The hotel has the nicest welcoming I've ever seen - with welcome drinks including Porto wine, and very friendly personnel! The welcome drinks are somewhat needed, after a short (<5 min) but steep climb from the subway station. The breakfast buffet was very rich, and of good quality. The hotel facilities are all pretty new, and the lobby is quite big for a small hotel as such. The staff was very very friendly

With an arm chair or two - there is space enough - you will also have the possibility to read a news paper or book in the hotel room. We were very pleased and satisfied with the service.

Very friendly and helpful staff. Excellent choice for breakfast, but the coffee was poor. The hotel was in a very quiet street, but it lacked the Bairro Alto atmosphere we expected (that said, it was mid-February). The address seemed to be more in Rato than Bairro Alto.

Stayed 6 nights in hotel. Very good location with main sights and public transport within easy walking distance. Some good local eating places close by. Hotel at top of steep hill but Lisbon is hilly anyway. Staff were very helpful and friendly. The cleanliness of the rooms was good. Excellent choice for breakfast. The only downside was the noise level. I found the noise from the lift shafts annoying and asked to be moved. I was moved to a bigger room at the front of the hotel which suffered from traffic noise and refuse collection in the early hours.A lot will depend on how light a sleeper you are.

Nice place where we have been glad to return. Very kind staff, heplful even in night with the needs of our little kid; nice rooms with pleasant sight over the city; very reasonable fare with the offer that we could get at the moment, and with a small unexpected additional discount for paying cash. Location at walking distance of many interesting places and with several cafés, restaurants, and other services (as a chemist) relly close.

Decent quality for what you pay for - but this was a real cheap bargain so my expectations weren't high. The rooms were decent, loads of channels on the TV. The bath was tiny but I wasn't expecting much. There was an older member of staff who was extremely helpful and friendly but on another day I encountered a younger member of staff who was abrupt, verging on rude. The staff spoke excellent English and even very good French and some Spanish. The breakfast was so-so, quantity vs quality. There was quite a lot of noise, but that comes with choosing a hotel in this lively neighbourhood. A word of caution though: a local did caution me against walking around alone in that part of Bairro Alto at night as there was the risk of crime. As we were traveling in a group, I felt very safe but if you were a lady or an elderly person, you may want to exercise caution in this regard.

This is a nice, small hotel well situated for touristing. If you are driving a car, be carefull: it is very hard to get to the hotel since Lisbon streets are not equal and the transit diffiers one block from another. Also, on one end this street is a precipice and you want to go to the other end, very hard to find. The people don´t help you easily Once at the hotel, it is very easy to move walking around and the people at the hotel is very friendly. It has 4 or 5 parking spaces, so you have to leave your keys, so they can move your car. No problem for that.

I chose this hotel because of the overall good score it got. I had spent the week in a four-star Hotel in Lisboa (Sana Lisboa Hotel, definitely a recommendation here) and was therefore somewhat spoiled. I knew this hotel would probably not be quite as good but for a difference in price of only 25 Euros per night I expected a lot more than what I actually found. The welcome was nice I was taken up to my room. It was then at the very beginning that I realized how small the place was. The elevator was so small I could barely fit in. The staircase was so narrow that only one person could walk and better not suffer from claustrophobia. My room (#11) was on the first floor right next to the elevator (great!). The bed filled almost the whole room. The space between the bed and the outer edges of the room was barely enough to walk. The room had a closet which was half occupied by the minibar. The rest was not really usable, besides maybe putting a bag in. The minibar had beer (the good local super bock) and the usual stuff in it. Expensive though. The bed was ok but had strange dimensions. I guessed the total length to about 1.9m, which is not exactly big and not the size of the described queen size one. But they had to fit it in the room after all. The view from my room was practically non-existent. The air-condition was ok and had a remote control. A flat screen TV was also available but reception on most channels sucked. The bathroom was ok but besides from the nice-looking stone walls pretty cheap. You could hear the traffic outside through the ventilation shaft. So much for the quality of the room. The big minus for this stay goes to the location of the room itself. It was very noisy at night, the door of the room did practically not help to filter anything. Every word spoken downstairs at the front desk could be heard. Furthermore, early in the morning the food was delivered, which again made quite a racket. Getting another room was not possible due to the hotel being completely booked out. The clerk suggested a room in a hotel right next to the airport. How intelligent is that? Breakfast was tourist cheap standard. Again the room was crowded and much too small for my opinion. The food was eatable, the buns were oddly tasting and of strange consistency. Wi-Fi internet was available for free, which was good. I did not use any of the other services. So – bottom line: If you are really ok with noise during most of the night or have well-working earplugs and don´t need real comfort like really good breakfast and spacious rooms, this is your kind of place. For everyone else I recommend spending a little extra for a lot more comfort. Go to the Sana Lisboa, which is a really great deal compared to the Botanico.

Good location - close to the Avenida de Liberdade where is a bus stop to the airport (# 44,45,shuttle, very convinient, about 2 euro), to Bairro Alto, Rossio. Very friendly and welcoming staff. Great rich breakfast - 5 euro per person(optional for us). Room was big enough for two people and clean. Nice bathroom. We enjoyed. Thank you! We will be back!

Don't stay on the first (second) floor in the front. The garbage is picked up at 2 a.m., then the dogs start barking in the street at 4 a.m. After I was moved to the back of the hotel, I had a much quieter night, although one of my windows wouldn't lock, and I was uncomfortable with that. The staff was very helpful, and the breakfast good.

This hotel gave very good value for money. Botanico is ideally placed for on-foot sightseeing and has recently been refurbished to a good, modern standard. Externally, the hotel doesn't look much but inside it was all that we had hoped for and more. Staff were most helpful, informative and friendly, breakfasts were excellent, a complimentary safe in the room was a real bonus and the welcome drinks and eats were much enjoyed. We travelled from the airport by the airport shuttle bus. It would be helpful to people not as fit as us to be told that the last 200 metres to the hotel is up a steep, cobbled street. The street map to guide us there wasn't brilliant though we did manage to use it to find the place in the end.

We stayed at the Botanico for 3 nights and found it to be in an excellent location with easy access to all of the various interesting tourist areas in Lisbon - an easy walk up the nearby steps to the Barrio Alto and a 5 minute walk down to the Baixa. The staff were very courteous and helpful, breakfast was good, internet was free. Great value for money.

I had read all the promising reviews of the hotel and was confident booking. Anyway arriving via a brisk climb to the hotel the staff were as previously stated - fantastic. Full of kindness and knowledge. Location was brilliant with an amazing Veggie restaurant and Jazz Club within 100 metres !! Barrio Alto and the main boulevard/ shopping district within 5 minutes walking too. Breakfast was so-so but mainly because there was no toast and a lot of meat! The room we were given was a fantastic corner room with the sun coming in and a view to relish. All staff day and night were equally lovely and helpful. Only wish i had longer there. Overall - truly a little gem.

The room was comfortable, air-conditioned and clean. We especially enjoyed the TV reception because there were several TV channels that were subtitled for Portuguese but broadcast in English (very unusual). The buffet breakfast was generous and included a hot breakfast (scrambled eggs, bacon) as well as cereal, fruit, juice, coffee and cold cuts. The hotel is located uphill and there is no way to get to it without climbing. One evening there was noise outside from a group of people singing or chanting on the street. It went on for over an hour and we never knew why they were there. The metro is located downhill and is a healthy walk away. The streets are confusing and it is important to get clear directions from the desk. However, the reception was very helpful and friendly and we enjoyed our stay.

We had a great weekend in Lisbon and this hotel was great for our needs. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful- they had a complimentary drink when we arrived, umbrellas for us when it rained and offered to call us cabs, suggest things to see, etc. The breakfast was nice as well. Overall, it was definitely a good experience. We've stayed in places much more expensive and were not nearly as pleasant.

The hotel was clean and in excellent condition. The staff was attentive, friendly and helpful. The breakfast buffet offered a good vairiety of choices. I had a room next to the elevator, and although I could hear it when in operation, it was not a significnt disturbance. Noise on the street was more of a problem, but not unbearable. Convenient to public transporation, with the metro blue line a couple hundred meters away. It is a short walk to Bairro Alto (up the stairs near the hotel)and great views of the city. The hotel is mostly uphill from the metro stop, which was a little more effort than I preferred at the end of the day. Excellent value for the price.

A good location, just off the main Avenida da Liberdade. Lots of places to eat nearby. Easy walking distance to the heart of Lisbon, but would not suit those who cannot walk up the hill to the hotel, which is quite steep. Great views from the room across Lisbon. Staff very welcoming - could not do more for us on our arrival. Car parking directly outside the hotel for those with a hire car. Altogether, thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would definitely return to the hotel next time we are in Lisbon.

We had a nice stay in Lisbon but the hotel did not quite meet our expectations. The room was very loud due to two big elevators going up and down all the time. The breakfast room is actually locatet in the soutterain, which is not quite nice. The breakfast was ok, but nothing special really. The hotel per se need some improvements, especially in the common areas which are quite unconfortable. However, the location is very good. We could reach in few minutes the city center and the very nice Bairo Alto area. Overall we would only recommend it for a short stay and only if you plan to enjoy the city and not hotel amenities.

We were very pleased that the hotel lived up to expectations - it was a simple, clean and a well run hotel with a good breakfast. Paulo on reception was very helpful & informative. After a day of walking, we found the best way of getting back to the hotel was to use the elevator Gloria & then it was approx. a 5 minute walk down hill to the hotel. The CD player in the room was a nice touch & as we had taken some CDs with us, it was very relaxing listening to music as we got changed to go out for a meal in the evening. Although we are not vegetarian, we had 2 most enjoyable & reasonably priced meals at the vegatarian restaurant across the road from the hotel. The building has been nicely restored & the staff were very pleasant & helpful. The hotel recommended we should visit the Restaurant Casa de Fados to hear Fado music. The music was most enjoyable but the food was expensive & most disappointing. We had 2 main courses, 2 espresso coffees, a bottle of ordinary wine & a bottle of water & our bill was E107 which included E14 of service charges. The waiters seemed more interested in the music than in doing their job & I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone & needless to say, we would not return. On the old trams there are signs warning about pickpockets & my husband had first hand experience of this when we were getting off the tram at the castle. They removed his wallet from his trouser pocket, took the E50 & then handed him his wallet back complete with the 2 Lisboa cards still in it having told him he had dropped it! It wasn't until we were just about to pay for coffee that he realised his money had gone & luckily we had spare money at the bottom of our rucksack. Even luckier, my husand's credit cards were in a separate wallet in a separate pocket for which we were very grateful.

Family break with two teenage children in two rooms. Helpful staff pleasant hotel with nice breakfast. Only downgraded the quietness of the room as we had a pigeon on the ledge outside our window cooing each morning. Smaller hotel feel. Have to agree with all the positive reviews. This is a great value hotel (we paid 60 Euros per night) which is close to all the major attractions. Breakfast was terrific and the reception staff were most welcoming. The room was spotlessly clean and the flat screen TV was a nice touch. Botanico was excellent value and convenient for most places of interest in Lisbon. The approach to the hotel is uphill but Lisbon is a hilly city and if you mean to walk around you will have to climb far steeper. Only one note of warning - rubbish is collected (noisily!)at about 2 in the morning so try to get a room to the side and/or on an upper floor.

Very nice staff, excelent service and value. Amacing how many languages the staff managed. Will recomend this hotel to everybody (except the realy obeese who can´t manage the walk uphill) Many small local restaurants realy close if you don´t want to head for the "bairro alto" (but its actualy also realy close...) Nice breakfast, with a wide choise: different breads and rolls, cakes, croissants, eggs, bacon, ham, 3 - 4 different chesses, butter (both with and without salt)jam (3-4 kinds - sometimes even diet version) , yoghurts, cereals (4 kinds) fresh fruits, juices (althoug more of the lemonade-kind - not real fresh fruit juices), cold and hot milk, coffee tea and all the things I forgot.... exelent!

Room itself is basic but adequate, quiet and neat. Carpet and furnishings oldish and with a somewhat weird smell. Staff extremely helpful and courteous. Excellent breakfast included with room. The Botanico is in an excellent location within walking distance of The Barrio Alto, Rua de Liberdade, the waterfront, many restaurants, cafes, bars, & shops. It is at the top of a hill, but by Lisbon standards not a particularly steep one. The breakfast is excellent with a nice variety of items. My room was spacious, comfortable, and clean. I loved the lounge as it is somewhat funky and a nice place to access the wifi or have a coffee. Kudos to the staff who were wonderful--efficient, friendly, accomodating, and made great recommendations. I really enjoyed my stay at the hotel and visiting such a lovely, vibrant city. One thing to note is that sometimes late-night noise from the street can be heard in the rooms. It wasn't nonstop or a big issue for me as I expect some street noise when staying in a large city (always travel with earplugs.) The hotel represents good value for Lisbon and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it.

Is a 5 star at a 3 star price! Front desk - always pleasantly helpful. Rooms compact but recently tastefully upgraded to make best use of space - with quality CD player/flat screen TV with over 40+ channels. Breakfast buffet among best seen in 4 Europa trips. Ideal location in quaint Lisbon neighborhood & for 10 minute walk to Baixa & Barrio Alto. [Easy to Find: Airport Bus - exit Avenida Liberdade stop or Blue Line Metro at Avenida - Head short distance toward Hotel Sofitel on Avenida / 1st right - 2 blocks or so - uphill yes, but downhill when leaving & means some great room views!] All in all - a gem of a little hotel!

Very good quality/price ratio.... If you do not avoid to walk 10-15 min. very good location. The restaurants advised by the hotel staff are very good.

The hotel offered excellant value for €52 for a douuble room and breakfast, on the 1st night, even at €60 when we returned 6 days later it was still very good value. Bit if noise at about 0200 when bins being emptied, not sure if this was just the Tuesday night as didn't hear on the prev Wednesday.

We may have been lucky in the room we got because it wasn't near the lift shafts (there are 2) so we didn't get any noise from them. All in all it was a very pleasant stay! I would have no problem in recommending the hotel.

The staff was absolutely magnificent. Breakfast was more than we expected; also great service. Very clean hotel, and I recommend it to anyone looking for adequate accommodations. The view from our room was beautiful, overlooking the city central (the historical section of Lisbon). Very close to the main avenue, easy access to taxis and tour buses. Above all, we loved the staff!

Six of us stayed in this little gem of a hotel and thoroughly enjoyed it. It is a great location, the hill could be daunting for older people but we just thought of the calories we were losing! Staff extremely helpful, rooms not exactly luxurious but all you need and well fitted out. Would certainly stay again.

Very good hotel - refurbished. Very well located, but uphill the last 200 meters. Noisy during the night - from the street.

An excellent start to our recent holiday in Portugal. Botanico was the friendliest and best value out of 8 hotels we stayed in and the breakfast was easily the best.

First time to Lisbon, stayed seven nights.Hotel well positioned for walking around the city, close to metro for going further afield. Rooms clean and tidy with air conditioning, good breakfast to start the day. Paulo and Ricardo on the reception desk were excellent with info on places of interest and how to get there, whether walking or using the metro, trams or trains. A very enjoyable stay

All reviews of hotel were accurate and the staff were excellent. Breakfast choice was wide including cooked and fresh pastries. Although we did not have time to go ourselves, there is a good jazz club 40 metres from the hotel, according to what we could hear from the street. Many restaurants are 7 minutes walk from the hotel that offer a wide selection of cuisine. We had a fantastic meal at an Italien restaurant, located where most of the restaurants are situated at a reasonable rate, the kitchen is located at the front of the restaurant. There is a great little fish restaurant that serves freshly caught fish, used by the locals. Located in Belem opposite the carridge museum towards the river. Don't be put off by the exterior, meals for 8 euros or less.

Welcome was great. Even greater were the exact information on trams, museums, beach, restaurants. The room was truly small and a bit difficult to walk inside, when all the time you had to give way to your spouse. Bathroom had bad design: The smells of using it wandered to the sleeping room. There were not adequate space for used towels and no reasonable method to dry one's petty laundry.

Having researched the location of dozens of hotels choosing the Botanica was a hit!!. 2 mins walk from the Avendia da Liberdade (but steep, not ideal for disabled) Close to Metro and bus stops and only 3/4 mins to town centre and shopping areas. Staff great, breakfasts great!!! Will stay again.

The hotel is OK, but more far away from the center than expected. Specially due to the slopes it makes a bit difficult to reach at night.

Very good hotel (quality and price), staff very kind and friendly, very good breakfast, very good location (5 minutes on foot from Restauradores/Rossio). It exceeds our standard. We strongly suggest this hotel.

Excellent breakfast with great variety, fresh fruits even with delicious ananas slices and pasteis de nata! Warm welcome at reception desk. Well centered and quiet enough. Our room was a little small perhaps because it was the last one. We might go back

Friendly and helpful staff. The room was clean and comfortable. The hotel is located on a hill close to a subway station (5 min). It's about a 10 minutes walk to Rossio so it is not too far from a lot of the tourist attractions. The breakfast was plentiful (including fresh fruit).

Dear Fellow Lisboa travelers. I just really wanted to write a comment about this hotel. This hotel was more than a pleasant experience for my best friend and I. Everything that was written about this hotel was true and accurate. Downtown lisbon is about a 10 minute walk (Wear comfortable shoes since the streets are slippery made or rocks). The service and attendants were so helpful. I spoke to them in English and Spanish and they were just as helpful in both. They really care that your experience in Botanica is pleasant. They were able to give us tour packages there at the hotel and always gave us necessary information about the city. One minor detail...the shower and bathroom is small.. but who cares.. you shouldn't be there too long. I strongly recommend this hotel for your stay. When in Lisbon ...one must go to CaisCais. Don't forget to visit the beaches. There is a great ITalian restuarant called Valentinos in the first plaza that you hit coming down Hotel Bontanico. I suggest you book this hotel with not second thought. I don't say this about too many hotels.

I was extremely impressed in my recent visit to the Botanico Hotel. Hotel is very well located and all main attractions are easily accessed by foot. All the Hotel staff really made a big impression on me - infact I have never encountered such a great bunch of people! They really made me feel at home while on my business trip. The welcome was really warm. Ricardo who was on front desk at times made a big impression - always helpful, friendly and genuinely interested in the guests. The breakfast was excellent with everything you can imagine available. Even one morning I was late and I was looked after and was told its not a problem. In fact the impression I got from all the staff was that nothing was a problem. My room was great with mod conveniences and wireless broadband. I most definitely will be back to this Hotel.

Very accommodating & helpful staff. Excellent (included) breakfast. If on your own and walking from the nearby metro, it's a little difficult to find, even with a map--although it's just a few uphill blocks off the main Ave. Liberdade. We would certainly stay there again, but would ask for a bed with a softer mattress (ours was rather like a board!).
