The room was clean and comfortable, with an amazing view. The hotel is located on a narrow steep road with minimal sidewalks, but that's part of the Lisbon experience. The tram is a few minutes' walk away.

Very nice hotel, very helpful and serviceminded staff. Breakfast was quite ok. We stayed 5 nights in a Double Superior room with Terrace. It was nice to sit in the huge terrace even if it was rather windy i the after noons. The location is up in the hill below the castle, but the distance to centre is rather small and we went up and down the stairs/roads every day.

Recommend that you reserve a superior room with terrace. The view from the terrace is lovely. It was so good to relax on the terrace after a day's sightseeing. The hotel staff made you feel very welcome and were extremely helpful.

Strong points: cleanliness of hotel and room view. Weak points: the staff should be more friendly, should help with touristic orientation, and at breakfast we should not have to ask for milk and bread and vegetables and cheese when it finished.

Breakfast was REALLY very poor, rooms are good and clean. The hotel by walking is quite far from the city center and the surroundings by night are not so recommended. I wanted to reach the hotel with my rented car, however i took an hour to find it (also if i had a navigator) and the streets were very narrow (it is the old part of the city). So i left my car and took a taxi, but also the taxi driver had difficulties to find the hotel .

First time in Lisbon. We have loved this hotel, we have really had a great time. We enjoyed being in the heart of a capital city, and at the same time being in a very quiet place. Coming from Paris and being in that area of Lisbon has been the exact change of atmosphere were were looking for. We loved the view from our room and from our bed ( old churches, small parks, the hills), we appreciated looking down into the river from the streets around the hotel, and everything being so near_various churches, the pantheons, the castle, and the flea market near-by). Walking down the stairs to the main squares of the town was so easy. The people in the hotel give you the information you need and they are very nice. May be I would have appreciated the possibility to have a simple dinner at the hotel on our firts evening, because we had left home so early and we were tired. But apart from that, we greatly recommend this hotel.

Excellent quality hotel, 10 minutes by taxi from the airport. Reception realised I had my birthday and...a bottle of champagne was waiting for us in the room in the evening. Location: in direct proximity of the Castle and the Cathedral, a stop of tram no. 28 also nearby. What else do you need?

A beautiful property on a hill underneath the castle in the historical city. Huge rooms, impeccably clean, a nice seating area with a coffee maker. The price was a bit higher but we got our room upon arrival in the morning and the breakfast buffet is substantive plus Internet free. About 15-20 minutes walk to the business historical center downhill or by tram but very pleasant. There are neighborhood restaurants on a few plazas nearby and access to outlooks with a fabulous view. I would come back in a heartbeat. The little trams are fantastic.

Excellent 4* hotel in the old Alfama district. A fine little hotel that looks like it's been recently refurbished. Helpful, friendly, knowledgeable staff. Our good-sized 2nd floor room had a huge balcony with fabulous views. Extraordinary value through Venere.com: €85 room rate (incl. breakfast) less than half standard rate (in February so off-season, but still a great deal). Quiet hotel/area and hilly, so maybe not for clubbers or the infirm; but highly recommended for most people.

Wonderful small hotel with very friendly staff. Room service menu is limited. It is in an old section of the city with narrow, cobble stone streets. It is also very hilly, which is good if you like vigorous exercise. It is about a 10-15 minute walk to the shopping district which has pedestrian malls, outdoor cafes etc. About 10 minute to the water. We would definitely stay there again.

This is a lovely small hotel, not too expensive, located in a very interesting part of Lisbon up by the Castello. Not for those who don't like to walk, though of course there are always taxis. Very friendly and sensible staff, some nice unpretentious restaurants within easy reach, not to mention the Saturday flea market, fado restaurants, and historic (and evidently gentrifying, or neighborhood watching) old neighborhoods. We used it as a base to sightsee happily all over Lisbon, and found it a much more interetsing neighborhood than Liberdade where most hotels are. We were there in November, lots of rain, so couldn't benefit much from the charming terrace with its great view, but can't wait to go back.

The surroundings are poor - the streets are rotten, so you must tell the customers to be in a very good condition.... Not so nice with drinking men on every corner on the way down to the nr 12 tram . Recommandations of places to eat could be much better. But the hotel itself is excellent and really nice.

Excellent and very friendly service. The staff were invariably helpful and welcoming. Internet connection in room, but no access to computer, however internet café round the corner. Only an overnight stay, but will certainly come back again for longer. Would recommend tram ride through town to terminus and back to get a quick taste of Lisbon.

It's always hard to tell what you might get when travelling overseas, and for what price, but we were pleasantly surprised by the Olissippo Castelo. We were upgraded to a suite, and there was a patio area (many rooms had the patio) with a great view. We were greeted with a 1/2 litre of wine in our room. The location is near the castle entrance. We were very pleased with the hotel.

The hotel was really a jewel. My husband and I had a room w/ a terrace with a great view over the city. Everything about this hotel was well thought out and comfortable. Excellent value for the money. We were on our way to Madeira and returned to Lisbon on the other end of our trip: unfortunately, there were no rooms available, so we sampled two other hotels in the same price range, and they were significantly inferior to Ollissipio Castello. Highly recommended !

After much research online we chose the Olissippo Hotel and were very pleased with our choice. It is located right by the Castle of St George which is a definite must to visit. Since the hotel location is up one of the hills that make up Lisbon, anyone staying there should realize that walking to and from the hotel will be up and down the hill. The walk is not bad for someone who enjoys walking and is in reasonable shape but anyone with health issues might have to utilize taxis or the electric rail cars. Having said that, my wife and I walked to and from the hotel with no problem. It was a nice walk to the Rua Augusta area where we loved walking through all the shops and eating at the Pastelarias. Along the way to Rua Augusta, there were also many little shops and eating places to explore. This is quintessential "old Europe" so slow down your pace and savor it if you can. This location is also far from the main arteries that run through the city and therefore provided a nice quiet environment. The breakfast was very good: great pastries, breads, cold cuts, cereals, juices, along with scrambled eggs and bacon. Please note the bacon is not fried until crispy like Americans usually like but it is very tasty nonetheless. Someone had previously commented they thought the bacon was "boiled". NOT TRUE! Our room (401) offered an incredible view of the city, had all the room we needed and had a nice roomy bathroom. From what I could see the 3rd floor (the floor below us) seemed to offer access to an outdoor patio with the same view. Everything was very clean and they even gave us a small bottle (200 ml) of Port Wine later on our day of arrival. We thought that was a really nice touch. If you like a firm bed then you will love this one. It did not hamper our sleep but some might find it too hard. The hotel is small in size so it offers a more personal touch than the larger ones. We were both extremely pleased with our choice and will definitely stay there again next time.

Our reception from (male) receptionist was efficient but quite lacking in warmth. Rooms (superior worth booking) were spacious with great view and huge terrace. Location would suit good walkers, as streets are medieval, cobbled and steep. Tram use is essential. Don't bring the car!

Good location of the Hôtel, few stairways to go to the commercial quater, five minutes to the Castelo and to the famous quater of Alfama. A real nice view from the room.

An excellent tourist hotel in the old city near to the castle. We had room 302 which was very spacious, with a large terrace and lovely view. Only slight criticism with the room was the lack of tea / coffee making facilities and no iron / ironing board, which you would expect with a 4* hotel. Very nice guesture of a small bottle of Ruby Port in the room upon arrival. Hotel was very clean, quiet, restful and well maintained and the staff did all they could to help. Breakfast was the usual continental offering plus a small cooked selection of bacon, scrambled eggs and small frankfurters. I would certainly recommend this hotel to any tourist visiting Lisbon and I will stay there again if returning. The only restaurant I could recommend from our 3 day visit is Sur Sangam, which is in the main town at Rua dos Correeiros no126, 1100-163, Lisoa. Tel/fax 21 346 91 19, which served very good Portuguese, Italian and India food, with first class service and at a reasonal price.

The area of Lisbon that the hotel is situated in is very, very steep, and tricky to navigate for the first time without a very good map. We're putting this first because it was our only problem. Lisbon's public transport system is excellent (and cheap), but the tram will only get you so close to the hotel, and after that it's a bit of a struggle with cases. However, as we discovered on the way home, taxis are very cost-effective. Check-in was handled warmly and efficiently, as were all our later visits to Reception. Our room was a standard double, but was of a size that would be considered deluxe in most European cities - especially as it had a huge 2-level terrace. The Castelo is well-deserving of its 4 stars, with the usual bathrobes, good toiletries and superb room service. Free wi-fi is available in the lobby, with plenty of sofas, but fortunately the signal reached at least as far as our room on the second floor. Breakfast went beyond the usual continental selection (which was vast), with American-style bacon, eggs and sausage. The area is not very touristy - something that we quite enjoy. However, this does mean that a bit of legwork is required to see the sights, although the hotel is right against the castle walls. There are a number of small restaurants nearby, and we would particularly recommend the one opposite the nearby São Tomé tram stop. The Parque das Nações on the outskirts of the city is well worth a visit, in particular the Lisbon Oceanarium.

We stayed at the Olissippo for 2 nights and we were then spending some time up the coast. We loved our stay so much that we booked 2 more nights at the hotel. We stayed in a room with a terrace and it was fantastic. It was such great value for the high standard and the staff were very friendly. The taxis to and from the airport are cheap and there is a tram stop really near the hotel which is a great way to see the city. Lisbon is so easy to get around on foot and there is also a metro. I could not fault this hotel. When I read reviews the only negative said to be early for breakfast as the food would be gone and while this seems to be true, the staff asked us if we would like anything when we were late one morning. The rooms are completely quiet I did not hear any noise whatsoever from any other guest and as a really nice touch some port was left in the room. I am just looking forward to going back.

Though it is a good location to see the castle and the church, its top of the hill location makes it inconvenient to around especially at night. The cable car stops after around 9:30pm and you certainly will need a cab to get back to the hotel. I would suggest staying there a portion of your stay in Lisbon to get the nice views and easy access to the Alfama and Castle area.

This is a great hotel: beautiful design, very clean, spacious rooms, friendly and helpful staff. The location is good; a 10 minute walk from the center of town. It's on the top of a steep hill, but we didn't mind the exercise. The hotel is close to the very charming Alfama neighborhood where we ended up having most of our meals in tiny, rustic cafes and restaurants. On the other side of the hill, closest to the Olisippo hotel, is the Mouraria neighborhood. This is a poor area, but we never felt unsafe and even had some nice walks in the charming alleys that sometimes turn into stairs.

We very much enjoyed staying in the Olissippo but the hotel is not easy to reach with a bigger car like a station car. A well placed hotel for visiting the castle and surrounding area. Easy, quick and cheap tram journey into centre of town. Not many bars and restaurants nearby - plenty in the town centre of course. Fantastic views over Lisbon. If we visited again we would request a room with a terrace as there is not really anywhere to sit outside. The Hotel Olissippo Castelo is ideally situated for people who want to explore the Alfama district of Lisbon. The room was very spacious, clean and comfortable. The staff was extremely helpful and knowledgeable. A great stay, overall. We loved this hotel. The staff were excellent and helpful; the room was large and clean and very comfortable. On arriving there was wine and cookies in our room. The strongest reason I'd recommend this hotel is for the LOCATION! It's on top of a hill in an old part of Lisbon (Alfama) and has a MILLION$ view! You can also see breathtaking sunset and sunrise over the city. Front-desk service is courteous but not very efficient. There was no offer or service for luggage so be prepared to carry your own weight! Breakfast food items are not replenished so don't be late! Also we couldn't even get coffee when we had to catch an early flight home the last morning! I still recall the small hotel in Athens, Greece which brought us a FULL breakfast tray to our room at 4AM when we had to catch an early flight!

I had booked a twin room and we were given a suite - we had a full lounge area and beautiful terrace overlooking Lisbon. We enjoyed out hotel room so much we stayed in on Saturday night and stayed until 12pm checkout. The only downside was the room service food was below average and they did not restock the breakfast buffet so you had to get in early if you wanted choice. The hotel was located high on the hills, I found it quite tricky navigating into town as the streets are very windy and not well sign-posted and the maps aren't as detailed as they need to be.

I expected the hotel to provide at least one computer with Internet access for holidaying guests. Not everyone on holidays carries a laptop. I also found the darkness at the lift lobby (first floor) unsettling. Although the lights came on as soon as motion was detected the first impression wan not welcoming. One small light would not cost too much to run, and would improve the feeling on first getting out of a lift.

My wife and I had a very enjoyable stay at this hotel. If you have not been to this hotel before we recommend you take a taxi as it can be difficult to find. A taxi costs approximately 15 Euros (with luggage charge), from the airport. The hotel is on a hill near the castle, there are a lot of narrow cobbled streets around this area - good walking shoes are recommended.

Me and my wife (italians) had a beatiful stay in Olissipo; I cannot forget the "bienvenido aperitivo" with Porto wine at the welcome in the hotel! Very nice is the view of the town and, generally, the atmosphere is fascinating. Some disadvantage to reach the hotel at the top of Alfama, but also at night taxis cost few euros. I strongly suggest Olissipo to spend vacation in Lisboa.

Our suite was spacoius and very comfortable, but the beds were much too hard. The hotel is quiet and nice, and we had a great view of the city from our terrace. An Internet computer available for the guests would have been nice. It's a steep climb from the city to the hotel, but we quickly learnt to use the trams. Our reservation for 3 persons via Venere.com did not show the price with the extra bed, but that's not the hotel's fault. Venere is to blame, but we had to pay 30 Euro extra per night.

Room service was excellent and cheap, not to forget the very good wine we had. The quick way to city center is down the stairs, and not along the tram line as we were told. A place we can recommend is the small outdoor cafe on top of the hill that can be seen from the hotel.

We had a gorgeous view of the city from our balcony. The breakfast was excellent- a good way to fuel up for climbing up and down all the hills. The only - very small - issue was the lack of a front desk clerk at times. The clerk would approach after a short while, probably seeing us on a camera or something from the back room. We saw this same thing with other guests as well.

The Hotel Olissippo Castelo is an exceptional hotel with an exceptional staff. They went beyond industry standards to make us comfortable. The rooms were well appointed and spacious. The price was was the least we paid on this trip and the hotel was the finest. I would give it ten gold stars!

The patio outside the room offered fantastic views of the city, the river and the Alfama district. The room was very comfortable with lots of closet space and spacious bathroom. The staff were helpful in answering questions. (The restaurant staff had limited English skills but the others were fluent in spanish and english.) Very close to Castelo do Sao Jorge. Be prepared for lots of up and down walking. Would not have felt comfortable walking alone at night as the streets are dark and narrow. However, the area has alot of old world charm. The breakfast buffet was very good and varied.

The location is perfect as it is so close to the castle. The staffs are all friendly & kind to all of my families. The up&down to approach from the city might be a bit tough for some people, not for ourselves.

The room was just marvellous, sitting room with 2 armchairs and a sofa and a separate aera for the double bed. Wonderful panorama. Welcome drink (Portwine) on the table when I came back in the evening. SUPER. It was my first stay at Hotel Olissippo Castelo.

We stayed 2 nights. Olissippo is everything claimed, clean, quiet, comfortable and friendly. Terrace was nice although you have to stand on tip toes to se the view from the first floor rooms. Hotel is in a nice area by the castle and the walk into town is great via the Miradouro de Santa Caterina (good coffee from the kiosk). There is a fantastic restaurant close by Resto du Chapito. We ate in both the Tapas bar outside and the formal restaurant..fantastic views, food and atomsphere! Don't miss this one

A superb "boutique" hotel, but I can comment only on the "superior" rooms. I did not see their "regular" rooms. The only "fault" is the location. It edges on a very rough area, from which we were urged away by the local police -- during the daytime -- when changed trams there to visit a local shop. We did walk safetly through this area in daylight, and perceived no threats. On the other hand, perhaps that is the price paid for truly outstanding vistas from our room...and you can walk in the other direction without a problem! Excellent, free "American" breakfast...on equal par with the one served (on the same trip) in our Paris hotel at a cost of 17 Euros each! One warning for anyone planning to visit Portugal, however... While we can't speak to the beds other than at the Olissippo and at a condo we used the following week in the Algarve, the beds in Portugal seem to be exceptionally HARD. At both locations, we woke up feeling bruised!

Olissippo Castelo is the only place I will stay in Lisbon from now on. Right from the opening welcome at the front desk to check-out, the service was friendly and welcoming. The room was wonderful with a terrace overlooking the valley and the price very reasonable. The breakfast (included in the price) was also first rate. Try the portugese custard tarts which were still warm from the bakery.

I cannot even write over Olissipo Castelo as once my family and I (including a 3 year old girl) struggled all our way up to the hotel premises we found out that we did not even have a room in that hotel and that we should go to Olissipo Oriente near the airport to have one, i.e. my ratings above are for Olissipo Oriente instead.

Wonderful location. Wonderful location. Very quite and peaceful. Two old tram lines pass at end of street to bring you to city centre. Magic trip through old streets every time. The hotel was very clean. The breakfast was tasty and plentiful.

A very nice and cosy place. The only possible disadvantage is location on the hill. The way to the hotel might be rather tiring for elderly people. Still the location is very quiet, the air is very fresh and the rooms are really good. Rooms on the upper floors have good views.

A recommander ++++++

Ottimo hotel situato proprio sotto il castello, con il tram elettrico 12 o con il 28 si arriva in poco tempo nella zono bassa della città. Splendida la vista dal terrazzo. Comodissimo il garage.

This is a very nice hotel where everyone was nice and friendly and is well situated up on the hill and close to lots of the sites (provided you don't mind the uphill getting home, although there is the tram that takes you most of the way). Only downside was that upon arrival we were given a small room without a terrace contrary to what we had reserved. The hotel staff couldn't change us right away but changed our room the next day without a fuss. We arrived quite late but half an hour before the room service was supposed to end, however, we were told it was closed which was a little frustrating. If you plan to have a car, try and reserve a space for your stay before you get there (EUR10 a day) because the garage is very small and on street parking is very tight. It is perhaps a little far from the night hotspots but it's a nice walk.

Staff were very helpful. Streets around the hotel are steep so be prpared for some exercise. We were a litle wary about walking around the area near the hotel at night but no problems arose.

Excellent peaceful location with lovely views but a bit of a climb if on foot. Recommend the bedrooms with terrace - quite spacious, with loungers. Hotel staff are friendly and helpful and the breakfasts are good, although at peak times slight delay in clearing tables. The action in Bairro Alto is an amazing switch-back tram-ride away (consider buying a tram/metro pass).
