This is a great hotel - an old building which has retained its character but is really good to stay in - The rooms are built around a courtyard which was once open to the elements and now it is closed in by a glass ceiling - but manages to retain all its charm- The breakfast room and bar are located in this area now. The decor is good - it is very clean- the hotel is quite yet very central- breakfast is very good choice - buffet and you can also have a hot cooked breakfast.Right next door is Convent of Las Descalzas Reales- The Palace is 5 minutes walk - Prado is about 20 minutes walk - Wold stay here again

Wonderful hotel! It was a bit of a challenge to find the hotel since its in a pedestrian only area and the taxi dropped us off a bit of a walk away. But it's located in a big enough plaza that we just asked a local and found it pretty easily after that. A lot of close landmarks (Royal Palace is extremely close!), and a few nearby Metro stops were definitely a big plus. We didn't realize breakfast was included in our price, and the staff was happy to remove the charge from our bill when we checked out. The food at the bar was amazing, and we even went back for seconds, despite it being 11pm. Fantastic hotel, great staff, and great city!

Excellent location, good hotel, a bit pricy with room rates 120+ € / night w/o breakfast. Room was interior heading to the hotel lounge. No views from window, but very very quiet. Hotel services were quite limited, but then again, wasn't looking for anything else than a pool/sauna. The breakfast was very good. All types of diverse options available.

Overall the hotel is well located close to all you would want to see in Madrid. The rooms were starting to look like they needed updating and our room was very dark. I was unfortunate enough to have my wallet stolen in madrid and the staff were very helpful with informing the police and appeared genuinely upset that I had been robbed. For a couple of nights the hotel is good, public areas are small for the size of the hotel and rating it as four star is probably on the generous side, but it is at the cheap end of four star hotels. If you are a couple or single person on holiday in Madrid, want a clean room close to the sights without needing to use the metro this is a great place. Not sure I would recommend to those with children as there is limited space for them.

We are experienced international travellers (both business and pleasure)from USA. This hotel is a gem. Its location is perfect. It is in the center of all that matter, yet on a quiet plaza, that can be loud late at night, but you cannot hear it in the room (you can hear it in the bathroom). We were there twice and had two different rooms. The second was on the top floor, huge with a small bath. Preferred the one on the 4th floor. Within ten minute walk you will find over 500 restaruants, good ones, some exellent. It is located between the Plaza Mayor and the Gran Via, the retaurant and commercial centers of the city. All places except for the airport and the Barnabeau can be reached by taxi for less than 7 euros (bus and metro are within minutes). Madrid is a beautiful and vibrant city. Here you are at the center, little out of the museum circle, but we walked home from the Prado one day, and it was quite pleasant, even on a hot day. This hotel has an almost invisible staff, which is always there to assist you if you need help. One night, coming home late from a usual Spanish dinner (after 1:00 am) I asked for a drink at the desk, the bar was closed. I got a drink in less than 2 minutes at the bar. For those who can appreciate how good or bad a hotel can be, here the biggest single problem was that the elevator is a little too slow. I would go back any day.

Well, is it true we were able to catch a special offer on the room (double @100 Euro/night), but Palacio San Martin is the hotel to stay in Madrid. With its central location, yet very quiet, in the peatonal Plaza San Martin, walking distance from everything you want to visit and transportation you'll need, "el Palacio" offers even an old fashion European charm. Next time, I'd love to catch a monthly special offer (?!) to really enjoy Madrid an "el Palacio San Martin". Very important note on trasportation: from Barajas Airport line 8 on the Metro, just 1 change (Nuevo Ministerios, terminal line 8, same Station), take any C Train (Cercania) going southbound and jump off at Sol. Total cost 3.30 Euro, and 40' (min) travelling time. It's fantastic!

We were very happy with the Palacio San Martin. The rooms were spacious compared to other European hotels we have stayed in. Our room was super quiet, even though our window looked out to a square that was very busy and noisy in the evening. The hotel has put in a double wall structure that blocks out all the late night noise. Location was excellent and it was very near the old town, Plaza Mayor and the Gran Via. Print a detail map of the location to give to the taxi driver. It's a bit difficult for them to find. One note - this is a beautifully renovated old hotel and we loved it, BUT if you like a more contemporary decor, this might not be the right hotel for you.

Lovely hotel. Good combination of price, quality, luxury and central location. Good beds, nice bathroom and appointments, flat screen TV and writing desk. Requires 3 transfers on the Metro from the airport and then a two block walk from the Metro station, but once done, the stay was excellent. The Plaza the hotel is located on is perfectly fine, quiet at night. The surrounding area is busy, but room was absolutely quiet. Room is Air conditioned, a major plus, and it worked very well. Staff did not go out of their way to make themselves helpful, but reacted when a request was made. They did not, for example, help us at the front entrance by holding the door, despite being burdened with our baggage. We did not have breakfast at the hotel, price was too high. Got coffee one morning (delicious!) and they provided a croissant gratis, which was most appreciated. I would recommend staying here. Realize, though, there are a great many hotels in Madrid; a thorough search could likely provide a better value or location, as your needs or interests might warrant.

Very good location for shopping/sightseeing. Staff are not alert to customer requirements. Bedrooms/bathrooms on fifth floor are spacious, but with smallish double beds. Rooms on other floors are very pokey. Too much furniture in very small rooms. Bathroom also very small. Rooms overlooking the square are very scenic, but a loud church bell starts at 07:30 every morning. We stayed 6 nights. Ate breakfast in only one morning. Very expensive in a depressing room.

Only down side was the flutist outside our balcony playing green sleeves ( totally out of tune )over and over again, it must have been the only tune he knew how to play, now whenever we hear this tune it will bring pleasant memories of Madrid to mind. We loved this hotel. Even though it is in the old part of Madrid, since it is located on a quiet small plaza, it was a peaceful place to come back to. Its location was great. It seemed as if it were at a short walking distance from the best of old Madrid. We used this hotel as a base as our connecting flights to Rome were through Madrid. We stayed in 3 different rooms over the course of 3 weeks. Each room was very spacious with elegant and clean decor. Bathrooms were done in marble and were very clean. The staff was exceptionally helpful and kind. We found the 4 star rating to be a bit high, but we did find this to be a very comfortable hotel at a good price in the center of Madrid. Every time we came through the door we felt welcomed. Overall, this is a great find and we would return

Nice hotel and very good location. However, the first room that we were given smelled like smoking area in the airport. Additionally, the room window opened into the inner courtyard, which is used for parties (especially on Friday and Saturday nights). We refused to take the room, and after a little arguments with the receptionist (they offered to spray some smoke nutralizing spray in the room), they gave us another room, which was two times bigger, had balcony, and cigarette odor free. Receptionists were helpful, but not eager to help. I would stay in this hotel again, if I am guaranteed the same room that we stayed this time.

The hotel is very nice and is ideally located for tourists and visitors alike, being only two minutes walk from Sol. Unfortunately on our visit we were allocated rooms with only internal views to the lounge area, where ideally we would have preferred an outside view to the city. As with all major cities, visitors should be careful with belongings especially purses and wallets as a couple of guests at the hotel were pick pocketed in the plaza, directly in front. We had a comfortable stay in Madrid and would recommend this hotel to anyone visiting the city.

We were very pleased with our stay at the Palacio San Martin. Excellent location and yet very quiet. We had only two small quibbles: 1. Our attempt to make reservations for entertainment (ie flamenco show) were jeopardized when the concierge confirmed our reservation but the restaurant claimed no knowledge of it. We got in anyway but not without some anxious moments. 2. The morning buffet was excellent but rather pricey (at least by Canadian standards). We would have preferred a choice of offerings at different prices. We only wanted coffee and a croissent (or equivalent) but this cost 15 Euros, the same price for having the whole array of meats, cheeses, eggs, fruits, breads, etc. -all very nice, and, no doubt, good value if you loaded up on everything but too expensive if you only wanted something lighter.

Cetralissimo, ma per un quattro stelle sicenramente ci aspettavamo di più. Porta asciugamano rotto in bagno, mai aggiustato.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The location was within easy walking distances of major attractions like the Prado and the Thyssen. As our cab driver told us in a clear Castellian accent, "Eeet ees thentro, thentro, thentro."

The room was ok, the bed were huge (2m/1,20 m both), but as the window openend to the inside hall of the hotel, there was no daylight and no view. Disapointing when you compare to the category and the price of the hotel ! and there were many other rooms like that !

Very good central location. Friendly staff, very spacious room. Would have been better if breakfast had been included in the price.

In this excellent picture, I had only two little troubles: too light in the room on the early morning and the (fantastic!) but really too much expensive breakfast.

This is one of the nicest hotels I have ever stayed in for the price. Our previous hotel in Madrid had been more expensive and no where near the excellent quality. It was a delightful surprise and the staff were very helpful.

The San Martin Palace is a very charming hotel close to downtown Madrid in the building previously used as the American Embassy in Spain. The services are good and the rooms confortable. Considering the average prices for Madrid hotels, I find it highly recomended.

Everything was excellent except that they didn't disnguish between smoking and non-smoking rooms. Our first room was a wonderful SW corner room overlooking the square and it had great sound proofing. But the odor of tobacco was too strong and we had to get another room. The staff found a fine room on the same floor that didn't smell but I got the sense that we were lucky. THe hotel is a short stroll to the Plaza Mayor, Palacio Real and the Plaza del Sol (from which most Madrid addresses rise). The hotel also has a working, glass and wrought iron elevator from early 19000's - great fun to ride. The staff were young and inexperienced but quite competent.

Fantastic price/quality ratio for a very nice and confortable hotel located in the very hearth of the city. There are really very few other hotels so conveniently located to reach almost any attraction in Madrid on a walking distance.

Every thing was good except that in your web site was shown (picture and resume) the room as a very big room but it wasn't. Probably for the special price (week end pack), but it wasn't written. The breakfast wasn't good and it was too expensive.

The hotel itself was quite nice. The room was very adequate. I was disappointed that only one desk person spoke english and she was not there all of the time. I was actually shocked when we got out of the taxi to find about twenty homeless people sleeping directly in front of the hotel. We literally had to walk over them in order to get to the front door.

The hotel facilites were excellent especially the shower that also had an inbuilt 'steamroom / sauna' function which was so relaxing at the end of the day. The breakfast was not included in the price of the room however we had it each day as it was good value for money and the range of food and quality was exceptional. The hotel is modern and comfortable. Only downside would be that reception staff were not that friendly but that didn't stop us from having a great visit or from highly recommending it as a place to stay if you go to Madrid.

Inconspicuously tucked away, this is Madrid's best kept secret. One cannot possibly get more bang for the buck. The hotel is charming and elegant, with tastefully appointed rooms. We shall return to this hotel repeatedly.

A modern refurb of an old building the hotel is built around an airy and spacious atrium. It's good to be right in the heart of the city and get a relatively peaceful location too. At normal prices the hotel is reasonable, but at the discount obtained (105 euros + tax per night) it was excellent value. Staff were efficient friendly and helpful.
