Great location. Historic building but modern design and ammenities in rooms. I really liked my room very much. Very clean and well maintained. Very courteous and helpful staff. I would stay here again. Note, there is no elevator so some people might need help carrying their luggage upstairs. Rooms facing street have great light and air but at times can be a bit noisy if the windows are open (this is a city after all). Rooms facing the inner court are more quiet but darker.

Lyon is a most beautiful city, and Hotel Saint Paul is located right in the middle of everything you could possibly wish for in the Old Town. When we arrived at the hotel we were very pleasantly greeted by Verner who provided a local map and highlighted his recommended restaurants. Our room was on the third floor (58 steps) and at first we were disappointed with the size of the room. We were not expecting a palace but we were surprised by our initial impression. Once we organised ourselves and started to recover from jet lag (over 30 hours traveling from Oz) we realised the room was ok, just small and a bit daggy, probably what one would expect for a two star hotel. The bathroom was modern and very clean. The double bed was firm yet comfortable. We had a small desk and small robe, both of which were handy. Our room was cleaned and made up each day. On two of our four days at the hotel we had breakfast in the hotel dining room, which was fresh and tasty and offered with friendly service. Our room window opened into an internal courtyard which was generally ok except when some drunk and noisy people arrived in the early hours of the morning. It was quite warm weather and there was very little fresh air coming through the internal window and the ventilation wasn't very good, even though the ceiling fan didn't stop. The only problem we had was that the promised free wifi didn't happen (we took our laptop). It worked ok on the first day and then suddenly we couldn't get access again. They said there was a problem with their isp. However, when pressed they were somehow able to switch it on for us for for 15 minutes, once in the four days. This caused us significant disadvantage and we couldn't figure how they were still able to run their business with internet yet we were unable to access it. Overall, we would recommend Hotel Saint Paul to anyone happy to stay in basic budget accommodation in a beautiful part of Lyon. Apart from the lack of wif

The location was perfect location for my interests. the room was spacious and very clean. Lucky to be on the first floor, it must be difficult to go to the higher floors without a lift. The summer solstace music activities was noisy, but one day a year is okay. I would stay here again when visiting Lyons.

Excellent situation in the Old Lyon, and a decent price for that. The rooms are normal for 2*, the public areas could be refreshed. Free Wifi in the rooms. Good and cheap breakfast. The employees are particularly kind and helpful.

Exceptionally helpful and welcoming, good advice on restaurants and sights, great location. The rooms were exactly as pictured, well heated, clean, comfortable and a bit cosy, as you'd expect in such an ancient building. There's no lift, and the staircase is circular, so if you get nauseous easily don't take a 4th floor room as we did - but the outlook is lovely.

Perfect location and super-clean which are my two priorities when choosing hotels. Furthermore I liked the overall atmosphere of the hotel: relaxed and easy-going but still with a 'hotel feel' as opposed to hostels. In the bathroom was provided soaps and a hair dryer which is handy when not wanting to bring much luggage for a short stay. Also we could leave our back in the reception area. If having a lot of luggage or difficulties with stairs it might be best to ask for one of the lower rooms. There is a lot of stairs in old buildings.

We only stayed here in transit overnight in the cheapest room. The room was clean but not flash. We found the evening staff ok, the morning staff, a lovely woman, was much more helpful and breakfast was great! If you have a car this not a good place to stay as it has no parking. There is a reasonably cheap car park close by called Saint Jean that the night staff did not point out to us when we arrived and suggested we drive a lot further than we needed to.

The perfect location for a short stay. Owners are delightful and very helpful. Getting there from Lyon Part Dieu railway station via public transport was so easy. It is located in an unusual, old building typical of Vieux Lyon and this means that some rooms are within the building with windows opening into a light well/ancient staircase which doesn't allow a lot of light in. It is better than it sounds but if you like plenty of daylight ask for a room overlooking the street. We very much enjoyed staying there.

Great location, great service (really helpful staff), poor instalations. The room is not exactly small, is like totaly out of shape, is long and narrow, u could easily mistake it for some kind of train wagon. You can only leave your bed by one side. No air conditioning, and really busy street make it everything but impossible to sleep at reasonable times during summer time. If u can forfeit these traits, then this hotel is for you.

As to be expected from the price it is basic and a little shabby but extremely clean. We liked the atmosphere of the old building and little courtyards (we had a second one at the back outside our bedroom window)though we could have done with brighter lights to read by. We went to both the restaurants recommended by reception and they were very good in different ways.

I chose this hotel based on good reviews and location. When we got there, I was happy with the location, but the hotel was scary. Our room was small, dark and in need of major renovation. The windows faced the inside court and if people went downstairs to smoke and/or talk, we heard them and smelled their cigarettes in our room. We heard steps and voices on the staircase, which woke us up during the night and in the morning. The windows in our room didn’t close, good thing it was warm outside. We left our towels on the floor in morning and the cleaning lady instead of giving us new towels put back the same, dirty towels. The receptionist downstairs was very helpful and showed us all the places we should visit in Lyon. Overall, I would not recommend this hotel, at least not the room we stayed in.

I spotted the hotel on a previous visit to Lyon and then checked it out on the web. It lived up to expectations. We shall certainly try and stay there again. It is however a simple hotel and better suited to short stays (1 or 2 nights). I would not want to try and do any work in the room. The large fan suggested that the room might be rather hot in the summer. On a cold day in March, it was fine!

On ne pourrait souhaiter meilleur emplacement pour cet hotel. Le personnel était extrêmement sympathique et de bon conseil. Le seul bémol: le lit était d'un confort très relatif. Tout de même, le rapport qualité/prix était excellent.

The staff was very welcoming and helpful. Reception and eating areas look chic and like the photos. However the stairwell/rooms are a dump. Perhaps we arrived right after a rowdy group had left but there were stains on the carpet everywhere and everything in the room was falling apart (lights, toilet seat, etc). Our room did not look charming like the photo-- it looked more like a hostel room and it was on the 5th floor (when we arrived it appeared they were still cleaning the many open rooms on the lower floors). Now, it is possible they gave us a crappy rundown room because we were traveling with a dog and I guess that's fair. I guess if you're looking for ambience, it might be worth asking for a nicely decorated room. For 75 euro I would have like a little more charm. I would say do not stay here if you are looking for a romantic couple's getaway. The location is somewhat touristy but very close to everything. If you're a foodie, you'd do well to get away from this area for a nice dinner (too many tourist menus with mediocre food). Be warned that parking is pretty expensive (20 euros per day). Overall we enjoyed Lyon but we're accustomed to getting a better room for the money in France.

My husband, sister, brother-in-law and I stayed in one quadruple room for 3 nights. It is as most folks have reported, old and neglected. Very much in need of remodel. And do take the carpet off the walls first! The staff was so wonderful, you can help but wish them well and hope that room by room, they will get the remodel done. I haven't read where anyone actually has stayed in a newly done room. The location was awesome....just awesome and it was quiet, other than the celebrations during the World Cup, of course! And what fun that was, to learn about the rules of the game and join in the cheering.

We actually put the wrong dates into Venere when we booked several weeks prior to travelling (we did several hotels at once and simply mixed the days up for Lyon), which caused my credit card to be charged for the missed night (as we arrived two days after our booking was due). However the staff were very helpful and understanding, and able to assist us and provide a room despite technically missing our booking. Having said that, the room was very basic, no door on bathroom, thin walls and the lamp did not work. We were offered a room on the top floor which was up a steep spiral staircase (not fun with luggage) as it had a view, which proved to be of the roof of an adjacent building. Generally the facilities were simply ordinary, although this was compensated for by the level of friendliness and assistance provided by the staff, who were great. The hotel is also handy to alot of the sights of Vieux-Lyon (the older part of town), transport, restaurants, and the river Saone (beautiful at sunset).

Easy to find and extremely friendly and helpful hosts (with great restaurant recommendations). More spacious than I dreamed a two star hotel could be! The only negative was the cost of parking the car overnight anywhere near the hotel. (I think it was €20 per 24 hours) If you're there more than a day you might want to consider options further out of town. We had a great time in Lyon thanks to this place!

As we had ordered a new room overlooking the courtyard, we were surprised to find a room apparently last renovated during the 60s, right above the street (noisy at night). We chose the hotel partly because we thought it was heritage, the front of the hotel has been 'modernised' and while it is very old inside the front is disappointing. Our room was small with a tiny window onto a light well, This really did not matter but was initially disappointing. Security in the area is tight and stops the hotel from being as welcoming as it might otherwise be.

My wife and I stayed here with our two teenage sons (14 and 17) for a total of five days in August 2004. We liked it and would probably stay here again. Very low price, good value, great location. Pluses  Location: At the northern tip of “Old Lyon”, it is close to the rest of Old Lyon as well as to the Parking St. Jean (park as far north as you can) and the Presqu’ile, Place des terraux, Opera, Beaux Arts Museum, restaurant street Rue Mercière and parts further South to place Bellecour  Comfort: While the quad room we stayed in was a bit small, it was nicely configured with two spacious double beds and lots of space for our bags, clothes, books etc.  TV: reception was good  Building: Beautiful old Renaissance building w spiral staircase  Price: Extremely reasonable  Staff: Friendly and helpful (I spoke French; don’t know about their English) Minuses  Noise: The street (Rue Lainerie) and nearly all of Old Lyon is chock full of restaurants that (in August at least) stay open quite late, and has many revelers in various states of inebriation, all of whom appear to be shouting at each other, especially between 1:00 and 3:30 am. The garbage truck comes at 6:25 am. Strategies include keeping the window shut or using earplugs (eg Ohropax)  Bath: Is built into the room with partition (not floor-to-ceiling) walls; we did not have a problem but thought you should know  Towels: While we booked the room for four people we had to ask (twice) for 4 bath towels

The price for this accomodation was excellent HOWEVER, were staying with my in-laws in one room with two beds. The shower and toilet are in the middle of the room with a thin partition around the toilet and frosted glass on the shower (it leaked). The place was not extremely clean, but not horrible either. If you need a cheap place to stay and you are not fussy, this will work well for you.

Only double rooms are offered, but the price is low enough to make it affordable as a single. Decor and funishings were new. Bed was large, firm, and comfortable, but the room was a bit small for it. The "closet" was a canvas shelf unit. The shower en suite was a definite plus It was large, and the showerhead worked well - however the shower floor was slippery and I suffered a cut that lasted the next two weeks. The only MAJOR complaint was that several LOUD pigeons live in the courtyard - you MUST bring earplugs if you want to sleep.

Staff were very relaxed and welcoming; position of St Paul is outstanding; the property is in an ancient building. The hotel needs a major overhaul. The rooms are large, but look like they haven't been seen a coat of paint since the seventies. The bed was comfortable and the location was excellent, in the heart of Old Lyon so if you aren't planning on doing much other than sleep at the hotel, it is a strong value. Note: If you are a single woman, you might not feel the safest at night since you don't enter and exit through the lobby but rather a separate entrance.

For a two star hotel in a large French city, Hotel St Paul is good value. It is well located in terms of the Lyon shopping and business district - both the Navette and the regular bus service are very close, which allows visitors to access the excellent Lyon public transport network. The staff (all four, at different times during our three day stay)were all friendly, welcoming and helpful. They were prepared to bridge the language difference, which was very helpful to us. Hotel St Paul is a more than adequate budget hotel in the heart of Vieux Lyon. We felt safe and welcome there.

The overall standard of accomodation at the hotel St Paul was adequate considering the price that i paid. What was most dissapointing though was turning up to the hotel on the 18th of June (the 1st day that i had booked) to find that they had absolutly no record of my reservation. As you can imagine this prediciment was most distressing as we were expecting to be able to check in and then go to the France v Colombia Football match which we had tickets for. After a heated discussion with the night manager in which he denied all knowledge of our reservation, he rang a more expensive hotel a few blocks away and gained us a room there instead at additional expense to ourselves. All this trouble meant that we missed the afore mentioned football game to which we were unable to gain a refund for. When arriving at the hotel St Paul the following morning to speak with the manager, he had somehow managed to find our reservation and offered to roll over our reservation to the following day. He did not however offer us any form of compensation for our having to spend a night in a more expensive hotel, or for that matter an apology. Or offer to compensate us for the missed football match that his and his staff's incompentance led to. I am unsure as to whether the apparent fault in the hotel St Paul not having our reservation is with the hotel or with Venere, but quite frankly i don't consider this to be acceptable behaviour, and i expect some kind of satisfaction in this matter from the guilty party. Yours Sincerely Dallas Poultney
