The Mary was in a perfect position for us. We used it as our base to go to the Cinque Terra. The staff are great and will do any thing for you. The city of La Spezia is a wonderful place to wander through and has a great open market. very nice home away from home feel.

This hotel is right by the train station which is a plus to be able to see Cinque Terre, Portofino and other close cities. It is on an extrememly noisy street with scooters, buses and cars whizzing by at all hours. Not great if you are a light sleeper. Breakfast was pretty good with a variety of selections. The area around the hotel did not feel very safe after dark. Room was spacious and you could actullay get into the shower easily which can be a feat in Italy:) If you stay here ask for a room in the back. Walls are also very thin so you can hear EVERYTHING in the room next door.

If you only plan to use La Spezia as your gateway to Cinque Terre and only sleep in this hotel, it's OK, and definitely very conveniently located very near to the train station. The bathroom floor had not been cleaned very well before I got in the room, and it didn't get better during my stay. The rooms could definitely use some alround TLC... everything just looks old and neglected. The closet was a DIY, which is OK, but I always had to open the drawer beneath the doors to get them open, adn that was a little annoying - and could be a source of injury. Thw walls are rather thin, adn I could hear the conversations in the room next door quite clearly. There's a reason they haven't posted any pictures of the rooms... The breakfast buffet was pretty decent. you have to get a code from the reception to use the wi-fi and it's good for only 10 cummulative hours, which was a little weird, but the connection was good the entire time. Overall a decent place to stay if you're on a budget and will only be using it as a place to sleep.

Since it is literally across the street from the train station in La Spezia, this is a great place to stay if you want to visit Cinqueterre (takes maybe 10-15 minutes on the train, and you can buy a pass for unlimited train use and visiting the park at the station in La Spezia before you leave), but at a more reasonable cost and without having to climb any terrible stairs to get to finally drop off your bags. The room and beds were nothing special, but reasonable. And the breakfast was pretty great, with lots of options. All in all a very good place to stay if visiting the Cinqueterre region.

We stayed in a double room with bathroom. The hotel is very close to the La Spezia train station which was ideal for a late night train arrival (11.30pm) and they were still very much open and operating when we arrived. I say this because at other hotels we seemed to be annoying the staff arriving late in the evening. Value for money is a bit tough. We paid 90 Euro for our room which was basic. It was quite a lot for a basic room however all other hotels in the area were very expensive as well so this is probably a good deal for the area. The breakfast buffet was very good - a lot of range of breads, pastries, eggs, cold meats, cereal, juices and hot drinks. I would recommend this hotel to people wanting to do the Cinque Terre as all C.T. trains run to the La Spezia station. Overall, it was an easy fuss-free place to stay.

Hotel Mary is located just a short walking distance from La Pezia’s train station from which you are able to make day trips to the Cinqueterre towns and Portofino. Downtown, the shopping district and the bus stop to Portovenere are all very close to the hotel as well. The rooms are clean, quiet and comfortable. The hotel offers free Wi-Fi and breakfast that includes: cereal, yogurt, pastries, juice, milk, coffee and tea. The staff is cordial and happy to help. It was a great stay for the price. I would recommend it to people who want to use La Spezia as a base to visit Cinqueterre, Portofino of Portovenere.

La Spezia isn't a great area to stay in- it's expensive considering what it has to offer. It is not a touristic town- very few restaurants, not much to see or do. All hotels in the area were priced much higher than we found anywhere else in Italy and the town didn't have anything to offer. Wireless internet did not work in the room (4th floor) but was available in the lobby lounge area. The room was spacious and clean. Bathroom newly renovated.

This is the perfect hotel for access to the Cinque Terre. It is right across the street from the train station on the line through the Cinque Terre. This is the second time we've stayed at the Mary and it is as good as before. It has a full breakfast including hardboiled eggs, meat and cheese besides all the normal Italian breakfast fare. I highly recommend it.

This was an easy walk from the train station--the staff (believe owners) were very accommodating/helpful and aimed to please. Internet available 24/7 and they offered a great selection for breakfast. Also near to center of town for shopping/restaurants. Took the local train to Cinque Terre daily. Definitely would stay again.

For the prices, this hotel was kind of a dreary, dingy and outdated. The front desk staff spoke no English. The room was spacious however, and the location is excellent for accessing the train to Cinque Terre, Florence and Pisa. If you can, try staying in one of the towns in the Cinque Terre instead of La Spezia.

This hotel is extremely close to the train station. It is the perfect location if you would like to visit Cinque Terre. It is literally across the street.

This is a great location if you are traveling from here to the Cinque Terra. It is directly across from the train station. You don't get more convivent than that. It was a very friendly hotel, the guys at the front desk were helpful, spoke English (always a plus!), and the breakfast was great! I would highly recommend this. It did seem a bit pricey, but I have to say that most of the other things in this area were too, so maybe its just the area. The breakfast had breads, cheese, lots of juice choices, milk, coffee, etc. Which ever way you cut it, this was a great hotel. They even had a computer with free internet! That was awesome too. Perfect if you need easy access to the train.

Everything is very good. Room is big and clean with all the basic facilities. One common Internet point is provided. But one has to give and take between close proximity to the railway station and quietness. The noise from the road adjacent is at an acceptable level. The owners were so kind to take care of my luggage free of charge till very late at night even though I was their customer for 1 night 3 days ago.

It is the first time I stayed at Hotel Mary and also the first time I spent a night in La Spezia. I was there with my wife for a short vacation, by train. So that the distance of the hotel from the station was important. The cost of the room is not probably high compared with other hotels in the city. Nevertheless for that price my expectations were a little bit higher.

The only, repeat, the only good thing about this place is its location - about 2 min from the train station. Very convenient when visiting cinque terre. Everything else is pretty bad. This is NOT the 3 star hotel they claim they are - 2 stars max maybe even 1.5. Dirty, shower leaks, towels look as if they have never been washed, smell of fried fish everywhere, ans so on and so forth.

We stayed for only one night, and used La Spezia as a hopping point to visit the Cinque Terre. This hotel is conveniently located near the station, but we had to carry our luggages down flights of stairs (the station is on a higher ground - approximately at the same level as the 3rd floor of the hotel). At 90 euros per night, this was the highest price we paid among all the hotels we stayed during our 12 days in Italy.

The location was great for La Spezia, literally righ across from the train station, as most people travel to the Cinque Terre and don't stay in La Spezia for long. One of the employees was a bit creepy, but he was only there once on our 3 day stay, and the other man there was very very helpful. Breakfast was decent, pastries, bread, coffee, tea, even cereal, etc. The walls are paper thin though, which sucks when you have loud neighbors.

Location near train station is the only really redeeming value to this hotel. I'd rate it a two star only because of the location next to the station. In all other regards it's a long way from a three star and two stars is very generous. The breakfast is very poor. It really appears that the place might just collapse from lack of care.

The hotel is pleasant enough and it is convenient for the station but it is away from the nicer parts of the town if you want to stroll around and see the sights or visit the bars and restraunts in the pedestrian squares or the sea front. The Mary was a perfect accomodation for people wanting to travel to Cinque Terre but unable to find reasonable or available accomodations in Cinque Terre. The front desk people were very helpful and they spoke good English. There is a lot of traffic noise so bring earplugs if that is a concern. The train station is across the street (there is a large wall and stairs going down before you can reach the hotel). The room was very spacious and clean. The breakfast was generous including cereal, juices, fresh croissants, coffees, breads/crackers and yogart. There was a large area in which to eat. When you arrive make sure to check the train schedule for times going to Cinque Terre; there weren't too many availible in the a.m. So you'll want to time it right. Once you get there you can walk to all of the towns (a full days travel plan) or take the trains inbetween towns). We also ate in LaSpezia, there are many restaurants just a short walking distance from the hotel.

Clean hotel well located near the train station (just across the road). But it's also on what seems to be the main road through the town...even though we were on the 3rd floor, it felt like we were sleeping out on the street, such was the noise. It was so loud and never stopped all night. So thank God we were only there for 1 night. The hotel did'nt seem to be full so why we were'nt given a room at the back of the hotel is a bit of a mystery - I'm sure they know how noisy it is at the front. Breakfast was average, much smaller selection that other hotels we stayed in in Italy. We stayed here because we were'nt sure if we could get accomm in the village of the Cinque Terre. But there's so many places advertising rooms in the villages, that you should be able to get something sorted. La Spezia is a quiet town - we were there on a Saturday night but there was'nt a lot going on. The hotel is near the main pedestrian street, and this leads to the sea. A nice walk, especially along the waterfront. But I think the only thing La Spezia has going for it is as a jumping off point for the Cinque Terre.

Our room on the 1st floor gave onto the main street which didn't make the room over quiet! But the windows were double-glazed and as we always travel with a "noise machine" we were able to sleep well. The staff were very helpful and friendly. As the hotel was opposite the railway station this was very convenient as we were travelling by rail which included a visit to the Cinque Terre. The hotel was below the railway and we were not disturbed by rail traffic. The pedestrian shopping area of La Spezia was conveniently only 2 minutes walk away. Good value for money.

The plus was that the Mary is across the road from the railway station. However, that means it is a long walk from the more attractive parts of La Spezia. The staff were friendly enough but unenthusiastic, the room smelt strongly of disinfectant, and the noise and nightly smell of cigarette smoke from neighbouring rooms indicated cheap construction. Breakfast was only basic; in particular, the juice offered was the poorest we received in four similarly rated hotels we stayed in. There was no sign of an internet point, but neither did we ask. How does the Mary get three stars?

Hotel Mary is almost right across the street from the train station, so it's the perfect starting point to explore Cinque Terre from La Spezia. They room was very clean, very spacious (I think they upgraded us to their biggest room). It's also just down the street from La Spezia centro, which is a wonderful place to explore at night. We only had one night here, but it was a very pleasant stay. It is just so close to the train station, which suited us as we arrived quite late at night. The staff were very friendly and even made us hot chocolates to drink at 10.30pm. The bed was extremley comfortable and the room we had did not face the main street so was very quiet. I was really disappointed with this hotel. I could not recommend it at all. It is supposed to be 3 stars ... so why did I have an enormous amount of mould in my shower, big shower drainage issues, paper thin (and torn) sheets, staff being noisy outside my room at 6am and unacceptable street noise? I particularly liked the repsonse of the desk clerk when I asked him "Do you have a map of La Spezia which I may have?" ... "Go to the train station, they have them there". Three stars? I strongly disagree. Their offering was very expensive by Italian standards as well. Stay on one of the Cinque Terre instead ... there are lots of options there with a much higher quality. Breakfast was its only redeeming feature ... hot fresh pastry and espresso.

The hotel was quite adequate for the price charged (50 euros), and was just fine for one night's stay on my way to Cinque Terre. The room was quite small and somewhat shabby, though, but location was good - less than 5 min walking to the train station, and right in the middle of the city otherwise (can easily walk to the port as well). We found the personel very unfriendly and the fact that they were doing a rebuilding of the dining room did not help much either! The hotel was therefor overal very dusty, because of the breaking down a wall. Not to mention the noice all the rebuilding gave! We had stayed in a two-star hotel in Genoa in the days before and that was much, much beter!!

The closeness to the train station is a real plus. Parking is on street, but had no problem finding it. The hotel is run by Mary herself, and her son Claudio who speaks English. It was a great little hotel. Has an elevator. Optional dinner for 13 Euro was a good deal. Very friendly staff. I have recommended this hotel to friends staying in La Spezia, especially if using it as a jumping off point to the Cinque Terre.

Very helpful staff. I noted that I would arrive by late train (02:00) and there was a desk clerk waiting to meet me in spite of the late hour.

Suberb location for train and Cinque Terre (8 mins on train to Rio). Modern, clean, good-size rooms. Excellent shower, new air-con, comfy queen-size bed. Traffic noise blocked out well with windows closed. Good continental breakfast. Large lounge areas with TV & video downstairs too with video hire next door. Overall very comfortable 2 nights.

I felt this was not a 3 star hotel. It was old. the linens were old, thin and threadbare, the rooms drab and bare, no picture, nothing. The bathroom light was out for 4 days and I ask for a new one many times. The shower leaked on the floor thru the door. The beds were nothing more than rollaways with top mattresses. The telephone in the rooms were rotarty and I was unable to use a phone card from the room, I had to inconveniently get up, get dressed and go downstairs to use the phone at 1 am to call the us at a decent time. The staff could not change out the phone to a touch tone, come on this is 2004, what is rotary dialing????They had no hair dryers available and no electrical converter for me toi use so I could use my own dryer. The staff never told me what restaurants or ammmenities were available to me on premises. The place chronically smelled of cooked seafood. It was quiet and accessably to the train station. I have been to La Spezia many times and I know hotels there and this is not a 3 star location...I will stay at Firenza Contintentale from now on...it is nice for the money and 3 star. Mary is a 2 star location, and needs cleaning up am=nd modernizing to reach a low 3star.

Mary Hotel is conveniently located very close to La Spezia train station, which is ideal for visiting the Cinque Terre. The rooms were comfortable and clean and the hotel staff was helpful and friendly. I´d stay here again.

Although the hotel is clean and the rooms are ok, the running of the hotel is not very professional. We were booked for 3 nights and asked to settle the bill after 2 by one member of staff who also queried our room number when we asked for our key (he thought someone else was in the room!)

The staff is very nice. The breakfast a little meager but satisfying. The room adequate. The location good, right next to train station and major bus connections. Laudramat and inexpensive eateries near by. Overall for the price, services, and location, I would return.

The Mary was well located hotel one street from the train station making it ideal to explore the Cinque Terre from. Although the room suited our requirements for exploring the coast the only problem we had was the difference between the room we expected after seeing the web page photographs and what they actually looked like. The manager i must say was very helpful.

A strange hotel Very noisy. No carpet on the floor, and the noises from the corridor echo alla round. Perfect sound transmission from the room above. Heat does not come on in the wintertime until around 9:00pm so we had a shower and got dried in a VERY cold room. The location of this hotel is good if you are using the train. It's about 5 minutes walk from your room to the train platform. The hotel had a strange unloved feeling about it....

A problem existed in a room wherein the door to the balcany could not lock. We asked that it be repaired, and went out for dinner. When we returned we were told it was repaired; however, it was not.

For the price, this hotel was little better than several (cheaper) 1 star hotels we stayed in. Very convenient for the railway station and only a short walk into town. Rather surly receptionists and a poor breakfast. Clean though, and comfortable

The inside of the hotel is better than the outside. Its big advantange is its closeness to the railway station and therefore the Cinque terre.

Although this hotel does not seem to deserve the 3 star rating because the public areas are a little run down, I have no major complaints. We had a triple room which was spacious and clean with a modern bathroom and strong AC. The best part of the hotel was its location, very near the train station and other shops and restuarants. Parking on the street was cheap and easy. This hotel is nothing to get excited about, but I would consider staying here again for the convenience.

We were surprised to find that the Mary Hotel is right next to the train station. It said that in the reviews, but it turned out to be a huge convenience to us. The breakfast was supurb, the crosants were fresh and flakey. The kids liked the tiny elevator, I took the stairs. It took a minute to figure out the air conditioning, but it was appreciated. This is a great place to stay if you need a place to land when you are on your way to the Cinque Terre.
