Hotel Le Ryad - Marseille

Great hotel (phantastic rooms, clean, friendly service), but located on a quite dirty street (urin smell, waste, etc. close to the hotel entry).

Enjoyed all aspects of my stay in this hotel. It is a good address. Staff extremely friendly and welcoming. Clean, quiet and spacious suite. Excellent value for money.

Le Ryad is well-located, about a 5-10 minute walk to the harbor and just off Le Canebiere, a large, busy boulevard. I would not wander the side streets in the dark, but the boulevard was crowded at night and seemed very safe. It is not on a main tourist street, but it is only a very short walk to shopping and the subway stop. Perhaps because it was on the 4th floor, our room was very quiet. We had the best sleep of our vacation at Le Ryad. There is no elevator, which may make staying on the upper floors difficult for those with mobility impairments. Hauling my luggage up those stairs in the heat was not fun! However, once we got there, the room was beautiful -- cool, clean, and airy. The minimalist Maghreb-inspired decor seems much more suited to the Marseilles heat than other more fussy, over-stuffed, French-style hotel rooms we had. The public areas are equally calming, especially the small garden in back. Because it was on the 4th floor, our small balcony overlooked the harbor, the hills, and the cathedral. Watching the city lights turn on at twilight was magical and romantic. Having the balcony was well-worth the climb. Ask for the "Mogador" room if you want it. As well, Le Ryad has by far the best breakfast my husband and I had during our 10-day stay in the south of France. (Note: we were generally staying in 2 star hotels). There were fresh, warm blinis, homemade bread, and a very generous selection of fresh fruit. The hospitality was friendly and personal. I speak some French, so cannot speak for the experience of English-only visitors. However, I found the staff chatty, informative, and full of good advice about where to eat nearby. Le Ryad is not a luxury hotel by any means -- but it is a charming and stylish oasis in a busy city. Since it was recommended by Gault Millau this year, book early! We could only get one night of two there. Our other hotel was pleasant, but we enjoyed Le Ryad much more.

Design is nice, staff friendly, location not so convenient as expected. my room on the street side was rather noisy, although if i were to stay again i would make sure to ask for a room on the garden side (possibly a bit quieter) internet did not function in room but worked fine in the common area, unfortunately this was 5 flights of stairs for me. I most likely would spend another 20euros and stay somewhere a bit closer to the water.

Very nice hotel, very friendly staff and pretty moroccan ambiance.
