This hotel was great. The staff were helpful and made every effort to communicate to us. There was wireless, but it didn't work well in the room. Best of all was the location - yes in a cave hotel, and right in the area of Sassi where you will see the famous world heritage sites, which is a village carved from rock. The room was very spacious, bed comfortable with extra blankets, the heat worked great, the bathroom was good with a heated towel rack where I could dry my clothes quickly, and the water was hot: what more could we ask for! There were lots of little restarants around plus a supermarket a ten minute stroll uphill. The breakfast was included and was breads, yogurt, coffees, fruits, cereals and sweets were more than enough. Highly recommend this place! We loved it and will come back again!

Wonderful modern suite with jaccuzzi bath carved out of the caves - very romantic if a little damp and dark, but hey it's a hotel carved in the caves. Staff friendliness and hotel facilities could be improved. Matera itself is great for history, walking, exploring the caves, sights etc with many nice resteraunts. Got to have strong legs for all the steps up/down!

Hotel Caveoso is well situated for walking to the major attractions of Matera - as long as you don't mind stairs which are hard to avoid if you really want to explore this unique town. Staff do not speak a lot of English but are very friendly and helpful. Very are good - not overly big being carved into the tuff restricts size. Clean, very comfortable with good views. We stayed 2 nights and were very satisfied with everything. Would recommend Caveoso to friends.

We were here 4 nights and it was quite a lovely experience staying at Hotel Caveoso and in the Sassi. I can highly recommend staying here! As others mentioned, the rooms are humid, but that is the nature of the stone - all part of the experience! Do note that you can only get internet access outside of your room, close to the reception area - nothing penetrates the stone, even cell phone access. You will love it here!

We wish that we could have stayed more than the one night here, but time would not allow us to. It was an unusual experience in very beautiful surroundings.

The room, which was inside a traditional cave-house, was too humid (89%), since the air-conditioning did not work and the two small air-dryer supplied were not enough to reduce the humidity of such a wide room.

The hotel is a dream. Built as a cave. Humidity is a big challenge, but you forget it all as you are in a spectacular place. The sorroundings are incredible as the city has its history starting in the paleolitic. Eat some mozzarella and wine in a a quiet piazza in front of a church in a summer evening. You won't forget it.

First time in Matera, and staying in the Caveoso Hotel greatly contributed to making it a perfect stay. Nice place, well located into one of the most beautiful area of the Sassi, just below the Monterone rock and the Mona de Idris church. Having a parking for free on the St Pietro piazza is a must in such a place. Our daughter enjoyed the staff friendlyness and their patience to support her 4-year old energy. Being off season, we couldn't have dinner in the hotel, and that's the only regret when our day was tiring.

Beautiful hotel with great view in beautiful town (warning: whole thing is on a hill, so there's lots of climbing and descent, most of which has to be on foot because of limited access). Staff extremely friendly -- even noticed from my passport that it was my birthday and gave us a bottle of prosecco on the house. It's a bit pricey, but you get what you pay for.

We stayed in Matera for one night. The hotel was very nice, clean, spacious, with a fridge, statellite TV, comfortable beds, nice shower/tub and a balcony overlooking the church on the top of the hill. Our room had a window opening to the balcony, and the ceiling was curved in a rocky arch. Some rooms appeared to be totally into the cave wall. The breakfast area we ate in was actually in a cave. Fresh fruit, cafe, yoghurt and pastries were the order of the day. Matera is a very unique city with many buildings carved out of the rocky walls that rise above a very deep central ravine. Incredible place to visit.

The proprietors & staff members were the most wonderful people! I would definitely recommend Hotel Caveoso. However, remember to bring slippers to wear on your feet if your accommodations are a large cave room, like ours was, for the floors were a little dusty in parts. You could not see it, only feel it.. but it is a cave, which is what I was seeking, so that is to be expected (!). Also, great breakfast (included) & breakfast room. Too bad this website will not accept my photos. Have several great ones!

A unique experience with the rooms built into the rock. Our room was an external room with windows. Some other rooms built further into the rock offered a more cavelike experience, but could be a bit musty. Good breakfast. Amazing surroundings right in the heart of the Sassi Caveoso.

This place is in one of the areas in town with the caves. Unique and brilliant area. The place can be difficult to reach though as you have to navigate the steep streets through Matera to get here. We stayed in a room that was actually a cave - but then with the luxuries of a proper hotel room. The staff were friendly and competent. I can recommend this place to anyone.

Matera is fascinating out of season. The sassi are delightful, and the countryside beautiful, while modern Matera is a busy and sophisticated contrast to the grim relics. We gave it a day; it deserves well more.

The hotel is in a beautiful location and excellently converted. The staff were outstandingly helpful when our hire car was unfortunately stolen. The food was very good and the sassi area is full of little restaurants and bars.

Beautiful and quiet small hotel in the heart of the sasso Caveoso. Wonderfully located, it allows you to visit Matera on foot and relax yourself when you get back from the ups and downs in town to your caveosa room.

This is the second stay at Caveoso and fully satisfied as same as the first stay I had one year ago. I stayed room at second floor of a small annex building located between reception and church, and the room was less humid than the room with cave. Air conditioning works perfect. Short distance to Sassi is the first priority in my reason to stay the hotel. Fully satisfied.

I found the staff unfriendly and unhelpful but that may be due to my lack of Italian. (They were nicer to my husband who is fluent.) Nevertheless, for the price I found the hotel a bit unwelcoming.

Matera is a dream. The old cave/houses are spread along zig-zag paths & staircases on the upper part of the side of a steep ravine. Caveoso is at the lowest level, very close to a large piazza with plenty of parking space. Rooms are part cave & part masonry vault. Hosts very welcoming & super view from our room. Abundant breakfast & outstanding capuccino. Free internet in room, just ask for a patch cable. Excellent restaurants all round. Easy walk up the stairs or along the road through the old houses to the 19th century town centre at the top which has lots of good shops & fills up with anyone who's anyone for the evening passeggiata.

Very unique property, located in the ancient sassi of Matera. Our room was built onto front of the actual sassi long ago and had domed ceiling, tile floors, and outstanding view of the sassi. Very nice property, quiet, good breakfast. Only major shortcoming we experienced: VERY hard to find! Sassi area is huge and mazelike, we arrived at night and had terrible time finding it, had to go on foot, asked numerous townspeople for directions before finally stumbling into owner who had come out looking for us! I would strongly recommend arriving in daytime with explicit directions. Loved it once we found it, never have stayed anywhere like it.

We were surprised to find we had an absolutely lovely suite waiting for us with authentic views. Guiseppe at the front desk was extremely helpful setting up tours and he makes a wonderful cappacino at breakfast. Breakfast was great and even included items indigenous to Matera. Piero, the other staff member, took time to assist me in my family history quest. 2 outside sitting areas lend a feel of comfort and serenity for quiet reading with a bottle of wine or just to sit and chat with other guests. Such modern conveniences in such ancient surroundings! Perfect!

This tucked away gem of a hotel was wonderful. We wish we could have stayed longer. Call when you get near Matera for detailed directions on how to find Caveoso. It is tricky, but a local man was delightfully helpful when we asked for assistance. Parking in the square was not a problem in late September.

When I checked in the hotel, I was so gratefull because I was able to stay a room with small caves which I desired for. The true Matera room! In the room, there were three de-humidifier. I realized shortly, the equipment is required because the room is very humid without them. The hotel also has rooms without cave, it could be more dry and comfortable. Even though the high humidity, I had no intention to request to change the beautiful room with small caves.
