The clean service is not good

Feels like sleeping in the office. Almost no natural light, no hotel feeling inside the room, only the minimal items put on the floor in a row. You need electrical light even during the day, and the only switch in near the door, no switch close to the bed. Clean but depressive room.

It is a great deal because the location is excellent, the rooms are clean, it has elevators, private bathroom and services as internet and telephone. The only thing that did not work in my room was the air conditioning which use to make a weird noise but in general it was a great experience

Clean, good central location, very good value - considering the wallet-shattering rates of other hotels in Manhattan, especially in 3rd week of September! Don't expect any frills or extras but you will be pleasantly surprised. BTW Artisanal Restaurant across the street - excellent food and New York buzz...I would stay at the Grand Union again.

I have stayed at this hotel several times. It is very functional. Could be a little bit less expensive. But I fell kind of "well" as a guest of it. Location is good but not great.

A, comfortable, friendly, centrally located hotel a short walk from subway and bus and less than a minute's walk from several breakfast establishments. Recommended. Caveat (that applies to all NY hotels) : when booking, don't forget about the sales and room tax that will be added to your bill.

Very nice and clean hotel in center of Manhattan. The only problem was that our widow view was on a "wheel"inside the building where all air conditioners were, so the only thing we could see was opposite wall. But who needs to stay the whole day in a hotel if you're in a center of NY! Overall very good

Nice and good value hotel located in the heart of Manhattan. The building is rather old but the rooms are clean and the service good. The 33rd Street metro station is really close to the hotel. Internet connection is available but is not free.

This was the first time we stayed at Hotel Grand Union and booked it after reading the feedback of other customers. Very nice experience, our room was quiet as we requested, well equipped and clean. There were useful amenities in the bathroom and the towels were changed everyday if necessary, which is unusual for a 2 star hotels. Nice reception and internet corner/sitting-room. The hotel is very well located, just a few meters far from '33rd Street' underground station. Breakfast is not served but we found all that we liked to the SILO CAFE', opposite the hotel. Negative (but not so grievous): the airconditioner is old and noisy, we had to clean the filter as it was very dirty, and the long time waiting for the lift when it is busy, because it is a bit slow.

Good clean basic accommodation. Reasonable size rooms. Located short walk from Grand Central and Penn stations, Empire State and Fifth Ave. Other tourist destinations within walking distance and also close to subway station. Cafe at ground floor offers good value food. Friendly and helpful service. Excellent value for money for city break in NY. Can't fault it.

Famiglia da Torino con due figli (21 e 16 anni). Ottima posizione, molto vicina al core di New York. Metro vicinissima. Eccellente per shopping e per soggiorni in una mettropoli che si vuole visitare e vivere. Pulito. Zona tranquilla. Ottima colazione nel "Silo restaurant di fronte". Ci ritorneremo.

Very good location, just few blocks from Empire State Building. Very quite and specious room. The best value for money! Spending time in New York is not about staying in the hotel room but to have it close to the center/subway/ 5th Avenue ;-) - so you can easily walk back after dinner. Breakfast room downstairs is quite small but the size is compensated by the service and food provided. Really nice people behind the bar and very clean place. I'd deffinately stay there again!! :-) Enjoy New York!

The Grand union hotel is a lovely hotel in a perfect location, I had no big complaints, although I was disappointed that the view from our window was an air shaft...we literally were staring at a brick wall and kept the curtains closed all the time with the light on, because no light was getting in through the window. although that was disappointing it was not a holiday ruiner as we weren't in the room that much anyway.

I would recommend this hotel to anyone with realistic expectations, who're interested in New York rather than interested in staying in the hotel room during the whole stay. It's not a five star hotel, obviously. Location is perfect - Metro close by. Korean District has the best sushi - just 1 block away. Turkish staff is efficient and very welcoming. They do not interfere in your private life - they leave you alone, which is very nice! The rooms are VERY clean, and during the night, there're NO NOISE at all! In fact, it was hard to tell that we stayed in the City owing to the quietness. The neighborhood feels safe, and the Empire State Building welcomes you each time you return to the hotel after a long walk in the Big Apple. Thank you for a great stay!

A family of 7 with older children stayed at the hotel. We spent six days of our summer vacations (southern hemisphere) in New York City. The hotel was excellent for the price. It was located one block and a half from 5th avenue and two blocks from the Empire State building. The nearest subway station was at the corner. The staff was friendly and gave us many hints about New York City. For example they gave us directions to take the subway to walk back the Brooklyn Bridge and had a magnificent view of Manhattan. Also, to take the ferry to Staten Island and have beautiful view of the Statue of Liberty and Manhattan for free. They also gave us directions to visit the MoMA, the Metropolitan museum, see a Broadway show, go shopping, etc. They even negotiate to take us back to the airport in a limousine for a good price. It would be great if they included breakfast and internet access as a compliment.

We had two double rooms. I had asked for a double and a twin but was not told that they do not have these before arriving at the hotel. The Grand Union is a basic hotel but is in a good central spot, is clean and tidy and is a reasonable price for New York. If you want a fancy place to stay this is not it but you do not go to New York to spend much time in the hotel room.

Great location, friendly staff. Small rooms. Now I know why they call it the city that never sleeps - jackhammers went all night long, every night of our stay. I think they should have let us know this when we booked. Don't get a room on the street. I would definetly go back, but not stay in a room facing the street. The great price at the Grand Union is what would make me go back.

United Kingdom, Nov 2008
I stayed here because of the location which was great, I caught the subway from the airport and was only 50 metres from the hotel, fantastic. I knew hotels in central Manhattan were expensive so I was well aware of that and our falling £ made it a bit more so! Staff were friendly and helpful, the staff in the adjoining cafe where we had breakfast were great too! I would stay here again and wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to any of my friends!

Hotel is not new, just like every other NON luxurious accomodation in NY. But it's clean, quiet and very strategically located near Empire State Building. The 33.st Metro entrance is pratically out of the door! Great for all round NY visiting IMHO. Though, there's no internet available in the rooms (not cabled nor WIFI) and the lounge internet access is quite pricey. All in all a very good accomodation for groups and families

This was the best money value I could find for Mid-town and I was pleased to find it clean, central and reasonably quiet for its location. The first night I had a room which had previously had a smoker and the night staff were not prepared to change it. The next morning the very next door room was available so I could easily have been shifted. However, the hotel was just right for the working visit I made to NYC.

They were very kind to let me make a late check out (2pm). People from the cafe next door were very friendly. There was nobody to carry luggage up. Although there are lifts, the building has many fire doors to be open in its narrow corridors, what makes it difficult to deal with luggage by yourself. The quality of the soap in the bathroom wasn't good.

Was surprised to smell smoke in the room. When asked to switch room, was informed that all rooms are the same and that it is up to the guest whether they choose to smoke or not. They gave me some spray and told me to open the windows and door. The location was convenient and the room was large. No view from my particular room but if you plan on being out a lot..... Other than the smoke smell, I would recommend it.

A multi-story hotel on a non-descript street, half a block from the number 6 metro line, and right across from a superb restaurant (Artisanal - try the cheese course!) and a great breakfast place (Silo cafe). The room was perfectly comfortable, except for the shower, whose temperature fluctuated wildly. A broken bedside lamp was replaced promptly when I reported it. Check-in was a little weird: getting from the Venere.com rate to the rate with taxes added seemed to be a slightly mystical process that produced an answer, but no explanation. (And taxes in New York city aren't that low - we paid about 17%!) Given that we were in town to see New York, not to luxuriate in our hotel room, this was a great find at a very decent rate ($200 incl taxes in late October). I'd happily go back.

This hotel is in a great location. It is very good value for a big city hotel. It is very clean and has all that a guest could require including a nice little cafe beside it that served a great breakfast at very reasonable rates. The room was a bit noisy but only to be expected in a big city.

This was pretty much our first trip to NYC as adults on vacation. The hotel was very basic but the price was very reasonable (especially compared to other hotels in NYC!). Given that we spent most of our time away from the hotel, this was perfect for our needs. The staff was friendly and helpful.

I know it is NYC, but what you get for the price is hard to swallow. The elevator has alot to be desired. We took the stairs several times from the 9th floor, because of the slow pace of the elevator and the stairs are not very traffic friendly. The location and the cleanliness is definitely the highlights. The staff are friendly. I would not stay again if rate is almost $300. Too much money for what you get.

We had a wonderful stay at this property. My family and me were very happy to stay here for our holidays in the USA. If we come back in the future we'll stay here again. The spanish talking man on the front desk was very very kind and helpful. We'll recommend this hotel to all our friends. The only bad was the elevator because the hotel has 10 floors and there is only one elevator so you will have to use the stairs more than once.

Our room had an extremely noisy air conditioner which made it hard to sleep but as it was so hot, it was unfortunately necessary. Great location in the city. Room was clean and big enough for us to move around in with two big suitcases. Can be a bit noisy when people pass the room talking as the door doesn't tend to block much corridor noise. Enjoyed our stay regardless.

My boyfriend and I visted NYC for 2 years running on holiday and decided to stay in the same hotel again. The location is superb, the room is basic, but really clean and has had a refurb since last year. The staff are excellent and really accomodating. The hotel is a stone throw away from a metro station and I would not consider staying anywhere else in NYC. We are both big travellers who spend bare minimum time in any hotel so I begrudge paying in excess of the norm. Stay here and you won't be disappointed. After all who goes to The Big Apple to stay in a hotel room? Knowing what we were getting hotel wise made it for us, and gave us confidence.

The location is very good, but the hotel did not match. No Internet in the rooms and charge a high price for use in the foyer. The shower is very bad, leaves almost no water and toilet is dark. They do not allow connections via phone card calls by the fourth, forcing the customer to use the public phone the foyer. The bedroom and the bed are very small. However, employees are quite cordial. I consider the price too high for the low quality of the hotel. I do not recommend.

This was my 1st time at the Grand Union. The Front Desk staff were VERY welcoming and helpful with information I needed--proactively so, and it was much appreciated. Other shifts were not as outgoing as when I checked in. The location of the hotel was great--about 10 mins. walking from Penn Station and a half-block from the 6 subway line. The room was very clean and comfortable. It was a little small, but not really, by New York standards. It was quite comfortable for the price! I would definitely recommend a stay!

The room was a double bed room with full bath. The TV did not work well but the staff did come up and made it better. They did not have a listing of the channels which would have been helpful..Also, there were no washcloths in the bathrooms. Other than that the rooms and service were very nice.

The Grand Union was a very enjoyable stay. It was everything the web site advertised. The room and bathroom were clean and the staff friendly and helpful. In addition, it is very close to the subway and the NY Penn Station. I would recommend this to any single travellers and young couples. The only downside for families is the size of the rooms. My stay in New York was very nice. I have one comment though...my Venere confirmation told me the price would be 825 USD, ex tax...at the hotel i was charged 952 USD. This was not a pleasant surprise, and i do believe your confirmation should indicate the amount of tax in New York. Over all - thank you for a nice site. I am happy you give me the opportunity to book hotels all over the world from my own home! thank you!! By the way, i did not receive no documentation from the staff what the charge included. I received a copy when my card was used to pay, no ticket stating my numer of days and price specified at room rent and tax...I do believe you normally can expect so....

Our first night we had a room on the 8th floor, shaft side, which reeked of smoke. We thought it would be ok, but ultimately we did decide to ask if they had another room available we could switch to. They offered us a room on the 9th floor on the street side. We had read some of the hotel's reviews and were worried about the street noise. As it turns out, we were able to sleep without any issue in the 2nd smoke free room! The room was a bit small for the price, but it had it's own bathroom and was spacious enough for the two of us. The hotel is close to the subway and just stops away from all the sights! All in all a good hotel!

We stayed at the Grand Union for 5 nights and are overall very pleased, the location is second to none and we'd definitely stay there again - it's not flash but it's good value for money and you can walk to so many key places of interest that you save a lot on taxis! Just don't ask for a quiet room as they face the backyard which is tiny, enclosed and really dark - literally no natural daylight in the room! We swapped after 1 night (which was not a problem) and got a room on the 7th floor - there is still some noise from street in the morning but nothing major and could be said to be part of the NYC experience! Be aware the hotel requires you to pay for the whole stay on arrival or scan a card as insurance - but the card reader didn't work for my VISA so cash might be a safer bet! Air con is not the quietest but works fine - we were there at end of June and didn't even need it some nights as room was quite cool. Overall a decent no-frills budget hotel in a fab location - oh and clean towels every day was a bonus!

Price and quality of room excellent. A few suggestions:, ice bucket in room and ice machine, would be nice, box of Kleenex in room, face towels to go along with excellent bath towels. Would be willing to pay another $5.00 to $10.00 more per night for these amenities. Enjoyed my stay, restaurant next door, Captains Place, excellent value, use of computer for 10 mintes on the house, terrific. Will be staying with you again when I come up to visit my son again either this year or next. One question, is the room that I had, 305, typical of all your rooms for two or are there some slightly larger rooms?????

GREAT room for the money. The A/C didn't work really well, but it blew right on the bed so we were fine when sleeping. I looked everywhere and could not find a better deal than this!

I was there in the summer. The rooms were provided with individual air conditioning units which were a little noisy and it wasn't possible to reduce the fan speed from arctic cold to a quiet cool setting. Don't expect any spectacular views from all rooms as the building is tightly nestled amongst others. But, overall, I found it quite satisfactory given the price and would not hesitate to recommend it to others on a limited budget but still seeking a small but clean private room and bathroom.
