I travelled on my own to Madrid and found Hotel Moderno to be an extremely successful choice of accomodation. I was literally 4 minutes from the SOL metro station and max 20 minutes from the Royal Palance and Cathedral of Almudena. The fact that a farmacy, curio shop, restaurent and Starbucks was 3 minutes away made my life extremely easy. Hotel staff were friendly and when asking for help were quick to try and assist. I would recommend this hotel to friends and family.

I think they are a little too strict & inconsistent on the 'no room visitors' policy. It is my holiday afterall & I should be able to have in my room who I like if I've paid for it. They let me have a visitor one night (which I had to pay for as an extra on checking out) but not on another night. This was extremelly rude of the hotel staff and embarrassing for me having to turn my friend away.

The hotel is well located close to the city centre and to many of the tourist attractions. The hotel was adequate for a short stay although rooms were quite small with noise from adjacent rooms an annoyance during the night. Staff were helpful. Internet access and breakfast were additonal costs.

Location is fabulous. Staff (except cleaning woman was very, very nice and helpful) neither friendly nor helpful, almost verged on hostile. There was a big beautiful lounge on second floor.

The hotel is a clean, good location. Staff was fine. I had an upset stomach when arriving at 11pm. The person at the desk offered to get a club soda ( which was nice ) but, then was charged 5 euros for 2 cans of soda! Trying to find parking was quite difficult. Would not recommend if you have a car but, is very close to metro.

PERFECT location. Vibrant on the outside, calm on the inside. Good value for money. Great pastry shop (this one seems very well known in Madrid) right across the street. Can nip in and out all day to rest up and then go out again and explore.

The hotel is amazingly well located, in the hear of the city and on a walking distance from vitually all major touristic attraction. It has a good wireless Internet access and it's reasonably quiet given its location in a busy center. Other pro is the cleanliness of the room. However, it's major flaw lies in the service provided by the staff. The service is far from warm, and receptionists sometimes looked bored for being "incomodated" by questions from the guests, such as the location of touristic attraction. Some of them, mainly the old ones, unfortunately sometimes comes close to be rude. Overall, though, for sure the stay is a good value for money. However, it could be much more improved if the staff were more warm and helpful.

Good location right on the edge of Puerto del Sol, ideal for walking to all the main sights of Madrid e.g. Plaza Mayor, Prado, Palacio Real, Retiro Park etc. Also a short walk to the red light district of Gran Via if you're that way inclined! Rooms small but comfy. One word of warning: the web page states that a buffet breakfast is available from 7:30 to 11:00, but is not included in the price (extra cost 11 euro pp) Overall a good location for exploring Madrid. Beware of Callos a la Madrilena and Orejas a la Plancha!

The Moderno---while not actually too "moderno" is a basic and adequate hotel admirably located on the Puerta del Sol. It is a little threadbare and in need of an upgrade but, considering the price and location, it provides a reasonably good deal for the (predictably) tiny rooms. I would recommend it---understanding the limitations expressed above.

Great location! All major sites were within walking distance and we enjoyed stralling in the busy streets of Old Madrid. There are excellent breakfast options in the neighborhood, where we coud mingle with the locals and savour great Spanish pastries and churros! The Hotel staff was very friendly and helpful. Our room was somehow small, but we did not expect anything bigger in a city hotel.

A small clean family-run hotel, right on the Arenale, a pedestrian street, within easy walking distance of all the sights. Upsides: great location, friendly staff and management, clean rooms. Downsides: road-facing rooms will experience a lot of noise, especially on Saturday night when the town parties. Rooms may be a little too small for some tastes. Overall: a fairly good value package. Marked '0' where I have no view and software has forced a field to be filled in.

We really enjoyed the hotel, aside from some of the staff at the front desk. The location is VERY easy to find and in the perfect spot! Pretty much in the city center, easy to get to via metro or taxi. Great to walk around the area, lots of shops and food. They let us check in upon arrival, around 10am which was spectacular. Very cute room with window overlooking the street so it was fun to people watch. Great bathroom with excellent water pressure, comfortable bed. The only real complaint is this. We both tried our hardest with the spanish language, even though we're both terrible. But they say people will be happier and kinder if you at least give it a try. You have to tell them your room # to get the key when you come and go(they hold it at the front desk for you when you go out) and I wasnt sure of how to say sixteen, so instead I just did all the numbers, like saying 3-1-6 instead of three sixteen. I also asked for an extra pillow. As we were walking away we heard an older gentleman staff member say "muy american", in a derogatory way. Don't get me wrong, my spanish is pitiful. But it was really discouraging and made me feel terrible. I don't know if asking for an extra pillow is 'very american' or just being really bad at their language. So, THAT is my only complaint. Some of the younger staff members are very helpful with a smile on their face, and even helped me out in finding a power converter when mine broke.

We were very satisfied with our room with a terrace overlooking the square Sol. The only noice came from workers on the square, unfortunately also during the night. The hotel lies close to everything, you can reach most sights by walking, otherwise busses and metro are also easy to catch.

The hotel is located in a very busy area with lots of things to do all around. The metro station is right outside the hotel door, shopping mall just around the corner and fast food places right next door. The actual hotel room itself is quite small but clean and be aware that the "Do not disturb" signs don't work because house keeping just walked in without knocking while we were in the room. The down side of my stay was that the road was closed to the hotel so the cab driver made us walk about 300m to the hotel door, then when we got to the hotel to check in the reception had no record of my reservation, luckily they had availabilites.

The best attribute to this hotel is its location. It is right in the middle of the most beautiful sites in Madrid. We walked to the Royal Palace and several well known plazas in less than 10 minutes. There are multiple dining places close by, a pharmacy right next to it, even a theater where we attended a very nice show. And for me, desperate for some American type foods, we had Kentucky, Macdonalds and Burger King just outside. And to do some people watching, and Madrid rates very high for that, it was an excellent spot. Security was outstanding. the Metro stop is just in front. We took the Metro without difficulty from the Barajas Airport and back for 2 euros each way. Definately this hotel is a 10!

Travelling as a couple. We arrived early in the morning in Madrid off the overnight train and they gave us a room straight away which was great. The room was very large - walk in wardrobe! and had huge balcony ovelooking side road of Sol so nice for a drink later on. Location really good as just off Sol and the shops, 5 min walk to Plaza Major and 10 - 15 mins to Palace. We did not have breakfast in hotel so cannot comment on this - we went to the Museum of Ham (Museo de Jamon) (honestly!) which is a actually a cafe where you can can a great breakfast (fresh orange small ham bocadillos, coffee etc) for a couple of euros - it is just right out of the hotel.

This hotel was a great find in Madrid. The location couldn’t be more perfect; right in the Puerta del Sol, so all the major sights are within walking distance. There are also many restaurants, tapas bars and great places for shopping right at its doorstep. It certainly is an ideal spot for visiting Madrid. Arrived monday evening. booked double room but two single beds. friend on his own did get one large bed arrived back at 2.00am. no running water in room 6.30am. woken up by drilling outside our room. floor being dug up.no running water at 8.00am told water back on in one hour. story changed rest of morning. water not on by midday. corridor outside our room resembles bomb site. am given bottles of mineral water . i ask for kettle to heat up water.am told there is no kettle. am provided with jug of lukewarm water. hotel manager only after being repeatedly asked agrees 1st night free.this does not make up for loss of sleep. water back on that evening but for remainder of stay we never have even warm water. corridor remained bomb site. no further compensation offered even charging 20 euro for breakfast for 2. thought further discount appropriate. room safe. refused to use as had to pay 1 euro every time opened.ridiculous. hotel made fawlty towers look like 7 star hotel in comparison. staff esp manager pleasant enough but service was appalling. dont suppose you will publish this. every word is the truth.

The hotel was extremely noisy during the night - poor soundproofing between rooms and corridors as well as a new metro station being constructed next door during the night! Also having someone let themselves into your room at 3.00am with a key which also fitted a room on the next floor does not make for a restful stay! Plus Madrid is full of thieves and pickpockets as my missing handbag, camera, money and phone will testify.

Great location, construction outside our window was loud, as were teenage guests on our first night but otherwise I would highly recommend this property. Desk attendants were polite and English speaking young man was very helpful with directions and scheduling for airport transportation. Hotel is so centrally located we never took a cab or the Metro to any of the sights, walking distance to the Palace and the Prada. We even returned for an unscheduled extra night and they were very accommodating. Can't comment on the breakfast we never tried it because there were too many other options nearby. Don't miss the Chocolateria just a few blocks away-it is a treat !Beware of restraunt a few doors down from hotel by the name of Asador Real, they saw us coming,we went in for tapas and they sold us a $40 plate of ham and cheese. Remember the pictures don't have the price or show true portions, Ask the price before ordering.

Though the hotel is fine and the location is great, I cannot give an enthusiastic recommendation. My room was very dark and the overall look and feel of the hotel was on the shabby side; and I know there are better bargains in Madrid (I also stayed at Ateneo during my last stay). Aside from being in the thick of downtown, you don't get a lot of bang for your buck here.

The central location of the Moderno is fine and the price is modest. The staff is not particularly friendly and in fact is quite content to ignore you in favor of doing their paperwork in the evening, but they are not exactly rude either. The hotel is clean, the breakfast is generous and again, price is pretty good. The single room I had was tiny. Be aware that central Madrid is extremely noisy at night so if you are a light sleeper bring you earplugs.

This hotel has a perfect location in central Madrid, close to Plaza Mayor, art museums, shopping areas, etc. The underground station is just outside the door. The hotel is located at a busy street but with windows closed you hardly hear the traffic. The rooms vary in size, we stayed in this hotel twice during our trip to Spain and got two different rooms with rather different standards. The first one was very good, but the second one was very small for being a twin room. The breakfast is not that exiting but if you are in a hurry, it's ok. Overall, this is a good hotel and we wouldn't mind staying here again.

I chose to stay at Hotel Moderno from reading the multitude of positive reviews on this website, and a good choice it was. It totally lived up to my expectations; it was slap bang in the centre of Madrid, accessible from the airport, and a very decent hotel. The room was clean and spacious with a lovely modern marble bathroom equipped with big fluffy white towels. It was a fairly noisy area, but it seems this is general to the city, and the double glazed windows shut out most of the din. The breakfast was classically continental and very tasty, and the breakfast room was light and airy. The staff were very polite and helpful and let us pop our bags in their secure room on the day we checked out, as our flight was not until late in the evening. Check out is at 1pm, very reasonable. All in all, I totally recommend Hotel Moderno, and would stay there again.

This was our first trip to Madrid and I researched the area as best I could prior to reserving the Moderno. I was not disappointed at all. The room was nicer than I expected, the bath, the service, the staff, the location all fantastic. Almost everything is within walking distance and the things that aren't are easily reached by the subway. We loved our 10 days in Madrid and I think it was partly because of this wwonderful hotel.

This place is in the very center of Madrid. It's ideal if you have a couple of days: spending a day walking one can visit all the main sites on foot (from the palacio real to the prado). The surrounding area is not the most beautiful in town but it's busy and entertaining. The room was fabulous. We really enjoyed our two days there.

It was difficult to communicate with the people at the reception in English. Had some problems with the invoice issued for our stay - it was issued with higher prices than these quoted in the reservation. After questioning the invoice it has been corrected with a discount. The entrance of the hotel was under construction and it was not very convenient/clean to get in the hotel. The perfect location has compensated some of the above defficiences.

This hotel is in the middle of the central heart off the city. You can come everywhere by walking. We found it very good. The beds (twinroom) were good and the pillows also. Also the shower and bath were very good. In the morning there is a luxe breakfast. For euro 7.50. Everything you want. Yes, we found it great.

I could not think any hotel just in the very middle of Madrid that can be reached from everywhere and everytime 24/24. I hope the prices are at least similar on season. Thanks for proposing it.

My husband and I would highly recommend it. It was at a great location and even though I was noisy in the mornings. The accommodations at Moderno was comparable to the stay in four star hotel in Paris. We truly enjoy our stay and would book it again at the same hotel. The older gentlemen at reception desk does not speak much english but will try to assist with the moderate spanish that we speak and understand. Evening and weekend shift there is younger gentlemen that can speak English fluently and will be able to assist if you can speak Spanish.
