Hotel Rex - Lucca

An excellent hotel situated right by the station, ideal if ,like us, you wish to get out and about around tuscany as well as see the lovely city of Lucca. Our room was large and very comfortable, overlooking the city walls and tree lined walkway. We were made very welcome by the owners and enjoyed the generous breakfast very much. Have no hesitation in recommending this hotel to families and couples.

An excellent hotel in a central position and very good staff

Stayed 4 nights and had problems with the water most days. Could not shower as the water was off. We kept getting same response that they were working in the area on the water. The hotel lobby seemed dreary and dark. The hotel could use a freshening up. A little tired. We had a 3 star hotel in Rome that outrated this one. Little disappointing. But great location outside the wall of Lucca.

The location was very convenient, since we arrived by train. Would have liked to have another computer available in the lobby. One of the receptionists was exceptionally helpful when Hertz didn't have a car for us. She contacted Avis, got us a car, and even drove us to Avis to avoid a cab fee!

We came to enjoy ourselves. Beautiful City and very easy to go in the centre of Lucca by Hotel Rex. Very good the car park out of the Hotel.

We were travelling the last week of November so it was pretty quiet. Location can't be beat - right next to the train and outside the walls of Lucca. Breakfast was great - very generous.

Very nice staff, remember to leave your key at the front desk because they lock the door at night, spacious room with kettle, very near to the train station but very quiet at night.

Definitely appreciated the spaciousness of the rooms -- nice change from what is typical in Europe. Convenient location to the train station and just outside the walls of the historic city. We walked to the bus station and were able to day trip to Pisa. Didn't do much exploring of the neighborhood around the hotel because our time was spent inside the historic city. Safe, quiet, and a pleasant city. Would stay in the hotel again. Hotel staff very helpful and pleasant. Breakfast is pretty basic -- no complaints, no rave reviews.

Very friendly staff, made us feel welcome. The location was very convenient both to the train station as well as the entrance to the old city.

Being near the station is convenient. The breakfast was wonderful, varied and abundant. Everything was fine, but we were there on a night that Italy won a big soccer tournament, so I'm sure it was noisy everywhere in Italy. But we really liked the hotel and its staff, and would return again gladly. They let you use a computer for free in the lobby and the place has a family feel to it.

Hotel Rex is next to the train station and next to the wall of Lucca. Very easy to enter Lucca from the hotel. The hotel is old but with character. Breakfast was included and was very good. The only bad part was that you could hear the traffic from you room. Other than that, this is a very good hotel and the location is excellent.

We really enjoyed our stay at the Hotel Rex. The staff were very welcoming and the location was perfect for us as we were travelling by train and it was just a short walk into the town centre.

This hotel is very quiet even though it is right by the train station. The area is nice and safe. The walled city of Lucca is 5 minute walk away. Rent bikes and ride around the city wall. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The breakfast was excellent.

All of the staff were so welcoming, efficient, informative, kind and friendly and made sure that our stay was top quality. The hotel is situated conveniently to the city and station, and the room was well equipped, spacious and clean. Breakfast was fresh and full of variety. Highly recommended.

The room was alright but a little dark

This hotel is very conveniently located just outside the city walls, and we were able to leave our car out front. The room was nice, and the bathroom was fairly modern. The beds were a little hard. Our overall impression was good. Lucca is a lovely city, and we will definitely return.

Ideal location for those arriving by train and yet close to city walls and all the delights therein

Shower was very snall - tight, byt adequate to shower in. A larger shower stall would have been very nice. Otherwise the accomodations were comparable to others we've stayed at.

Close proximity to the railway station and to the walled section of Lucca. Very good quality hotel for an overnight stay,or longer if neccessary.

Could not have been more convenient, right outside Lucca city walls, one block from rail station - but no noise!. Parked car right in front for three days and walked, took train. Very clean, comfortable and quiet room. Good restaurant recommendation nearby on a rainy night - no tourists! Love Lucca!

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Hotel Rex. The room was an interconnecting double, which we hadn't expected, but we didn't have to pay extra. The hotel is very well situated near the station, but no noise of trains.

Bathroom was not clean. Single room was tiny so that wardrobe door when open jammed on bed. Guests in next door bedroom sounded like they were in same room! BUT ... Staff very friendly. Clean sheets and towels, and bed made every day. FANTASTIC VARIETY AND QUANTITY OF BREAKFAST and service at breakfast very good too. Excellent safe location, next to train station and a stone throw from walls of Lucca.

The staff were very friendly and the location was excellent for the station. However maintenance appeared non-existent. Toilets did not work, shower doors fell off and the room safe had no batteries and did not work. This did not stop us enjoying our stay, other rooms were found and staff made us feel at home. The breakfast was excellent.

This is a very well managed, clean, friendly hotel across from the station and very close to the centre of the old town. The breakfast is excellent and the staff is friendly and highly intelligent. Very good value. I would be delighted to return.

2 ladies in their fifties, one been to Lucca several times, one never. Hotel perfectly placed for train travel, our means of touring Tuscany. Staff helpful and friendly. Hotel excellent value. Would stay there again without hesitation.

We had a double and quad room and they were a good size, clean and perfectly suited to our needs. We have stayed at the Rex before and like its closeness to the train station and short walk to the centre of Lucca. This time we even had a discount applied to the quoted price because it was a little out of season. We would have no hesitation staying at the Rex again.

Rooms were dull and there was a general tired feel about all the areas in the hotel(Decor was from an episode of Miami Vice). The staff were very friendly and helpful,making you feel very welcome. The location was great for the train station but a good 10 minutes from the center or anything!

A very friendly hotel very conveniently situated right next to the railway station and just outside the city walls. We loved Lucca with its amazing architecture and great variety of restaurants.

Really convenient, just outside train station, though you need to go into the town to get a good meal. Very high room ceiling = cool.

The elderly owner, who is very sweet and warm, is treated with love and respect by his staff. His presence makes one feel like you are entering a place that is cared about. He personally showed us to our room and saw to it that we were settled in. Breakfast was good too.

I recomend this hotel in particular if using the railway either to visit Lucca or as a base to explore further afield. Also well situated for the town itself (and Lucca is a gem of a small Tuscan city).

Great location, convenient to train station (just across the square), and an easy walk in to Lucca. The hotel also seems to operate some sort of luggage storage facility for travelers who are just spending the day in Lucca. Room with bath reasonable size, ours was in the back and quiet until garbage collection time (5 AM). Staff courteous and helpful. Internet (wireless) didn't work inside the room, but OK in the hall and lobby.

Very convenient location when you travel by train.

We were overjoyed to find the hotel in the same square as the railway station: so convenient! Not far to walk to the old city but more convenient than having to drag a suitcase through the cobbled streets. Breakfast was fit for a king; windows are double glazed so no problem with noise. We used the hotel as a base & went to Cinque Terre for a day. Easy to commute from here to other towns & Florence: don't bother to drag luggage. The family running the hotel were very friendly: we even received a small gift when we checked out. Outstanding hotel!

Lucca captured my heart, and i am so thankful that at the end of each day i could come back to a comfortable room, with a hot shower, and the facility to make a cup of tea. The service was wonderful.Our italian was not quite up to standard, but our host made sure we were happy, and was interested and curious about our life in our own country, and we had several pleasant conversations about our different ways of life. the delightful young ladies on reception in the morning started our day off with a smile. breakfast was delicious and plentiful. we were very happy with our choice.

Hotel Rex met our needs for our one night stay. Very close to Lucca city centre. Service was polite and helpful. Room was small and hotel is located on a busy road.

Air conditioning didn't work in our room. Therefore had to leave window open, noisy outside, made getting to sleep difficult. Finally had to close the window to get quiet.

Good location very close to the railway station and to a pedestrian entrance to the historic centre of Lucca. My room was very quiet. Breakfast was fine.

Excellent location if arriving by train and just across the road from walled old town with easy access. Rooms nice size with coffee maker and mini bar plus nice bathroom amenities. One of the better Italian style breakfast buffets but like most places, little in the range of hot foods

The hotel has faded in the last 18 months since our last visit. The bed was not comfortable uneven mattress and the breakfasts were not great. The room we had had doodles on the walls! Fine if it is just for passing through but not for a long stay.

The description of the rooms says all have bath and mini-safes. Ours had neither - a big disappointment as the requirement of a bath was an essential!!

I was originally skeptical about booking a hotel over the internet. We were looking for a place to stay in Lucca and were unfamiliar with the area, so I decided to look at the Venere site. I read all the comments about Hotel Rex and decided to book a room, based on the mostly positive remarks. It turned out to be just great. Our initial impression was not good, since the young girl at the front desk when we arrived acted a little grumpy and gave us the idea that we did not have a reservation. Turned out she had a terrible cold and felt awful. We did, indeed, have a reservation and were taken to our room by an elderly man who showed us around and exclaimed about the fact that we had a reservation for one room but got two ajoining rooms for the same price as one. Our room looked out onto the front of the hotel and traffic was noisy but shutters and closed windows blocked out the noise. The location was perfect for us. We had a place to park our car - right in front of the hotel - and we could walk across the street and through an entrance in the wall around the old city. Breakfast was fine. We showed up at about 9:00 the first morning and thought it was a little sparse, but we got everything we needed. It might be better to get there earlier, as we did the next day, because the woman in charge went to the kitchen and replenished the food three times while we were there. Everyone who worked there was very friendly and wanted to be helpful. The only possible drawback for someone who does not speak Italian was that their English was not great. We tried to get directions to the airport in Pisa and the woman at the front desk tried very hard to help. My husband can speak some Italian, so he understood her, but I could not. We enjoyed our stay at Hotel Rex and would go again.

This was ideal for us since we were coming by train. It also was a pleasant and short walk into the walls of Lucca. The free internet was also great. I'd stay here again.

Pleasant hotel with helpful staff. Nothing outstanding but no problems at all.

The Hotel is right next to the train station. This makes it convenient but also somewhat noisy. Since Lucca is not a major destination the noise does not continue late at night. The staff is welcoming and very friendly. They know the area and are always willing to help in any way they can. I would not hesitate to recommend the Rex to friends.

Excellent stay. The room was large and comfortable, and the breakfast selection was impressive.

This hotel is very convenient for travellers arriving by train, it is just across the road from the station entrance. The room was very clean and comfortable, but if overlooking the square could be noisy from traffic. It was only a few minutes to walk to the centre of Lucca, and to stroll along the walls.

Middle-aged receptionist spoke excellent English and was very helpful although he couldn't find our booking for a while. The shower room was too small. The floor of the bedroom hadn't been swept properly. Window needed to be shut to avoid sleepless night from noisy traffic. Breafast was good.

It is not usual to recommend hotels near to railway stations but in the genteel, elegant Tuscan town of Lucca this is not the case. I cannot recommend this hotel highly enough. The rooms are spotless, the public areas though small are elegant and comfortable. The staff are friendly and more than ready to indulge guests fancy to speak (probably) bad Italian. I usually go to Lucca once a year but I intend to go in late autumn purely for the pleasure of staying in the Rex.

Both the biggest pro and con concern location: just next to the train station and St. Peters gate--easy to find but very nosy. Bring earplugs and you'll be OK. Room was very large and nice. Excellent service from the night receptionist. Was very helpful, spoke excellent English and gave us a great restaurant referral.

I liked the convenience of having a parking lot at the hotel, and being right accross the street from one of the entries into the walled city of Lucca. Room was quiet, a little small, and this is an issue of personal preference, but found the dark red walls in my room made the room seem even smaller.

The staff fwas great and the location was the most convenient that it could be. Walking distance was very short. Terrific

The hotel was very well maintained and the staff gave excellent suggestions for restaurants and sights to see in the area. This was one of our most relaxing stays in our 10 day trip to italy. I highly recommend this hotel.

This was one of our finest stays. The hotel is right by the walled city and the staff was really fantastic. We will go back soon.

Venere offered no smoking room but Hotel does not keep any rooms smoke free

The room was clean, but not very welcoming. They could use an upgrade to their furnishings, which were of less than desireable quality, and created a dingy, somewhat motel-like feeling. Great location though, if you can't get a hotel in the ancient part of Lucca (our preferred location).

The hotel is very conveniently located, both for the station and for the city itself, and provided all you would wish from a good business hotel. All locations within the walls are within comfortable walking distance. The room was spacious, well-furnished and quiet. The staff are helpful and informative. Breakfast set us up well for the day. We happily recommend it.

Situated a good walk from the main town. Staff not very welcoming - I wanted a drink at the bar, but was advised that there was a mini-bar in my room! The contents of the mini bar had been tampered with by a previous guest, leaving wine bottles filled up with water. Would not go back again. However, next door to the train station, for those travelling by train.

Just a pleasant one night stay on the way to genoa. Was able to visit the medieval town of Lucca by simply crossing the street and entering the walled porta; all within a 5 minute walk. Excellent ground floor room with living area on lower level and sleeping area above in an upper room extension. We recommend it well in spite of the failure to connect through the '800' exchange. Hotel Rex is right by the railway station and just over the road from the city walls. It's a perfect location. All of the staff were fine, and helpful. Room was good, and breakfast OK. The hotel felt even better, perhaps, because Venice and Florence (visited in days before) were so busy, we needed somewhere to be lazy, and drink too much Sambuca and Amoretto!! Lucca is the perfect town for that. The Rex was perfectly sited and suited. I suspect you won't be 'gobsmacked', but you won't be disappointed

We had a nice stay at the Hotel Rex. The hotel was not fancy, but had all the essentials for a short stay,

This hotel is located on a very noisy square by the railway station. The venue is good if you plan to travel a lot by train and not use the hotel much. My room overlooked the rubbish bins in a side lane; the decor badly needed refreshing; the wardrobe had drawer handles falling off; the corridor outside the room was not very clean; the shower was really small; one day they forgot to clean the room and one night coming back at 23.40 we were glared at by the receptionist. I would choose a nearby hotel within the walls on my next trip to Lucca and advise you to do the same.

We stayed at the Rex in the last week of August. The hotel is extremely convenient to train travelers, since it is only about 100 meters from the train station. Even so, the rooms are quiet and there is no noise. It is also convenient to enter the old city. The rooms are sufficient, although in need of paint. The shower will definetly be a problem for larger people, since we could barely turn around. The worst part was the bed. It was very lumpy and uncomfortable. We stayed at four other hotels during our trip and this was the poorest for the money. Even so, Lucca is wonderful and the people at the hotel tried their best to make our stay pleasant.

Had a great stay. Location of hotel was perfect. Loved my room it like was a nice and spacious studio. Looked forward to going back to the hotel room both nights. A lovely hotel in a fantastic location. two minutes from the station, yet quiet, and just across the road from the ancient city walls. We really enjoyed our stay and the service. Free internet was a bonus.

The hotel staff were friendly and welcoming from the minute we arrived, and they all spoke excellent English. The location of the hotel was ideal for exploring Lucca on foot, and for arrival / departure by train, being direcly opposite the train station. Despite this locaton, and a room on the square, we were not effected by noise at all We had a fabulous weekend and would not hesitate to recommend the Rex.

This hotel is in a good location in a square right by the station and just outside Lucca old town walls. Staff friendly and breakfast adequate. Drove from Pisa airport and found hotel quite easily. Free parking for hire car in square right outside hotel. Would recommend.

We could not have found a more perfect hotel for our stay in Lucca!! Our experience was just wonderful from beginning to end! The location on the square just outside of the train station and a short distance from the walls of the old city was so convenient. The gelato shop just outside of the entrance was a welcome stop each night as we returned from our adventures! The bicycles were such a great part of our stay as well! We received directions to a nearby grocery where we rode and selected picnic supplies easily carried in the attached baskets, then up to the avenue on top of the walls to the city and after riding the perimeter, we stopped for our picnic supper while watching the sunset over the foothills to the Italian Alps in the distance. Some of our absolute favorite memories in Italy! The breakfast was extensive, varied and fabulous! Each one of the staff were so helpful and friendly! They made us feel very welcome and I would very highly recommend this hotel to anyone traveling to Lucca!!!

This hotel is located very close to the entrance to the old town of lucca. It is idealy placed for a visit to the town located next to the railway and within walking distance of the town. The room we had was placed at the front of the hotal nearest to the road but the double glazed windows stopped any traffic noise. I would recommend this hotel and we will be staying there again.

Very friendly hotel with staff happy and willing to oblige. Even loaned bicycles at no extra cost! Very good location as the city walls are just across the road. Wise advice to ask for a room not overlooking the road, but even if so, rooms are air conditioned and windows soundproof from the traffic. Excellent access to rail station (if wanting to go to the coast or travelling on) which is just across the square, yet trains could not be heard from the room. I would return to this hotel.

Outstanding in every way! The location is perfect, the rooms and baths are comfortable and quiet, and the breakfast was sumptuous. Even better was the desk help: they went the 2nd (and 3rd) mile to help us with our needs. Rex was the best hotel experience we've had in Italy.

The location was great, right next to the train station. The staff was very helpful and the rooms were clean. The only problem was the phones did not work all the time.

It was advertised as a 3 star hotel and that's what it was. We wanted to be near the train station and it was. The room was large and clean.

The hotel is near train station, so it's easy to find if you take train to Lucca. The room is clean and the staff are kind. Our room is near the street, so we can hear people arguing in front our room. We got a jacuzzi in our room. Kind of luxury. However,

If you want to be outside the walled city this is a great location, staff very nice and the breakfast was very good, I would stay here agian.

We got this hotel primarily for location--proximaty to the train station. We could not have gotten closer. However, we traded location for the noise level. Since it is located so close to the train station, the traffic noise level was an issue. Also, our room had a bit a shower problems, no cold water. Scalding showers were not fun. However, I would consider booking the location again, especially if the circumstances of needing something close to the station was important.

Very close to station (important if traveling with luggage) yet still close enough to walk to the old walled city. Room spacious, esp. good that jug and coffee/tea were provided. Buffet breakfast was very good with an extensive variety. Staff very helpful, the booklets provided about the town were outstanding.

This hotel is located within 100 yards of the railway station, and 200 yeards from one of the gates into the old city. The room was comfortable, and the breakfast very good. I would recommend this hotel.

Location is good just outside the walled town near the station but not noisy and with ample car parking. Rooms were clean and spacious and the staff friendly. Continental breakfast was o.k. I would definately stay here again when I visit Lucca

Well located next to train station and very easy walking to town. Rooms were dark, but clean enough for one-night.

The hotel is well situated and very convenient for both the station and Lucca central. If you are travelling by train then it is probably one of your best options. The road outside can be noisy so see if you can get a room which is not facing the road. Facilities inside are plenty good enough for most travellers. We had a very enjoyable stay.

For anyone traveling by train - the location of the Rex is perfect. The Rex is just across the street from the train station. The walk into town takes about 10 minutes since the hotel is outside the city walls. But, the walk is pleasant and safe. The staff does not speak much English but everyone was very nice and helpful. The room had air conditioning, televsion, a comfortable bed and a clean bathroom. The breakfast was nice and there was cappucino made to order.
