swimming Pool outside the hotel, but in a nearby facility. Good quality breakfast. Small parking for cars. Overall acceptable stay.

Lovely pool and sunbathing area in hotel next door to which we had full access. Handy for bus from airport so no taxi fares. Very central we highly recommend this hotel.

Our first visit to Nice and Hotel Gounod provided good quality in a good area. The quality of the staff was mixed, from icy cold (and poor ambassadors for the hotel and the city) to friendly and welcoming. Breakfast was adequate if a bit overpriced. Distance from old Nice about 25 min walk, about 10 mins walk from beach, and about eight mins walk from train station. Better restaurants are about twnrt mins away. Will return to Nice and probably to Hotel Gounod, although will research others. Room was very, very large for the price, and very clean.

Spacious room with very nice bathroom. Breakfast at room was perfect as well as breakfast buffet.
United Kingdom, May 2009
The Hotel Gounod did not quite meet my standards. The rooms (or perhaps some of them) could do with refurbishing and the mini-bars were not stocked. The breakfast was adequate. Having said that the staff were efficient, friendly and very co-operative and the situation was very good, close to all amenities.

This hotel is a great find. The staff was very helpful and pleasant. It is a nice neighborhood a 10 minute walk from the train station and the beach. The bathrooms were just refurbished and were very well done.

I found the hotel easily, following the instructions on the printout. My first stay at the Gounod was for one night only, and I was pleasantly surprised that I was given such a nice room, no.405, with a spacious bedroom and double bed, and very good soundproofing. The bathroom was a bit small, however, and the shower cubicle had no splash barrier so I had to be extra careful when showering to avoid spraying water all over the place. The buffet breakfast was excellent, with plenty of choices.

For my second stay at the Gounod, I was given a lovely room, #508, with a balcony, on the top floor. The bedroom was nicely furnished, and the bathroom was fantastic, with plenty of places to put my stuff, good lighting, heated towel rail, and not only a shower with a door but also a full bathtub. Only one drawback: the shower cubicle had no shelf for soap tablet or shampoo bottle. The room overlooked the street, but with the window shut there was very little noise, just a some vibration from the occasional heavy vehicle. The heating/air-conditioning worked well and was quiet. The buffet breakfast was good, and all the hotel employees I met were extremely pleasant and helpful. The part of rue Gounod near the Train Station looks a bit run down, but the further south you go the better it gets, and the area around the hotel is fine. There are plenty of small shops and restaurants nearby, and it's an easy walk to the promenade, the pedestrian shopping area, the train station, the bus station, and Old Nice. I did not try the restaurant in the Hotel Splendid next door, but two other guests told me it was excellent. The airport shuttle bus ticket costs 4 euros one way, but single journeys on the local Nice buses cost only 1 euro per ticket.

My wife and I have been to Nice 15 times and this is by far the best Hotel we have stayed in. The room was very spacious and spotlessly clean, with plenty of storage. The bathroom was excellent. The staff could'nt have been nicer, and the breakfast was perfectly adequate.Traffic noise was always a problem for us in Nice but it was non existant in the Gounod. You could hear a pin drop.We loved every minute of our stay here and we will certainly be going back there again, to room 304 Paddy O'Brien, Ireland

I received such a warm welcome...maybe because it was the slow season, but they were so wonderful to me, and made me feel right at home. Not only that, but they upgraded me to a fabulous room. I would stay there again in a heartbeat. The location was great...easy walking distance from the train station, and easy walking distance to the Promenade des Anglais.

I stayed here alone one night upon my arrival in Europe. The staff were a bit cool, but helpful nonetheless. The room was very clean and a decent size in comparison to other European hotel rooms. It also had a beautiful terrace overlooking the rooftops and was only a couple blocks walk to the beach. I arrived after dark, but felt safe walking to dinner and exploring the area. Highly recommended.

It is absolutely fantastic hotel with private parking in quiet place of Nice however not far from Promenade and Negresco hotel/restaurants. Staff is very effective and creative. Breakfast is good and can staisfy guests with different tastes. We were staying 4 nights and had no one reason to be unhappy or complain. In-room WiFi provider is Orange and you can buy 3 hours for 10 Euro right from your notebook in your room.

Great hotel which let's you have use of it's sister hotel's roof top pool. (mind you it's not that big). Older building kept up very well with breakfast service. Breakfast does include eggs and meats unlike some other breakfasts offered at other places. Only some 5 blocks away from the beach and from the market and maybe a 20 min walk to the old Nice. I did enjoy the hotel stay and would recommend it 100% but on our return trip we booked with another hotel for much cheaper and we found that the Gounod was a little big above average in pricing compared to similar hotels. I just wanted to try another hotel to compare. Service was great and rooms are kept clean so there's no complaints about that. We paid 150 Euro which I found out after was a bit high in comparison to some other places which I found later.

Admittedly, we only stayed for one night, but when we arrived and wanted to pay as we had to leave early the next morning, the man on the desk couldn't work the card machine, so we had to leave a deposit and go and get cash out of the machine down the road. The room was verging on box-like and absolutely stank of cigarette smoke. The shower was hanging out of the wall and sprayed all over the floor and the fabric mat, leaving the entire floor soggy and unpleasant. There was no plug in the sink. We were on the ground floor right next to the lift which kept us awake for most of the night and, all in all, it was not a nice end to an otherwise wonderful holiday. Having to pay 140 euros for the pleasure was not funny. I have stayed in much cheaper hotels which have been considerably better.

Canada, Aug 2008
The bedroom was nice with very big with large window/patio door. The TV was old and small, the bathroom needs to be updated. The area just to the North of the hotel is pretty dirty and sketchy. The breakfasts are not bad; they serve american style coffee. The walk to the beach was fairly short, so as long as you avoid the area between the hoel and the train station you are OK.

I was very happy with my stay. I must particularly commend Rene and Eric, both at the front desk, who were excellent! They were patient and accommodating with our questions, and they truly were very helpful with the fine details of tourism. If I may suggest making parking more accessible. IT is quite a challenge to maneuver the cars into the spaces because of the tree, which stands in the middle of the lot.

Clean modern double room. VERY spacious. Comfortable bed and well appointed bathroom and separate dressing room. Gap around the entry door which conveyed the noise of returning guests, otherwise little noise from outside. Staff very helpful and hotel halfway between railway staion and the Nice beach. Would highly recommend.

This hotel was an easy walk from the station and from central Nice. The staff were friendly and knowledgeable. As advised by others, the internet was expensive (also, as others have noted - typical in all the French hotels - when it worked).

In English, a suite has a different meaning from a two bedroomed room, so we were a bit misled. This is a quirky place; could be a very art nouveau/boutique hotel; instead it just makes one smile fondly at wonky light fittings, kitsch pictures, sombre wood, alloy wood screws in brass carpet strips etc. All are quite adequate, but not quite the full attention to detail to finishes. Cheese at breakfast is superb; coffee is fine too;bread was a bit tough and scrambled eggs seemed to be left by others. Pastries and ham were tasty too. Guests all seemed nice people having a nice time; apart from 2 loud Americans; why do they bray so much , including in the street or in restaurants? No other nationality made so much noise in Nice

My husband and I are very picky about clean (odor free) hotel rooms, plus budget concsious. We were orignally going to be economical and stay in a cheaper hotel by the train station for just 2 nights - I am so glad I changed to this hotel. DO not stay at any of the hotels near the train station! If you are willing to spend 40 or 50 bucks more but get an even better place for your money to stay - this hotel is it! The major plus for this hotel was the location from the beach (very short walk) and clean updated (modern) beautiful bathrooms! The receptionist was very hospitable and helpful. The people in Europe in general a little curt or abrupt (by American standards), but don't let that skew your view on life there. There is nothing really to see or do by the train station and this hotel was about a 10-12 euro cab ride (depending on luggage and whether the cab guy is willing to go the short distance) from the train station. Considering the price, this was a great place to stay - will definitely recommend it and would go stay there again!

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Hotel Gounod. We were in Room 304 which is spacious and quiet. The best part of the stay was the staff who were uniformly welcoming and very friendly and nice. A sweet touch was the New Year's card in our room. It is also in a great location: a short walk from both the TGV station and the Baie des Anges; it was easy to walk around. We would definitely stay here again.

We had a delightful stay at the Hotel Gounod. We had a corner room with windows on two sides and a palm tree right outside our window. The staff was friendly and very helpful. We had a car and the parking lot next to the hotel was very convenient for in and out driving. The breakfast buffet was delicious and we looked forward to it each morning. Although we didn't mind walking for the most part, you should be aware that the hotel is five long blocks from the beach promenade. If we're ever in Nice again, we will definitely return to the Hotel Gounod. It was that nice.

How to reach Hotel Gounod
By train
From Nice-ville main train station you can reach the hotel walking. Turn right upon exiting the station and you will see the Post Office (big red brick building). Right in front the Post Office there is rue Gounod going down to the seaside. Take this street and walk for around 0.2 miles until you will see the hotel on your right.
By airplane
Coming out of Terminal 1 you will see on the left hand side (or right if you come out of Terminal 2) a yellow bus marked Nice direct 98. Ticket is about €4,00 per person; ask for the Meyerbeer stop which is just after the Negresco Hotel,
on the sea promenade. When you get off the bus, with the sea on your back, you will see the rue Meyerbeer on your left: walk up this street for about 0.2 miles and you will see Hotel Gounod.
