Magical ! Great design, incorporating modern simple elements that compliment the ancient structure. Try to book a room with a view. Breakfast is excellent.Ask for a cappachino / espresso as the coffee they set out is not up to snuff.

Enjoyed Matera and the hotel. It was very different sleeping in a cave but it was extremely well appointed with a lovely bathroom with excellent soaps, shampoos etc. The breakfast was a pretty good buffet. Although it was fairly expensive, one pays for the location in a most unusual area. I would recommend this hotel.

This hotel is certainly lovely in a fantastic city. Our room with a balcony overlooking the church was lovely if a little sparsely decorated. Staff in the restaurant were extremely helpful and friendly.

In any other location, finding reception, each bedroom and the restaurant in separate "caves", each with its own front door and a network of steps linking them would have been a disappointment. Here it is part of the character of this amazing place and the staff were both professional and friendly. As I only visited for two days and wanted to see the town at night I did not sample the restaurant but from what I saw of the chef and the amazing selection and service at breakfast I can believe it would be a treat.

Fascinating area, novel to live in (luxurious) cave (all rooms are traditional cave houses). Good breakfast in another spacious cave close by, but no hotel restaurant for dinner, though recommended one was great, good service and good food. You mustn't mind steps in this area, and car is parked by hotel staff so you'll have to allow time to collect and deliver. Desk staff very helpful to us. Antiquities fascinating - but some closed!

Fantastic hotel located inside the "Sassi" the most interesting part of Matera. Recently restructured it is a quite and romantic 4 stars hotel professionally managed by the new owners, a really friendly couple. I strongly suggest it.

well ..... i do applaude one guy for his "principles" .... I asked to check out late by an hour and the lady wanted to agree but this guy said something in italian and clearly, it was contrary to my wishes .... and if they do have a free computer when i asked but my request to use the internet was rejected .... if you want assertive service staff to say NO to you, here is your choice ... my room was spacious but there was a staircase leading up to what seemed like a control room for electronics .... very dusty indeed .... and there was a painting covering a very dusty spot right at the door .... curiosity kills the cat, I suppose i deserved to get dust blown into my face

We were absolutely stunned by Matera, a crazy hilltop town built from caves ("Sassi")within the hillside. Fantastic medieval architecture, and wonderful that it is still used and "living" , as is the Hotel Sant'Angelo. Our room was completely inside a cave and with wonderful modern minimalist decor. A place a quarter as smart as this in somewhere like London would cost thousands to stay in!(Not that London has caves) Price very reasonable. It was quiet and cool, combining ancient with all mod cons. Lady on reception made us feel very welcome. Thoroughly reconmended. The town is steep, and very hot in the summer so perhaps not recommended for young famililes or people with walking difficulties. We had a great stay - thank you.

We were in Matera 35 years ago and were shown the Sassi by a couple of kids. It was very run down and had only recently (a few years previously) been evacuated. Since then, some of the Sassi have been turned into hotels and restaurants, but in an extraordinarily tasteful and respectful way. This hotel is one of them. We stayed in a rebuilt building and our friends stayed in an updated cave. Both were beautifully restored and comfortable. Dining was in an elegant cave also. There are good restaurants in the town. We also explored some of the old unrestored caves which were homes and churches. Amazing art.

A truly wonderful hotel. The decor is beautiful, the staff very helpful. Nice little touches, for example a souvenir guidebook and a rose presented to us on arrival. The only small complaint would be that the parking charge is not mentioned until it appears on your bill when you're checking out.

I would love to stay at this hotel again, however there is only so much to do in Matera itself, hence I cannot see myself returning, if I did this is where I would certainly stay. Plenty of car parking in the square near the hotel and located right at the bottom of the Sassi area. Not easy to find by car from maps on web site or directions given.
