This hotel is for what it is; a place for sleep and rest. It is placed in a great location a few blocks of Times Square and near 5th av and the Empire State Building. The room was small and have the essential things that you need.

Sound proofing of our room on the 2nd floor front was inadequate. We accept that New York is a very busy city and therefore noisy but this should therefore correspondingly precipitate counteractive measures to mitigate the discomfort caused by the noise. We would return to this hotel but only on the condition that a room away from the street would be available: or that adequate sound proofing was installed.

The staff were very competent and completely helpful at all times. The first room we were allocated did not suit our requirements, with no bother we were allocated a better room the first thing next morning. We spent a happy 18 days in the hotel and would certainly stay there when in NY again. The only negative from my wife, was the lighting in the bathroom wasn`t really sufficient for applying make up etc, that is the only negative comment I could make.

My girlfriend and I have just got back from NYC and the experience with the Hotel Grand Union was pretty good. One of the coolest things the Hotel Grand Union has, is the very close access to the Subway No.6 Uptown/Downtown. The entrance is located about 100 meters from the hotel, easy to spin around NYC from North to South and vice versa. Shopping is a must in this sparkling city and walking with many bags in your hands can be really exhausted at the end of a long shopping day! We found out that having the chance to drop-off your stuff when your hands are full and your body is overwhelmed by the hot days we had last week, is a blessing! And remember, "legwork" in NYC is a must in order to discover the beauty things of the city so, having the chance to get the Subway right next to your hotel's corner is simply awesome! Just in case you need to relax a bit.. Rooms are small but clean! And towels in the bathroom are changed every day. If you enjoying b'fast as we do, you must try SILO which is located in front of the hotel. Across the street. Awesome pancakes, sandwiches, fresh fruits and much more to taste!! Overall, we both suggest this hotel if you have a "tide" budget to spend on the hotel. Of course "tide" for a city like NYC.

A little worn in places, but generally well-kept and clean. Irritting noises from the heaters plus street noise despite being high up. Not a luxury hotel by any means, but felt friendly, safe and secure, and was clean. For NY in this location it is a good deal. Internet in the lobby area only - these days I expect a wireless connection in the rooms regardless of hotel standard...

Hotel in need of a refurbishment, but the rooms are clean, the service is good, the staff is friendly and the location is amazing, you can reach the subway in two minutes or just walk to the fifth avenue in a few more minutes and take a stroll in Manhattan. If you`re in NY to visit the city, this is the hotel for you, if you`re looking for luxury accomodation, look elsewhere

This was the first time we stayed at Hotel Grand Union and booked it after reading the feedback of other customers. Very nice experience, our room was quiet as we requested, well equipped and clean. There were useful amenities in the bathroom and the towels were changed everyday if necessary, which is unusual for a 2 star hotels. Nice reception and internet corner/sitting-room. The hotel is very well located, just a few meters far from '33rd Street' underground station. Breakfast is not served but we found all that we liked to the SILO CAFE', opposite the hotel. Negative (but not so grievous): the airconditioner is old and noisy, we had to clean the filter as it was very dirty, and the long time waiting for the lift when it is busy, because it is a bit slow.

The Grand union hotel is a lovely hotel in a perfect location, I had no big complaints, although I was disappointed that the view from our window was an air shaft...we literally were staring at a brick wall and kept the curtains closed all the time with the light on, because no light was getting in through the window. although that was disappointing it was not a holiday ruiner as we weren't in the room that much anyway.

I would recommend this hotel to anyone with realistic expectations, who're interested in New York rather than interested in staying in the hotel room during the whole stay. It's not a five star hotel, obviously. Location is perfect - Metro close by. Korean District has the best sushi - just 1 block away. Turkish staff is efficient and very welcoming. They do not interfere in your private life - they leave you alone, which is very nice! The rooms are VERY clean, and during the night, there're NO NOISE at all! In fact, it was hard to tell that we stayed in the City owing to the quietness. The neighborhood feels safe, and the Empire State Building welcomes you each time you return to the hotel after a long walk in the Big Apple. Thank you for a great stay!

A family of 7 with older children stayed at the hotel. We spent six days of our summer vacations (southern hemisphere) in New York City. The hotel was excellent for the price. It was located one block and a half from 5th avenue and two blocks from the Empire State building. The nearest subway station was at the corner. The staff was friendly and gave us many hints about New York City. For example they gave us directions to take the subway to walk back the Brooklyn Bridge and had a magnificent view of Manhattan. Also, to take the ferry to Staten Island and have beautiful view of the Statue of Liberty and Manhattan for free. They also gave us directions to visit the MoMA, the Metropolitan museum, see a Broadway show, go shopping, etc. They even negotiate to take us back to the airport in a limousine for a good price. It would be great if they included breakfast and internet access as a compliment.

The Grand Union is a basic hotel but is in a good central spot, is clean and tidy and is a reasonable price for New York. Great hotel in an excellent location! Only problem we had was that our room was on the front of the building and the street could be a little noisy through the night sometimes.

In ottima posizione per visitare Manhattan. Consigliatissimo poiché dall'hotel potete raggiungere molti luoghi di NY a piedi. Ovviamente non aspettatevi molto dalle camere però ne vale la pena visto il rapporto prezzo/posizione

We stayed for a week. With 2 couple in their mid forties, we wanted 2 double room with independance and our own bathroom. Bedrooms were very clean, quiet and spacious. The location is perfect to go to any destinations whitin Manhattan. We could not complain on people and services provided, always available if needed. Though, a great hotel (based on price/quality/location) for a fantastic trip !!

Good Location. A reasonable hotel which is not too big. Lift could do with being a little faster. Friendly people in cafe which is attached very handy. Chicken was excellent. It was a little hot but it was cold outside, a problem lowering the temperature in the room.

The hotel is small, but very good for NY prices and a great location 2 blocks from empire state building. Great coffee shop next door for breakfast.

Excellent location. Our family room was big enough for 2 teenagers and my wife and I. Breakfast next door was fine as no food on site. Not the most picturesque view from room but we were never in long enough to bother. Hotel decor was fine and no faults with room.

Hotel is not new, just like every other NON luxurious accomodation in NY. But it's clean, quiet and very strategically located near Empire State Building. The 33.st Metro entrance is pratically out of the door! Great for all round NY visiting IMHO. Though, there's no internet available in the rooms (not cabled nor WIFI) and the lounge internet access is quite pricey. All in all a very good accomodation for groups and families

We stayed the Hotel Grand Union for 5 days and found it to be just how we expected it and would have no hesitation in recommending it. Good, clean budget hotel.

This was the best money value I could find for Mid-town and I was pleased to find it clean, central and reasonably quiet for its location. The first night I had a room which had previously had a smoker and the night staff were not prepared to change it. The next morning the very next door room was available so I could easily have been shifted. However, the hotel was just right for the working visit I made to NYC.

They were very kind to let me make a late check out (2pm). People from the cafe next door were very friendly. There was nobody to carry luggage up. Although there are lifts, the building has many fire doors to be open in its narrow corridors, what makes it difficult to deal with luggage by yourself. The quality of the soap in the bathroom wasn't good.

Was surprised to smell smoke in the room. When asked to switch room, was informed that all rooms are the same and that it is up to the guest whether they choose to smoke or not. They gave me some spray and told me to open the windows and door. The location was convenient and the room was large. No view from my particular room but if you plan on being out a lot..... Other than the smoke smell, I would recommend it.

A multi-story hotel on a non-descript street, half a block from the number 6 metro line, and right across from a superb restaurant (Artisanal - try the cheese course!) and a great breakfast place (Silo cafe). The room was perfectly comfortable, except for the shower, whose temperature fluctuated wildly. A broken bedside lamp was replaced promptly when I reported it. Check-in was a little weird: getting from the Venere.com rate to the rate with taxes added seemed to be a slightly mystical process that produced an answer, but no explanation. (And taxes in New York city aren't that low - we paid about 17%!) Given that we were in town to see New York, not to luxuriate in our hotel room, this was a great find at a very decent rate ($200 incl taxes in late October). I'd happily go back.
