Hotel Annex was perfect. Recently restored.with air conditioning which in this heat wave was necessary. No breakfast is offered of any kind so that was the only inconvenience. Good location. Daily parking in their lot for 7 euros was very helpful. Site says free internet in rooms but sign says you must pay..we didn't have to after asking for password and also showing this on the reservation. Giovani manages the annex. Speaks english and very helpful!

we stayed 3 nights in Oct 2011 and were very satisfied. The ratio price vs service is not the best. per person 45 € without breakfast is in my eyes a lot. But there are good bars very close to have breakfast - even in bed (coffee to go). The location is brilliant and the street is very quiet. All in all, recommandable.

This hotel had a large clean room and small bathroom that transitioned into a shower. Some staff spoke English. Most did not. The staff smoke in the thoroughly signed no smoking hotel. Internet is listed as part of the accommodation but it is not free and you must buy expensive wifi cads to use it. Hotel staff will call you and knock on your door before 10 am to get you to leave your room so they can clean but no where is it stated that you must leave at this time. The second night we came back to a partially clean room where there was a dirty rag ontop of our things and the trash can in the sink. I would not recommend this hotel and would not stay here again.

This is a nice, quiet place to stay in Lucca. It was about a 12 minute walk from the train station with luggage and not real easy to find on foot. However, the location inside the wall is very good. The room was quiet and very clean with a desk and chair, large double bed and small TV. The bathroom had a very nice, spacious shower and was very clean. The bath towels were only slightly larger than a hand towel and made of linen making it difficult to dry off, even for someone small like me. The desk clerk spoke very minimal English and I speak very minimal Italian, but we managed. Lucca is a beautiful place, and I would stay at Diana again on my next visit.

Diana is situated perfectly right inside the walls of Lucca and has a friendly helpful staff. We had a triple room with bathroom (although we only needed a double)and the room was clean but quite old. We thought there would be a/c but there was only a fan. The hotel is a very quiet and comfortable hotel situated just inside the old city walls in Lucca and within walking distance from the station and all the most important places to see in the centre. It is a two minute walk from the beautiful cathedral. My daughter and I were lucky to be given a quiet room which looked onto a garden at the back of the hotel and so it was very peaceful. The hotel owners were very friendly and helpful. My only criticism was that breakfast was not included and the nearest bar in the cathedral square was OK but rather expensive.

Albergo Diana is a great value! The room was quiet, clean, attractive, decent sized, with a modern shower bathroom and a nice view of the garden. It was not in the higher-rated "annex" that other Venere people liked, so I was a bit leery in booking it, but it turned out to be lovely: in the main, quaint building, on a lovely, quaint street just steps from the cathedral and ancient walls but away from the crowds. The little lobby area also has some good English-language guide books to Lucca and Tuscany for easy reference.

This is a gem. Hotels within the walls of Lucca are generally expensive, so we were a little apprehensive when we booked this. "Why is it so cheap?", "What's wrong with it?" It's perfect, clean, modern, spacious interior and a central location. OK, so there is no breakfast, but there are numerous cafes in Lucca, only a couple of minutes from the hotel. We'll be back!

We were really pleased with how close to the train station this was. A great approach, walking up to the fabulous city walls and coming out the other side to find the little maze of streets but simple directions to the main hotel but we were in the annex round the corner. Very central, but isn't everywhere in Lucca! Lovely town and this was a good base for us.

Six very pleasant days - despite bad weather - in lovely Lucca and surroundings. We stayed in the Dependence of hotel Diana and felt very independent. We had no need for public areas in the hotel area. The bar for a capuccino in the morning was just a few steps away and for lunch and dinner Lucca has many good restaurants to offer. Lucca is perfect for everyone who is looking for a calm, but never boring environment.

Great family-run property located inside the city walls. Well worth the money. Location ideal. Quick walk from the train station. Bike rental within blocks (we rode on top of the wall to the laundry mat). This was our base of operation for two weeks. Newer Annex rooms preferable to rooms in the older, main hotel and priced accordingly. We stayed in three different rooms because we left for several days in Siena, returned, and then extended our stay one night. There was a bit of confusion, but nothing serious. Not all members of the family speak English with parents depending on adult sons for translation. Location is between two of the less crowded squares with charming bars, a variety of restaurants-fine dining to moderate-all worth patronizing, shops, historic Cathedral and even a cinema. We loved Lucca, would go back in a minute and stay in the Diana Annex again. The room in the main hotel was simpler and without satellite TV, mini bar or air conditioning and was priced accordingly. Not bad, just not as nice as the Annex with its private entrance (the family is in the main building) and welcoming outdoor cafe table and chairs used by us every day as a meeting place. My husband read his book there as he waited for me, our son slept most of one night there when he came home at 2 am and realized he'd forgotten his key. Apparently the night life was adequate for a 22-year-old. Great time was had by all. We were lucky to witness the annual Volto Santo celebration as well as the monthly antique market. I am convinced the bike rides on the wall kept me from gaining weight from the outstanding food.

We were traveling by train, and the hotel is very conveniently located near the entrance to the city closest to the station - an easy walk. We arrived in Lucca on Saturday and found the hotel fairly easily from the train station. When we checked in to the Albergo Diana we were shown to our room in the dependence (around the corner from the original hotel property) promptly. I'm not sure if it was the language difference but there was an air of indifference about the desk personnel. I'm glad that we stayed in the dependence as we were not forced to interact with the staff unless we needed assistance. The dependence uses an electronic key card system instead of the typical key that you would turn in to the desk each time you left the property. The bathrooms were clean and impressive with marble and tile. We stayed two nights and were sorry that breakfast was not included in the room as it was difficult to find a place that offered breakfast items that compared to what had been provided by other hotels on our trip. There are wonderful trattorias and ristorantes near Piazza San Michele. There is also a church nearby, I believe it was San Giovanni, that held a concerto of Puccini arias; it is not to be missed. The best thing to get a real overview of the city is to rent bicycles (there was a place in the Piazza Santa Maria del Borgo) and ride around the city on the wall. We saw another bicylce rental place near the hotel, but it was not open during our stay. Or climb the Torre Guinigi and see all of Lucca.

The bathroom was wonderful: huge and beautiful in white marble, well-appointed, with everything working properly. The reception area in the main hotel building is pretty although small and crowded. The building in which we were assigned rooms was down the street, and its "lobby" was merely an entrance hallway, three or four metres square. After some pleading on our part, the manager (who spoke almost no English) helped us drag our luggage from the reception area down the street to our building. However, she had no idea how to help our driver negotiate the tiny tunnel from the alley to the car park, and if we had followed her instructions, our small rental car would have sustained expensive damage. A friend who lives in Lucca was fortunately there and helped us find another route into the parking place, or we would have had to pay street parking. As it was, the hotel-provided parking was not inexpensive, and we had to move the car by noon. I realize that the city laws governing driving and parking inside Lucca are necessarily restrictive, but I would like to have known beforehand how hard it would be to park even a tiny car near the hotel. Because of that, I would be more likely to recommend this hotel to a group traveling by bus, or to someone traveling by other than private car. It would have been nice to be offered breakfast along with our room. This was the only hotel in all of our Italian tour that didn't include breakfast.

The location is excellent, and the owners were helpful and kind. The directions from the train station could have been clearer and more precise, the website actually states a different main gate, Porta Elisa, than the hotel said when we called from the station. The closer main gate is Porto Pietro, and there is an unmarked pedistrian walkway directly across from the station, we took when leaving. The room was large and comfortable, the only complaint was that the showers in both our room and the bathroom for the single rooms had a lot of mold in the tile grout, which was not good. We'd certainly recommend it --especially after they bleach the mold!

Albergo Diana is a nice hotel inside the walls of Lucca. It´s possible to get there by car. It´s very quiet and clean. The hotel is very near the cathedral of San Martino which is one of the most important of Lucca, and you can see all the city, the beautiful churches, towers and squares just walking around.

The hotel was in the perfect location within the walls of Lucca in a quiet but extremely handy location. The staff were welcoming despite our arrival at 1:00am! Our rooms were in the annexe and were excellent and kept spotless, lovely bathrooms with fresh towels daily. There was aircon and heating if needed. We had no need of any of the public rooms so can’t comment on them. No breakfast provided but we found a lovely place in the square just a minute’s walk away which served delicious pastries and cappuccino! We would highly recommend this hotel to anyone visiting this beautiful town.

Nice location within the walls of Lucca. No breakfast available but a couple of good options within three minutes walk. Good size room although bathroom rather small with a shower in the middle which made it awkward to get to the toilet. Staff welcoming and efficient although room just off the reception and you could hear everyword. Good value for money however and I would use the hotel again.

An earlier comment indicated that the owner was something less than pleasant. Not true. We found him to be gracious, generous with his time and most helpful with directions, suggestions, etc. We extended our stay from 2 days to 4.

This hotel was excellent value for money. We stayed in the Annexe which I would recommend. It was very quiet at night, and the rooms were a good size. The bathrooms were very good. We used the hotel parking which worked well, but dont bring a big car!!

If you are driving make absolutely sure you have a good map and directions!! The streets are SO narrow (as usual). The Diana has parking (the car nestles up to the Duomo!) and charges 5Euro a night for it. It tests your driving skills that's for sure. Location is wonderful, so close to everything and the walls for your morning walk. We stayed in the annexe - which was very nice. The main hotel where reception is looked old fashioned (vinyl heaven) but we didn't see any rooms.

We stayed in the annex which was newly furnished and decorated. The bathroom was excellent. Breakfast was extra and served in the room so we opted to have breakfast at a local cafe - a good way to start the day. Our stay was relaxing and enjoyable.

Stayed in one of the Dependance rooms, nicely furnished with a huge, modern bathroom, by far the nicest of any of the hotels I stayed in - it was actually as large as the room itself. Hotel was well situated, close to the nearest entrance through the ramparts from the train station. The gentleman at the check-in counter at the main hotel spoke only italian but was extremely pleasant and insisted on carrying my bag around the corner and demonstrated the key system and AC. I understand that breakfast can be arranged to be delivered to the rooms but I didn't bother, there are several cafes at the nearby piazzas. Enjoy Lucca - it is a lovely little city - I'd recommend renting a bike for your entire stay- the tourist office and other places rent them and you can arrange a lower rate for a full day than the hourly rate. It is the best way to get around and you'll instantly feel like a resident. There is virtually no car traffic to worry about inside the walls and the ramparts are ideal for cycling.

Our room at the Diana was surprisingly modern in a beautiful medival town. The staff were very friendly and the cleanliness of the room was excellent. Lucca is a lovely central place to stay Florence Pisa Viareggio are all just a cheap train ride away. I will be returning shortly with friends. Also another plus factor is if you can fly with Ryanair and book early you can get a really good deal.

This is a beautiful hotel and I would recomend it to any tourists. The rooms are quiet and are in the walled city. However for the price quoted, no breakfast was served and I think it is a bit expensive. It is close to the train station and is very convenient to PISA and Florence.

The hotel was located in a good position with easy access to all main sights in Lucca. The hotel was very clean and comfortable. The only downfall was that no-one spoke English and we didn't speak Italian! However they were still friendly and this wouldn't put us off recommending it or staying there again.

We stayed in the Albergo Diana dependence. It ws very quiet and spotlessly clean, bedroom as well as very nice bath. The only complaint we have is the staff was not friendly at all. Upon arrival, they insisted on KEEPING our pass ports when no one else in Italy did this. Others simply copied it or didn't ask at all. This made us uneasy. THen on check out, they questioned the signiture with the one on our credit card. And they were holding our pass ports!? Outside of the staff, it was very nice and quiet as well.

VERY helpful staff. The room we had was in the annex (in dependance) and was relatively small. The dependance rooms look a lot better than the rooms in the main hotel. The room was in excellent condition with a great bathroom and effective air-conditioning. Would recommend this hotel highly. We traveled a lot in Umbria and found that the prices in Lucca were higher than in Umbria, though the prices perhaps only reflect the proximity of Florence and Pisa.

Rooms were clean and comfortable. The hotel is hard to access by car (until you know the secret). Your maps could use a little help (i.e., which gate to enter and which streets are one-way in the right direction. Parking is tough for a large vehicle (I had a large van) but not impossible, and OK for normal cars.

Diana-especially the dependence room where we stayed--was great! I do not know about the regular hotel--it seems older. If you can choose dependence. Parking is only 5 Euros and well worth it. There is no breakfast--but the price for value is good.

The Diana annexe is very comfortable and the rooms of high quality and exceptionally clean. Like much of the accommodation within the Lucca walls it gives the feeling of actually living there rather than staying in an impersonal hotel. If you value independence and freedom rather than a vast range of services and facilities, but with a high standard of room comfort and quietness, then the Diana is for you. We liked it very much and found it an ideal base for exploring Lucca.

We stayed in the Dependance annexe in a wonderful, big, modern room which was like staying in our own apartment because we had our own card key and did not have to go through reception everytime. The bathroom was fantastic with the marble-tiled walls and all facilities. The location was fantastic, being close to the train station as well as to the town centre. We had no problem finding the hotel as it was very close to the train station. No breakfast is included in the price because they do not have a breakfast room, but it could be delivered to your room at an extra cost. This was not a problem. The owner does not speak English, though his son does. This was not a problem as it helped me to practise my Italian. I would recommend the Hotel Diana and would stay there again.

We travelled to Lucca by train, and the hotel is conveniently situated less than 10 minutes walk from the train station, within those impressive city walls. The room was spacious and clean, and away from the street, so thankfully quiet. The staff did not speak english, but we found them to be friendly, plus they showed great patience helping us, as we do not speak italian.

We were glad that we had read the reviews on this hotel before we left. We had a lot of trouble finding it, getting several sets of conflicting directions from locals we stopped. Then, finally, we found it, and we were completely put off by the reception we received. However, the room was very nice, and the bathroom was particularly great in comparison to other places we stayed at on the trip. There was absolutely no trouble leaving luggage after check-out, when we made one last tour of the town and ate lunch, and the room cleaner even packaged up a pair of earrings we had left and stayed around to make sure we got them.

How to reach Diana Hotel

The Hotel Diana and the Dépendance are situated in the historical centre of Lucca, an area that is easily reached from the city's main points of entry. The railway station is 5 minutes away on foot, the bus terminal is only 800 metres away, and the motorway exit is 2 km away.
The following are directions for reaching the Hotel.

By car
1)From the A11 Firenze-Mare motorway, exit at Lucca. Keeping in the right-hand lane, continue along Viale Europa in the direction of the railway station. After the first traffic light and after crossing the railway overpass, turn right onto Viale Carducci (the city walls are on your left). Continue along this road until you reach the railway station (Piazza Ricasoli). At this point, the city walls will be in front of you. Turn left onto Viale Regina Margherita. After 200 metres, turn right through the Porta S. Pietro gate. Follow the road to the right, inside the walls. After about 150 metres, turn left into Via del Molinetto, where you will find the Hotel.

2)From the A12 motorway, exit at Lucca. Continue straight until you reach the motorway link road. Turn left onto Viale Europa (McDonald's is on your right) then follow the directions in point 1).

If you come from any other direction, the point of reference is Porta S. Pietro, the name of one of the gates in the south of the city which lead to the centre and which is close to the railway station. From there, follow the directions given above.

Remember that the green road signs indicate motorways, whereas the blue road signs indicate main roads. Information about parking: inside the city walls, car parks are either on payment (the stalls are marked with blue lines) or they are for residents only (these are marked with yellow lines). Parking is not allowed in the yellow stalls as these are for residents and a permit is required. Outside the walls, the situation is the same for the blue and yellow stalls, but there are also white stalls which are free for an unlimited time or for a limited time (e.g. 1 hour). The areas, stalls, spaces reserved for the disabled can be used by anyone (from Italy or abroad) who displays the special permit.
