The first impression was not a good one as the hotel is located in a very noisy, polluted area. The breakfast was disappointing as they didn't even had real Italian Coffee, unless you ordered one at the bar for which you had to pay extra for. The ceiling of the room was covered with flies (smached to the ceiling)... La Spezia isn't a touristic city and if you're a tourist wanting to discover the area of Liguria/Toscany, it's better to book a hotel elsewere.

we stayed here as a base for Cinque Ports. Cinque Ports were fantastic. This hotel was a good base for us, was clean, the staff pleasant and kind and helpful. But the hotel is old, very tired and in an industrial area. We didnt care much as we just went out to the Cinque Ports all day and just came back to sleep. Dont stay here thinking its plush or a great hotel or you will be sorely disappointed. It also worked out to be the most expensive hotel we stayed at in our 4 week trip around Italy - more exy than Venice and Rome ! - so I felt a little sad about value for money - but this is mostly due to the fact that they had no family rooms left, and we needed 2 separate rooms. breakfast good enough.

Hotel Ghironi is clean but very basic hotel. It is a surprise why it has got 4 stars! Maximum 3 I say. Although our room was clean and the bathroom was rather new and good there was no clue of beautiness and luxury in the room specially the paint of the wall was awfull! It is very far from central station (12 minutes by car) and is located in an industrial area close to harbour with no access to the sea! There is a shuttle service in the hotel which has compensated the low service partly and is very useful. But shuttle stops working after 8pm. So do not come back late!!

This was a great hotel, but the neighborhood was a little scary -- run-down, graffiti everywhere and pretty much deserted, but that meant the room was very quiet, which is a plus. The man at the front desk wasn't friendly or welcoming when we checked in, but, other than that, the stay was very nice. The room exceeded expectations. It was very clean and modern, had nice furniture and a spacious bathroom with marble floors. The air conditioning worked very well, which was not always the case in other hotels we stayed at. Breakfast was excellent.

We really appreciated the helpful staff. The hotel was very clean with very comfortable beds. The breakfast was superb and we thoroughly enjoyed our morning cappuccinos. We were amazed at the hotel's proximity to the Vatican Museum and our family could walk virtually anywhere from the hotel. The hotel also had a couple of versions of tourists maps that we found extremely helpful. It was the final stop on our 2 week vacation and we definitely saved the best for last!!!

I though the hotel was good. The view was not good but it was well located to travel to sites in the surrounding area. Provided you enquire about the movement of the schuttle bus this is OK. On the whole we had an enjoyable stay.

Very spacious room and bathroom. Good value for money - breakfast was included with a good selection of different foods. La Spezia is nothing to write home about but it is a great place to stay if you want to take the train to the Cinque Terre. The staff were very helpful in showing us how to do this.

The bar is far too expensive €4 for a small bottle of beer! The hotel itself is good though, room decor is a little dated and the bar is a tiny add-on to reception. I had a good night's sleep and a good breakfast, so what more can you ask for?

This hotel is not in the town centre, there is a bus but this is not regular. Other people on this site speak of a free shuttle service to the hotel but this was never mentioned to us. A taxi to the station will cost you around 10-15 euros depending on the driver. During our stay there was a funfair directly across the road which played loud music until late. The room was clean but the bed was hard with only one pillow resembling a pancake. Instead of curtains they have come up with the ingenius idea of installing roller-doors on the outside of the windows which are very difficult to use and don't block out all the light anyway. The breakfast was adequate. If you have the misfortune of staying in La Spezia do yourself a favour and choose a hotel which is at least in the town centre - and if you are thinking of going out for dinner on a Saturday night you must make reservations as everywhere we went was full.

Hotel is located right at the end of the highway, on a main street, and behind a shipyard. Not a romantic location. However, to see Cinqua Terra, the hotel provided a shuttle in the morning the the station, tickets, and all the info you needed. An reasonable alternative to seeing the area. Staff was very helpful and friendly.

We were there for 7 nights which was a little too long since we saw everything. The breakfast was assume and the rooms were huge. They always filled my water jug with ice every morning so I could have cold water all day. In order to enjoy our wine they gave us real wine glasses when we asked. Instead of plastic glasses in the room they could use glass ones. Buses were easy to catch and they had the tickets right there. Can take an L or an S bus to get there from the train station which cost .90E. For 3E could ride the buses all day and for 5E could ride the bus to Portavenere and Lerci and all over town which was great. They tried to help us with a long distance phone call but our calling card never did work. When we left my zipper on my carryon broke so they called the handyman and he came with some rope to tie around my bag so at least I was able to get home without everything falling out. Never ran out of breakfast and shuttle to the train station and boat ride which was nice. There was a market not too far away and also several restaurants within walking distance. Would recommend staying there

Hotel staff were extremely helpful in assisting us to make the most of our time in La Spezia. Hotel provided shuttle buses and tour packs associated with touring Cinque Terre's 5 towns. Not the best area for conveniences like shops or restaurants etc. We were disappointed that the local taxi service found it necessary to rip us off by doubling the price when we needed a taxi at 6am to take us to train station.

Staff were very friendly. The breakfast provided lots of selection and the food was good. The facility is older and close to the shipyards which makes it a little out of the way but shuttles are provided to the train station which was close to the market area of the city so very handy. While the hotel has a safe the lack of an in room safe is the only true inconvenience. The national park was amazing and we highly recommend it.

The staff at reception was exceptionally helpful, from restaurant suggestions to information on traveling to the Cinque Terra. The lady at the desk provided detailed maps, bus route information, train ticket information - she could not have been more helpful. Finding the hotel is a little tricky, but not impossible. The only thing that I would change is that the bathrooms could use some updating.

This is a clean wellrun mid size hotel, good food selection at breakfast. They offered a free shuttle to the docks where a Cinque Terre boat departs, worth considering by future guests. The hotel seems to be out of the way with few services nearby, we were frustrated searching for it as we arrived after dark.

The Ghironi is actually off a alley and difficult to locate. It is somewhat remote from the pier and the train station and the shuttle service provided by the hotel was almost never available. So each time you left the hotel or returned it cost about 20 euros for a cab. There is no restaurant in the hotel and few restaurants in the vicinity and restaurant hours are limited. The Mitali was disappointing to say the least. However, two small family restarants nearby were good and reasonable. If choosing La Spezia for a visit to cinque terra, it much wiser to book a hotel near the pier or the train station.

Our family of four chose to stay in La SPezia because we had read it was a convenient place to visit cinque terra from. Initially we thought we had made a mistake in choosing Hotel Ghironi due to its location which is not particularly central to the city centre or the port unless you have a car. Although we did have a car, the Hotel turned out to be great as it provides a free shuttle to and from the port in order to catch the day boat tour to Cinque Terra. The rooms are spacious and clean, the staff friendly and the breakfast is provided. So it turned out that what I had read was true and La Spezia, Hotel Ghironi was an affordable way to visit Cinque Terra. Very pleased with our stay.

I did not quite realize its distance from the train station. More information on the shuttle bus to and from would have been helpful (I had to take a cab). My air conditioning did not work the first night. I would have expected more assistance and follow up - and an offer to discount the first night's rate. I had to press for all of those things. Customer service could have been better.

Free transport to train station for train to cinque terre. Free newspapers in all languages. Free parking. Nice breakfast. Most of the reception staff is friendly and helpfull. Neighbourhood of hotel is not very inspirational but only half hour walk to centre La Spezia with nice shops and restaurants. All rooms have balconies. We got the smallest room near the elevator which was sufficient except for the bathroom which was very small.

Great property for price, location and service. Easy access to the Cinque Terre by train. Very informed staff-very willing to help. This is a perfect hotel for exploring the Cinque Terre, but do not expect much from the city of La Spezia itself, very industrial area. This hotel was easy to access from the Autostrada and had ample parking for our large 9 passenger van. I would choose this hotel again if planning to spend all of my time exploring the villages..not the hotel if you want to enjoy the locale of where you are staying.

The hotel was a bit challenging to find initially but worth the effort. Kathy was fluent in 4 languages & helped make our stay incredible. The rooms were spacious, clean & quiet. A local restaurant (very close to the hotel) - Mitile (spelling??) - specializes in muscles & is MUST. They offer a shuttle to the boat & train stations. The morning breakfast begins at 7:30 & stays stocked throughout the serving period. Overall, the hotel & staff is well worth the stay. We would definitely go back!

Hotel Ghironi is a good spot to visit La Spezia and, specially, Cinque Terre. The hotel is pleasant and staff is very helpful; we had a problem with our rented car, and people from staff helped marvelously. Hotel decoration is very nice: the owner is an art collector. Surroundings are not very turistic, but within walking distance there are two or three very good restaurants. Breakfast at hotel is also very good. I would suggest free internat for costumers, as I´ve found in other hotels. It´s a place to stay again.

The surroundings of the hotel do not cater to tourists, but the downtown area of La Spezia is a short drive away. It is a very convenient location to visit Cinque Terre. The hotel is way too far from the train station. Fortunately, they offer a shuttle to the station but it is not a "on-demand" service. It is only offered in the morning and in the evening but nothing in between. Nothing interesting to see around the hotel besides a huge industrial complex and a freeway! I would only recommend this hotel if you are desperate for a place to stay but stay at a hotel near the train station.

We booked this hotel expecting a 4 star hotel. The rooms (we had three booked) would be lucky to be rated a two star based on North American Standards. The rooms were large, but very old and tired. The location was ok, since the hotel provided a shuttle to the train station for our trip to Cinque Terre. The hotel is situated on the main road exiting the autostrade. The reason for our stay in La Spezia was to be able to take the boat to Cinque Terre. The hotel offered a complimentary shuttle to the boat dock and a return shuttle from the train station. They were most helpful in giving us the information we needed. The area around the hotel was not very attractive and we didn't eat near the hotel---we arrived early enough to have time to drive down to Portavenere for dinner. But the room was very spacious and included an area for doing business in your room---an area as you entered the room had a desk, chair, lamp and WiFi capabilities. The breakfast room was large and the array of food was very nice. The shuttle to the boat dock was right on time and the driver was courteous and helpful.

This hotel was wonderful. The staff were kind and helpful, breakfast was a nice spread, the rooms were spacious and clean. We traveled in Italy, Germany and to Paris, and this was probably the nicest and cheapest hotel we stayed at (Price proabably b/c it isn't a big tourist stop). There was a free shuttle to the train station to see Cinque Terra (which is way we were there). I would definitely stay here again. iMitili was a great restaurant behind the hotel about 100 meters.

The staff was very competent and friendly. The location was not the best, but I knew that going in. La Spezia, in general, is not the greatest city in terms of its beauty and surroundings. The shuttle service to Cinque Terre was very convenient (and free). The rooms were great and the breakfast was one of the best I've ever had in Italy. This is a great hotel if you have a car. Make sure to come in on the Autostrada if you want to find it easily however. It will be on your left side and you will need to make a U-turn after you pass it. If you want to drive around La Spezia, good luck. We spent an hour trying to find the hotel again after we took a little drive to scout out possible restaurants (not many). This city is one of the most poorly designed I've ever seen when it comes to driving (too many one-way streets and industrial zones that dead-end).

Ghironi was a 4-star hotel, on the far side of central city,so location was inconvenient being further from train station than we needed - this was our own fault though. Hotel ran courtesy coach, but departure times restricted trains you could catch to Cinque Terre, as they didn't always match. Service could be friendlier - varied a bit. Unclear directions to nearest bus. Suggest more details go up on website, e.g. bus number & destination, to and from train station. We only saw one bus at train station, & driver looked blank when we showed him Ghironi address! Obviously not the right bus, so we ended up using taxi. Had superb meal at fish restaurant only 5 minutes' walk away, the Mitili (I think)- recommended by hotel staff.

Hotel was terrific for the purpose of Cinque Terre, the staff were friendly and helpful, the shuttle service was reliable. The instructions on how to find the hotel via driving were a little confusing and could be explained in a little more detail.

Fantastic hotel! The rate we paid was very reasonable for the price we paid. The information given at reception about the surrounding area and the shuttle service were superb.

The hotel is located quite a distance from the train station, but is handy for seeing the Cinque Terre by boat. The hotel shuttle services are also excellent, and the staff were extremely helpful in arranging shuttles, train times, and also making suggestions for restaurants. The room was larger than normal and clean and comfortable, although the double bed was really two singles pushed together.

More a Residence Hotel in an inudstrial area. Very clean and comfortable, friendly and helpful staff. Good breakfast.

The first thing we noticed is that the surrounding neighborhood isn't pretty. This hotel is old with the lobby adorned with leather chairs and old worn out oriental rugs over the matte carpet. It is clean though. The room was dark and lacking of decor. Overall, no frills, just a place to sleep and don't expect much. It is also 1/2 hr ride on bus to the trains for Cinque Terre. Not good if returning after dark.

Rooms are not charming, and the surroundings are not very welcoming, but La Spezia is a well located place for visiting the Cinque Terre area, and the hotel provides shuttle service to the train station if willing to visit the Cinque Terre. The staff is very welcoming indeed, speaking french and english, and provides helpful information.

All of the employees were wonderful ...very helpful and informative. The location was not good ...it seemed perfectly safe, but it is in an industrial part of town and the train station is quite far away. They do offer a free shuttle to the station, but it does not run too frequently. All in all, it was a good base to venture out to the Cinque Terre, Portovenere, and points north. Breakfast was very good, and the free parking was very convenient.

Fabulous hotel with very helpful, multilingual reception staff. It is not near the train up to 5 terre but you can get a bus (although we got a taxi for 10 Euro each way). They have vodafone wifi which i couldn't use (not the hotel's fault) because the credit card page wanted the card name starting with last name first and in Australia card's start with your first name. The hotel tried everything to help but it is privately run through vodafone so we were not successful. Keep that in mind if you will need the internet and don't have a vodafone account.

The hotel was of a good standard and staff efficient and helpful. The only thing I would say, is that had we known the location of the hotel, we would have not chosen it. We had to walk quite a way, in an industrial part of town, to reach the better areas. For people not wanting to leave the location the hotel would be fine.

Consigliato.

As a family of four we stayed in a Quad room in which the hotel staff brought in a folding cot which they were able to easily set up in the area off of the main sleeping area where a dinette table was set up. It nicely provided our teenage son with a bit of privacy. The hotel was easy to find and it was easy to get to the train station with the shuttle service provided. The hotel Ghironi was the perfect base for visiting Cinque Terre. The breakfast was also good. A pizzeria down a short ally way from the hotel provided good service & food.
