A little worn in places, but generally well-kept and clean. Irritting noises from the heaters plus street noise despite being high up. Not a luxury hotel by any means, but felt friendly, safe and secure, and was clean. For NY in this location it is a good deal. Internet in the lobby area only - these days I expect a wireless connection in the rooms regardless of hotel standard...

Hotel in need of a refurbishment, but the rooms are clean, the service is good, the staff is friendly and the location is amazing, you can reach the subway in two minutes or just walk to the fifth avenue in a few more minutes and take a stroll in Manhattan. If you`re in NY to visit the city, this is the hotel for you, if you`re looking for luxury accomodation, look elsewhere

It is close of Empire State, but few blocks from Times Square, you can go by walk or subway in the corner of the street. Hotel it is ok, not new and kind of noisy. Not spacious as well but the price is fair if u compare with other NY spots.

Excellent locaion with all conveniences about 5 mins from hotel. We stayed for 10 nights. Room was spacious and clean. The bathroom was also clean and spacious. Towels was changed daily and they were clean and fluffy. All the reception staff and housemaids were very helpful and friendly. Will definately recommend and stay there in future trips.

This hotel was very clean, the location is excellent, with the subway practically on it's doorstep, and it's only a short walk to most things on manhattan. The staff was friendly, welcoming and helpful friendly. There is a small cafe downstairs where one can buy breakfast, lunch etc so need to go somewhere looking for that in the morning. I will use this hotel again and will recommend it to others

It was worse hotel in our more that 30 years traveling experience. Only one positive thing is location. The rest - everything is bad: small size, pure service, tobacco smell, broken furniture, bathroom didn't working, etc. Very disappointing.

Our room was a reasonable size for me and my wife and baby. The rooms were cleaned every day, which for the price we paid was fantastic. The location is perfect for all the major sites on NYC. Also the staff were extremely helpful when we needed asssistance in sterilising our babies bottles. Would definitley recommend this place for a lower cost, perfectly situated hotel in NYC.

Travelled in Late Jan- early Feb 2010. Great location, very close to the Metro, & only 2 stops from Times Square. Staff were very good, rooms were clean, but very small (about 3 X 3.5 mtr + small bathroom. No Kettle but has very small bar fridge for drinks/ milk. Recomended for young couples & singles on a budget. Older couples/ or with children or needing space would need larger rooms.Overall value for money was excellent (10 nights X$104 USD per night)- however this was in winter.

Clean, good central location, very good value - considering the wallet-shattering rates of other hotels in Manhattan, especially in 3rd week of September! Very nice and clean hotel in center of Manhattan. The only problem was that our widow view was on a "wheel"inside the building where all air conditioners were, so the only thing we could see was opposite wall. But who needs to stay the whole day in a hotel if you're in a center of NY! Overall very good

This was the first time we stayed at Hotel Grand Union and booked it after reading the feedback of other customers. Very nice experience, our room was quiet as we requested, well equipped and clean. There were useful amenities in the bathroom and the towels were changed everyday if necessary, which is unusual for a 2 star hotels. Nice reception and internet corner/sitting-room. The hotel is very well located, just a few meters far from '33rd Street' underground station. Breakfast is not served but we found all that we liked to the SILO CAFE', opposite the hotel. Negative (but not so grievous): the airconditioner is old and noisy, we had to clean the filter as it was very dirty, and the long time waiting for the lift when it is busy, because it is a bit slow.

Very good location, just few blocks from Empire State Building. Very quite and specious room. The best value for money! Spending time in New York is not about staying in the hotel room but to have it close to the center/subway/ 5th Avenue ;-) - so you can easily walk back after dinner. Breakfast room downstairs is quite small but the size is compensated by the service and food provided. Really nice people behind the bar and very clean place. I'd deffinately stay there again!! :-) Enjoy New York!

The Grand union hotel is a lovely hotel in a perfect location, I had no big complaints, although I was disappointed that the view from our window was an air shaft...we literally were staring at a brick wall and kept the curtains closed all the time with the light on, because no light was getting in through the window. although that was disappointing it was not a holiday ruiner as we weren't in the room that much anyway.

I would recommend this hotel to anyone with realistic expectations, who're interested in New York rather than interested in staying in the hotel room during the whole stay. It's not a five star hotel, obviously. Location is perfect - Metro close by. Korean District has the best sushi - just 1 block away. Turkish staff is efficient and very welcoming. They do not interfere in your private life - they leave you alone, which is very nice! The rooms are VERY clean, and during the night, there're NO NOISE at all! In fact, it was hard to tell that we stayed in the City owing to the quietness. The neighborhood feels safe, and the Empire State Building welcomes you each time you return to the hotel after a long walk in the Big Apple. Thank you for a great stay!

A family of 7 with older children stayed at the hotel. We spent six days of our summer vacations (southern hemisphere) in New York City. The hotel was excellent for the price. It was located one block and a half from 5th avenue and two blocks from the Empire State building. The nearest subway station was at the corner. The staff was friendly and gave us many hints about New York City. For example they gave us directions to take the subway to walk back the Brooklyn Bridge and had a magnificent view of Manhattan. Also, to take the ferry to Staten Island and have beautiful view of the Statue of Liberty and Manhattan for free. They also gave us directions to visit the MoMA, the Metropolitan museum, see a Broadway show, go shopping, etc. They even negotiate to take us back to the airport in a limousine for a good price. It would be great if they included breakfast and internet access as a compliment.

We had two double rooms. I had asked for a double and a twin but was not told that they do not have these before arriving at the hotel. The Grand Union is a basic hotel but is in a good central spot, is clean and tidy and is a reasonable price for New York. If you want a fancy place to stay this is not it but you do not go to New York to spend much time in the hotel room.

Great location, friendly staff. Small rooms. Now I know why they call it the city that never sleeps - jackhammers went all night long, every night of our stay. I think they should have let us know this when we booked. Don't get a room on the street. I would definetly go back, but not stay in a room facing the street. The great price at the Grand Union is what would make me go back.

I stayed here because of the location which was great, I caught the subway from the airport and was only 50 metres from the hotel, fantastic. I knew hotels in central Manhattan were expensive so I was well aware of that and our falling £ made it a bit more so! Hotel is not new, just like every other NON luxurious accomodation in NY. But it's clean, quiet and very strategically located near Empire State Building. The 33.st Metro entrance is pratically out of the door! Great for all round NY visiting IMHO. Though, there's no internet available in the rooms (not cabled nor WIFI) and the lounge internet access is quite pricey. All in all a very good accomodation for groups and families

This was the best money value I could find for Mid-town and I was pleased to find it clean, central and reasonably quiet for its location. The first night I had a room which had previously had a smoker and the night staff were not prepared to change it. The next morning the very next door room was available so I could easily have been shifted. However, the hotel was just right for the working visit I made to NYC.

They were very kind to let me make a late check out (2pm). People from the cafe next door were very friendly. There was nobody to carry luggage up. Although there are lifts, the building has many fire doors to be open in its narrow corridors, what makes it difficult to deal with luggage by yourself. The quality of the soap in the bathroom wasn't good.

Was surprised to smell smoke in the room. When asked to switch room, was informed that all rooms are the same and that it is up to the guest whether they choose to smoke or not. They gave me some spray and told me to open the windows and door. The location was convenient and the room was large. No view from my particular room but if you plan on being out a lot..... Other than the smoke smell, I would recommend it.

A multi-story hotel on a non-descript street, half a block from the number 6 metro line, and right across from a superb restaurant (Artisanal - try the cheese course!) and a great breakfast place (Silo cafe). The room was perfectly comfortable, except for the shower, whose temperature fluctuated wildly. A broken bedside lamp was replaced promptly when I reported it. Check-in was a little weird: getting from the Venere.com rate to the rate with taxes added seemed to be a slightly mystical process that produced an answer, but no explanation. (And taxes in New York city aren't that low - we paid about 17%!) Given that we were in town to see New York, not to luxuriate in our hotel room, this was a great find at a very decent rate ($200 incl taxes in late October). I'd happily go back.

This hotel is in a great location. It is very good value for a big city hotel. It is very clean and has all that a guest could require including a nice little cafe beside it that served a great breakfast at very reasonable rates. The room was a bit noisy but only to be expected in a big city.

The hotel was very good value for money and surprisingly quiet considering the location. The room was not huge but perfectly OK for our needs-clean, comfortable bed etc Ideally suited to people who dont want to spend a lot of time IN the hotel but want to get a good rest at the end of the day.

This was pretty much our first trip to NYC as adults on vacation. The hotel was very basic but the price was very reasonable (especially compared to other hotels in NYC!). Given that we spent most of our time away from the hotel, this was perfect for our needs. The staff was friendly and helpful.

I know it is NYC, but what you get for the price is hard to swallow. The elevator has alot to be desired. We took the stairs several times from the 9th floor, because of the slow pace of the elevator and the stairs are not very traffic friendly. The location and the cleanliness is definitely the highlights. The staff are friendly. I would not stay again if rate is almost $300. Too much money for what you get.

The Room was as expected, a great value for my cost. We were there one night for a Broadway show, back late after the show and up early to catch a train to DC. Great place to stay for value and woudl stay there again.

This hotel is in a prime location literally 5 minutes walk from the Empire State Building. Having researched many centrally sited (much more expensive) hotels before finally finding this affordable hotel I found the price of a room very competitive. This hotel has everything you need for a short stay in New York City.
