It was the location of the hotel as much as it's amenities that made our stay in Madrid very enjoyable. It is within comfortable walking distance from Madrid's excellent Metro and RENF trains as well as the major museums and shopping precincts. The hotel was comfortable but not luxurious but we slept well each night.

Hotel Plaza Mayor is certainly in the heart of Madrid. Centrally located, it is within walking distance of almost everything. The staff was very helpful and fluent in English. The room was relatively small and at the end of a long, convoluted hallway. The only other door out to a small plaza could not be opened -- it was fairly warm and stuffy in the room. If the air conditioning does not work well, it could be plenty hot during the summer. I'd also worry about escape in the event of fire. Breakfast was not included, and seemed overpriced for what was offered. At a prime location near Plaza Mayor (personally, not impressed) and Plaza del Sol, there was an ATM right across the street -- with two homeless people seeming to have taken up permanent residence next to it. Still, we had no problems (despite an unsuccessful pickpocket attempt at nearby Mercado de San Miguel). This isn't Des Moines, after all!

Very disappointed with the mgmt. Hotel did not specifically state that it was Easter holiday and minimum stay was 2 days with no refunds. We stayed 1 night instead of the original 3 nights booked and had to pay for the other 2 nights because of the EAster holiday. That detail should have been identified at time of making the reservation.

This is a small downtown Madrid hotel that is a great value for the location. Less than 100 Euros for a clean, well located hotel is excellent. Clean and for us, quiet, no noise issues. Smallish room, but still adequate. 2 breakfast options, 6 Euros for cold and no seconds and 8.50 Euros for hot with seconds permitted. A bit hard to find due to the one-way streets, just follow Atocha inbound to Plaza Mayor.

Very bad experience and very unhappy.... to live in this small hotel for my holiday. Actually, I will go to Madrid every 2 months and already tried to live in many different star of hotels. Firstly, the staff of the hotel is very unfriendly and not polite at all. I booked a double room for myself to live more comfortable. Unfortunately, the room is so dark and is on the first floor and the window is faced to the interior and actually you can't open it. The wall is like a paper, you may hear everything when you want to sleep! the shower is the smallest circular one I have seen. When I request to change the room, the woman said no!!!! More, so many stairs in the corridor when I need to pick up my big luggage by myself and the staff will not help you anything, really bad!!!!!!!!! .Actually, it is not difficult to find a good and budget hotel in Madrid and there are so many choice, But I will not recommend my friends staying here in future. :(

We have stayed here before and the price, service, room are all excellent. We are an older couple. Some might not like the proximity to Plaza Mayor but the hotel is very centrally located and it is easy to walk to many sights, restaurants and other places. We had to stay at another hotel because there were no rooms available at Hotel Plaza Mayor and although in the same area was not even close to as nice. We would choose this hotel for any of our visits to Madrid. The breakfast is a good value also.

Our standard room on 5th floor was extremely small. The shower cubicle was so small that it was almost impossible to bend down in, unless you were a contortionist. The big plus was the location as it was just a minute from the Plaza Mayor, and it was within 10 to 15 minutes walk from most of the main sites. The breakfast area was over-heated and somewhat cramped. The 7.50 euros for breakfast was not a bagain unless you want to eat the hot food as well as the rest on offer. Better value could be found nearby, our favourite being Le Pain Quotidien on the Plaza, especially the basket of a variety of 5 or 6 wonderful organic breads, a feast for 2 people at 6.50 euros, organic jams and coffee. Excellent service every day, and the offer of a rug to put over your legs if it was a little chilly!

Location, location, location!! I wanted a hotel that was centrally located in Madrid. You could not ask for a better location. Just across from the Plaza Mayor where there is never a lack of action or places to eat or shop. Also, just a block away from Puerta del Sol. This is a great place for access to shopping, restaurants and close to metro stops. It appears to be recently rennovated and the staff is friendly, helpful and speak several languages. Rooms were clean and quiet. I highly recommend this hotel. Reasonably priced, great location, helpful employees. What more could you ask?

We had a wonderful four days in Madrid and the hotel was grand. I was somewhat disappointed with the room size but I suppose it is what you get for the price in what was admittedly an excellent location, with Plaza Mayor in sight and Plaza Santa Ana only a three minute walk away. Staff were friendly and efficient and while we wouldn' t return to this hotel, it' s only because I would pay a bit more for a larger room and some basic facilities, such as a fridge, hairdryer and ironing board/iron.

The location was perfect--we walked everywhere we wanted to go in the city. The rooms were very small, as is typical in a big city hotel, but clean and adequate. The staff were helpful and friendly. We spent our first two nights in Spain in this hotel, and found it to be the perfect location for exploring the city.

The hotel is in an excellent location, within walking distance of the Prado museum, El Rastro market, the Retiro park and of course the Plaza Mayor. If you need to take the Metro the Sol station is only a few minutes walk away. The room (triple) was clean and the beds were good, it could have done with a few chairs but other than that everything was in order. We were in an end room on the first floor and found it to be fairly quiet, some noise from traffic outside. The staff were very polite and spoke good English. They were also helpful, the handset on our shower was a bit leaky on the first morning but it was replaced immediately when we mentioned this. We didn't take breakfast in the hotel because there are so many places all over town. We enjoyed our stay and would recommend the hotel to anyone looking for clean and comfortable accomodation in the city centre at a decent price.

Fantastic location right by Plaza Mayor, about two-three blocks to Sol Metro station. Very reasonable rates, clean rooms, free wi-fi, and location, location, location. My single room was small and its window opened out to the air shaft, but no complaints. Only thing to be careful about is that, unlike most European hotels of this class, breakfast is NOT included. Charged 7-8 euros for orange sugar water, coffee, and pretty sorry buffet breakfast. Otherwise, highly recommended.

Very convenient location. Close to Puerta del Sol and Plaza Mayor.Tiny room, very clean and comfortable bed. The woman who work after 3p.m. at reception was very nice and very helpful, but the other woman who work on the morning is not very nice and helpful, she only tried to help me to carry my luggage when her boss in front of her, she did nothing when nobody in front of her! :( Be warned there is a lift in the hotel but you will still need to climb stairs with all your belonging and the front desk woman will not expect to help you if her boss is not in front of her.)

Very convenient location. Close to Puerta del Sol and Plaza Mayor. 20-minute walk to the Atocha train station (which can also be reached by metro). Staff in general was friendly. However, walls are paper-thin & not sound-proof at all. When the person took shower next door, I thought he/she was in my room!

I went to visit Spain with a girlfriend of mine. We wanted a centrally located and safe hotel. Plaza Mayor provided all that. The room(303) was great. It faced the plaza, was light, and fairly roomy for a small European hotel. The closet was quite small. The bathroom was big(tub only), but we had no place to put our stuff except on top of the sink. Also I think they should remove the desk in the bedroom and replace it with a dresser. Overall I loved the place and its location and definetely would stay there again

We were two women on our first trip to Madrid, and found Plaza Mayor to be a wonderful hotel for location and value. We had a non-smoking room over looking a small plaza. The room had two large windows with small balconies, very pleasant and clean. The hotel was very quiet and also close to everything - Sol, metro, shopping, supermarkets, restaurants. This is a basic no-frills hotel in a great location.

Tiny room, double bed uncomfortable and cover a bit raggedy, position of t.v. was at ceiling (?!). Sad view of ventilation fan. Not sure if I would stay again even with good price with bed & pillow being so uncomfortable. However, did spot the interior of a larger room that was much nicer looking. Might have just been my room. But was clean enough and great location. It served it's purpose for one night.

The Plaza Mayor was prefect for my stay in Madrid. It was very close to the centre of the city. The surroundings were quiet with lots of places to eat nearby. The Hotel more than met my needs. The room was very clean, staff helpful, over all stay was very good. Once you are situated, the hotel is easy to find from the Sol metro stop. A number of sights within easy walking distance. I encountered no problem with my stay other than the early check in, as I flew in from the USA, wasn't available due to the people in the room assigned for me had not checked out yet. My only regret is that I didn't have more time in Madrid.

Hotel Plaza Mayor is an excellent location for a weekend stay in Madrid. Room comfortable with no frills, but this didn't matter because of central location and good choice of places to eat nearby. We had a large room on the fifth floor. There was a lift, but worth taking the stairs at least once to see the photos of the hotel over the years.

A lovely clean and friendly Hotel. The breakfast buffet was fresh with excellent choice. We had a superior room that was very spacious. There was no bath as the hotel is trying to do it's bit to conserve water, but the shower was big enough for two if it's romance your after! The location could not be any better, at the very heart of the centre, next to the "Plaza Mayor" I would not hesitate in recommending this hotel to anyone else.

We stayed here for 4 nights and we both love and hate it. Location is perfect, just so handy to all the sights in Madrid and lots of nice eateries around. A very lively part of Madrid but at the same time you are sheltered from street noise. Staff was excellent, very friendly (but not too much) and gave excellent advice. The thing we hated was about the bed bug. We didn't know that the bed spread was full of them and as days went by we were both covered in bites. Very nasty. The room was kind of small, so if you could get those corner ones you should, as I think they offer much better space and view. Apart from the bed bugs I had absolutely no complaints - but will I stay there again? I am not that sure...

Location is excellent for access to all the sights in Madrid but getting to it from the undergound is only easy once you know the way, so check the location guide carefully. I loved this hotel. The location just steps from Plaza Mayor was unbeatable, and the windows were so good that no noise got into the room. The bathroom was large, and we had a corner room, and we could see a corner of Plaza Mayor from our windows. Restaurants, including the great Museo de Jamon, are within a couple minutes walk. Plaza Santa Ana is also close, and there are many tapas bars in that area. Also close: Puerta del Sol (5 min.), Palacio Real (12 minutes), El Prado and the Thiessen (15-20 minutes down Calle de Las Huertas--lots of restaurants and tapas off this street), Reina Sophia Museum (20 min.), Parque Buen Retiro (20 min.). A brief story: we were tired when we arrived, and I inadvertently left 3 very good and pricey wines in a carry box outside of our room door. I didn't notice until we were packing to leave, but the wine was taken while it was outside the door. I told the lovely woman at reception that it was missing. Long story short, we left the hotel without our wine, but when we returned to the Hotel for our last 2 nights in Spain, the young lady at reception was smiling broadly... sure enough, she had our wine! I really loved this hotel, and if you're careful with your stuff, everything should be OK .

Enjoyed our stay. Great location. Near Sol Metro stop - handy to/from airport. Asked for a quiet room & got one at rear of hotel. Room & bathroom were spotlessly clean. Only issue was size of room & particularly of the bathroom. While it's classified as a hotel, I think it's really at the top end of Hostal standard but charging about 50% more.

This reservation was for our honeymoon trip, but I wouldn't recommend this to all honeymooners. Though the rooms were very clean and up-to-date, they were also very small, as were the beds. Bed and pillows were also uncomfortable. Another downside was the unlit hallways leading to rooms--too dark to see door numbers and a potential safety hazard. But, staff was friendly and helpful, it's conveniently close to Puerto del Sol and Estacion Atocha...just needs a few bugs worked out. I did love laying on the bed with windows open and hearing the street musicians play below, though.

The hotel is very centrally located within a block of Plaza Mayor; if you don't want to stay in a primarily touristy part of town, don't pick this hotel BUT the hotel is an excellent place to stay. The staff is extremely helpful and friendly, the facility is clean, the breakfast buffet is an excellent value. After experiencing various showers in France and Spain, the shower here was great. The room was not lavishly appointed but very nicely decorated and roomy. We would definitely stay here again and recommend it highly.

Great location - room (on the side of the hotel) was very quiet at night - almost too much so - you could hear the swish of trousers as someone walked down the corridor outside the room ! The service was good and unobtrusive. Room and hotel public areas lovely and clean and room service everyday. You are within two minutes of the Puerta del Sol and a minute from the Plaza Mayor. We didn't have breakfast at the hotel - far too many options outside - the Museum del Jamon being a favourite. If you want a good value hotel in a fantastic location, this is it.

An excellent location for everything we wanted to see and do. We had a corner room overlooking the front of the building which was fine for everything except noise at night. We expected this as we know Madrid is a big, lively city. We used our earplugs and slept well. Staff were extremely helpful. When we decided to stay an extra night, they found us a room without a fuss, smaller but also quieter, and perfectly acceptable considering our last-minute change of plans. We didn't eat breakfast at the hotel as we only needed coffee and a croissant, but we enjoyed the Cafe Corner across the little square from the hotel: good coffee and friendly people.

We booked flights first after finding a great price with Ryanair. We then researched hotels, using tripadvisor & the Lonely Planet guide, (we buy these books for most locations we visit - their info on all aspects is accurate & ad-free). Plaza Mayor seemed to offer a great location for a decent standard city hotel. Venere's price was excellent, (especially as you don't actually pay until you leave the hotel)! On arriving we found the location was superb, just off Plaza Mayor. Whilst our room was small, it was very clean and the lobby/breakfast/reception area was pleasant. Staff were tremendous, always very polite and helpful. Our safe jammed one day, yet this was sorted for when we returned and we were lent 50 Euros, (as our cash was in the safe). Food in Madrid is excellent, with a vast choice. Lonely Planet have some great recommendations, but there are lots of other great places to eat. Madrid is also suprisingly walkable for a major city, (& there's a good Metro system too). Lots of plazas and small adjoining streets offer lots of interesting features, plus cafes & shops. We were amazed at the amount of green space in Madrid - lovely parks in which to chill out. For the football fan, the Bernabeu stadium tour is well worth the trip up the Metro. The only downside curently is the strength of the Euro, making everything a bit pricey, (but it is a capital city). Also, whilst the Plaza Mayor is wonderful to sit in enjoying a drink, beware - the bars in the plaza are perhaps the most expensive in the city. Other lovely spots can be enjoyed for a lot less. If you haven't been to Madrid - go!

I found the hotel at the Venere.com website. I reserved the room by Internet, and I immediately got back a feedback to confirm it. The hotel staff was informed about my reservation, they were very nice, and we (with my wife) were very satisfied with the services and the circumstances. The hotel is clean, quiet, and very near to the Plaza Mayor and the Plaza del Sol, so we could reach everything (Museums, historical buildings and places) by walk from the hotel. I warmly suggest everybody to use Hotel Plaza Mayor if visits in Madrid.

Location, location, location!!! What a rare bargain 30 seconds from the hub of Plaza Major. Would highly recommend room 205. Spacious/clean/basic bed and bath/shower with a view! Tip: The City Hall (Ayuntamiento) tour is only on Monday at 5 pm as most of the city is closed on MONDAYS. It's 5 minutes from the hotel. We happened on it by chance...what a great tour and FREE! Also try dinner at Sobrino de Botin, the oldest restaurant still in operation in the world also 5 mins. away. Great food and ambience!
