not sure why this place has so many negative comments. We found it quiet, large room, nice bathroom, clean. Breakfast very complete for Italian locations (typically you get in Italian hotels 1 coffee and one croissant, here it was coffee, croissant, pannini, ham, cheese, egg, cereals). Very good restaurant at the hotel. Excellent price/value. Walk from city up to the hotel is 15 minutes (180 small stairs), not steep, just healthy. OVerall a good place to stay. For all critical persons: folks - this is a 3*. I have seen much smaller rooms with older furniture in 4* and 4*+ in Austria for 3x the price (I am Austrian!)

Must have a car in this location. Compared to Greek hotels cost for the facilities offered is very high. People in restaurant very friendly. We would recommend Taverna Bleu to eat 7 miles back on lake road towards Como.

The room was basic, but very clean. The soundproofing was, however, not the best. The breakfast room with a view of the pool was lovely, and the breakfast buffet was very good -- rolls, cold cuts & cheese, choice of cereals, plus yogurt and fresh fruit. The pool was well maintained.

We stayed in a famly suite with two bedrooms, quite spacious and clean. The staff was friendly and helpful, the swimming pool and breakfast room clean and pleasant. However, the room and the advertised terrace were extremely simple, somewhat shabby, if not to say" prison style". For 220 euro's per night not the right value for money. The location of Menaggio is quite expensive we recognize, in general, but as Sonenga is ± 750 meter uphill from the lake we believe it is overpriced given its accomodation and location. A great place if it charges 100 euro per night less......

This hotel was not as advertised. It was not 5 minutes from the town - it is at least half an hour, up steep cobbled steps. The 'Lake View' was of the far bank of the lake - the main view is of the roofs of other houses. We decided not to stay there once we had seen it. The hotel would be ok for those with transport wishing to stay out of the town.

Location is a bit out the way of the main shore front in Menaggio. Exercise walking back up the hill helped with digesting dinner though! Hotel very quiet and clean. Pool was out of commission, but an unsolicited discount was applied on paying the bill which was appreciated. Transfers to the airport worked well if a little expensive.

We'd say that this hotel felt more like appartments, but without the self catering facilities. We went in early Sep and it seemed out of season already as the pool bar was only available from 2pm until 7.30pm, if you rang a bell for service. The breakfast was good though. The walk into town and back seem very daughting at first, but once you got used to it, it was fine - just get the map from reception before you embark on it. Overall for the price and being away from the main road we're glad we picked this hotel.

We had a lovely welcome. Personable staff. Tried to walk to the hotel but took the wrong route and ended up walking up a steep bendy narrow road without a pavement, so we turned back and got a cab! Once we had worked out the right route, the brisk walk to and from town was lovely. We loved Menaggio. Not too busy and hectic. If you are into walking then climbing up to the Refugio is a must. The pool was a bit chilly but then we aren't hardened swimmers. Breakfast was good and the accomodation was comfortable and spacious. would go again.

Hotel proved to be in a difficult location without the use of a car but as we had one, it was not so bad and offered much easier parking than hotels in the town itself. The walk up and down was very steep and tiring. The staff within the limits of their knowlege of English (and ours of Italian) were very helpful and obliging.Breakfasts were excellent. Cost of Hotel was too high for the standard. We would however have preferred to stay at the Bellavista (lake view room) which was beautifully situated with an excellent restaurant.

We had an excellent stay at the Hotel Sonenga which was a good base for visiting the area. The breakfast was very good and got the day off to a good start. The hotel is good hike up from the lake side so it was good that we had a car and Roger the Hotel owner can organise transport if needed. Menaggio was a little smaller than we thought but what was there was very good in term of restaurants, cafes and transportation.

An additional payment of 20 Euro for a small gap of the lake only visible from out of the balcony is too much. Further on 3 Euro a day for a parking space at the hotel (no other option of parking in the nearby surrounding) is not acceptable. The hotel is equipped basicly and in the style of the 70is, so a bad ratio of quality and price. For us never again. The fotos on the homepage are too positive.

My wife and I visited Hotel Sonenga in May 2007 with 3 children (aged between 6 and 12). The hotel was not too busy, and was an ideal place for a few days rest & relaxation. The swimming pool was ideal though not much else for the kids to do. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Menaggio is a beautiful small lakeside town. The only issue I would note is the lack of meaningful directions to the hotel on the website. It is located up the hill from the town of Menaggio (approx. 600m or 700m ?) and you would ideally need a car. There are no signposts in Menaggio so if you visit, remember to take the road towards Lugano out of the town and then take a left at a fork in the road (small sign on a lamppost at that junction)!

It was difficult to find on foot with luggage. There should be a more detailed map available on the web site. Its a 12 minute walk from the town centre, up hill, but i thought this was good e3xcercise. I would recomend planning out how to get there before you arrive. The owner guy was friendly and spoke english and i think german. He gave off a pretty casual vibe, which i liked. The breakfast was great - there was coffee, bread, croissants, cold meats, yoghurt, cereal, and fruit. The room were furnished with simple wood furniture, and were pretty small. You have to stay a few nights to get a room with a view of the lake. Overall it was a great stay, i really enjoyed my time there. It was too cold for the pool though!

The hotel was almost closed in this season and so the welcome and the facilities were poor. This was not mentionned in the website. The lake view was not at the expected level (partially masked by the roof of the neighboor). We benefit of the family noises of the hotel staff! ON the site, t was not clear that it was more a bed & breakfast than a standard hotel. The positive point is that we haveen't been charged extra for the view ! And we got a few advise from the boss of the hotel for the restaurant.

Travelling alone, I found this site undesirable. It was too remote to walk to from town center after dark. The walk back is a steep climb, but great exercise! Roger, the owner was extremely friendly and eager to make one's stay comfortable. However, the "reception" desk leaves much to be desired. After breakfast, the office is locked. You must ring a bell for service; and if Roger does not answer, no other staff speaks any English. I would not recommend staying in Menaggio at all. Bellagio would be a much better choice.

The hotel was in a very quiet area and the cleanliness and size of the rooms was excellent. The breakfast was reasonable and the staff were friendly and efficient and Roger, the owner, was very friendly and helpful. The hotel is a good base for exploring the area and for a visit to Switzerland. It was a bit of a hike into town, not so much going down the hill and steps but it seemed a long haul back especially after a good meal and a few drinks. The pool looked very inviting but the water was uncomfortably cold and the bar only seemed to be open during the day to serve guests around the pool and there not any bars or restaurants nearby. The gym and sauna were good. Overall a good hotel to stay in for 2 or 3 days as a base to explore the area.

Very disappointed with the management staff. We were assured that our luggage would be delivered to the ferry terminal on leaving the hotel as it is a considerable, and in parts steep, walk which we would have done with heavy cases. This arrangement was confirmed in Italian so that there would be no misunderstanding. The luggage failed to arrive and we missed the last ferry having already paid for the two tickets. On returning to the hotel the manager's wife claimed that she did not know of the arrangement. Worse, she did not apologise nor make any other arrangement to help us catch up with the ferry which we could have done if we had been taken to another ferry terminal nearer to Como. In fact she refused to help us out altogether other than to call us a taxi at our expense. Fortunately some other sympathetic and generous guests in the hotel very kindly offered to take us to Como in order to get our coach to Milan airport. This experience spoilt what would otherwise have been a wonderful holiday in Menaggio. We will definitely return to Menaggio and the Lake Como area but will not be staying in the Sonenga Hotel.

It would have been nice if the hotel had evening meals. Eating so late 21:00 for us in Italy is a problem, and going to the center of town is an inconvenience, since we are in our late 60s. Driving in Italian towns is what I call a Grand Prix sport.

The hotel is a long way from the piazza and the walk is down a steep uneven path. There is no "popping" back the the hotel for anything you have forgotten. The rooms are poorly furnished and I have never slept in harder bed or with a harder pillow. I woke every morning after a very fitful sleep. The towels are not changed, simply refolded wet! and no toiletries are provided after day 1. Upon arrival you are asked to sign what can only be described as a "contract", committing to stay or pay for the number of nights booked. I was threatened by the manager when I initially refused. "You will not stay one night if you don't sign up for the 6 you booked!". Don't pay for a lake view, it is more a glimpse of the lake across rooftops.

The hotel provided good quality accommodation at a reasonable price. The staff were friendly and competent. The hotel is built in a 'motel'style and this surprised us. There is no bar in the evening and the reception closed at 6pm. The walk to and from Menaggio was short, but steep and would not suit anyone who had difficulty walking. The accommodation was very clean and our room more spacious than we had expected. We paid a little more for a balcony and lake view and it was worth it. I would recommend the hotel to anyone who is interested in their surroundings more than the hotel they are staying in. It provided an excellent base from which to explore Lake Como by ferry. I was pleasantly surprised with how nice and how big the room was. The bathroom was large and beautiful and the bedroom was nice as well. Everything was clean, the property was very nice. The only problem was getting there - it is not possible to walk to the hotel and you must have a car or take a taxi. Also, I did not request a balcony or view but was given a room with a balcony which was very nice but was then charged extra for it because it was the only non-smoking room available. I booked the room online at 110 euros and was then charged 120 euros instead, if my sister had not spoken Italian this would have been a problem. They ended up just charging us the 110 but said they couldn't access the internet and were having problems with the bookings. Overall it was a very nice place and beautiful location. Lake Como is the most beautiful place in the whole world, and I am so glad that I chose Mennagio as the town in which I stayed. I am so grateful for the Sonenga staff - they were incredible! I arrived - alone - at night in a foreign town, not knowing what to expect. I got a ride from the bus station to the hotel, and I stayed in the most beautiful room! The next morning I watched the sunrise over the lake and had a great breakfast - included in the price! I didnt know what to do that day, so another staff member drove me to the office of tourism so that I could plan my day. Overall, my stay was PERFECT. I will definitely stay here again if I ever get a chance to return to Como!!

This charming hotel on Lake Como was excellent value for money. the staff were friendly and obliging. There is a path which is a shortcut down to the Lake which takes about 5 minutes to walk. It probably takes that to drive around all the bends and then have to park! The only downside is that the hotel has no restaurant or bar in the evenings which is a shame if you don't feel like going out. Our stay was Okay but we would have prefered to know that we were renting an appartment at the price of a suite !!!! information on Venere's web site are not so extensive about the fact that it is (almost) impossible to get to the center of the city by foot, except by walking on a dangerous road with no pedestrian pavement.

Our room at Sonenga was lovely and spacious, though the view of the lake was a bit obstructed. The main problem was the location of the hotel, which was in a not-so-attractive residential area pretty far up a steep hill from town, with no way conveniently to walk up after dark. So we had to take a taxi (8 euros with tip) up from town each night that we stayed late. Also, the atmosphere of the place was not particularly friendly or welcoming.

Downsides: - Don't get much of a lake view even from the "lake view" rooms - can only see lake over side of balcony. - Quite a steep walk up to the hotel from the lake, no good for the elderly or small children Advice -Don't use the minor road to Menaggio from Lugano on busy days - it's very narrow and we had to squeeze past lots of buses in the villages en-route

Hotel Sonenga was very nice. However, you MUST take a cab from the ferry. It is much too far and steep to walk with luggage. Also, if you want to walk back and forth to town you have to have good legs. The climb using the stairway behind the church is quite long and steep. Our room was not air conditioned so we had to leave our window open. The people down below out on the patio stayed up quite late and the noise kept us awake. Our room was compact but clean. The check-in desk office was usually closed so that we ended up checking in and out at the same time. The breakfast was good and lovely out on the porch. The pool and deckside bar were great also. We loved Menaggio.

The Sonenga was one of my most pleasant stays, due in great part to the very personable and helpful desk man and his assistant. They answered many questions for me, were able to tell me how to walk to town, and where to find other places I needed. The swimming pool was sparkling clean, the breakfast was more than ample with atleast a dozen items to choose from, and the room, bath and patio were spacious. The "view " of the lake was just a partial view, through several buildings, but still worth the extra charge.

My husband & I enjoyed our stay at Sonenga very much. It is located just a 5-10 minute walk from the town square and the staff was friendly and helpful. We can't wait until we can come again.

When we arrived in the afternoon, the lady who gave us our room was not very friendly and did not talk a lot. We had a reservation for a "suite" and we got this: a big room, just with a bed, no table, no chair, no waste-can, and the furniture were really pretty old and. The breakfast at morning was ok, we got everything we need. But nevertheless, we canceld our stay at hotel sonenga. We booked for 4 nights and we stayed only one night.

The address of the hotel should be exact. It took us over 1 hour to find the hotel from the address given and after travelling all day this is the last thing a guest wants to do. Per haps a location plan could be emailed with the booking comfirmation

Very friendly staff, comfortable and spacious rooms, beautiful surroundings. Situated at the top of a hill, takes about 5 minutes to get down to the village, 10 to get back up. Suitable for able-bodied persons only unless with own transport. Good breakfast provided.

This property is not located close to the Lake (Como)and there are only glimpes of the labe possible from the hotel. Walking downhill to the town (Mennagio)takes just under 15 minutes, slightly more to come back uphill. On the plus side, there is no traffic noise around the hotel as it is up the hillside away from town. Pool facility is beautiful as per photo.

Overall a good hotel, with competitive rates given the facilities (pool, gym etc). The property is located high up the hillside, which won't make it suitable for those less mobile - more than a hundred cobbled steps, plus a winding road take you up from Menaggio. The rooms were clean and reasonably spacious. The staff are were the only let down, forgetting to mention additional extras (such as a 5 euro charge per person for the sauna), miscalculation of our final invoice amount, and a general approach that was not welcoming. This was particularly so at the poolside bar, where you would think they would be looking to drive business. As it is it closes early, and offers no food or snacks, meaning lunchtime trips down the hill. Under new management this could be an excellent little hotel.

We visited the Sonenga with our two kids (ages 1 and 4). Our triple suite was really a small apartment with a bath, kitchenette, dining area, living area, and bedroom. The accomodations, common areas, and dining room were spotless. The pool was wonderful also. The owner and staff were friendly and helpful. The main downside is the walk (10-15 minutes straight up from town with many stairs; challenging with a stroller); the hotel is advertised as 500 meters from the town but I think that is the vertical elevation--at least it felt that way! Also, there is currently construction nearby which starts at 8 AM, so there is early morning noise. Overall, a great value and we would definitely stay here again.

Roger was the best host we had during our five week stay in Italy! Also the breakfast was wonderful and the area is beautiful. The only negative was with the service at restaurants in Menaggio itself-but it had nothing to do with the Hotel Sonenga. If you are going to stay in Menaggio, definitely stay here!

A very pleasant hotel in a secluded part of the town. There is a subway under the main road that allows you to reach the main town without hazard although as the hotel is on a hillside we used the local taxi for the return trip (€6-7 in June 2004). Was surprised by the number of British present in what I thought would have been an 'of the beaten track' place - both hotel and town.

The description of the hotel is fairly accurate, the pictures are slightly miselading as the pool is not connected to the hotel as it appears but it is only a short walk away, views of the lake are minimal, due to some building work, but the mountains are impressive anyway. The hotel is only a three or four minute walk from the centre as it states on the site, HOWEVER, the boat doesn't go into the centre and this easy route to the hotel is not at all sign posted or identified. If you have lots of bags or are perhaps elderly or infirm -- DO NOT ATTEMPT TO WALK -- it's one hell of a climb and involves roads with no footpaths. RING the hotel - Roger, the owner, is very happy to come and pick people up from the boat landing or if he's not there get a taxi - I can't stress that enough..... Th short route also does involve lots of steps and is a steep climb so again even though its relatively quick once you get to the centre - if you have lots of bags/are elderly call the hotel/get a taxi. Apart from that it's an excellent base to tour the lakes and if your into walking holidays then with boats travelling in both directions from the dock it's easy to travel up the lake a ways and walk back or vice versa. Breakfast was typically continental and allowed a fairly substantial start to the day with a fair selection of fruits, cereals, pastries etc. The rooms were ok - although i wouldn't bother with the suites if you just want a hotel room for dum, oing your kit in - the extra space probably isn't worth the cost. Unfortunately for us the pool wasn't filled as we were probably too early in the season but they did fill it the day we left so you should be ok form now on. I would recommend staying here and if we ever go back will probably look to stay here again - but this time I'll be getting a taxi or a lift or taking some lighter bags....

When we informed the hotel that we have a 5 month old baby, they were very accomodating, supplying a cot and giving us a room with a small kitchen and balcony. The cot and balcony carried a surcharge but as our stay was just before the start of high season we were not charged full price having the kitchen.

A very friendly owner - fluent in many languages. I was expecting to be nearer to the Lakeside - there is a very steep climb back up the hill after eating at night down in Menaggio ! We had a very spacious room but could often hear the owner's young family - otherwise very quiet.

We stayed at the hotel in October a few weeks before the end of the tourist season, thus there were few guests at the time. The hotel is difficult to find and a certain distance from the «downtown» Mennagio. To reach this area by foot is a challenge more importantly when getting (climbing) back to the hotel after a good supper. The room was very spacious, the breakfast plentifull, and hotel personnel pleaseant.

We are a family of 4, 2 adults and 2 children aged 5 and 2 years. We stayed for one night and were very impressed with the size of our room, the friendly and efficient service and the excellent breakfast (the best breakfast by far in our entire trip of 5 1/2 weeks duration)- we had stayed in a range of accommodation (varying from 1 and 2 stars to 5 stars) and we thought the breakfast far surpassed any we had at any of the other places!! We had requested a cot for our 2 year old and unlike a lot of the other places we stayed at we were pleased to find a cot waiting in our room upon our arrival. We were also pleased to find our room came complete with a refrigerator and a stove and even a small espresso maker( a big plus in our opinion)! We enjoyed our stay very much and only wished we could have stayed more than one night - it is on our list of places to return to on our next trip!!!

The property was extremely clean, well built and offered a pleasant atmosphere. The owner/management/staff were extremely hospitable. Roger was very accomodating to ensure I enjoyed my stay(his english was "good enough") and even went out of his way to personally drive me to the ferry to catch my train across the lake in the early morning! Yes, it is a bit of a hike straight up the hill to get to the property from the town center, but it is manageable for most anyone in good shape. I had a room with a patio overlooking the lake... beautiful view!

We had booked two lake view rooms at 115 Euros per night. Instead we got one lake view room at 115 Euros and one non-view room at 95 Euros. We were told that the hotel was 150 meters from town, instead it was much longer. If we had this information in advance we may have stayed elsewhere.

The location of this hotel, once we found it, was very peacfull and our room had a very pleasant outlook. Although there is currently building work going on nearby so you had to look between the cranes. The braekfast was of a very good quality and the staff pleasant nad helpfull. In fact the only bad point of our weeks stay there was related to our noisy neighbours who arrived for our last 2 days. I could happily have thrown them over the balcony and it is with some regret now that I didn't. I would definately recommend the hotel.

The hotel was basically fine. Rooms were clean and breakfast excellent. Perhaps it was the end of their season, but apart from breakfast time the public rooms as such, including gym and sauna, were locked and only accessable by contacting owners via intercom at entrance gate! I thought I had booked a single room plus junior suite. What we were allocated was two self catering apartments, complete with kitchen/diners. Clean but very sparsely furnished and 'functional'.

This hotel is spotlessly clean, well-designed and modern. It is family-run and friendly. The proprietor speaks English, French and German. Being built on a hillside in a delightful small town means that there is a beautiful cobbled pathway down to the lakeside (10 mins down, 15 back) which might make it difficult for some, but as a middle-aged woman with 2 healthy teenagers we had no problem. The swimming pool is a sun-trap, and has a small bar. The rooms described as "suites" are actually more like apartments, (Some with their own terraces)with a kitchen area, table and chairs, sofa bed and fold-away beds, and with a separate double bedroom and bathroom, so a "suite" can easily accommodate a family. However, when booking via Venere I found the system told me there were no suites available for "3", though there were suites for "2." In the end I booked for 2 and added the "extra" person in the special-requirements box. It is an ideal place for a peaceful, modestly-priced holiday in a beautiful location.

Although the owner calls it a hotel, Sonenga is just a pretty B&B with some self-catering apartments. There is no restaurant and the poolside bar is only open daytime - not every day - with limited snacks. It's a very steep walk down to town for a meal or drink, even steeper coming back at night! What a shame that the owners don't seem to want to put more effort into the place - there's no fulltime reception or other hotel service. Breakfast is a fair range of cereal, ham, cheese, croissants etc but they don't start serving until 8.30 and twice during our stay they were later than that opening up. Menaggio is an attractive town, well situated for boat trips and buses, but we would look for somewhere else to stay another time.

The hotel is set in a beautiful peaceful area away from the tourism and razzmatazz. The hotel has a lovely pool which was rarely crowded even in the height of summer. The only problem we had was the noise levels which at times stopped us from sleeping, as well as the heat which I believe was incredibly hot even for Italy in the summer! Air conditionoing would have been wonderful but at the price we paid I am not surprised this was not provided. Good value for money considering the location and time of year.
