This was our first visit to Matera, and its sassi area proved out to be even more beautiful and interesting than we had expected. An apartment above the caves and the church of San Giorgio was a pleasant surprise, so comfortable and and picturesque that we could have spent a whole week there. We could have spent We hadn't expected an apartment

My big thanks to Gianluca and Simona for their hospitality and warm friendship that made my life a lot easier in such environments. The heat in Matera in May almost killed me but anyway, since they let me stay in the same apartment where Mussolini used to stay and waved to his people on the same balcony for the price of 65 euros a night,I had such great memory of Matera and San Giorgio.I'll go back there in cooler month and hope to see Gianluca and Simona once again ! Cheers & Ciao !! Wasana

the cleaning of the room was not inlcuded but not stated in the website when reserving the room - the cleaning of the room is not included and this important fact should be clearly stated in the website of the residence and not discovered on site.

Residence San Giorgio is in the very heart of the Sassi. This is a magnificent area to visit, extremely unique and rich in historical significance. When my husband and I saw on the web page the type of rooms that were available in the heart of the Sassi, we could not resist the experience. Of course, one cannot get to Residence San Giorgio by car. We had to leave the car on the street down below and carry our luggages some 200 m. up some slippery steps. (Because you will not be able to use the wheels of your luggage all that well as you go up the steps, we suggest you bring up only the essential to lighten the load). The room although primitive in its looks (carved out of rock), had all the modern amenities, including a jacuzzi. The room also included steps going down to a wine and oil cellar, typical of the living quarters of the actual people that lived there years ago. We stayed there two nights and we had truly a magnificent experience. The buildings or residences in this area are very much alike. Outside of your room, you walk up or down some steps (narrow pathways) and you are in the middle of the spectacular Sassi, either by day or by night with all the buildings lit up, the view is spectacular. Breakfast was included with our stay, and it was available at this restaurant just a few steps down from the room. As you visit the Sassi, we recomment you take advantage of guided tours which are available daily, to help you truly understand and appreciate the Sassi, so unique and rich in history.

Some form of fans/air conditioning would have been nice to circulate air. Detailed map of Sassi location would have been useful.Local Police took us to the residence-my Wife fortunately speaks fluent Italian which helped. Kitchen equipment should have electric kettle. These are only suggestions. We really enjoyed our stay here. The owner was very pleasant and helpful. The accommodation itself was excellent. PS. You asked above about number of rooms-I have no idea

Residence San Giorgio is lovely. A complete apartment , beautifully decorated, charming. All facilities are new. Young manager/owner was lovely. Residence very difficult to find but manager came to collect us (a few minutes from accomm!) Terrific restaurant near the managers residence. Views of Matera sassi are wonderful from all round. Wonderful experience. A bit lonely for a single traveller.

Thrilled with this hotel. It's not too far to walk from the train station and the room and facilities were excellent.Fantastic location right in the middle of the Sassi and close to the main city hub too. Price was brilliant for all that was offered!

We did not understand from the website that it was an apartment--that was a pleasant surprise. Parking and finding the place were much more difficult than the website indicated but the staff were wonderful at helping us with all of that--Had to have a neighbor cal them from street to make the initial contact--that was sort of scary--no one in the main office when we arrived. A wonderful place overall tho--and their recommendations for dinner were excellent-- I would definitely stay there again and recommend it.

How to reach Residence San Giorgio
By car
Arriving from Bari, Taranto or Matera Nord the easiest access is in the proximity of the Villa Comunale in Via XX Settembre street (in the city center). Following the road signs, take Via d’Addozio the street leading to Sasso Barisano. Pass the Sant’Agostino Church on your left and proceed for about 300 meters through a slope. At the main crossroad of the Sassi, featuring a small fountain on the left and the Le Botteghe Restaurant in the front, turn right and follow until the balcony of Residence dei Gattoni at number 259 of Via Fiorentini street.
The second access to the Sassi is more comfortable for those arriving from Potenza, Metaponto or Matera Sud. It is situated near Via Ridola, near the Palazzo della Provincia. The road leads to the hotel through the Sasso Caveoso and the panoramic street of Via Madonna delle Virtù.
