We only stayed one night and it was unfortunate that there was a payloader outside the room for the time I was trying to take a nap. The proprieter was so helpful. He really made our short time near Lucca so enjoyable. Great recommendations for parking and seeing Lucca. Would definitely recommend.

We stayed at the hotel the third week of September. We choose the hotel based on the fact that we arrived very late into Pisa but wanted to stay outside of the city limits our first night without having to drive too far. Although it was midnight by the time we arrived, the staff were very welcoming and accomodating. The rooms were very spacious and functional although a little plain. Breakfast was good but would have preferred self serve to chose a few extra helpings of some items. The coffee was excellent but again seconds were not offered unless you requested. Throughout our stay the staff were very helpful and friendly and willing to listen to our halting Italian as well as help out in English. We spent the first day in Lucca and returned to the hotel to spend the nite as the location was very convenient. We ate dinner the second night in the hotel restaurant and enjoyed it very much - excellent quality and pleasant surroundings in the diningroom. Location was within easy driving of both Pisa and Florence. We would return and a stay a night or two but no longer.

This is a very friendly family-run hotel. It is near to Lucca and is surrounded by stunning scenery. We were well looked after and would definitely stay there again if we were in the area.

We used the "Da Carlos" as a base for visiting Lucca and Pisa before we flew home from Pisa Airport. The hotel is ideally situated between both cities. We found the hotel staff to be very friendly and helpful and our three night stay was a pleasant way to end our holiday. The food in the "Da Carlos" restaurant is also worth sampling. We ate there twice and were not disappointed. The location of the hotel is not spectacular as it is sited next to a main road but as I said before this is also an advantage when wanting to travel to Lucca and Pisa. I would highly recommend the "Da Carlos" as a "staging post" (1-3 nights) but not necessarily for a full week/two week holiday destination - although it would serve as a touring base for Northern Tuscany.

The lack of lounge areas was a bit disappointing as it wasn't possible to relax outside of our room or the restaurant. With no pool or other facilities it made for a basic hotel stay. Restaurant staff were excellent, and reception staff good. Location was very convenient for access to Lucca and Pisa.

Carlos and his daughter were great. They both spoke English particularly Tania. The hotel was very well located very close to the city of Lucca and close to Pisa. It is handy to have a car as it would be a little inconvenient to catch public transport. The breakfast was very good and quite plentiful and it also had a good flat screen TV with Sky. The surroundings of this hotel are wonderfully quiet and scenic.

Owner/Manager & staff were extremely helpful with directions, local info, and helping us with reservations in the next city on our trip. They were extremely warm & friendly and we felt like family .The location was between Lucca & Pisa and required a car to get to the cities, but a very short drive. It was worth the distance as the restaurant in the hotel was excellant and freindly and there were two others nearby as good.Taking a walk through Santa Maria del Giudice is a worthwhile experiance in itself. We are happy we stayed there.

This is a nice hotel that you will need a car to access. Excellent attached resturant with delicious specialities of the region. Very helpful desk staff. Beautiful view of surrounding hills from our rear room window. Very good plentiful breakfast. Internet access. Easy to find on the main road between Pisa and Lucca. This was our first time driving in Italy and we used our Garmin GPS with European card which made driving easy and fun.

The hotel was easy to find and very accessible to both Lucca and Pisa. The staff was very helpful and spoke excellent English. The meals we had at the restaurant were superb and the chef came out to meet us. The waiter was very friendly. The farro and bean soup was so delicious that we are trying to find recipes to make it at home. We will definitely stay at Da Carlos again.

By far the most enjoyable and accommodating of all the hotels we stayed in during our 3-week Italian vacation. Driving from the Autostrada was tricky: take the Lucca Est exit and follow the BLUE S12 (not the GREEN) signage toward Pisa when you reach the roundabout at the exit. The hotel is about 10 km south of the walled city, with plenty of free parking. Managers Eduardo and Carlotta da Carlos and their staff (especially Monica) were extremely hospitable and helpful. The reception area and lobby are open until about 1 am, although at least one of the night staff has very limited English. We had 4 rooms for 11 people for 5 nights, on the front and sides of the first floor, with easy walker/wheelchair access in the lift. Rooms in the front of the hotel faced a busy road, but during the day (and with windows shut at night to discourage mid-July mosquitoes) the traffic noise seemed minimal. All rooms were tiled and very clean, with daily room service. Room 115 (triple) had a spacious balcony with table and chairs. All rooms had refrigerators and safes, adequate power outlets, and A/C. Reasonably spacious bathrooms with tubs and shower curtains (requiring some care to avoid flooding the floor). There’s a computer with free Internet access in a small room off the lobby, and room 115 was the only room where the wireless signal did not reach. Great breakfast (meats, cheeses, bread and rolls, jams and preserves, cereals, juices, yogurt, and coffee/macchiato/chocolate) was served by hotel staff in the outdoor patio area. The food and service at the hotel restaurant were excellent. The hotel staff also recommended La Cecca, a local restaurant 2 km north, where the food and service were absolutely wonderful. Our entire group went back to La Cecca again 2 nights later for a second very enjoyable and relaxing dinner. We're already planning a return visit to Lucca, and this is definitely where we'll stay. No problem paying with VISA. Checkout was fast and without problems.

We stayed at the hotel for a week and had a very relaxed holiday. The hotel is positioned very well for visiting many parts of Tuscany. We visited the following: Lucca (<15 mins), Pisa (<20 mins), Florence (~1 hr), Siena (~2 hr), Volterra and San Gimignano (~1.5 hr on country roads), Pescia (<40 min). The hotel staff are very friendly and helpful. There is a restaurant that, although it is not run by the hotel, is in the same building and is of excellent quality. Again the staff here are very welcoming and pleasant. If you are looking for a good clean well kept room and comfortable surroundings, and I was, then I have no hesitation in recommending this hotel in a beautiful part of Italy. I would also have no hesitation in going back.

This one was really, REALLY hard to find. Nobody knew the area (Santa Maria Del Giudice wasn't even on the local map) and it would if they would give the real route name (SS12). But it is true that it is 5miles from the Tower. I was there in the low season. PROS: Biggest bed ever I was in, true parking. CONS: Did I say hard to find? Immediate surrounding, Horrible breakfast.

My wife and I stayed here while touring Italy and attending the wedding of some friends. We both like the hotel, finding it peaceful and relaxing, and in an ideal position for visits to Lucca and Pisa. We spent two nights at the hotel. The rooms where very clean and comfortable. One thing to be aware of if you're navigating your way here using in-car Sat-Nav is that the main road running past the hotel may not be mapped correctly: with the TomTom Go (using TeleAtlas map data) the road is actually about 200 metres east of where the TTG thinks it is.

Was just stopping by one night, and for that it was more than OK. The restaurant is also OK, even if too "turistic", in the sense that the meal is of good quality, but not for people always looking for excellence, like I'm. I'll defenitely come back if in the area.

Very nice facility, although a lot noisier than I expected -- then again it is on the main alternate route between Lucca and Pisa other than the autostrada! The surrounding area was very bucolic. My one complaint was the quality of the directions to the facility (from the map on the website)-- it was not clear what exit to take from the autostrada and how far to go on what turned out to be route 12. Dinner at the nearby restaurant was excellent. Breakfast at the hotel was very good.

This hotel is conveniently located between Pisa and Lucca. The room and bathroom was large by European standards. It was very clean, airy and comfortable. There is a wonderful restaurant adjacent to the hotel, where we had the most fantastic meal! Our waiter realized we knew just a little Italian, and he was very accommodating to talk a little slower with us. He also recommended a great bottle of wine to have with dinner. We would definitely stay at this hotel again on a future visit. Breakfast was the usual coffee, juice, rolls, and yogurt.

Second time at Da Carlos, we love it. Staff are very welcoming and all facilities are excellent. The restaurant is brilliant, food is good, price is reasonable and service is excellent. There are a few other restaurants within walking distance for variety, so that we could still indulge in the vino without driving! Brilliant area, lots to do and good links to road network for exploring further. We love this hotel and recommend it to friends.

A family of five, two rooms booked for one night. Excellent location between Pisa nad Lucca, with a free private car parking. Try to park on the front of the hotel first, the place is pleasantly shadowed in the morning. Ask for rooms of the back of the hotel - the road is close and VERY busy. The minor annoyance we found in the room was the air condition fan, a bit too noisy if on higher gear. There was password protected internet Wi-Fi hot spot available in the rooms, not advertised, however since we have not pursued it further, I cannot say whether it was of the hotel or one nearby. We have not used the hotel restaurant, but I belive it shoud be fine. The staff was equally happy to direct us to the restaurant nearby (what adds a positive mark for them) with really good food and garden on the back - important, having in mind the busy road. The staff was very friendly, competent and supportive; they will give you a good tourist advice if happen you need one. We will definitely use the same hotel again.

Nice 3 star hotel. The owner was very helpful with directions into Pisa and Lucca as well as information about the bus service into Firenza.

The hotel and service were marvelous, the prices from venere were high in comparison to other hotels.

The staff, especially Edwardo, was excellent and very helpful. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would return there without question. The maps and directions we received to Lucca, Pisa, Viarregio as well as several small towns we visited were accurate and easy. The view of the hills from our room with the sun streaming in each morning was spectacular. Breakfasts were delicious and the atmosphere with the other guests delightful. Nearby restaurants were very good too. Only small complaints were the cigarette smoke in the commen areas mostly by the staff on duty and the use of shower curtain in our bathroom (would have preferred a folding glass screen). Otherwise, it was great!

The Da Carlos was ideal for the first two nights of our stay in Italy, because it was close to the Pisa airport and easily reached in our rental car. It's located on a pretty (but busy) road just about halfway between Lucca and Pisa. We ate in their excellent restaurant, and were served a nice breakfast in the morning. It isn't super fancy, but was very comfortable. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful. It was a perfect base for our sightseeing trips to Lucca and Pisa, and just down the road was another excellent restaurant, La Cecca, which we found in our Michelin red book.

We were both very pleased with the hotel and the staff. The views were great and the helpful nature of the staff on reception made our stay a pleasure.

Service was horrible...we waited for 20 minutes in the lobby to be helped whilst the desk clerk was having a personal converstaion on her mobile. We will never stay here again

Better directions would have helped. Da Carlos is about 1/2 way between Pisa & Lucca. Restaurant especially good. Good food, well served. Very friendly hotel staff. Downgraded noise level in room due to crazy barking dog. Barked all night! Otherwise, fine.

Nice hotel. Has an elevator to 2nd floor rooms which we found to be important. The hotel has a very nice restaurant and we didn't find a need to look elsewhere. The only problem that we had was that the water went out in the evening. It was back in service the next day. Seems is was a main problem. Service was helpful and courteous.

A moderate but clean hotel. Room a bit small. Restaurant seems to become famous for its cook, but we did not know this and went to Lucca.

Hotel was good quality 3 star standard.Well located for visiting LUCCA and PISA. A car is considered essential. The restaurant {which I believe is under different management }was exellent,in every respect, notably quality and price.

Not a good match between photos on website and actual hotel. On a very busy street, not scenic as shown. Room was clean but small. Bed comfortable and breakfast pleasant.

We had a difficulty to find the place because it is actually outside Lucca in the middle of the road between Lucca and Pisa. The room was very small for 3 people. Very friendly welcome, great breakfast, excellent restaurant for dinner. A good choice assuming you have a car.

We stayed only one night but I think it was enough. It was not that bad but I think that the web pages give a little too positive picture of the hotel. In reality the hotel is situated next to quite a busy road. Rooms were nice and spacious but beds could have been little better and the air-conditioning was not fully reliable. Also the hotel does not have such a central location as they advertise on the web page. I sent some additional questions to the hotel via venere.com when I made the booking but I never got a reply. We did not try the restaurant but went to Lucca for dinner. I have seen better breakfasts in other 3 star hotels.

The "Da Carlos" is located at the street between Lucca and Pisa. The employees are friendly and competent, the rooms clean and comfortable, it is a fine hotel. We enjoyed our stay! One ord about the restaurant: it is a good restaurant, pizza is good with a good relationship between price and quality. But pasta and salad were very small and expensive.

Our stay at the Da Carlos was a nice and pleasant one. The restaurant offered a wide variety of dishes and the staff both of the restaurant and hotel was friendly and competent. Everybody was trying to make our stay a most pleasant one. Our room was clean, spacious and quiet, however, it was not facing the via nueva a pisa. The rooms there might be noisy. The hotel's location can be regarded advantageous as you are almost in between the cities of Lucca and Pisa. All in all, we can recommend this hotel/restaurant and might go there again next year.

We had a great stay and the staff was just excellent. They were very helpful and went out of there way to make feel comfortable. The location was away from the bustle of Pisa and Lucca and the food in the restaurant was also very good. We would recommend staying at the Da Carlos for anyone staying in the Lucca or Pisa area.
