We chose this hotel because it was close to the station and we had to take an early train next morning. We arrived early and hoped to leave our cases so that we could sight-see. We were given an excellent welcome by a friendly english speaking receptionist, and allowed straight to our room, which was small but adequate.Clean sheets and towels, close to metro and good price in a good location. The only drawback was some very noisy guests in an adjacent room. Would return if ever going back to Marseilles. Breakfast 10 euros but we declined. Very small lift!!

We were lucky to get a special low season price, otherwise 115 €uros for a double room is much more than what the standard of the hotel is worth. First we got a weird problem of key, not fitting because there were something wrong in the lock : first the guy of the reception answered as if he just did'nt trust me, since it was obvious that he was trying to give us a room well known as having a key problem ! So we had some argument no that pleasant and finaly he gave us another room. About the rooms : correct, but not 3 stars standart !!! Getting the light in the room was quite funny : one lamp on the small desk :we had to put the wire of the lamp into the socket because there was no switch !!! Two lights on either side of the bed : we finaly found the switches behind the bedside tables, but only one was working... For the breakfast, since 10 € seems a little bit too much, we had it on another place on the Canebière, for less money and better standard... Beds are good, sonorisation is awfull : we could ear all the arguments between a man and his wife, who were in the next room, as if we were living with them. So one advice : if you book with special rate, I mean 50 or 55 €uros, it's all right, but for the current price 115 € for two people, it is really too much...

Pluses: big room, clean bathroom, large windows, lift, cheerful breakfast area, interesting area within walking distance of TGV station and old port, Minuses: little shelf space, no shower curtains, slightly musty smell to the room, very soft bed.

The staff at New Hotel Select are all very friendly. The front desk were all obliging. The cleaning staff had smiles & were friendly. Nearby, great mid-price Moroccan food at Dar Nejma, 15 Cours Julien. Around the corner we LOVED Pitchou's, Blvd Athenes. 3.50 euro bread rolls with varous fillings and frites! Down near the port, for a nice tiny bar with warmth, Le Pointu, cnr Cours Honore d'Estienne d'Orves & Cours Jean Ballard. We wished we stayed in Marseille longer. We would choose this hotel again.

An excellent budget hotel, nothing fancy but very centrally located. The staff were very helpful, welcoming and friendly. Some rooms overlook the Boulevard de Athenes which is very busy at all times and more than somewhat noisy, but you are in the middle of a very busy city so that is oly to be expected. Very conveniently located for those travelling by train.

Stay was fine, Breakfaset not included and a bit pricy at 10 euros for a basic table. Had a problem checking out because rate was supposed to be PREPAID and my receit said so. Desk person wanted to charge my card again saying they did not charge my card at time fo reservation. Turned out later they were correct, but they were real jerks about it, even locking the front door so I couldn't leave and caused me to miss my train. VENERE needs to reword their pre-paid receits to avoid this problem.

Hotel is generally OK but the rooms are pretentious and it doesn't "come off". Bathroom could have been cleaner. Staff were awful! The person who checked me in didn't speak to me once! Was more interested in an argument with someone else. Checkout person too busy with being awkward with a cleaner.

The room is the worst I have ever experienced. I travel extensivly for a living , and I a member of many Hotel and Airline frequent traveler program, and I can safely say this Hotel ranks dead last of all I have stayed in. The room I stayed in smelled like it recently had a fire. The walls were paddded with an unrecognizable, material. There was a hole in the wall directly behind the bed, and we were expecting something to crawl out. We did not sleep, we waited for daylight with our cloths on, we could not wait to leave. If not that it was late, raining we did not speak the language, and were extremely tired, we would of walked out, and found an alternate hotel. What a dunp! I wand my money back! Rodolfo Barthelemy

The sewerage of all the rooms above ours ran through our closet and made a lot of noise whenever somebody took a shower or flushed a toilet, which happened quite a lot. The staff wasn't all that multilingual. There was no car rental in the hotel. There was no satelite TV. The alarm clock didn't work. We had two days without hot water. I couldn't find a modem plug.

The hotel is located ideally for sightseeing, very close to the Old Port. Unfortunately, this is also the most run-down part of Marseille which does not feel secure at all. It appears that many hotels in the area have already run out of business because of that. The Hotel Select badly needs some renovation works. The public areas are ok and the rooms are spacious, but everything inside is very much worn out and shabby. There were some mysterious stains on the bathroom ceiling, and the bed cover had cigarette burns on it. Brace yourself for a no-so-quiet night as most rooms face a very busy avenue and there is no double glazing. The good thing is that the hotel is air-conditioned, which is a must in summer. Finally, the price at which you can book thru Venere is higher than their public week-end price (they have a discounted price from Fri, Sat and Sun). All in all, I would recommend staying there if you are backpacking or on a budget.

We thought that this was a great deal. The room was spacious and very nicely decorated. It was within a 1 min walk from the Marseilles train station and a short walk to the Old Port (but without the cost of the hotels in the Old Port!). The area is slightly sketchy at night, but during the day it is great.

This is a very nice small hotel situated well in Marseilles both near the railway station and the Vieux Port. The staff are friendly, welcoming and gracious. The rooms were well furnished, clean and quiet. I stayed for two days in February and will return again on my next visit. I had two minor complaints which is why I have rated the service in my review as only average. I requested room service breakfast by leaving the ticket on the doorknob. When the breakfast did not come, I called room service and they sent breakfast right away. The ticket was still on the doorknob outside when I opened the door. Additonally, when I checked out, I was charged for two breakfasts when I had only had ordered one. These were small things which were immediately corrected. Room service sent breakfast in five minutes and the desk manager deducted the overcharge immediately with an apology. So, it may be that the service rating is appropriately rated as average for my sejour but the hotel response to correct them was excellent.

The service was average, some of the staff was very helpful but seemed to lack knowledge to assist with many inquries. The room gave the overall impression of negligence. Stains on the carpets, dirt in some areas. It would help tourists if more local information such as area maps and sites and restos were provided in the room. Phone instructions were not listed. We did not feel safe in the area that is somewhat dirty and run down. Taxis did not want to take us to the hotel from the train station because it's such a small distance and yet there is no shuttle service or easy method of getting to the hotel if one carries a lot of bags.
