It would have been helpful if the fact that you have to pay for self parking, breakfasts etc was more obvious BEFORE you book. I did not see those details anywhere until my confirmation of reservation. Also even that did not state that you need to book the parking. We had to drive around for 20 mins looking for a car park that allowed overnight parking and even then it was locked so we were unable to access our car after 7pm and cost an extra $34. Taking the total price to $103 and inline with more upmarket hotels. Add to that breakfast and you can actually get more upmarket hotels that include those things cheaper.

It isn't a luxury hotel by any means but I was aware of that and the price was great considering it's location. Everything I planned my weekend around was within walking distance. What a great location. The staff were welcoming, friendly, and very helpful. I have nothing negative to say at all, in fact I am already planning my next trip to Melbourne and if I can't get a room at the great southern hotel on my chosen dates I will CHANGE my dates to suit an available room. Thank you guys and look forward to my next trip. Eric & Theresa.

Great Southern is undergoing extensive renovations at the moment. So be aware there's quite a bit of banging and bashing going on during the day. My room was small but very clean and overlooked Spencer Street. Opening windows, too. The bathroom was very modern although the soap retainer and towel shelf had been pulled away from the wall, causing them to slope downwards. Handyman job there. The toiletries consisted of two small cakes of soap and a small bottle of 2 in 1 shampoo so nothing to lift the spirits there. No hand towels provided. The bed was comfortable, sheets spotless, extra blankets provided and good, plump pillows. The location is everything. Great Southern Railway is on the next block and everything is nearby. The 1903 restaurant looked interesting (next door to hotel) but the sound of the nail guns could be clearly heard from the hotel. Overall, the Great Southern Hotel Melbourne is very similar to the Great Southern Hotel Sydney. Reasonably priced rooms, clean and tidy without frills and the best thing is the location. I would definitely stay there again and for a longer time

Considerable construction work taking place which is inconvenient to all guests. Car parking is not guaranteed and not advised until you walk in the door and its too late.

The hotel was undergoing major renovations, so there was no lobby/waiting area, and rooms on lower floors were very noisy during the day. The staff did not go out of their way to compensate for the associated inconveniences. Additionally there was a charge for everything (baggage store, late checkout $10/hr, wireless internet ~$20/day).

We have stayed here about 4 times. We keep. Coming back because of position (close to train station), and price. On our first visit we could not get into the breakfast room (even though our breakfast had been pre-paid. It was absolutely chockablock with Chinese students running amok and barging in front of you, and talking very loudly, not a spare table to sit at and afew of their teachers or chaperones just sitting there reading books without even seeming to notice their charges' behaviour which was really very rude and obnoxious. The noise level was absolutely unbelievable and not a very pleasant place to have breakfast even if there had been a table available. On twice going to ckeckin desk to complain was told that the whole group were checking out at the same time, and when told that we were leaving and wanted our money back were informed because we had booked and paid through Booking Com that was not possible. We walked across to the station to have breakfast.. We have stayed since but never considered having breakfast there. So it appears to me the hotel caters for overseas tour groups who seem to take over everything.

Clean, basic and in the city. Exactly what I needed. A couple of minor criticism: 1) The courtyard onto which my door opened, echoed with voices and doors being closed; and 2) The courtyard's fluorescent lights bled into my room around the doorframe and blinds when my lights were turned off. Overall I was satisfied with my stay.

Once all renovations have been completed it will certainly be a very inviting place to stay again. Also the room I stayed in the smell of pizzas from the restuarant below was very overwhelming and made it quite sickly.

You get what you pay for, and if you can I advise to pay more! Room was clean and tidy and had everything you need although not well thought out. For example the wardrobe door does not open so you can't see the full length mirror and the air con is so noisy that you could never keep it on for it to be effective. I was in a courtyard standard room. It had been raining in Melbourne and all I could hear was water dripping, doors slamming and guests voices echoing all night. Bed is in need of an update as are the pillows. As i said, if you can afford a little extra stay somewhere else. I will not return.

I have stayed in youth hostels that were cleaner and cheaper than this. I stayed in a 'business room' i think it came up on the website as a superior double. There was nothing superior about this room. Old furniture and carpet, stained and looked dirty. Crusty white stains on the woolen blanket and left over black hair from the previous visitor was on the pillows. The shower was modern and clean but the shower head meant that you never got water all over you. The water was more like a light spray and didn't reach your feet. Horrendous for washing hair. The window in the room was blocked out with opaque frosting but not enough to block the light of the street lamp. Very old wooden bed that creaked and matching old matress that you sunk into. They charge $2 for leaving bags I never experienced this not being included in even a hostel price. The check in staff were friendly but this hotel is dirty and run down. Will not stay here again

Room was tiny and in poor repair with broken fixtures and non-functioning TV. Internet was available in the lobby for $6 per hour, but the service provider ("Net Kiosk") has terribly slow and unresponsive machines that were quite a ripoff for the money. Hotel staff claim to have contacted the Internet vendor, but such lousy service has no place in a modern travel environment, and should not be tolerated for any length of time. On the positive side, this hotel had the lowest rate in Melbourne, was right across the street from the main rail station ("Southern Cross"), and offered clean and quiet rooms. For a solo traveler it was a good value, but not appropriate for couples or family.

Staying in a budget single room I found the bathroom light and spacious which was really nice and the room cosy. The staff could have been a little more friendly and welcoming - they do their job but could do better. The cost for wifi is appalling so I went elsewhere otherwise very hand to Southern Cross station and great to go by foot or tram to other parts of city. Overall fine. I do think its pricey but again Melbourne is expensive as a city.

The hotel was reasonably priced, clean, and close to the river and convention center. There is a mix of both older and newer rooms. The older rooms are spacious but showing their age a bit and look out into an unkempt space between buildings. The newer rooms are small but comfortable. The bathroom walls in the newer rooms were basically a frosted glass--not 100% private. Most of the people working at the front desk were friendly and helpful, but there were one or two grumpy employees that I learned to avoid. Coffee lovers will not be satisfied with what's available in the hotel rooms or in the restaurant.
