Chelsea star hostel is very good choice for single traveller who wants to spend most of time doing sightseeing in NYC. The location is perfect, just cross the street to the Penn station. I stayed at Chelsea 3 nights in room with 6 bunk beds. But roommates were kind, they were not noisy. There were 4 bathrooms with shower, toilette and washbasin which were cleaned every day. In the price also free WIFI access was included. Chelsea is very good property!

I've stayed at this hotel before. It's fantastic for the price and would stay a 3rd time should I visit New York again.

Excellent service, we got even more then we asked for. For NYC also very cheap. Location close to Penn station (and subway), which is very comfortable, when you need to travel by train. Nice and quiet outside terrace where you can eat, smoke and use wireless internet. However nobody talks, because everybody is using cellphones and/or laptops. The outside of the hotel doesn't reveal what's inside.

Clean, Tidy but basic. Good location, friendly helpfull staff. The price I had to pay was more than I was led to believe when I booked which was disappointing, but did not affect our stay.

I was in a suite, a double bed room with bathroom and it was very ok, silent and clean The location is wonderful, you can walk to any Manhatan location , close to Chelsea art galleries and quite close to Penn Station

The smaller room that I saw in all my life. The room was a bed in the middle of 4 walls like a grave!!!!Heating at the higer level.I found the towel dirty of foregnier blood. The best bad place that I've been!!!

Big disappointment here! This hotel's snazzy web site includes photos that did not resemble in the slightest bit the reality of the room we got, which was ugly, poorly lit and so small that I wonder whether it was even legal. For 130 dollars per night, I did not expect to be staying in a glorified broom closet over a noisy street, to spend 30 minutes waiting in line for the ONLY bathroom on the entire floor every morning, and to be eaten alive by bed bugs every night! To its credit, this hotel does have a great location near Times Square, and a kind staff, but that hardly justifies charging so much money to stay in a place that can best be qualified as a truly crappy hotel.

Going by the price and the appearance of the hotel from the outside, our expectations were quite low, but fortunately we were pleasantly surprised. Staff - very polite and helpful. Rooms - old but clean and well maintained, spotless bathroom (ours was not shared). Noise level - walls seemed a bit thin so we could hear conversations in adjoining rooms sometimes. Location - walking distance from times square. Other goodies - cheap internet connection, plenty of eating places around the block, microwave oven, tea, coffee. (Review is based on the room we got, other rooms may or may not be as appealing. We were bumped up to a room with a nice view.)

My stay was quite pleasant and the staff most helpfull. They assisted A LOT with questions re. New York, sights and transport. Also, I was very fortunate, in that the other occupants in my dorm room were very considerate and pleasant.

By accident I arrived one day too early in NYC on a saturday, but the guy at the reception was very helpful and able to provide my a double room for the night by shifting. Stayed then there for three nights in a single private room, which was quite small, clean and with individual art design, but noisy due to the hotels location right at the corner of the eight avenue and its position next to the shared bathroom, so having earplugs ready is necessary to sleep undisturbed, even if you prefer openening the window for fresh air. There was one shared bathroom/toilet per floor, what made it hard in the morning rush hour to take a shower. Anyhow, the location is very centrally in NYC (got there by train, its only one block off Penn station) Major entertainment and attractions can be safely reached by foot over busy streets even in the night. And the pricing for the quality seems for me to be a good deal for NYC, so in case I may stay there again. One tip for hotel: the biggest noise source of the bathrooms were the boxes for the paper towels, when hotel guests are treating their levers like bezerk in the night - a silent sensor one would be a great improvement!

Stayed in an 8-bed-dorm for 8 nights in Mar 2008. Hotel and room are very clean, so is the ensuite bathroom. There is an additional (public) bathroom (with shower) on each floor, which were clean as well. The room was very small for 8 people, esp if everyone brings a big bagpack. Apart from an open-air terrace and small room which housed a pay-for-use internet pc, a free coffee machine and a small bench, there was NO common room, which meant that there was nowhere really to sit/read/relax outside of the dorm room. The hotel is located conveniently close to Paddington Station and just a few blocks from 34th Street and Times Square. Near the hotel is a Subway Sandwich, a 24h Deli, a really good bakery (with excellent Cheesecake), some bars/pubs/bottleshop, and a 24h Drugstore. All in all, very good value for money, clean and centrally located. My only complaint would be the lack of a proper common where one could sit down and relax from a day in hectic NYC.

Warm welcome and a lot of help. Small but very nice room. Just a little loud at night. But the whole place was very clean. Friendly people and staff. Whenever we come to New york again, we would love to stay at Chelsea Star!!!

mice in dormitory!!!!...and when I complained the guy at reception became obnoxious!! Way overpriced compared to other much nicer hostels in Manhattan. No guest-kitchen, but supposedly the mice were my fault for having brought a sealed packet of crisps into room, well, were else should I have left it please??? Avoid!!!!

Very simple room for people without any expectation or wishes. Good for a short break (1 max. 2 nights) but not longer. If you want to book a room, ask for a quiet room, cause it is unbelivable looud in it. Only one shower and toilet per etage...no good. No relaxing possible.

This hotel is beautiful, clean, in a good position, with a particular furniture. Very good the terrace, useful for breakfast. A comfortable hotel, ok for people without pretensions who want to visit New York and not stay in the hotel for all time.

Nice Hotel, near the Madison Square Garden, 15 min. to Times Square. Because of a booking mistake, they gave us even a better room for the same price, thats good service i think.

The location is great close to the shops, Time Sq, Empire State, Penn Station and the Subway, also the Pier for Cirlcle Line Boat trips is walking distance. The Hotel is clean and bright and not that expensive. The only thing we found was the rooms were small, enough space for a double bed and your lugage and that was it but the room decoration is cool we had a great time and enjoyed the patio area and the staff are very helpful.

I actually changed room, because the first one was so small, but the other one with also a bathroom, that one was great! I recomende it, because it is a special price in NY to have thise facilities. One thing I loved to do was to have dinner on the outdoor terrace with other people, really feeling like a newyorker

Well located Value for money accomm.;however, it is more of a hostel than a hotel. Should be warning about the stairs and there being no elevator (i.e. for people with heavy luggage) Bathrooms need improving. Overall no complaints, it needs to be understaood that accomm. in NY comes at a premium price and if you choose the cheapest rate it will come with the associated features.
